Interview: Gordana Brzović

Šime Fantela and Igor Marenić are the new Men's 470 World Champions at the international sailing competition organized in Copenhagen in Denmark. They are both former junior world champions in sailing, members of the Sailing club of St. Krševan from the city of Zadar, Croatia.

In Memoriam: Virgilije Nevjestić 1935 - 2009
Virgilije Nevjestić was a poet and an artist of rich, surreal and poetic expressions.  He was born in the village of Kolo near Tomislavgrad (BiH) in 1935 and moved to Paris in 1968, where he built a respectible artistic career. He died on August 24th 2009, after a long and difficult illness at La Tourelle hospital in the Parisian suburb of L'Hay-les-Roses, where he had been since September of last year.

Ana Vidovic distinguished Croatian guitarist
Ana Vidović was born in Croatia in the town of Karlovac. At the age of 13 she became the youngest student to attend the National Musical Academy in Zagreb.  Her international performance career includes recitals in London, Paris, Vienna, Salzburg, Rome, Budapest, Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Oslo, Copenhagen, Toronto, Baltimore, San Francisco, Houston, Austin, Dallas and St. Louis. She has a recital in Cavtat Croatia within Epiduarus Festival September 2, 2009 - 8:00 PM.

Blanka Vlasic defends her world title in Berlin 2009
High-jump queen Blanka Vlasic, one of the best athlete in the world,  retained her world crown on Thursday when she saw off arch-rival and local favourite Ariane Friedrich to win gold at the World Athletics Championships. Vlasic was the only athlete to clear 2.04m in the electric atmosphere of Berlin's Olympic stadium.

Villa Ružić, situated in the city of Rijeka, is a top monument of Croatian culture. Among other things it comprises numerous editions of the famous Croatian Tales of Long Ago published by Ivana Brlić Mažuranić in 1916. The book intended for children was translated into some fourty languages, including Chinese. The Villa Ružić is superbly directed by Mr. Theodor de Canziani Jakšić on the left.

Vladimir Beck survives in a post-catastrophic world

The Colony is a controlled experiment to see exactly what it would take to survive and rebuild under these circumstances. Vladimir Beck (left) is one of 10 volunteers that are isolated in an urban environment outside Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society.

The Conservatory students and alumni will perform with guest artist Nenad Bach. Nenad Bach is a recording artist, composer, performer, and peace activist.  He is originally from Croatia, but now lives in New York.

U2 conquered Zagreb Croatia
Unprecedented and original spectacle in Maksimir stadium was thrown by Bono Vox and his good Irish lads of U2. Over 60,000 people sang along with the band for over two hours. Oh beautiful, oh precious, oh sweet  liberty - Bono Vox quoted 17th century Croatian author Ivan Gundulić  as per Nenad Bach's suggestion, to the delight of the sold-out stadium.

An important exhibition dedicated to Ivan Juan Vučetić, founder of scientific dactiloscopy - identification by fingerprints, has been organized in Milan from July 8-20 2009, in the representative building of Palazzo Triennale  It was conceived by Ljerka Galic from the Croatian Hertage Foundation in Zagreb, who opened the exhibition in the presence of Consul General of Argentina, Consul General of Croatia, representatives of Italian State Police and other guests.

Croatia is the new Men's Youth Handball World Champion
 After an one-sided final and a rather charming closing ceremony, the III Men's Youth World Championship in Tunisia came to an end on Friday. Croatia now is the 2009 Men's Youth World Champion, after beating Iceland in the final with 40:35.

Feri Sucic 91 years old Croatian musician and writer from Gradisce, Austria
Feri Sučić was born in 1918 within a Croatian branch in Austria, in the region of Gradišće - Burgenland. He composed or arranged 300 songs, and many of them are circulating as traditional songs. He is also known as prolific writer. An extensive monograph dedicated to his life and work has been issued last year on the occasion of 90th birthday.

Collegium pro musica sacra earned silver medal in Rome 2009
The 3rd International Choir Competition was organized by sacred music association Musica Mundi in the basilica of San Crisogono in Rome from June 30 to July 5 2009. Twenty choirs participated from all over the world. Croatian choir Collegium pro musica sacra, conducted by Iva Juras on the left, earned silver diploma. This excellent Croatian choir exists for 37 years.

Igor Stagljar distinguished Croatian molecular biologist in Toronto
Professor Igor Štagljar and his team of scientists in Toronto began developing an original biological method for the identification of new proteins involved in the development of cancer. This method paved the way for the research of grave genetic diseases, particularly cystic fibrosis.

Zvonimir Atletic is professional Croatian photographer. His unique photos include such persons like Mother Teresa and Father Ante Gabrić, well known worldwide for their humanitarian work, especially in India. Bozidar Finka 1925-1999 distinguished Croatian linguist
Božidar Finka 1925-1999 was distignuished Croatian linguist, a member of Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. This article has been published on the occasion of 10th year anniversary of his death. He is one of the authors of the Croatian orthography prepared in  1971.

CROATIAN art&craft EXPO New York City @ Gallery MC July 23 - July 31 2009

James B. Foley is new U.S. Ambassador to Croatia
US President Barack Obama will nominate James B. Foley (left) as new US ambassador to Croatia. Foley's nomination must be approved by the US Senate. Foley, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, will succeed Robert Bradtke, who is leaving in July. Bradtke has been ambassador since 2006.

What recession? Business is booming for a Croatian sawmill

Today, when everybody talks about recession in business, Mirko doesn't feel the crisis, because all of his production is guaranteed, and 90% of it goes to foreign markets.

Klapa Cambi singers from the town of Kaštel Kambelovac in Croatia won the prestigeous competition Grand Prix of Peter the Great in St. Petersburg in Russia with the maximal 100 points from the jury. According to Ljubo Stipišić, one of the principal proponents of klapa singing, there are about 400 klapa's in Croatia.

X Sports is coming to Croatia this summer

Children Festival of Klapa Singing in Zadar May 2009
Klapa singing in Croatia is a unique phenomenon of European culture. The phenomenon has been enriched in the past few years by  existence of children's klapas. The City Library in Zadar, Croatia, organizes the annual Children Festival of Klapa Singing since 2006. Each year it is becoming more and more popular and widespread. One of the principal proponents of klapa singing in Croatia is Ljubo Stipišić Delmata.

49th International Children's Festival in Sibenik Croatia June 20 - July 4 2009
49th International Children's Festival in the city of Šibenik, Croatia, will take place in the period of June 20 - July 4 2009. It will host as many as 1100 participants from twenty countries which will offer a rich cultural program. The theatre tradition in Šibenik started 140 years ago, in 1870, when the theatre building was inaugurated. The city is famous for its Renaissance Cathedral of Sv. Jakov from 15-16th centuries, proteced by UNESCO.

Andrea Kulier 17-years-old Croatian in the USA to study cosmology at Princeton
Andrea Kulier who is only 17-years-old will graduate from California State Los Angeles University and attend Princeton in the fall to study cosmology. Kulier and her family immigrated to the U.S. from Croatia. While most in her age group are graduating high school, Andrea Kulier received dual bachelor's degrees and is on course for a PhD.

The delegates came to Washington to discuss and formalize the NFCA's new agenda in this promising era of full NATO membership for the Republic of Croatia and a new political environment for Croatia and the Croatian American community.

Four Croatian female alpinists conquered Mt Everest in May 2009
Four Croatian female alpinists climbed on Mt Everest, among them two sisters Darija and Iris Bostjančić on the photo. It was for the first time that two sisters climbed on the top of Himalayas. This success was a result of team work in which 11 Croatian female alpinists participated. The expedition was organized by Croatian Mountaineering Association on the occasion of 135 years of its existence, founded in 1874, one of the oldest such organizations in the world.

Drazen Domjanic and his wonderful musical family in Liechtenstein
Dražen Domjanić is Croatian pianist born in the town of Čakovec, living with his family in Liechtenstein. He is artistic director of Musik & Jugend (Music and Youth Foundation) which organized many master classes and concerts aiming to help young musicians from Central Europe, with emphasis on Croatia. His children Sara and Andreas are also musicians, playing violin and piano.

Lauded by Rodin as 'the greatest phenomenon amongst the sculptors', Ivan Meštrović began his career exhibiting with the Vienna Secession at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. His fame led to important exhibitions across Europe, and in 1915 he made history as the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Igor Kovacevich (left) graduated in 1992 from the University of Sarajevo with a B.F.A. - Diploma in Film, Theatre and Comparative Literature. He also worked as an intern on "Time of the Gypsies" by Emir Kusturica (a two-time winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival). In December 2007, Kovacevich completed production of the psychological thriller "Downloading Nancy".

Branko Lustig receives 2009 IFF Lifetime Achievement Award
Born in 1932 to a Croatian-Jewish family, Branko Lustig (left) began his film career in 1955 working on films like Fiddler on the Roof and The Tin Drum before landing a job on Meryl Streep's unforgettable "Sophie's Choice." He is the recipient of two Oscars, having won one for "Schindler's List" in 1993 and another for "Gladiator" in 2001.

Eat that Croatian food man, and you just feel the power in your veins
"30 Rock" actor, stand up comedian, and World Champion, Judah Friedlander (left) is an outspoken fan of Croatian food. To which he was undoubtedly exposed to, by his Croatian mother. Describing the power of Croatian cuisine, he says: "I like pretty much all food, but eat that Croatian food, man, and you just feel the power in your veins."
