Frano Maroevic 1908-1939 expert in maritime law and publicist from the island of Hvar in Croatia

 | Frano V. Maroević (1908-1939), died very young at the age of 31 in the native city of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar near the city of Split. Born in a family of mariners and shipbuilders, he was an established expert in maritime law, which he had studied at the University of Zagreb, where he also earned his PhD. He was also very interested in literature, mountaineering, sea travelling, about which he published numerous articles. In 2020, Hrvojka Mihanović-Salopek and Jeniđe Maroević-Kulaga published a luxorous, richly illustrated monograph entitled Maritimne sfere Frane V. Maroevića (Maritime Spheres of Frano V. Maroević). |

Ante Glibota 1945-2020 distinguished Croatian patriot and historian of art and architecture

 | Mr. Ante Glibota, born in the town of Slivno in 1945, distinguished Croatian patriot and intellectual, passed away in Paris in 2020. According to the data provided by Mr. Glibota himself in 2017, during his appearance at the Croatian TV, his opus consists among others of about 220 books and catalogues published in some 15 languages (more than hundred of them in China only) and of about 550 large exhibitions organized throughout the world. His achievements are all the more impressive in the light of the fact that as a young person he spent two years in ex-Yugoslav communist prison (1972-1974). |

 | The exhibition of beautiful Japanese Ningyo dolls has been opened on August 27th, 2020 in the city of Vukovar in the presence of Her Excellency Misako Kaji (on the photo), ambassador of Japan to Croatia. The exhbition will be opened until Septemeber 27th. Japan has a long and rich tradition of the art of dolls. It is not widely known that one of the most interesting collections of dolls representing national costumes of various countries throughout the world is kept in Croatia's capital Zagreb, in Ethnographic Museum, collected by Ljeposlav Perinić - The King of Dolls. |

It is an Official Selection of 2020 Mountainfilm Festival, and was chosen Daily Short Pick on FilmShortage.com, May 27th, 2020. The film is touring and was screened last week in Sao Paulo, Brazil and will be touring August 24-26 in Southampton, New York, US. You can get more information here. We are now fortunate to have the film subtitled in 15 languages. My songs "Vukovar" "Everything is Forever" and "I Will Follow" were recently played by musical genius Pete Jones on his radio program in London.

Jelko Yuresha, born in Croatia's capital Zagreb, studied ballet under Ana Roje, Nadine Nicolaeva Legat, Kathleen Crofton, Tamara Karsavina and worked with choreograhphers Leonid Massine, Vladimir Bourmeister, Frederick Ashton, Serge Lifar, Bronislava Nijinska. He appeared with Margot Fonteyn in the BBC-TV production of "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), was The Principal Dancer of The English National Ballet (previously London Festival Ballet) and danced Principal roles with British Royal Ballet. |

St. Jerome and his importance for Croatians

 | St. Jerome, one of the most important spiritual writers of the Western Civilization, who translated the Bible into the Latin language, died in 420 AD. His importance for Croatia is analogous to that of St. Martin for France (who died in 397 AD). St. Jerome entered into the history of Croatian literature already in the Middle Ages. In Croatian lands there are as many as 63 sacral objects bearing the name of this saint. The present Papal Croatian Department of St. Jerome in Rome has its roots from the time of Pope Sixto V (end of 16th ct.), who was of Croatian origin. Protector of theologians, librarians, teachers and students, St. Jerome is celebrated on 30th of September. |

Operation "Storm" 1995 is the first ever military action that prevented genocide

 | Distinguished Croatian scholar and humanitarian activist Slobodan Lang (on the photo) defined the 1995 Operation Storm as the first ever military action that prevented genocide. This military operation liberated much territory from Serbian occupation, saved the Bihać enclave in Bosnia-Hercegovina and defeated Milošević and his allies, finally bringing peace. Documentary maker Nikola Knez, has put online his English language documentary entitled "Operation Storm" (available at YouTube). Congratulations on the occasion of Victory Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders on 5th August to citizens of Croatia and all Croatians in the world. |

TESLA (T) unit for magnetic flux density introduced in 1960 in Paris

 | TESLA is a unit for magnetic induction, that is, of the magnetic flux density, introduced in 1960 (October 18th) in Paris by the General Conference on Weights and Measures. It is a part of basic SI derived units. With this article, we mark 60 years since introducing this important unit. In his autobiography published in 1919, Tesla wrote: "I had become intensely interested in electricity under the stimulating influence of my Professor of Physics, who was an ingenious man and often demonstrated the principles by apparatus of his own invention." The name of Tesla's professor, when he was at the age of 14-17, was Martin Sekulić. |

Mia Slavenska 1916-2002 Croatian ballet prodigy

 | Mia Slavenska, the greatest Croatian female classical dancer in history, was born in Brod na Savi, Croatia, on February 20, 1916, the daughter of Milan and Heddwiga (Palme) Čorak. Her early teachers include Josephina Weiss, former Ballerina of the Vienna State Opera, Margarita Froman, ballerina of the Bolshoi and Maximilian Froman, soloist of the Bolshoi. Mia Slavenska was a student at the Royal Academy of Music, Zagreb, Croatia for five years, where she majored in piano. She studied ballet in both Vienna and Paris. She came to the United States in 1939 and was naturalized in 1947. She married Kurt Neumann and had one daughter, Maria.  | With this article we mark 60th anniversary of Studia Croatica, founded in 1960 in Buenos Aires. The journal has been founded by Croataian emmigrants. Its editors in chief were Ivo Bogdan (1960-1971), Franjo Nevistić (1971-1984), Radovan Latković (1984-1994), Joza Vrljičak (1995 till today, 2020, on the photo). Among numerous collaborators we mention Ernest Bauer, Rafo Bogišić, Gojko Borić, Christophe Dolbeau, Jozo Kljaković, Kristian Kreković, Mateo Martinic, Ivan Meštrović, C. Michael McAdams, Vinko Nikolić, Bogdan Radica, Zdravko Sančević, Carl Gustav Stroehm, Franjo Tuđman, Carmen Verlichak, Viktor Vida.  | Nenad Bach, naš poznati glazbenik i mirovni aktivist, idejni začetnik programa PingPongParkinson, na svom se osobnom primjeru uvjerio u dobrobit igranja stolnoga tenisa. PingPongParkinson prepoznala je i Svjetska stolnoteniska federacija ITTF. Marijana Grisnik Croatian painter from Strawberry Hill in Kansas City USA

 | Marijana Grišnik (b. Pintar) is a woman with strong ties both to Strawberry Hill and the ethnic heritage of its people. All four of her grandparents immigrated to Kansas City from Croatia. According to Marijana, "I was very fortunate in that my mother shared me with the people on the Hill. They all seemed to have a hand in raising me." As a child Marijana loved to sketch the sights of Strawberry Hill. It was, however, after the birth of her third child that she began painting her memories of growing up on Strawberry Hill. Through her canvases this self-taught artist has become the storyteller of this ethnic community. |

| The Croatian-born photographer relocated to Chicago at an early age and began photographing bands in college. As a young musician might, he took his mantra seriously: practice, practice, practice. It wasn't until he chanced upon the work of one of the greatest rock photographers of all time that lightning struck, and he realized what he wanted to do with his life. "I shot Jeff," Orlic says of his first photo shoot with Wilco's founder, Jeff Tweedy. "They liked it, and the rest is history. I just kind of never left." From the perspective of the bands and record labels for whom he works, Orlic's easygoing manner and ability to produce images efficiently and without getting in the way are equally as important as his artistic prowess. |

 | Tino Pattiera was born in 1890 and died 1966 in his beloved town of Cavtat. He was a world-renown opera singer. His voice was a heroic, dramatic and delightful tenor, with perfect diction and pronunciation for both the German and Italian opera opus. He was an irresistibly attractive figure on the stage and is remembered by his attractive voice and appearance. Among other accomplishments, he was a lead in The Saxony Kingdom Opera House in Dresden and guest soloist at The New York Metropolitan Opera. He was among the greatest Croatian singers in history. With this article we mark 130 years since the birth of Tino Pattiera in the town of Cavtat, near the city of Dubrovnik. |

 | Krasić's contribution to the formative period of Croatian language instruction abroad was massive and aimed at promoting our language and culture in North America. He left his homeland with a broad educational background and worked in the frame of Catholic missions in the Croatian communities on the dissemination of our language and culture in the anglophone world, all whilst discharging his complex parish duties while resident in the USA and in Canada. Zeljko Zuanovic Croatian priest and his wonderful world of sea shells

| Željko Zuanović is a Croatian catholic priest, with an interesting hobby: he collects see shells throughout the world. His collection of about 2500 shells is since 2020 exhibited in the village of Marijanci, a few kilometers of Valpovo the NE of Croatia. We recommend you to pay a visit to his collection of shells. Surprisingly, rev. Zuanović was born in continental part of Croatia, and his other hobbies include diving, singing, cooking and writing poetry. He has published a wonderful book entitled The World of Shells.

1141 years since the first international recognition of Croatia: 879 - 2020

 | The Croatian Prince Branimir, 9th century, made important steps in strengthening the relations with Rome. During the solemn divine service in St. Peter's church in Rome in 879, Pope John VIII gave his blessing to the prince and the whole Croatian people, about which he informed Branimir in his letters, the first one dated on May 21, 879. This was the first time that the Croatian state was officially recognized (at that time the international legitimacy was given by the Pope), which, as we see, happened more than eleven centuries ago! In his letter dated from 881 the Pope addressed Branimir as the "glorious prince". |

Ragusa (Dubrovnik) in Croatia and Ragusa on the island of Sicily in Italy

 | The article deals with erroneous interpretation of the Ragusa veduta dating from 1695, kept at the National and University Library in Zagreb, Croatia (and there are numerous copies kept in other European libraries, the first edition originating from 1638). It was published Matthaeus Merian Sr., but it does not represent the city of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) in Croatia, but Ragusa on the island of Sicily in Italy. Most of the authors do not distinguish between Matthaeus Merian Sr. and his son Matthaeus Merian Jr., which has caused numerous mistakes and contradictions. It is interesting that Matthaeus Merian Jr. (on the photo) prepared a well known veduta of the city of Dubrovnik (Ragusa in Croatia) in flames, after the 1667 earthquake, and not his father (who has died 17 years earlier, in 1650). |

 | Franka Miriam Brueckler, employed at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Zagreb, has published already three mathematical books with Springer Verlag, all of them in German langague. The first two deal with the History of Mathematics, while the third one, which appeared in 2019, is dedicated to mathematical foundations of chrystallography (for both mathematicians and natural scientists): Mathematische Grundlagen der Kristallographie fuer Matthematiker und Naturwissenschaftler. The last book has 207 pp, accompanied with more than 100 drawings and several tables. Congratulations to the author for her fine work!

 | Radojka Šverko, Croatian diva, was singing Croatian National Anthem during the celebration of the Statehood Day on May 30th, 2020. On 30 May 1990, the first modern multi-party Croatian Parliament convened, following the 1990 Croatian parliamentary election. Croatian Deit (Sabor) is one of the oldest in Europe. During many centuries the Croats had their bans (viceroys) and their assembly called Sabor (Deit). The oldest known Sabor was held in Split in 925 and in 928 (devoted more to religious than to secular questions), and in 1076 when Dmitar Zvonimir was elected the Croatian King by the "unanimous choice of the clergy and the people". |

 | Branka Beretovac, soprano, was primadona of Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb for 35 years. She graduated from the Academy of Music of the University of Zagreb. In 1967, she became a permanent soloist at the Opera Stadt Theater in German capital Bonn. Upon returning back to Croatia in 1969, she had successful opera appearances in Croatia and throughout Europe: Bonn, Geneve, Monte Carlo, Paris, Madrid, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Berlin, Salzburg, Brno, Vienna, Luxembourg, Frankfurt am Main, Solingen, Ulm, Budapest, Frieburg and elsewhere. She had a fruitful collaboration with distinguished Croatian conductor Lovro von Matačić. |

| Tomislav Gabric was born in the town of Metković in Croatia in 1933. He moved to the United States in 1962 to start his career in Los Angeles, California. Tomislav Gabric and his wife Lea married in 1964. They have one daughter Carole (Gabrić-Lewis). Mr. Gabric moved his architectural firm, Gabric & Associates to Corona around 1997. The firm is located at 903 South Ramona Ave in Corona. He completed as many as 1600 professional projects of various buildings throughout California. He was also a talented painter. On the left is his autoportrait from 1989.

 | Former Houston Rockets player and head coach Rudy Tomjanovich was inducted in 2020 into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Now 71 years old, Tomjanovich played for the Rockets from 1970 through 1981, and was head coach from 1992 through 2003. That run included Houston's only two NBA titles in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. Rudy Tomjanovich is of Croatian descent. |

 | Here is yet another noted book by Nasja Meyer, member of Lodge 50 from St. Louis, MO, instructor of the Croatian language, and co-author of the well-known Croatian textbook "Croatia - The Country and Language" that she wrote with her daughter, Dr. Jasna Meyer. The new book is a collection of poetry titled "Five Red Rubies" ("Pet rubina crvenih") published this summer in Croatia. The book is hard cover, printed on high quality paper and illustrated by a well known water color artist, Lenka Zavirsek, from Split. It contains over 200 poems, all but one in Croatian. |

The city of Zagreb struck in 2020 with the earthquake of 5.5 degrees on the Richter scale

 | As if the vicious corona pandemic was not enough! In March 22nd 2020, at 6:24 AM, the city of Zagreb was suddenly struck with the earthquake of 5.5 degrees on the Richter scale. This was the strongest earthquake in Croatia's capital since 1880. We mention in passing another earthquake in Zagreb 1909, which was quite important, since it led Croatian scientist Andrija Mohorovičić to the discovery of the MOHO layer, conisdered as the most important discovery in the history of seismology (the science about earthquakes). The 2020 earthquake brought a lots of damage to the city, easpecially to its central part. During the period of one month only, Zagreb has experienced as many as eight hundred additonal smaller earthquakes and tremors. The earthquake damage is estimated at 5.52 billion Euros.

Her project Bimanual Manipulation of Rigid and Deformable Objects has been selected as one of 82 projects in the field of physical sciences and engineering to be funded by the European Research Council (ERC). |

Branko Cikatic 1954-2020 the first K1 Grand Prix champion in Tokyo 1993

| Branko Cikatić (1954-2020) was distinguished Croatian fighter, who was the winner of the first K1 Grand Prix Tournament in Tokyo in 1993 (in the finals against Ernest Hoost). At that time, he was at the age of 38, and is till these days the oldest winner of the K1 tournament. He was the winner of in various combat sports for thirteen times. In kick-boxing, he was the World Champion in 1981. He started his career in Solin, and then continued in his native city of Split. In 1989, the German journal Karate Budo Magazine decorated him with the Golden Glove, and proclaimed him to be the most popular combat sportsman in the world, in front of Chuck Norris i Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Croatian folk saga "Following the Sun" discovered on the island of Krk beginning before the Christian era

 | Rado Žic Mikulin and Leonard Eleršek are the authors of a monumental book Putom sunca (Following the Sun), dealing with the till now unknown saga from the island of Krk (the town of Punat) about the earliest Croatian history. It was registered by Rado Žic Mikulin from one of his grandfathers, and the saga has been passed to the present day from time immemorial. The saga starts before the Christian era, on the Tigris river. The authors provide a wealth of traditional verses from the island of Krk, as well as a number of very interesting old maps, describing the movement of Croatians to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. |

Ta nakladnička kuća smatrala je kako je potrebno da ne samo Hrvati izvan Republike Hrvatske, nego i općenito hispanofona publika sazna što se dogodilo Hrvatima krajem Drugoga svjetskog rata.  | Starling, or čvorak in Croatian, provides us with surprising lessons of social tolerance and help. See a short video from Bosnia and Herzegovina, shot in the city of Široki Brig (or Široki Brijeg, i.e., Wide Hill), which is not far from Međugorje. The duration of this very educative video is 1 minute and 19 seconds. Incredible starlings show on large transmission line was captured in the village Dobrkovići. Miro Gavran in Vienna Austria and in Vilnius Lithuania 2020

 | In March 2020, Croatian author Miro Gavran will present his drama and prosaic work in Vienna and Vilnius. His comedy The Doll will premiere at the Theatre Centre Forum in Vienna on 5th March 2020. Tihomir Glowatzky translated the work into German and the play is directed by the renowned Austrian actor Hubsi Kramar. In the main roles are: Adriana Zartl and Christian Strasser; The Doll is produced by Carmen Wenger. It's a jubilee, the 20th premiere of this play, which has had its world premiere in New York 2012 and since then it's been produced in both Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. It was recently published in China in the Anthology of East-European drama. A week later, on 13th March 2020, in the cultural Centre in Vilnius, Miro Gavran will promote his novel Kafka's Friend in Laima Masyte's translation, published by Ledikla Gelmes. |

Celebrating 22nd February the Day of Croatian Glagolitic Script and Glagolitism

 | On 22nd Febrary, 1483, the first Croatian printed book has appeared in the Glagolitic Script. It shows that Croatian glagolitic priests were able to adopt very early Gutenberg's technology of movable type. Only 12 copies of the books have been preserved, 5 of them kept in Croatia, and 7 scattered throughout the world: in the Russian National Library (former Russian Imperial Library) in St Petersburg, in the Austrian National Library in Vienna (former Austrian Royal Library), in the Vatican Apostolic Library (two copies), and in the Library of Congress in Washington. On the photo a monument to Gutenberg in Zagreb from cc. 1890, the first one in Europe appearing outside of German speaking area.

Croatian Post successfully made its first drone delivery in Feb 2020

 | The drone flew autonomously, from the Zadar port of Gaženica to Preko on the island of Ugljan at a speed of 35 km/h, for about 12 minutes. This flight is a part of a pilot project with the Croatian company AIR-RMLD which develops commercial and industrial services using drones. Drones have already proved their usefulness in crisis situations, for example, when medicine or antidotes needed to be delivered in hard to reach areas. Today, Croatian Post is testing smart solutions faster and more often than ever before - from augmented reality goggles, pallet-carrier robots to electric vehicles and drones. | Akiane Kramarik: "...Realizing that nobody, except for my mother, cherished my work, I became more and more disillusioned. One time I threw my painting in the rain outside. And as it was landing into the puddle someone caught it. Just in time. It was my mother. Out of breath she shared something, 'Last night I had a strange dream. I saw thousands of people waiting for your art. The line stretched all the way to the horizon.' " At the age of 4 she started dreaming about God, indicating that God inspired her to start painting and writing poetry about Him. She has dedicated her life to God and is focused on making the world a better place.

Bobby Fischer 0 - 1 Vladimir Kovacevic the only major defeat of Bobby Fischer in his chess career

| In 1970, a chess tournament (Tournament of Peace) was organized in Croatia which took place in the town of Rovinj on the Adriatic Sea (Istrian peninsula). Fischer was undefeated in the previous four years. His defeat against Vladimir Kovačević, then a little known Croatian player, was a world wide sensation. Of course, despite this defeat, Fischer won the convincingly this trounament, which included 10 other grand-masters (including some of the best Soviet players). Vladimir Kovačević became international grand-master six years later, in 1976.

 | AMCA-Paris (association of former students of Croatian universities, living in Paris), organized a lecture delivered at the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Paris, dealing with the schooling of Nikola Tesla in Croatia during his formative years (from his 14th to 17 year). His most important professor from that period is Martin Sekulić, for who Tesla writes to be an ingenious man who enthused him for electricity. On the amusing photo from 1941 we can see Nikola Tesla (on the right, two years before his death) with Croatian-American boxer Fritzie Zivic, then the welter weight champion of the world. This is the only known photo on which Nikola Tesla smiles. |

 | Croatian handball team has an amazing continuity of top results at European and World championships in the past decades. Congratulations to our team: Domagoj Duvnjak (on the photo, one of the best players today), Zlatko Horvat, Igor Karačić, Luka Cindrić, Željko Musa, Luka Stepanović, etc., under the baton of Lino Červar. Mr. Červar is the most successful coach in the history of Croatian handball. He guided our team to World Championship gold in 2003 and the Olympic title in 2005. |
