| Hrvatski centar gradišćanskih Hrvata u Beču poslao je tužnu obavijest o smrti dr. Josipa Seršića u kojoj stoji: âNa Štefanje, 26. prosinca 2020. g. je preminuo dr. Josip Seršić (71), rodom s otoka Krka, a u Beču posebno poznat i cijenjen kao polihistor, jezikoslovac i prije svega stručnjak za noviju povijest gradišćanskih Hrvata. Izuzetno je aktivno i uvijek mjerodavno sudjelovao u društvenom životu hrvatskih zajednica i udruga u Beču. Posebno je bio vezan uz Hrvatski centar, gdje je bio i sudionik znanstvenog simpozija '400 godina Hrvata u Beču' 2009. godine. Petrinja and Sisak between the sounds of the earthquake and of classical music

 | In this article we provide photos and sounds commemorating the earthquake (6.2 degrees on the Richter scale) that by the end of 2020 struck the areas of the towns of Sisak and Petrinja south of Zagreb. The earthquake was felt as far as Italy and Austria. Both towns have already undergone a very slow and complex process of renovation in the period of two and a half decades after the Serbian agression on Croatia. Elizabeth Peratrovich a native woman in Alaska and civil rights pioneer bearing Croatian second name

 | Elizabeth Peratrovich (1911-1958) was a native Tlingit woman and civil rights pioneer who, in 1945, was instrumental in getting the Alaska legislature to pass what historians cite as the first anti-discrimination law in America (pre-dating the Civil Rights Act by 19 years). In 1988, the state of Alaska designated Feb. 16 -- the anniversary of the signing of the act -- as a holiday honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich. Her second name of Peratrovich comes from her husband Roy Peratrovich. His father Ivan was born in Croatia on the island of Hvar, and arrived to California in 1860.

Branka Musulin 1917-1975 distinguished Croatian pianist

| Branka Musulin, fantastic Croatian pianist, completed the Academy of Music of the University of Zagreb at the age of 19. She spent most of her pianistic life in Germany, and played under the baton of Hans Mueller-Kray, Willem Mengelberg, Hermann Abendroth, Franz Konwitschny, Karl Boehm, Georg Solti and Sergiu Celibidache. She had numerous pianist concerts throughout Europe, especially in her native Croatia and in Germany, as well as in Japan. Since 1958, she lectured at the Hochschule fuer Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, first as Dozent and then as Professor. She should not be forgotten! |

 | Marina Jurica graduated from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) with two degrees: one in Meteorology and the other in Opera Performance. She is persuing both of her passions. She worked in Orlando, Florida, before becoming chief meteorologist at CBS47 in 2016. She was the first female chief meteorologist in the USA, and is still one of the few female chiefs. She appeared as professional opera singer in the Canadian tour of "Les Miserables" and debuted her own show "Seasons of Love" on Broadway in 2018. Her father is from the island of Lastovo, and mother from the city of Opatija, both in Croatia: "I am a first generation American, my ENTIRE family is Croatian. Yoko Nishii, living in the city of Ise close to Toba, has delivered a lecture about Croatia, its history and culture, repeated for all six classes of the school (on 25th and 26th October, 2020). Yoko Nishii has prepared 150 beautiful slides dealing with Croatia. She is not only fluent in Croatian language, but as a pianist she visited almost every corner of Croatia: she had as many as 49 soloist concerts in 24 cities throughout the country. |

 | Paul "Buddy" Bucha was born on August 1, 1943, in Washington, D.C. He is of Croatian descent; his paternal grandfather immigrated to the United States from the Croatian town of Našice. He graduated from Ladue Horton Watkins High School in 1961. An all-American swimmer in high school, Bucha was offered athletic scholarships to several universities but turned them down and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduation he earned a Master of Business Administration at Stanford University before beginning his military career at Fort Campbell. Bucha was sent to Vietnam in 1967 as a captain and commander of Company D, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment. |

 | Damjan Rodin was one of the first Croatian priests to move to Brazil after the Second World War, where he organised the religious and community life of the ethnic Croatian community in Sao Paulo. In Rio de Janeiro he continued his important work for Croatians and Brazilians. He was born in the Šibenik hinterland (in the town of Prvić Luka on the island of Prvić) and moved to Brazil in 1947, working as parish priest in Sao Paulo. He raised a favela in Rio de Janeiro now known as Vila Croacia, part of the Senador Camara district. |

 | Christophe Dolbea published his new monograph entitled Aux cotes des patriotes croates (By the Croatian Patriots), as a private edition, in 2019. The book commprises 11 chapters, and ends with a complete bibliography of the author. In the middle of the book, twelve pages containing the photos of the main persons described in the book are exhibited. The book deals with Croatian emmigration in France, with parts of which the author was very close. We also learn of Dominque Gay, a young Frenchman who fought during Homland Defensive War and tragically died in Croatia in 1992 near te town Drniš. The book represent an important contribution to the study of the history of Croatian emmigration in France. |

 | In this article we present a nice video prepared by Yoko Nishii (Ise, Japan), dedicated to the 135th anniversary of the birth of Dora Pejačević (on the photo), the first Croatian woman composer of international reputation. In this video, Yoko plays Pejačević's "Chanson sans paroles" in C Major Op. 5 (Song without words), accompanied with lovely sceneries from the town of Našice, where Dora was living, and where Yoko already had several pianist concerts. Yoko Nishii had nearly fifty soloist concerts in as many as 24 Croatian cities and towns. We should also stress that she speaks Croatian. |

Japan remembering Vladimir Devide 1925-2010 Croatian haiku poet and mathematician

| Mihovil Rismondo, Croatian painter from the city of Split (age 71), painted twelve canvases inspired by haiku poetry, under the auspices of Japanese Embassy in Croatia and the Tourist Association of the city of Zagreb. In this way, ten years since the death of Vladimir Devide have been marked, a well known Croatian haiku and mathematician. He was the greatest promoter of Japanese culture in Croatia. For his contributions in popularization of Japanese culture he was awarded the prestigious Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure - Konsanto Zuihosho.

 | Miro Vidović, born in the city of Vukovar, was one of the best Croatian music producers. Numerous distinuished musicians attended his "Morris Studio", founded in 1997 in the city of Zagreb: 2CELLOS (Stjepan Hauser and Luka Šulić), Oliver Dragojević, Maksim Mrvica, Gibonni, Arsen Dedić, Nenad Bach, etc. He was a manager of 2CELLOS, that he directed since the very beginning. 2CELLOS said that Miro discovered them, but Miro modestly said that in fact 2CELLOS discovered him. Miro was always simple, modest, and down to the earth.

Frano Maroevic 1908-1939 expert in maritime law and publicist from the island of Hvar in Croatia

 | Frano V. Maroević (1908-1939), died very young at the age of 31 in the native city of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar near the city of Split. Born in a family of mariners and shipbuilders, he was an established expert in maritime law, which he had studied at the University of Zagreb, where he also earned his PhD. He was also very interested in literature, mountaineering, sea travelling, about which he published numerous articles. In 2020, Hrvojka Mihanović-Salopek and Jeniđe Maroević-Kulaga published a luxorous, richly illustrated monograph entitled Maritimne sfere Frane V. Maroevića (Maritime Spheres of Frano V. Maroević). |

Ante Glibota 1945-2020 distinguished Croatian patriot and historian of art and architecture

 | Mr. Ante Glibota, born in the town of Slivno in 1945, distinguished Croatian patriot and intellectual, passed away in Paris in 2020. According to the data provided by Mr. Glibota himself in 2017, during his appearance at the Croatian TV, his opus consists among others of about 220 books and catalogues published in some 15 languages (more than hundred of them in China only) and of about 550 large exhibitions organized throughout the world. His achievements are all the more impressive in the light of the fact that as a young person he spent two years in ex-Yugoslav communist prison (1972-1974). |

 | The exhibition of beautiful Japanese Ningyo dolls has been opened on August 27th, 2020 in the city of Vukovar in the presence of Her Excellency Misako Kaji (on the photo), ambassador of Japan to Croatia. The exhbition will be opened until Septemeber 27th. Japan has a long and rich tradition of the art of dolls. It is not widely known that one of the most interesting collections of dolls representing national costumes of various countries throughout the world is kept in Croatia's capital Zagreb, in Ethnographic Museum, collected by Ljeposlav Perinić - The King of Dolls. |

The film is touring and was screened last week in Sao Paulo, Brazil and will be touring August 24-26 in Southampton, New York, US. You can get more information here. Jelko Yuresha, born in Croatia's capital Zagreb, studied ballet under Ana Roje, Nadine Nicolaeva Legat, Kathleen Crofton, Tamara Karsavina and worked with choreograhphers Leonid Massine, Vladimir Bourmeister, Frederick Ashton, Serge Lifar, Bronislava Nijinska. He appeared with Margot Fonteyn in the BBC-TV production of "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), was The Principal Dancer of The English National Ballet (previously London Festival Ballet) and danced Principal roles with British Royal Ballet. |

St. Jerome and his importance for Croatians

 | St. Jerome, one of the most important spiritual writers of the Western Civilization, who translated the Bible into the Latin language, died in 420 AD. His importance for Croatia is analogous to that of St. Martin for France (who died in 397 AD). St. Jerome entered into the history of Croatian literature already in the Middle Ages. In Croatian lands there are as many as 63 sacral objects bearing the name of this saint. The present Papal Croatian Department of St. Jerome in Rome has its roots from the time of Pope Sixto V (end of 16th ct.), who was of Croatian origin. Protector of theologians, librarians, teachers and students, St. Jerome is celebrated on 30th of September. |

Operation "Storm" 1995 is the first ever military action that prevented genocide

 | Distinguished Croatian scholar and humanitarian activist Slobodan Lang (on the photo) defined the 1995 Operation Storm as the first ever military action that prevented genocide. This military operation liberated much territory from Serbian occupation, saved the Bihać enclave in Bosnia-Hercegovina and defeated Milošević and his allies, finally bringing peace. Documentary maker Nikola Knez, has put online his English language documentary entitled "Operation Storm" (available at YouTube). Congratulations on the occasion of Victory Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders on 5th August to citizens of Croatia and all Croatians in the world. |

 | TESLA is a unit for magnetic induction, that is, of the magnetic flux density, introduced in 1960 (October 18th) in Paris by the General Conference on Weights and Measures. It is a part of basic SI derived units. With this article, we mark 60 years since introducing this important unit. In his autobiography published in 1919, Tesla wrote: "I had become intensely interested in electricity under the stimulating influence of my Professor of Physics, who was an ingenious man and often demonstrated the principles by apparatus of his own invention." The name of Tesla's professor, when he was at the age of 14-17, was Martin Sekulić. |

Mia Slavenska 1916-2002 Croatian ballet prodigy

 | Mia Slavenska, the greatest Croatian female classical dancer in history, was born in Brod na Savi, Croatia, on February 20, 1916, the daughter of Milan and Heddwiga (Palme) Čorak. Her early teachers include Josephina Weiss, former Ballerina of the Vienna State Opera, Margarita Froman, ballerina of the Bolshoi and Maximilian Froman, soloist of the Bolshoi. Mia Slavenska was a student at the Royal Academy of Music, Zagreb, Croatia for five years, where she majored in piano. She studied ballet in both Vienna and Paris.  | With this article we mark 60th anniversary of Studia Croatica, founded in 1960 in Buenos Aires. The journal has been founded by Croataian emmigrants. Its editors in chief were Ivo Bogdan (1960-1971), Franjo Nevistić (1971-1984), Radovan Latković (1984-1994), Joza Vrljičak (1995 till today, 2020, on the photo). Among numerous collaborators we mention Ernest Bauer, Rafo Bogišić, Gojko Borić, Christophe Dolbeau, Jozo Kljaković, Kristian Kreković, Mateo Martinic, Ivan Meštrović, C. Michael McAdams, Vinko Nikolić, Bogdan Radica, Zdravko Sančević, Carl Gustav Stroehm, Franjo Tuđman, Carmen Verlichak, Viktor Vida. In 2020, August Šenoa's novel Zlatarevo zlato (Goldsmith's Treasure) has been translated into Castilian: El Tesoro del Orfebre.

PingPongParkinson 2022 svjetsko prvenstvo planirano u Zagrebu

 | Nenad Bach, naš poznati glazbenik i mirovni aktivist, idejni začetnik programa PingPongParkinson, na svom se osobnom primjeru uvjerio u dobrobit igranja stolnoga tenisa. PingPongParkinson prepoznala je i Svjetska stolnoteniska federacija ITTF. Molimo zainteresirane osobe bez obzira na znanje igranja stolnoga tenisa da se jave, kako bi po gradovima Hrvatske organizirali stručne treninge. 2022 godine u Zagrebu je planirano Svjetsko prvenstvo PingPongParkinson, stoga svi zainteresirani igrači moći će biti dio toga prvenstva a možda i uspijemo dobiti i svjetskog prvaka iz Hrvatske. Marijana Grisnik Croatian painter from Strawberry Hill in Kansas City USA

 | Marijana Grišnik (b. Pintar) is a woman with strong ties both to Strawberry Hill and the ethnic heritage of its people. All four of her grandparents immigrated to Kansas City from Croatia. According to Marijana, "I was very fortunate in that my mother shared me with the people on the Hill. They all seemed to have a hand in raising me." As a child Marijana loved to sketch the sights of Strawberry Hill. It was, however, after the birth of her third child that she began painting her memories of growing up on Strawberry Hill. Through her canvases this self-taught artist has become the storyteller of this ethnic community. |

| The Croatian-born photographer relocated to Chicago at an early age and began photographing bands in college. As a young musician might, he took his mantra seriously: practice, practice, practice. It wasn't until he chanced upon the work of one of the greatest rock photographers of all time that lightning struck, and he realized what he wanted to do with his life. "I shot Jeff," Orlic says of his first photo shoot with Wilco's founder, Jeff Tweedy. "They liked it, and the rest is history. I just kind of never left." From the perspective of the bands and record labels for whom he works, Orlic's easygoing manner and ability to produce images efficiently and without getting in the way are equally as important as his artistic prowess. |

 | Tino Pattiera was born in 1890 and died 1966 in his beloved town of Cavtat. He was a world-renown opera singer. His voice was a heroic, dramatic and delightful tenor, with perfect diction and pronunciation for both the German and Italian opera opus. He was an irresistibly attractive figure on the stage and is remembered by his attractive voice and appearance. Among other accomplishments, he was a lead in The Saxony Kingdom Opera House in Dresden and guest soloist at The New York Metropolitan Opera. He was among the greatest Croatian singers in history. With this article we mark 130 years since the birth of Tino Pattiera in the town of Cavtat, near the city of Dubrovnik. |

 | Krasić's contribution to the formative period of Croatian language instruction abroad was massive and aimed at promoting our language and culture in North America. He left his homeland with a broad educational background and worked in the frame of Catholic missions in the Croatian communities on the dissemination of our language and culture in the anglophone world, all whilst discharging his complex parish duties while resident in the USA and in Canada. He enriched his new home through the organisation of Croatian language instruction and the printing of textbooks, magazines and books. (Dr. Vinko Grubišić.)

Zeljko Zuanovic Croatian priest and his wonderful world of sea shells

| Željko Zuanović is a Croatian catholic priest, with an interesting hobby: he collects see shells throughout the world. His collection of about 2500 shells is since 2020 exhibited in the village of Marijanci, a few kilometers of Valpovo the NE of Croatia. We recommend you to pay a visit to his collection of shells. Surprisingly, rev. Zuanović was born in continental part of Croatia, and his other hobbies include diving, singing, cooking and writing poetry. He has published a wonderful book entitled The World of Shells.
