Lika - Karlovac: A harmony of nature and tradition in Croatia
The mountain of Velebit is one of the most beautiful in Europe
Have you ever seen with your own eyes the sparkling clear springs grow into magnificent rivers? Have you ever truly perceived the power and the allure of the mysterious mountains? And finally, have you ever thought that their clarity and their power could become yours?
If you visit the Lika-Karlovac tourist region, the continental part of Croatia which is the link between Dalmatian littoral and the central section of the country, you shall be all that closer to the answer. For, that clarity and power are perhaps best conveyed by the wondrousness of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, the phenomenon which attracts with its uniqueness, but also with the effect it bears on both our mental and physical wellbeing. The National Park of Northern Velebit is an area of distinctive diversity of karstic forms, the wealth of all kinds of a living world and of breathtaking natural beauty in a relatively small area.
Croatian Glagolitic missal from 1402, written by Bartol Krbavac and originating from the region of Lika. The missal weighing 10kg is kept in the State Library in Berlin. From 1808 to 1888 it was kept in England (Kensington House).
Nikola Tesla 1856-1943, Croatian-American inventor born in the region of Lika in Croatia
The person of greatest international fame born in the region of Lika is Croatian-American inventor Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) who webt to the primary and secondary schools in the towns of Gospić and Karlovac. When his mother died, he paid a visit to Croatian capital Zagreb in 1892, where he gave a lecture about alternating current. On that occasion he said:
As a son of my homeland I feel it is my duty to help the city of Zagreb in every respect with my advice and work (Smatram svojom duznoscu da kao rodjeni sin svoje zemlje pomognem gradu Zagrebu u svakom pogledu savjetom i cinom; see the photo below),
We also mention brothers Mirko (1871-1913) and Stevo Seljan (1876-1936) born in the town of Karlovac, pioneers of ethnographic and geomorphological investigations in Ethiopia, Peru, Chile and Brazil. More about Nikola Tesla and brothers Seljan them can be seen at the History of Croatian Science.
Let us mention by the way that the father of Mia Čorak Slavenska (1916-2002) one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century, is from the region of Lika. We are preparing a special article about her for the readers of the CROWN.
Everybody knows the Plitvice Lakes, also in the region of Lika in Croatia, considered the most beautiful lakes in Europe.
And probably the greatest Croatian wrestler Marijan Matijević (1878-1951) in history was born in the region of Lika.
