Slalom – Wengen (Switzerland): Ivica Kostelic (Croatia) Has Won The Race
After winning in the Super-Combined, Ivica Kostelic has won slalom in Wengen

Ivica Kostelic is the winner of the slalom race in Wengen. The first slalom run Ivica Kostelic finished on third position with three hundredths of a second after the first Mario Matt from Austria. However, second slalom run Ivica Kostelic has drove awesome and he has won the race. Second place went to Andre Myhrer from Sweden with 85 hundredths of a second behind, and third place went to Fritz Dopfer from Germany with 88 hundredths of a second behind.

This is a 22. win in career of Ivica Kostelic and third victory in row in Wengen. Three consecutive victories in Wengen has won only legendary skier Ingemar Stenmark (1974,1975,1976). But for Ivica Kostelic, this is fourth victory in career in the slalom in Wengen (2002, 2010, 2011, 2012) and he has the total of six victories and a total of ten podiums in Wengen, and that way he holds the absolute record. The impressive results. Congratulations.

Ivica Kostelic: "A great honour to repeat Stenmark!"

WIth his Wengen slalom victories in 2010, 2011 and 2012 Ivica Kostelic has repeated an accomplishment set by probably the greatest slalom skier of all times, Mr. Ingemar Stenmark (SWE), who was the slalom winner in Wengen in 1975, 1976 and 1977.

"I know that for many people, even maybe for some skiers, this fact does not mean that much. But for me, since I am very interested in the history of the FIS Ski World Cup and since I have such a respect and admiration for the past generations of skiers - for me, I must say, it is truely a great honour that I was able to accomplish something that only 'big' Ingemar Stenmark was able to do.

This course in Wengen has given so much joy to me, my team and my family over the years. So I always feel one special energy coming here. Here in Wengen you have beautiful nature, huge mountain peaks... And to add to that all - you have one such slalom course that could be, if you ask me, treated as a role model slalom course for all the World Cup slalom races", Ivica Kostelic said to the reporters after today's Wengen slalom race.

The 32-year-old Croatian has now won five of the last seven World Cup events raced at the storied Swiss venue since January 2010. "I guess I have something with this mountain like no other," said Kostelic, whose third straight win in the Wengen slalom matched Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark (1975-77). "To find yourself in the same sentence as Ingemar Stenmark is the greatest honour. Unlike many other racers I really am following the history of skiing. They were legends for me." Kostelic's 22nd career World Cup victory also completed his Wengen weekend double of slalom and super-combined for the second time. His performance was roared on by hundreds of flag-waving Croatians among the 8,000 spectators, one lighting a red smoke flare in celebration. "It gave me a warm feeling around my heart," Kostelic said.Source www.independent.co.uk
