Miro Gavran, the most prolific and frequently performed Croatian writer
Miro Gavran, the contemporary Croatian author, was born in 1961. His works have been translated into more than thirty languages, and he is the most prolific and frequently performed writer. He has published eight books of prose for adults:
Forgotten Son, novel, 1989

How We Broke Our Legs, novel, 1995
Klara, novel, 1997
Margita or A Journey into a Former Life, a novel, 1999.
Judith,a novel, 2001.
John the Baptist, a novel, 2002

He read dramaturgy in the Academy for Theatre, Film and Television in Zagreb, and worked at Zagreb's ITD Theatre, first as dramatist (1986-1989) and later as artistic director (1989-1992). He conceived and developed the idea for, and later led, the Modern Croatian Drama project (1990-1992), and the ITD Theatre's series called Drama Library. The literary magazine Plima was his brainchild, and he edited it from 1993 to 1996. Since 1900 he has run a school of creative writing, drama and prose. He founded the Epilogue Theatre in Zagreb in 1995 and was the company's in-house playwright from 1995 until 2001. He has also tried his hand at directing his own plays. Together with his wife, the actress Mladena Gavran, he founded the GAVRAN Theatre in 2002.
Gavran's debut as playwright took place in 1983 when Gavella Theatre produced his first play, Creon's Antigone. Since then he has written some thirty plays and seen more than 120 first nights of his work in Croatia, The Netherlands, the USA, Slovenia, Poland, Bulgaria, Argentina, France, Greece, Hungary, Bosnia-Herzegovina, with more than 8000 performances all told of the following plays: Night of the Gods, The Loves of George Washington, Chekhov Says Good-Bye to Tolstoy, My Wife's Husband, Shakespeare and Elizabeth, Death of an Actor, Dr Freud's Patient, Forget Hollywood, Royalty and Rogues, All About Women, How To Kill The President and Nora in Our Time. The first Croatian playwright to be performed at the EUGENE O'NEILL THEATER CENTER (1999).
Gavran has also written six books of prose for young readers (All Sorts of Things in My Head, How Dad Won Mum, Head Over Heels in Love, Happy Days, Try to Forget), and has become one of the authors most frequently read by teenagers and younger children.
Miro Gavran has won 20 theatre and literary awards, among them the CENTRAL EUROPEAN TIME INTERNATIONAL LITERARY AWARD for the BEST CENTRAL EUROPEAN WRITER OF THE YEAR, 1999, given in Hungary. His novel Forgotten Son was included in the IBBY HONOUR LIST 2002 in Basle, Switzerland. Miro Gavran was awarded THE EUROPEAN CIRCLE AWARD FOR 2003.

- 2005 Miro Gavran's play Nora Today awarded the Ministry of Culture's Marin Dr¾iæ Prize.
- 2004 Play "Laughing Forbidden" received the "Marin Dr¾iæ" Award of the Croatian Ministry of Culture.
- 2003 The award "European Circle" was awarded to Miro Gavran for the exceptional contribution of promoting European valuesin the area of culture. The award was given by the "European Movement"
- 2002 Miro Gavran's novel Forgotten Son was selected for the IBBY HONOUR LIST 2002. The award ceremony will be held in the Swiss city of Basle in September.
- 2000 Miro Gavran's comedy Drivers for All Times was declared the best comedy in the Zagreb City Comedy Theatre's competition held in connection with the Theatre's 50th anniversary.
- 1999 "CENTRAL EUROPEAN TIME" INTERNATIONAL LITERARY AWARD FOR 1999 (Best Central European Writer of the Year). The ten-member adjudicators made their unanimous decision on the award in Budapest, Hungary
- 1997 THE LOVES OF GEORGE WASHINGTON performed by the Epilog Theatre company was voted best overall play at the 7th Marul's Days Theatre Festival in Split
- 1996 DEATH OF AN ACTOR performed by the Epilog Theatre company at the 6th Marul's Days Theatre Festival in Split brought Miro Gavran the prize for Best Drama Text in the New Theatre Reality selection.
- 1995 DEATH OF AN ACTOR was awarded the Marin Dr¾iæ prize, given by the Ministry of Culture of Croatia
- 1996 EVICTION, a comedy, won the prize for the most well-written comedy at the 19th Days of Laughter Theatre Festival in Zagreb
- 1995 HAPPY DAYS, a novel, won the Mato Lovrak award for the year's best novel in Croatia for children

Gavran's novel JOHN THE BAPTIST came out in Spanish, published by the well-known Argentinean publishing house, El Ateneo Editorial from Buenos Aires.
Mosaic Books from Zagreb published the 4th edition in Croatian of Gavran's novel HOW WE BROKE OUR LEGS.
Polish National Radio will be giving a premiere broadcast of Gavran's play CREON'S ANTIGONE. The leading roles will be played by Adam Ferency and Maja Hirsch. Karolina Brusic did the translation into Polish.
Panga Pank Publishers from Cracow will be publishing Miro Gavran's book HOW TO KILL THE PRESIDENT AND OTHER PLAYS. The plays have been translated into Polish by Anna Tuszynska, and the book contains 6 of Gavran's plays: GEORGE WASHINGTON'S LOVES, NIGHT OF THE GODS, ALL ABOUT MEN, HOTEL BABYLON, PARALLEL WORLD and HOW TO KILL THE PRESIDENT.
The second edition in the Albanian language of Gavran's novel for children, HAPPY DAYS, has come out, published by Andersen Publishers from Tirana. Shpresa Vreto translated the novel into Albanian.

The premiere of Gavran's play CHEKHOV SAYS GOOD-BYE TO TOLSTOY will be held at the SILVIA MONFORT Theatre in Paris on March 7.
Andrea Pucnik translated the play into French, Marie-France Lahore is the director with Pascal J. Mercier as asst. director. The scenography is by Marielle Spalony, costumes by Catherine Caldray, and lighting design by Daniel Molnier. The Players: Camille Cottin, Thomas DeWinter, Jean-Claude Drouot, Vincent Primault and Marie-France Santon.
The 5th edition in Croatian of Miro's book JOHN THE BAPTIST will be coming out in March, published by Mosaic Books, Zagreb.

Gavran's play ALL ABOUT WOMEN was premiered at the WANDY SIEMASZKOWEJ Theatre in the Polish town of Rseszowie on January 13. The translation into Polish was done by Anna Tuszynska, Krzysztof Jaworski was the director and scenographer, while Justyna Kolodziej, Malgorzata Machowska and Beata Zarembianka were the players.
ITG from Zagreb published Miro Gavran's book PLAYS in English. Seven of his plays are included: ALL ABOUT MEN, ALL ABOUT WOMEN, NORA IN OUR TIME, CREON'S ANTIGONE, HOW TO KILL THE PRESIDENT, DR FREUD'S PATIENT and NIGHT OF THE GODS. The plays were translated by: Nina H. Kay-Antoljak, Marie-Elise Zovko, Ellen Elis-Bursac and Laura Gudim.

The novel has been published in translation in Russian (Azbooka Publishers, St Petersburg), French (Theatroom noctuabundi, Paris), German (Seifert Verlag Vienna), Slovenian (Orbis, Ljubljana), Slovakian (Publisher Jan Jankovic, Bratislava), English (ITG, Zagreb), Norwegian (Engelstad Forlag, Oslo) and Serbian (Most Art, Zemun).
An edition is being prepared in Catalan (Editoral Ensiola, Muro-Mallorca), and it has been translated into Polish and Czech.
The PONTO theatrical company premiered "Judith" in Esperanto in Beijing, China, at the World Esperanto Conference.

Gavran's drama ALL ABOUT WOMEN will be premiered at the Theatar STUDIO DVA in Prague, the Czech Republic, on July 9, 2007. The play has been translated into Czech by Jiri Vobecky and Vlatka Souèek-Kapetanoviæ. The director is Jana Jitkova while the players are Anna ©i¹kova, Jana Krausova and Jitka Schneiderova.

Komedie V¹e o ¾enách je hra o mu¾ích, kteøí se domnívají, ¾e v¹echno ví... a to nejen o ¾enách. Je pøíle¾itostí pro tøi skvìlé hereèky, z nich¾ ka¾dá se pøedstaví v pìti rolích, a to v¹e v rytmu songù ¹edesátých let 20. století. Autorem hry je souèasný chorvatský dramatik, který vyprodává divadla od Washingtonu pøes Buenos Aires a¾ po indické mìsto Bombaj. [The comedy "All about women" is a play about three men that think to know everything.... not only about women. It opens the opportunity for three pretty girls, each appearing in five roles, in the rythm of songs of 1960s. Miro Gavran, né en 1961, est de loin l'auteur croate contemporain le plus prolixe et le plus traduit dans le monde. Avec ses romans et ses nouvelles pour enfants, il a récolté une quinzaine de prix littéraires internationaux parmi lesquels le Prix Littéraire international d'Europe Centrale (1999) et le Prix du Cercle Européen en 2003.
Difficile, vu de France, de mesurer la portée de cet écrivain de quarante-six ans, publié en dixsept langues. Dans la plupart des pays de l'Est, il compte parmi les références du théâtre moderne. Un festival lui est entièrement dédié chaque année en Slovaquie : le Gavranfest.
Ses oeuvres sont le reflet des problématiques actuelles, de la guerre dans les Balkans à l'alter mondialisme - sujet de sa dernière pièce de théâtre : How to kill the president. À côté de ses sujets à consonance politique, Gavran aime jouer avec l'Histoire, mettant en scène des rencontres entre de grandes figures et les traitant sur un mode plutôt imaginaire : Molière et Louis XIV dans La Nuit des dieux, Elisabeth II et Shakespeare dans Elisabeth et Shakespeare, ou Tolstoï et Tchekhov dans Tchekhov a dit adieu à Tolstoï.
Gavran a écrit sa première pièce, L'Antigone de Créon, à l'âge de vingt-deux ans et Tchekhov a dit adieu à Tolstoï à vingt-huit ans. En parallèle à une carrière de dramaturge riche d'une trentaine d'oeuvres, il s'est très tôt engagé dans la vie théâtrale de son pays. Directeur artistique du Teatar Gavran à Zagreb, il a fondé le théâtre Epilogue qui a déjà révélé bon nombre de metteurs en scène croates.

"Tchekhov a dit Adieu à Tolstoï"C'était une soirée étrange hier au théâtre Sylvia Montfort. Veille d'élection, retour de vacances ou autre raison, toujours est-il que le public était petit et resserré au centre de cette grande salle comme un groupe de manchots se tenant chaud. Destination Russie, alors forcément on anticipe. Les soirées d'été dans la "Clairière Lumineuse", villégiature de Tolstoï, peuvent être fraîches, sait-on jamais. Un certain Tchékhov, jeune écrivain à succès, est attendu avec sa jolie comédienne d'épouse pour ce qu'il croit être deux semaines de vacances. Mais le vieux lion (pas si fatigué qu'on croit) de la littérature russe a d'autres projets pour son invité. Quant à Sofia Tolstoï, le rôle d'épouse sacrifiée d'un grand génie lui va un peu trop bien pour ne pas éveiller la méfiance. Miro Gavran, auteur croate contemporain né en 1961, va bien au-delà du dialogue des morts pour installer une rencontre imaginaire entre deux monstres sacrés de la littérature russe, chacun à un stade bien différent de sa carrière. Ce simple contraste, au delà des personnalités distinctes, contient en soi une richesse dramatique qu'exploite à merveille l'auteur. La soif de succès, l'ambition, l'appétit de la jeunesse de Tchékhov, face à la neurasthénie, la malice et la manipulation du vieillard. Et puis il y a les femmes (et leurs gestes pleins de charme)! Elle ne sont pas en reste, bien au contraire, au petit jeu ambiant de la subversion. L'arme atomique de la séduction est déployée aux frontières. Tolstoï à beau prétendre que l'homme est fichu dès qu'il accepte de s'unir à l'une de ces créatures, leur corps souple s'attache et ne vous lâche plus telle une sangsue, pompant toute énergie et désir de création chez son partenaire. Il n'en est pas moins sensible aux charmes de la jeune et ravissante Olga Tchékhov. Cette pièce, bien construite, intelligente et drôle, évite le piège du bavardage intellectuel entre auteurs pour se concentrer sur l'intrigue, les personnages et la tension dramatique. La notoriété de Tchékhov et Tolstoï sert surtout à alimenter le comique des situations et non à en imposer au spectateur. Pour autant l'imaginaire n'est pas tué par des clowneries superflues, et on est ravi de pouvoir enfin épier cette rencontre mythique, de voir ainsi confrontés ces grands hommes du patrimoine mondial. La mise en scène nous installe dans l'intérieur d'une datcha stylisée, dont les volets sculptés laissent filtrer la lumière et les sons de l'été. Juste ce qu'il faut de réalisme pour situer la pièce dans son époque. Jean-Claude Drouot et sa barbe fournie campent un Tolstoï bougon, malicieux, imprévisible. Sofia, sa femme et contrepitre est solidement interprétée par Marie-France Santon. Vincent Primault étonne en Tchékhov, qu'on n'imaginait pas dans ce corps, et finit par convaincre. Camille Cottin en Olga flotte un peu entre l'amoureuse, la grisette et l'ambitieuse. Enfin le rôle muet du domestique des Tolstoï aurait pu être mieux exploité par un jeu corporel en contrepoint du texte (danseur, mime?). Petits détails car au total, ce fut un très bon moment.
The Festival d'Avignon, or Avignon Festival, is an annual arts festival held in French city of Avignon. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it is the oldest extant festival in France and one of the world's greatest. Miro Gavran's play CREON'S ANTIGONE will be premiered on July 6 in Avignon, France, at the International Theatre Festival. The play will be performed by the ROSEAU THEATER Company in French language by Andrea Pucnik's translation and will be played every day at the Festival until July 28. The directors are MF and JC BROCHE, while the main roles will be played by Mathier Barbier and Marie Broche.
