April - August The Croatian Heritage Museum is pleased to announce the exhibit, "Croatians in Sports". The exhibit pays tribute to Croatians around the world for their sports achievements. There are such sports giants as the Kostelics, Sukor, Ivanisevic, Kukoc, Cosic, Petrovic, as well as American-Croatian sports heroes; Roger Maris, Mickey Lolich, George Mikan, Fritzie Zivic and many more. The idea for the exhibit came from the research and record keeping of Mr. Steve Nekich, of Cleveland. Steve has gathered sports statistics of Croatians around the world and verified their Croatian roots. This is the first time that we are aware of that any organization has created a Croatian sports exhibit. The response has been fantastic with several people offering info that they had in their procession about Croatian sports figures. We welcome such donations and encourage others to do the same.
The Museum is located in the American-Croatian Lodge, Cardinal Stepinac, 34900 Lakeshore Blvd, near the intersection of Rte. 91 and Lakeshore Blvd, Eastlake, Ohio. The Museum is open Friday evenings from 7 PM to 10 PM and most Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Also special arrangements can be made for group tours.
And while you are at the Lodge you can plan to enjoy a Croatian meal at Dubrovnik Garden Restaurant located in the Lodge. For more information please contact Robert Jerin at rjerin@adelphia.net.

Chinese, Croatian Presidents Hail Bilateral Ties
 Jiang Zemin and Stjepan Mesic
Xinhuanet 2002-05-16 23:12:05
BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese President Jiang Zemin held
talks in Beijing on Thursday with visiting Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, hailing the steady progress in Sino-Croat friendship. During the talks, Jiang said in the past decade since the two counties established diplomatic relations, the ties between China and Croatia had steadily grown, mutual political trust had improved and cooperation in economic and scientific fields, culture, education and tourism had become closer. China and Croatia supported each other in international organizations and "we have become good partners in equality, mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation," Jiang said. While extending his appreciation for Croatia's adhering to the one-China principle, Jiang said China attached importance to Sino- Croat friendship, and was willing to elevate ties to a higher level based on the principles of a joint statement the two leaders signed. Jiang put forward four proposals for promoting bilateral ties in the new century: Firstly, to strengthen political dialogue at various levels to improve mutual political trust, and to seek mutual understanding and support on major issues of benefit to each country. Secondly, to actively expand economic cooperation and trade between the two sides. Thirdly, to widen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields including culture, education, science and medicine, to study the possibility of cooperation in finance and accelerate the process of making Croatia a tourism destination for Chinese citizens. Fourthly, to expand local government exchanges between both countries plus private exchanges.
Mesic briefly explained Croatia's foreign and domestic policies and views on the situation in Southeast Europe. Jiang said Croatia had important influence in middle and eastern Europe, and China was glad to see Croatia enjoying a stable society and booming economy, as well as improved living conditions for its people, developing sound ties with its neighbors, and playing an active role in regional and international affairs. China respected the development route and policies Croatia chose based on its domestic state, understood the efforts Croatia made in the integration of Europe, and appreciated the plural foreign policy of Croatia, said Jiang. Of the current international situation, Jiang said China agreed with democratic international ties and held that all countries no matter whether big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, were equal members of the international community, and had equal rights to participate in international affairs. Jiang said the diversity of the world should be expected. Each country had the right to choose its own development route to suit its domestic conditions, and existing differences in social systems and values should not be regarded as barriers to developing ties between countries. No country could be allowed to establish hegemonism and interfere in other countries' internal affairs, Jiang added. Jiang stated China's stance on anti-terrorism, noting that no other international or regional organizations could take the place of the United Nation whose authority and importance made it the most popular international organization in the world. Jiang hoped the leading role of the U.N. in international affairs, including the fight against terrorism would be further strengthened.
Mesic hailed China's achievements in reform and opening up to the outside world, adding that Croatia attached great importance to the positive role China played in international affairs as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Mesic said the distance between Croatia and China would not influence bilateral cooperation in various fields, and hoped the two countries, both as members of the World Trade Organization ( WTO), would improve cooperation in the new century. Mesic added that Croatia adhered to the "One China" policy, and agreed to fight terrorism through the U.N.. After the talks, the two sides signed the Joint Statement of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Croatia on Deepening Their Relationship through Mutually Beneficial Cooperation. They also signed an Agreement on Scientific Co-operation Between the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Agreement on Establishment of Friendly Economic and Trade Partnership Between Liaoning Province of P.R.China and Primorsko-Goranska County of Republic of Croatia. Before the talks, Jiang presided a welcome ceremony for Mesic. Enditem
China, Croatia Issue Joint Statement of Cooperation ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xinhuanet 2002-05-17 00:28:03
BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese President Jiang Zemin and visiting Croatian President Stjepan Mesic signed a Joint Statement on Thursday aimed at improving Sino-Croat cooperation after talks in Beijing. The statement, titled the Joint Statement of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Croatia on Strengthening Their Relationship with Mutually Beneficial Cooperation, said that Jiang and Mesic shared similar views on issues covered during their talks. It said China and Croatia were both dedicated to world peace and believed it was necessary to narrow the gap between developed and developing countries. Terrorism posed a danger to all countries in the world and solutions should be sought to deal with the issue, it said. The statement listed eight points as follows:
1. The two sides are satisfied with the friendly cooperation between them since they established diplomatic relations ten years ago. They are willing to abide by comprehensively-accepted international rules and develop bilateral ties plus ties with other countries on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co- existence.
2. The two sides are willing to strengthen dialogue at various levels and exchange views on bilateral ties, reform, development and the international situation on various levels.
3. The two sides are satisfied with sustained growth in economic cooperation and trade between them, and are willing to improve mutually beneficial cooperation in accordance with market economy principles.
4. The two sides welcome and totally support exchanges and cooperation in science, culture, education, medicine, tourism, sports and other fields.
5. Croatia will continue to adhere to the one-China principle and China appreciates the efforts made by Croatia in joining Europe's integration process. China believes Croatia plays a positive role in safeguarding regional stability.
6. The two sides agree that all countries, whether big or small, rich or poor, are equal in the international community, and should enjoy equal rights in participating in international affairs. The two are willing to join with the international community to promote the establishment of a just and rational new international order.
7. The two sides stress the importance of the United Nations as it is the most important inter-governmental organization, and are willing to strengthen its leading role in handling international relations. The two will honor the tenet and principles of the UN Charter, and are willing to continue cooperation in the UN and other international organizations.
8. the two sides believe terrorism poses a serious danger to civilization, and support the fight against terrorism of any form. They hold that dual standards should not be adopted in fighting terrorism, international cooperation should be pursued and the role of the United Nations should be recognized. Enditem

All eyes on Croatia
Rebecca Heald reports on the latest excitement to emerge from Europe's eastern playground
LONDON, New York, Paris, Milan, Zagreb: the latter might not yet be on the fashion map but that is all set to change thanks to design trio I-GLE's first independent catwalk show on May 7.
I-GLE: catch them if you can. Picture: Ivana Vucic 'I-GLE', Croatian for both 'sewing needle' and 'Hey, look!', was established by Martina Vrdoljak Ranilovic in 1998 with Romano Decker and Natasa Mihaljcisin joining in consequent years. Together they have revolutionised the Croatian fashion industry attracting a cult-like following of fashionistas and socialites the world over.

Taking shape: the collection hanging in I-GLE's Zagrebboutique
Citing 'the unexpected' as their main inspiration, their designs are characterised by stray threads, complex layering, unusual colour combinations and themes of disintegration and deconstruction. Wildly anticipated in Croatia and beyond, I-GLE is following the recent examples of Dolce & Gabbana, Julien Macdonald and other enlightened designers by broadcasting the show across the globe via a live webcast. Log on to www.i-gle.com at 20:00 GMT (21:00CET) to witness a show that promises to set new standards for both couture and the catwalk.

(E) Martic and Mrksic surrendered to the ICTY
|
MORNING NEWS 15.5.2002. Former Croatian Serb leader Milan Martic and former JNA officer Mile Mrksic have surrendered to the ICTY and have been taken to custody at the Scheveningen prison. It is still not clear when they are to enter their pleas. Martic has been indicted for the rocketing of Zagreb in 1995, while Mrksic has been indicted for war crimes committed in Vukovar in 1991.Prior to leaving Belgrade, Mrksic did not speak to the press, while Martic said he was innocent and would be back soon if the ICTY is a just court. The ICTY spokesperson Florence Hartmann has stated that the ICTY prosecution was very pleased with the arrival of the two indictees, but is also expecting of Belgrade to send all of the ICTY indictees to The Hague, including Veselin Sljivancanin and Miroslav Radic. Belgrade authorities have unsuccessfully attempted to capture some 17 people over the past week that were all indicted by the ICTY. All of the indictees could not be found at the addresses the police were supplied with. Commenting on the surrender of Mile Mrksic and Milan Martic to the ICTY, the Deputy Prime Minister Goran Granic said that he was pleased with the decisiveness of the ICTY to bring to justice all criminals and added that he hoped Martic and Mrksic would not be the only ones tried for war crimes committed in Croatia. Martic’s indictment is expected to be extended to crimes perpetrated by the so-called Knin police against Croatian civilians.

(E) Tarbuk recipient of the "Slavenski" award
|

Mladen Tarbuk Tarbuk is Recipient of the "Slavenski" Award The recognition given to Mladen Tarbuk for his composition "Dreamers", inspired by Nikola Sop's poetry. A rich annual harvest of Croatian music - no less than 59 premieres.
ZAGREB, April 10. - Vjesnik's now already traditional award "Josip Stolcer Slavenski" for new works of Croatian composers performed for the first time in 2001 went to Mladen Tarbuk for his vocal-instrumental cycle "Dreamers", which had its premiere at the International Music Platform in Pula. It was performed by the coloratura soprano Lidija Horvat-Dunjko and the instrumental ensemble "Cantus", under the direction of the composer.
The jury consisting of Tonko Ninic (Chairman), Erika Krpan, Visnja Pozgaj, Frano Parac and Nenad Turkalj did not have an easy task, because Croatian music was enriched last year by no less than 59 new works of orchestral, vocal, stage, and chamber music. Such a number of premieres was also due to the fact that last year the Zagreb Biennale of Contemporary Music took place, so that domestic composers had sufficient opportunity for placing their new works, apart from the regular concert programs and the Pula event.
The jury selected the candidates in three rounds of voting, the first of which yielded fourteen composers: Zeljko Brkanovic (two compositions), Zoran Juranic, Vjekoslav Njezic, Pavle Despalj, Ivo Josipovic, Igor Kuljeric, Olja Jelaska, Mladen Tarbuk, Dubravko Detoni, Miroslav Miletic, Davorin Jagodic, Kresimir Seletkovic, Berislav Sipus and Pero Gotovac. After the second round of voting, the short list consisted of Berislav Sipus with his cycle of piano preludes "Nights", Igor Kuljeric with his Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra, and Mladen Tarbuk with his "Dreamers", also Pavle Despalj with his Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, Vjekoslav Njezic with the composition "Traces" for orchestra and electronics, Dubravko Detoni with his electronic composition "Secret", Pero Gotovac with his choral composition "Misa Delmata", and Ivo Josipovic with his "Tuba ludens" for tuba and orchestra. In the third and final round Mladen Tarbuk was declared the laureate for his composition "Dreamers", which will be performed on May 9 at the 29th Musical Memorial "Josip Stolcer Slavenski" in Cakovec.
The jury's explanation: Mladen Tarbuk (b.1962) has been prominent on the Croatian musical scene for a number of years, not only as a prolific and talented composer, but also as conductor and organizer. He has been responsible for the systematic formation and improving quality of the Symphonic Wind Instrument Orchestra of the Croatian Army, and has recently also been appointed manager of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. As a composer he has been performed almost more frequently abroad than at home, at numerous events featuring contemporary music, where he has achieved recognition and received numerous foreign awards.
Nikola Sop's dream visions His "Dreamers" were inspired by a cycle of poems by one of the great Croatian poets of the 20th century, Nikola Sop, who has been described as "a wonderful Catholic poet with a tragic destiny". These are spiritual poems expressing dream visions, and it was their metaphysical depth that induced the composer to evoke brilliantly the atmosphere of this poetry through a particularly complex instrumentation. The critics have also noticed that in this respect his work is not comparable to any other in Croatian music to date. The composition has also depended on the collaboration of an exceptional singer, the soprano Lidija Horvat-Dunjko, who is able to execute coloratura passages of dizzying heights, all the way to the third A; by employing an unusual set of instruments in his chamber music orchestra, the composer has devised surprising and very striking sound combinations which complement the voice of this brilliant singer.
Nenad Turkalj (Vjesnik, Thursday, April 11, 2002) (Translated by generosity of Ivana Jeric)

(H) Dogodilo se na danasnji dan

DOGODILO SE NA DANASNJI DAN Moj HThinet - http://moj.hinet.hr http://moj.hinet.hr/sarhiv.asp?dan=14&mjesec=5&time=Potra%9Ei&sercat=vremeplov - 1998.: Umro Frank Sinatra
Postepeno niže uspjehe i privlači milijune djevojaka. No, procvat rocka zadaje ozbiljan udarac njegovoj karijeri. Poput prave "zvijezde" čitavog je života punio stranice žutog tiska svojim brakovima, avanturama, navodnim vezama s mafijom i svojom sklonošću piću.
