Caroline and husband Ernst have apparently fallen in 
love with the area after spending a month cruising the 
country’s coastline last summer

Princess Caroline of Monaco and her husband Prince Ernst of 
Hanover are about to shell out on a new island retreat in 
Croatia. The couple apparently plan to buy property on one of 
the Brijuni Islands, a national park and former holiday 
getaway of Yugoslavia’s former ruler Marshal Tito.

Once popular with such Hollywood luminaries as Elizabeth 
Taylor and Richard Burton, Croatia returned to favour with the 
jet set following the end of the Balkans war. Caroline and 
Ernst seem to have fallen in love with the area after spending 
a month cruising the country’s coastline last summer.

Ivana Trump’s former husband Riccardo Mazzucchelli has already 
converted one of the islands into an international resort and 
the president of Istria, the county in which the pair are set 
to invest, was ebullient about the effects of the royal 
decision. “The islands are soon to become one of the world’s 
most famous destinations. A concrete move by Princess Caroline 
can be expected within the month,” he says.

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) - When Zeljka Vidic is handed her diploma, she will have taken one more step on what has been a long and perilous road.

She endured war and exile, illness and poverty. Her family barely escaped ``ethnic cleansing'' in Croatia. Half a world away, she became a tennis player at Idaho, and will graduate Saturday.

``In 16 years I've had some extraordinary people play for me,'' tennis coach Greg South said. ``She is head and shoulders above the rest.''

On Sept. 11, tennis practice at Idaho was canceled after the terrorist attacks. Vidic showed up the next day wearing a big blue ribbon, South recalled. She told her teammates how she had survived war with her humanity intact.

``I chose not to hate,'' South recalled Vidic saying. ``Instead, I chose to fight back for freedom and a betterlife.''

Vidic, known as Z around campus, was born in Vukovar, in eastern Croatia, in 1979. Her parents and older brother had a comfortable life there until 1991.

Then an invading Yugoslav army laid a three-month siege and began indiscriminate shelling of the city. About 1,700 Croats were killed when the invaders and local Serbs overwhelmed the city.

About 22,000 Croats, including Vidic and her family, were expelled in late 1991 by the new rulers. Her family spent seven years as refugees in Zagreb, struggling with poverty and the memories of the brutality they witnessed.

In 1995, the U.N. war crimes tribunal indicted three former Yugoslav army officers for crimes against humanity during the siege of Vukovar. The trial of one is under way in The Hague, Netherlands. Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic also is on trial for alleged war crimes committed by Serb forces in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.

Vidic grows quiet and uncomfortable when asked about the siege of Vukovar, which often pitted Croats against Serbian neighbors.

``Somebody wanted to hurt my family,'' she said. ``We assumed it was a neighbor.''

There was an attempt to bomb the family's home.

``People were just crazy,'' she said. ``Everybody would just hate everybody.''

In Zagreb, Vidic earned a spot in a tennis club with a coach. She was the only tennis player in her family. She finished high school in 1997 and wanted to play in the United States. South learned of Vidic from friends in Europe, and watched a videotape.

``It was obvious there was a huge talent there,'' South said.

But over time, he came to respect her even more for her character and attitude.

``She went through some very difficult things,'' South said.``I believe tennis helped hersurvive.''

Just before she left for Idaho in 1998, her father, Stjepan, had a stroke. Vidic did not want to leave, but her father urged her to take her scholarship and head overseas.

``It was not easy to leave him,'' she said.

The wheat fields, wide-open spaces and natural beauty of Idaho immediately appealed toVidic. She also reveled in the chance to get an education and play tennis at the same time.

``We traveled a lot and I saw a lot of things in the U.S.,'' Vidic said. She enjoyed trips to California and to Seattle, but ``I really like Hawaii.''

She also loved playing with a team, but she understood what was required of her.

``You have to win,'' she said.

Win she did. As a junior, she led the Vandals with a 15-4 record. After recovering from knee surgery in January, Vidic was 16-10 in singles and 20-10 in doubles during her senior season.

``She has the best backhand of anybody who ever played for me,'' South said.

Even at Idaho she could not escape her past.

During one of her first matches, she was nervous at playing a woman from Yugoslavia, South said. When he asked her why, Vidic replied that the woman was a cousin of a Serbian boy who had terrorized her old neighborhood in Vukovar after the invasion. But both players came off the court laughing.

Vidic finished her career with 41 victories in singles and a school record 41 wins in doubles, 
despite missing nearly all of her sophomore season with torn knee ligaments from a skiing 
accident. That injury led to three knee operations.

This month, Vidic was chosen as the northwest winner of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship award. Only eight of the 4,000 women playing Division I tennis win the award.

In April, Vidic was among 174 athletes around the country who won an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award. It provides a $6,000 scholarship next year as she pursues a master's degree in sports and recreation management at the university.

The 23-year-old Vidic graduates with a degree in finance, and would like to become a U.S. citizen. This summer she plans to teach tennis and is looking for other work.

``I like Moscow in the summer. It's like a little oasis for me,'' she said. ``I feel at peace here.''

Her family has returned to its home in Vukovar, but the situation there is still tense, Vidic said. Croatians and Serbs live largely separate lives in the city now.

``We are trying to forgive,'' she said. ``But we will not forget.''

Tennis Trio looks to Tear up California

In the sports world few can name the four tournaments that make up the 
Grand Slam (that’s tennis lingo), let alone who has won these 
internationally prestigious events. In fact, many see tennis as a 
mindless, erratic game where two people swat at a little green ball, as 
if it was a pesky fly, amidst a chorus of primal grunts. 
Oh contraire; it is a physical test of one’s endurance, a challenge of 
precision accuracy, and a chess match of cerebral warfare. 
So how will the Vandal women’s tennis team fare as they embark upon a 
whirlwind road trip that has them competing against Pacific, San Jose 
St., and Santa Barbara on consecutive days? 
“We’re going to have our hands full, but we will compete with them, and 
we will compete well,” said head coach Greg South. 
South’s foreshadowing may prove true on both counts. He considers both 
Pacific and Santa Barbara to be strong teams, each vying for the Big 
West title. However, the Vandals will bring to California a young but talented team 
lead by senior Katrina Burke. “She’s as good as anyone in the 
conference. She could be the best player,” South rightfully said, Burke 
was the No. 2 player in the conference last year. 
Amidst a flurry of backhand flurries, Burke spoke of her final year as a 
Vandal. “I know I can be just as good as them [my opponents] on any 
given day.” After three years of analyzing her opponents weaknesses from across the 
net, her words may echo in their ears this season. If not her 
aggressive, net charging play will leave them in a fit of dizzying 
frustration. The Australian native Burke is not the only spice South can draw out of 
his cauldron. Depth is the word he uses to describe his melting pot of 
talent. Freshmen Pooja Deshmukh and Zeljka Vidic will vie for the 2 and 3 spots 
while Glorianna Serrano, Cameron Erickson, and Barbara Perez-Martinez 
will fill out the rest of the lineup. South emphatically pointed out 
that none of the spots are set in stone; instead they will be in a state 
of rotation. All in all, they pose a formidable lineup for all 
challengers. Another challenge is a lesson in geography. Deshmukh’s graceful baseline 
play was honed in her home country of India. 
Her father began coaching her on the fine points of ground strokes at 
the age of eleven. Over the years Pooja ascended the ranks of India’s 
tournament circuit. In so doing, she dethroned the number one junior 
player, as well as conquering the national doubles championship. 
Before arriving in Moscow ten days ago, and stepping foot on snow for 
the first time, she was ranked No. 6 in India. 
With this in mind she humbly spoke of he goals for this season. “I’m 
just trying to establish myself and work on my weaknesses.” Only a 
freshman, her future looks sweet. 
Fellow freshman Zeljka Vidic may be the smoldering candles on the 
multicultural cake that South is baking. In Croatian her name means 
“wish”. “My parents wanted a daughter, I granted their wish,” she said with a 
blush. Zeljka began her apprenticeship in the art of serve and volley at what 
she considers a late age of ten. If so, this Croatian has developed 
quickly, dazzling her home country on the creamy clay courts of Eastern 
Europe. As she makes the transition to the hard courts of the US, South beams 
with excitements when he talks about her ability to excel as an all 
court player, who has a natural feel for the ball. 
All six women may be divided by oceans and massive chunks of land, but 
no dissension looms in the shadows of this team that Deshmukh calls, 
“absolutely internationally diverse.” Instead they are a close group who 
look forward to learning about each other’s cultures and languages. 
What also draws them together is South’s coaching philosophy. “We stay 
with a goal focus, not an outcome focus.” It is a philosophy that 
emphasizes performance achievement, and individual accountability. His 
philosophy may differ with some who still cling to the “just win, baby” 
approach, but his approach has been successful. 
After months of waking at seven o’clock in the morning for physical 
training, along with countless hours of practice, the Vandals are 
confident about their chances over the weekend. 
“I think this trip will be successful if we play smart,” said Burke. If 
intelligence has anything to do with success [combined GPA of 3.17] look 
for all of their wishes to be granted in California.

Intelektualac u hrvatskoj politickoj sadasnjici

U posljednje smo vrijeme svjedoci medijskih «carki» izmedu intelektualaca i
politicara u kojima prvi ocjenjuju «lik i djelo» politicara, dok ovi drugi
prozivaju intelektualce kao «voajere» pripisujuci im puko kritizerstvo i
bijeg od odgovornosti za stanje u drustvu. No dok je pojam politicara svakom
jasan, a u ironicnom smislu predstavlja covjeka koji spretno izrazava ili
ostvaruje svoje zelje umjesnim ophodenjem, prema filozofu Niccoli
Machiavellija pocesto i na marginama etike i postenja, dotle pojam
intelektualca za razne ljude, pa i za one dobrano obrazovane, ima vrlo
razlicita znacenja.
Inteligencija predstavlja drustveni sloj obrazovanih ljudi koji vrse strucne
poslove i znanstvena istrazivanja utemeljene na misaonim procesima. To su
ljudi koji stvaraju nove duhovne i znanstvene vrijednosti, ali i oni koji u
praksi primjenjuju ta ista dostignuca na raznim podrucjima ljudskog
stvaralastva s ciljem stvaranja opceg dobra covjecanstva. O njima, dakle,
ovisi dinamika tehnoloskog napretka drustva kao i pridruzeni civilizacijski
iskorak, oni su prema Kantu i Hegelu istinski kreatori univerzalne povijesti
covjecanstva. No inteligenciju sacinjavaju isto tako vrhunski reproduktivci:
sjajni pijanist Pogorelic umjetnicke skladbe Wagnera, Chopina i Verdija
priblizava sirokom slusateljstvu, dajuci pritom tim djelima i neki svoje
osobne znacajke, tehnolozi su Flemingovo otkrice penicilina pretocili u
industrijski proizvod za spas milijuna zivota, ekonomski su strucnjaci
znanstvene makroekonomske postulate nobelovaca Keynesa i Friedmana pretocili
u gospodarske odrednice globalnog trzista. Svi su oni, kreativni i
reproduktivni znalci, visoki znanstvenici i vrhunski razvojni strucnjaci,
pripadnici sloja inteligencije.
No intelektualac, tko je to? Zar puki pripadnik inteligencije? Mozda i jest,
ako ga shvatimo kao sastavnicu ove zbirne imenice. No shvatimo li ga kao
vrhunskog Intelektualca doci cemo do sasvim druge definicije, ili tocnije
do zbroja nuznih duhovnih uvjeta koji krase njegovu osobnost. Opcenito se
smatra da su to tolerantni ljudi visoke kreativnosti, znanstvene ili
socijalne, a ne samo reprodukcijskih znacajki, osobe sirokog obrazovanja i
drustvenih pogleda, polivalentni pojedinci koje resi izrazajnost i priznata
kvaliteta na mnogim podrucjima, ali prije svega duhovna neovisnost i
neslomivost, uspravan hod kroz zivot i atribucija «nepokvarljive robe». U
pravilu je sve to pridruzeno i odbojnoscu prema bogatstvu i bogacenju.
Koliko smo takvih ljudi upoznali tijekom zivota? Cini mi se ne samo da ih je
vrlo, vrlo malo, nego tvrdim da nisam sreo politicara koji zadovoljava ovaj
obrazac pridruzen visokom intelektualcu. Sjetimo se imena Gotovca, Supeka,
Zupanova, Lasica, Silobrcica i Grubisica, te jos ponekih.
A sto se u politici dogada s intelektualcem? Politicari ce rasirenih ruku
docekati kreativca, saslusati ga, koristiti njegove misli i projekte, cesto
ih prividno odbacujuci zbog navodne politicke neprihvatljivosti, a kroz
mjesec-dva ili godinu-dvije, plasirat ce ih u javnosti kao svoje umotvorine,
a iskoristenu ce osobu marginalizirati, odbaciti i politicki obezvrijediti.
Pogubno je za buducnost Hrvata sto siroke mase glasaca nisu shvatile da se
kreativni intelektualci ne nalaze «na cesti», ne pobiru s burze rada, ne
stvaraju dekretom birokracije, ali je jos pogubnije sto nije shvaceno da
samo oni, i to upravo takvi intelektualci, mogu danas, u ovom bespucu i
misaonoj magli trasirati put prema uspjesnijoj civilizaciji. Svi mi kao
narod nismo shvatili da takvi pojedinci mogu siriti oko sebe samo duh koji i
sami posjeduju, dakle klimu kreativnosti, istine, analiticnosti i postenja,
da ce zahtijevati od svih u svom okolisu upravo takvo djelovanje, da ce
prenositi sposobnost uocavanja bitnih, realnih a ne verbalnih, vrijednosti
za opce dobro od nebitnog i stetnog politikantsva, da ce nuzno stvarati oko
sebe atmosferu rada, stvaralastva i zdravog natjecanja, nasuprot danasnjem
politickom mediju spletaka, karijerizma i dodvoravanja. Samo oni, istinski
intelektualci, zato mogu pridonijeti ozdravljanju naroda od svekolikih
virusa koji trajno unistavaju drustvo, samo oni mogu biti istinski luconose
duhovnog ozdravljenja hrvatske nacije i vodici na putu prema obzorima
sretnijeg zivota.
U ovoj duhovnoj i civilizacijskoj mocvari u kojoj se nasao hrvatski narod
gospodarska je kataklizma samo rezultanta gnjiljenja moralnih zasada,
rusenja gradanske etike, bujanja egoizma, klanjanja zlatnom teletu, teznji
iskompleksiranih bolesnika za potpunom vlascu nad ljudima i uskracivanja
elementarnih gradanskih prava svakom tko ugrozava partikularne interese
politickih mocnika. Duhovni sklop intelektualca predstavlja istinski antipod
mentalnom profilu vecine hrvatskih politicara. Zato je svaki poziv na
ukljucenje intelektualaca na aktualnu politicku platformu suvisan manevar i
predstavlja mission impossible.
Intelektualac sa svojim civilizacijskim i kulturoloskim profilom, kao i po
njemu izabrani suradnici, jedini mogu trasirati put izlaska Hrvatske iz ove
opce trulezi. To je danas posao za njih, samo oni mogu vratiti duhovni kurs
hrvatskog broda na pravi smjer. Toga se upravo boje politicki aparatcici, i
to kako oni proizasli iz proslosti, tako i mnogi novokomponirani, jer ih
ovakav scenarij izlaze na politicku vjetrometinu. Uostalom, nije li bas zato
jos jugokomunizam operirao sintagmom «posteni intelektualci», ciljajuci
pritom na pokorne sluge i srebroljubne puzavce iskljucivsi pritom sve
istinske intelektualce s pozornice drustvenog utjecaja. Zar nije prvi
predsjednik hrvatske drzave ponavljao da su svi «pravi i drzavotvorni»
intelektualci uz njega, a da izvan njegova pokreta intelektualaca i nema?
Nisu li danasnji politicki vrhovnici, svaki u svom dvoristu, vec
marginalizirali i/ili eliminirali impozantnu listu intelektualaca i
pripadnike inteligencije, koji su dosada vec mogli pozitivno utjecati na
propadanje hrvatskog drustva u zivi pijesak.
Cini se da je u pravu Igor Mandic tvrdeci da je poziv politicara
intelektualcima za ukljucenje u politiku vodi do ukidanja same mogucnosti
autonomnog postojanja intelektualaca. Mislim da je duhovni habitus vecine
nasih politicara i istinskih intelektualaca razlicit poput fotografskog
negativa i pozitiva, tako da zapravo i ne postoji mogucnost njihove trajne
koegzistencije na politickom poslu. Ako je tocan bar dio rijeci profesora
Kregara u razgovoru objavljenom u Nedjeljnoj Dalmaciji ovih dana prema
kojima nase stranke nemaju profilirane opce interese ili interese svojih
clanova, nego interese stranackih vodstava, .ako one nisu zajednice
simpatizera koje dijele isti svjetonazor vec organizacije podcinjene uskim
stranackim vodstvima,. ako sluze tek kao motor za drustvenu promociju i to
demotivira sve one koji misle da politika nije bitka za polozaje i
materijalno bogacenje vec za opce dobro,.. ako je njihova karakteristika
nedostatak unutarstranacke demokracije vezano uz financijsko poslovanje i
kandidaturu na izborima.cini se da ne samo odabrani intelektualci, nego ni
vrhunski pripadnici inteligencije nemaju mjesta na ovakvoj politickoj sceni
Hrvatske. No tada nije samo sudbina politickog zivota ove zemlje zapecacena,
nego je i buducnost Hrvatske drzave obojena vrlo tamnim bojama.
Drustvena kriza u koju tonemo ima i svoje dno. Ono se moze doseci, poslije
rasprodaje svega vrijednog u drustvenom naslijedu, novim valom
nezaposlenosti i prestankom djelovanja stozernih drustvenih funkcija,
posebno zdravstva i mirovinskog fonda. To bi destabiliziralo regiju i
ugrozilo pridruzene geopoliticke cinitelje. Tada cemo sigurno docekati nekog
nama dodijeljenog Petritscha s ovlastenjima starorimskog diktatora. Zar
nemamo dovoljno mudrosti da zaustavimo ovakav scenarij?

Ivona Josipovic is a 16-year-old foreign-exchange student from 
Zagreb, Croatia, currently attending West High in Salt Lake City.

Deseret News: Ivona, when did you first come to the United States and why?
Ivona Josipovic: In August. I came here as an exchange student to 
graduate high school and get introduced to American culture before I go to 
college. I want to study here.
DN: What was your initial impression?
Ivona: I was surprised. It wasn't the image from all the movies.
DN: What image is that?
Ivona: That this is the land of opportunity; that everything is fun 
and entertaining. That there are no rules or restrictions. But guess what 
— there are!
DN: What is your favorite thing about living in America?
Ivona: School is pretty good. So many nice people. And shopping! 
Shopping; I like shopping. I love Banana Republic.
DN: What is your overall impression of Utah?
Ivona: It is a very traditional community — very family-oriented. 
Not the European style.
DN: What is the European style?
Ivona: It is much more free. Teens in Europe are treated as adults. 
Here, I can't do anything without a legal guardian. But at least I can 
drive here.
DN: When can you drive in Croatia?
Ivona: When you are 18. . . . But you can do anything else (as a 
teen.) In Europe, all industries — food, entertainment, etc. — are 
oriented around teens. Live entertainment over there is all about us; here 
it isn't.
DN: What do you miss most about Croatia?
Ivona: I miss my family and friends, and I miss senior year. (In 
Croatia), when you're a senior, you don't do much in school. Instead, 
there are all sorts of social events. Like when you graduate, we have a 
day where you can do whatever you want without any legal restrictions — 
graffiti, break things, stuff like that. (Pause.) And I miss the food!
DN: What food here do you like?
Ivona: Frozen yogurt. We didn't have it in Croatia. But there is too 
much fast food here . . . it's all artificial. All the apples are the 
exact same shape and size, all shiny and perfect.
DN: A lot of American students don't know anything about Croatia. 
What is it like?
Ivona: Croatia is a former part of Yugoslavia, and it kind of 
connects with central and southeastern Europe. There is a much more 
European government and lifestyle (than here). There are beautiful beaches 
— it is the best country to go for summer vacation! The best country in 
the world. It is very connected to other European countries. I would like 
to stay in the U.S. for college, but if I do, I'll go back to Croatia every summer.
DN: Where would you like to go to college?
Ivona: On the East Coast, in Boston or New York. Boston is beautiful 
and historic. And there is a big Croatian community in New York.
DN: Do you have any advice to give to American teens?
Ivona: For an international country, we have a lot to gain. Our 
culture has so many opportunities that American kids aren't aware of. Be 
sure to take advantage of them!

ZIVJETI NA OSOVINI KNIN-KIJEVO-PARAPLEGIJA

Cijenjene dame i gospodo

Osobno bi mi bilo vrlo drago ako nadjete vremena i volje procitati ovo moje pismo od pocetka do kraja. Iako znam da postoji mogucnost da ste do sada vec primali ne mali broj pisama slicnog sadrzaja i iako slutim da ste mozda i sami iscrpljeni slicnim vapajima. Zelim Vas ovdje upoznati sa akad. slikarom i graficarom Antom Teskerom i njegovom neveselom situacijom te Vas uljudno zamoliti da, ako ste ikako u mogucnosti obratite pozornost na tog, teskom sudbinom pogodjenog kreativca, koji ce se beskrajno veseliti ako mu se javite barem sa par ljubaznih rijeci. 

Ante Teskera rodjen je 1972. u Kninu a do 1980. živio je sa obitelji u selu Kijevo koje je svehrvatskoj budnoj javnosti poznato po strahoti koja je nanesena tom selu i hrvatskom stanovnistvu od strane Srba. 1980. Ante je nastradao u automobilskoj nesreci s posljedicom trajne oduzetosti donjih ekstremiteta (paraplegija). Osnovnu je školu zapoceo u Kijevu, potom nastavio u Kraljevici te završio u Zagrebu u Centru za odgoj, obrazovanje i osposobljavanje djece i mladeži. Tu je priveo kraju srednju upravno-birotehnicku školu. Dvije je slijedece godine boravio u Centru kao prognanik. 1995. uspijeva se upisati na Akademiju Likovnih Umjetnosti u Zagrebu na kojoj je diplomirao u veljaci 2001. u klasi prof. Miroslava Šuteja. Obracam Vam se s molbom u nadi da ste u mogucnosti na bilo koji nacin pomoci ovom mladom umjetniku u nezavidnoj situaciji u kojoj se nasao. Mozda ste ona(j) koji/koja ima ideja kako pomoci, bilo savjetom ili konkretnom transparentom akcijom tipa organizirati izlozbe njegovih radova, otkupiti koji od radova, preporuciti umjetnika onima koji bi znali i(li) mogli uciniti slicno. Kao likovnjak Ante Teskera radi u tehnikama ulja na platnu, grafika (suha igla, bakropis + aquatinta, litografija) i kolazi a poznata mu je i problematika stolnog izdavastva odnosno dizajnerski rad, od ideje do tiska. Ante bi bio sretan kad bi mogao zivjeti od svojeg osobnog rada. Jer je svjestan svojih mogucnosti tesko mu pada biti u poziciji onog koji moli za pomoc no svi znamo u kakvoj nam
se situciji trenutacno nalazi Lijepa nasa u kojoj kreativci i uopce mladi ljudi friskih ideja tesko da
nalaze prostora za djelovanje. Usput budi receno, Ante nije od onih koji prima socijalnu ili sl. pomoc od strane drzave nego sva sredstva prezivljavanja su honorari njegove umjetnicke djelatnosti a ti su pak nazalost rijetki. Apeliram na Vasu osobnu hrabrost, javite se Anti Teskeri barem kojom ljubaznom rjecju a kad se pojavite u Zagrebu posjetite ga, rado ce Vam pokazati svoja djela i "prosetati se" s Vama po bregima izvanzagrebackim.

U nastavku rijeci povjesnicarke umjetnosti Visnje Slavice Gabout o
radovima Ante Teskere:

Slikarski svijet Ante Teskere ponajviše je svijet kolaža. Svijet jedne
druge, paralelne realnosti - presložene i analiticki sredene, istodobno disciplinirane i poeticne, aluzivne i
sinteticne, u kojoj se rastapaju granice izmedu stvarnog i imaginarnog, u kojoj je iluzija taktilna i u kojoj fizickiosjet izmice materijalnoj odredljivosti. A iznad svega, svijet je to kreativne igre - igre asocijacija i optickihsenzacija, igre znacenja i komunikacijskih transformacija, prostornih pomaka i sadržajnih odmaka. Jer kolaž je taktilna metamorfozaforme i sadržaja. On ne predstavlja stvarnost, niti je opisuje, ali je od nje sazdan i o njoj opipljivosvjedoci. On je i predmetna cinjenica i iluzija; dijalektika vida i privida; zbilja i njezina predodžba. Njegovi djelici su uzorci istarih i novih struktura, sudionici i starog i  novog vizualnog poretka. U neodoljivim, prividnim prostorima kolažaprotice neodredljiva protocnost vremena i cure, 
poniru i bujaju umnoženi kadrovi jednog novostvorenog svijeta - koji je tu, koji se može opipati, ali koji istodobno izmice iz ruku i iz vidokruga, pretvarajuci se, kao neštofizicko, smisleno i misleno, u nešto drugo - sasvim iluzivno. U novim srodnostima i novim susjedstvima otkrivaju se tako neki drukcijiprostori i nepoznati vidovi poznatoga. Kolaži Ante Teskere isjeccima preuzetima iz poznate stvarnosti - iz
pronadenog materijala (tiskovine) kreiraju novu zbilju i novu predmetnost. Pritom ovaj autor pokazuje poseban interes zageometrijsku gradnju slike, konstruirane pomocu pravilnih, izduženih traka papira u boji, strpljivo lijepljenog pojednom tehnicki discipliniranom i matematicki  promišljenom principu, s naglaskom na facetiranim apstraktnim formama i nacvrstoj strukturi slike. Slike oblikovane  škarama i naslikane papiricima obojenih, šarenih uzoraka, kompozicijskiuravnotežene po zakonitostima klasicnog  “zlatnog reza” i koloristicki usuglašene i dinamizirane aktivnim odnosomapliciranih obojenih ploha. Kolaži su to 
gustog i pikturalno zasicenog linearnog umreženja, neobicnih prostornih rastvaranja - dubokih proboja i beskrajnih širenja, snažnih pulsirajucih ritmova i naglašenih energetskih cvorišta,koji pobuduju osjetilne i mentalne senzacije, aktiviraju kombinatoriku, sugeriraju poetiku i nude slobodnu igruimaginacije, istražujuci na taj nacin neke druge prostore i prekoracujuci iluzionisticki prag imaginarne slikarskeravni.  U avanturu traganja za osobnim likovnim izrazom Ante Teskera tako ulazi sjedne strane cistom i strogom organizacijom 
slike, redom i sabranošcu, analiticnošcu i sinteticnošcu, cvrstom strukturom i jasnom konstrukcijom, dok s druge svoj izraz boji zacudnom sugestivnošcu i ekspresivnošcu, pritajenom culnošcu ijednom oduhovljenošcu unutarnjeg videnja, što njegovu izricaju pridaje komponentu osobnosti, emotivne angažiranostii poetske slobode. Komponentu neophodnu  da bi se ovo slikarstvo smjestilo u individualni kadar i išcitalo kaojedna neponovljiva, kreativna autorska prica i  autorova subjektivna, maštovita slikarska vizija.

LIVING ON AXIS KNIN-KIJEVO-PARAPLEGIA

Honoured Ladies and Gentlemen,
Personelly I would be very pleased if you find time and will to read my
letter from the beginning to the end. Even though I now there is
possibility that by now you have recived a great number of letters with
similar contents and even though I assume that you might feel little
exhausted because of similar longings.In this moment I would like to
introduce you academic painter and graphic artist Ante Teskera and his
unhappy situation, and to politely ask, if you are in any way in position,
to pay attention on this creative individual, hit by a hard destiny, who
will be endlessly happy if you write him just a couple of nice words. Ante
Teskera was born in 1972 in Knin and untill 1980 he lived with his family
in Kijevo, village known to croatian watchfull public by horrible things
who affected the village and croatian population, done by Serbs. In 1980
Ante was injured in car accident and the consequence was permanent
paralysis of lower extremities (paraplegia). He started elementary school
in Kijevo, continued in Kraljevica and finished in Zagreb in Centre for
education and training of children and youth. In this Centre he graduated
secondary administrative school. Next two years he lived in the Centre as
a refugee. In 1995 he manages to register in Academy of Fine Art in Zagreb
and he graduated in February 2001, in the class of professor Miroslav
Sutej. I turn to you for a favour, hoping that you are in the position to
provide help to this young artist in unenviable situation in wich he found
himself. Maybe you are the person who have ideas how to help, either
through advice or concrete transparent action like: to organize
exhibitions of his work, to buy up some of his work, to recommend this
artist to those who knows and (or) could do something like this. As an
artist Ante Teskera works in techniques as oil on canvas, graphic (dry
needle, copper etching + aquatinta, litography) and collages. He knows the
problems of desktop publishing in design work - from idea to print.
Ante would be happy if he could live from his own work. Because he is
aware of his possibilities, it is hard for him to be in the position of
person who ask for help, but we all knows in wich situation is our
beautiful country Croatia at this moment and generally where creative and
young people with fresh ideas hardly find a space for perform. By the way,
Ante is not one of those who receive social or other help provided by
state, all his resources for surviving are author's artistic royalties,
wich are rare.
I appeal on your personel courage, send at least a couple of kind words to
Ante Teskera, and when you come to Zagreb try to visit him, he will be
happy to show you his work and take you 'for a walk' across the hills near
Zagreb.

In the words of art historian Višnja Slavica Gabout:

The painter's world of Ante Teskera is primarily the one of collage. A
world of another, parallel reality -  recomposed and analytically composed, synchronously disciplined and
poetic, allusive and synthetic, where the dividing line between the real and the imaginary is blurred,where illusion is tactile and the physical sensation eludes material identifiability. And most of all, it is
the world of creative play - a play of associations and optical sensations, a play of meanings and
communicative transformations, of spatial shifts and contextual detachment. For, collage is a tactile metamorphosisof form and content. It is neither a representation nor a description of reality, yet it is made of it andtangibly testifies to it. It is both an objective fact and an illusion; the dialectics of perception and
semblance; the reality and its image. His fragments are but patterns of structures old and new, participants in anold as well as new visual order. In the irresistible, imaginary reaches of the collage there flows an
imponderable fluidity of time, and trickle, disappear underground, then heave some multiplied frames of a newlycreated world - which is here to be touched, yet elusive and tending to escape from the horizon, turning, asif something physical, meaningful and reflective, into something quite different - quite illusive indeed. Innew relationships and new neighbourhoods some different spaces are thus unveiled, some unknownaspects of the known. By segments of the known reality - taken from the found print material - the collagesof Ante Teskera create a new reality and a new subjectivity. While doing so, this author shows a particularinterest in drawing a geometric figure made of straight, coloured paper ribbons laboriously glued together on atechnically disciplined and  mathematically well thought-out principle, with emphasis on faceted
abstract forms and a solid structure of the picture. The painting picture shaped by scissors and painted in
ribbons of multicoloured patterns, its composition balanced by following the rules of the classical goldensection, colouristically harmonised and dynamised through an active interplay of appliquéd coloured surfaces.These are the collages of a fine, pictorially saturated linear mesh, of peculiar spatial partitions - of
deep penetrations and infinite expansions, of potent pulsating rhythms and pronounced energy sources, that inducesensory and mental sensations, activate the combinatorial skill, suggest poetics and invite to a free
play of imagination, exploring thus some other spaces and crossing the illusionist threshold of an imaginary
painting plane.Ante Teskera plunges into this adventurous quest for a personal visual
expression with a pure and rigorous arrangement, with order and composure, analysis and synthesis, with a
solid structure and clear design on one hand, whereas on the other he tints his expression with amazing
suggestiveness and expressiveness, with suppressed sensuality and a spirituality of the inner vision that impartsto his expression a touch of individuality, emotional engagement and poetic license. The touch vital for putting hispainting within an individual frame and to reading it as a unique, creative author's tale and his personal,imaginative painter's vision.

The Croatian Ethnic Institute was founded by the Croatian Franciscans in 1975 and incorporated as an educational and scientific corporation in 1977. The purposes of the CEI are:
      • Establish and maintain a central collection on Croats and their descendents in the United States, Canada, and other countries to which Croats have immigrated. The CEI Museum, Archives, Library, and Research Center all meet this purpose.
         
      • Collect and preserve books, periodicals and magazines, manuscripts and artifacts relating to the heritage of some 2.5 million people of Croatian descent in North America.
         
      • Develop, produce, and promote materials useful for the study of the Croatian language and heritage.
         
      • Encourage and conduct research on the sociological, demographic, religious, and political aspects of Croatian and other migrations and their impact on the way of life in the countries to which they have migrated.

 Archives

The Archives of the Croatian Ethnic Institute are maintained in the central office, located at 4851 S. Drexel Blvd. They have become the largest repository of personal papers, manuscripts, and correspondence of many noteworthy personalities of Croatian descent in the U.S. and Canada.

The Archives also contain collections of records of Croatian parishes in the US and Canada, census and annual reports; documents and records of cultural, fraternal, and political organizations, sports clubs, musical societies (e.g. Tamburitza), travel agencies and businesses.

This is an excellent resource for individuals interested in Croatian immigration patterns, community development, cultural and family history, and Croatian networks within and outside of North America. Although staff is limited at the Institute, CEI welcomes specialists, undergraduate and graduate students, and scholars to use these primary resources in their research.

  Library

The CEI Library has a collection of over 12,000 volumes, mostly dealing with Croatian culture, history, language, fine arts and literature and including rare Croatian books from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Special Section of the Library is comprised of books and other publications written or published by Croats in Diaspora in the United States, Canada, and other countries.

The Serial Portion of the Library is made up of several hundred titles. CEI has identified and/or completed over 250 different Croatian newspapers, magazines, journals, and newsletters published in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere.

   Museum

The Museum holds artistic and historical items related to the Croatian heritage: folklore, musical instruments, artifacts, numismatics, and philately. Some of the items are on permanent exhibit.
 

Community and Educational Services

CEI provides the following services to individuals and community organizations interested in programs and activities relating to ethnic heritage:
  • Classified Exhibits (history, publications, folklore, literature, arts, immigration
  • Educational lectures
  • Helps scholars to prepare papers, providing them with adequate sources and instructions
  • Assists curriculum specialists to identify issues and problems for investigation, by locating or providing written and other resources.
