» Croatia won gold in quadruple sculls at 2013 World Championship in Korea ahead of Germany and GB

David Šain, Martin Sinković, Damir Martin (on the photo) and Valent Sinković representing Croatia are continuing with amazing results in quadruple sculls rowing. At the 2013 World Championship held in Korea, Croatia won the first place, Germany the second (last year's Olympic champions in London, Croatia was  second then), and Great Britain the third. Croatia won the title of world champions for the second time (2011 and 2013), and is at the same time the tripple world cup champion (2010, 2011, 2-013), which is an unbeleivable achievement besides such countries like Germany, Great Britain, Rusia, USA, etc..

Award-winning Russian bass, Alexei Tanovitski, is one of the brightest stars of his generation. He has impressed audiences the world over and won wide-spread critical acclaim for his performances in the most prominent theaters and concert halls. He was recently appointed as an ambassador to promote the UNESCO World-Heritage-Listed city of Trogir on Croatia's Adriatic Coast. He lives with his wife Ivana in Croatia's capital Zagreb. Mr. Tanovitski is opening the Metropolitan Opera season 2003-2014 on September 23.

We are glad to present to the readers of the CROWN the two recently published CD's by Radoslav Lorković, Croatian-American pianist, accordion player, singer and composer. Drawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest, most basic blues, country and soul, Radoslav Lorković has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. His grand-mother, Melita Lorković, was a famous Croatian classical pianist.

  Sandra Perković, young Croatian athlete, is the best discus thrower among women in the world today. Olympic champion in 2012, double European champion (2010 in Barcelona and in 2012 in Helsinki), winner of many international competitions during the past several years, in 2013 she became the world champion during the World Athletics Competition held in Moscow. She is also the winner of the 2013 Diamond League. Sandra is one of the greatest sportswomen in the history of Croatian sport, next to famous Janica Kostelić (skiing superstar) and Blanka Vlašić (high-jumping superstar).

According to Professor Slobodan Lang, distinguished Croatian peace activist, "STORM was humanitarian operation which prevented genocide." The old Croatian mediaeval royal town of Knin was liberated in just a few days after five years of occupation. Congratulations on the occasion of Victory Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders on 5th August to citizens of Croatia and all Croatians in the world. It has been produced on the initiative of the Public Diplomacy Service of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, with the support of the Institute of Lexicography in Zagreb. The project has been initiated by Mr. Zvonimir Frka Petešić, head of the Public Diplomacy Service.

Azithromycin or Sumamed is one of the world's best-selling antibiotics, used to treat or prevent certain bacterial infections, most often those causing middle ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, typhoid, bronchitis and sinusitis. It has been discovered Croatia's capital Zagreb in 1980, by a team of researchers at the Croatian pharmaceutical company Pliva: Gabrijela Kobrehel, Gorjana Radobolja-Lazarevski, and Zrinka Tamburašev, led by Slobodan Đokić. They are recipients of the 2000 award Heroes of Chemistry in the USA. The first roots of Pliva go to 1921. Croatian Nobel Prize winner Vladimir Prelog (1975 for chemistry) worked in a company preceding Pliva in 1935. The earnings are estimated to 1.5 billon US$ per year! Croatia is one of only nine countries in the world with its own antibiotic product.

Professor Igor Štagljar, Croatian Canadian scientist working at the Faculty of Medicine’s Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research at the University of Toronto, and his team developed the first roadmap for ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins. These proteins are crucial components of every cell, and are also involved in tumor resistance. “Our discovery shows how ABC transporter proteins effect cancer and other diseases, and this knowledge can help us develop better, more targeted drugs. This is truly momentous,” said Štagljar.

Croatian documentary From Grain to Painting by Branko Ištvančić, is the recipient of the Gold Camera award for the best documentary and has been nominated for a Best of Festival award for Documentary productions in 2013 film competition of US International Film & Video Festival in Los Angeles. Distinguished Croatian filmmaker Branko Ištvančić, the director of live-action (The Ghost in the Swamp, 2006) and award-winning documentary films (The Cormorant Scarecrow, 1998), born in Subotica, where a large part of the film takes place, devoted a lot of attention to the poetic atmosphere and visuals.
