No, sto je moja poanta ?

» (E) Mira Seljuga of Seattle, native of Croatia, on NPR
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 04/5/2002 | Miscellaneous | Unrated

America's National Public Radio is doing a series on Roosevelt High
School in Seattle. Yesterday, they aired episode no. 5 which focused on
the the school's lunchroom, whose head chef is Mira Segula of Croatia.
Set forth below is an abridged transcript. The story itself (which I
had heard) interviewed her for a bit and contained more information
about her. Those wishing to listen to the story can do so at
www.npr.org.

Episode 5: Turkey Tetrazzini Day

April 4, 2002 -- The recipe for the famed turkey tetrazzini at Roosevelt
High School in Seattle, Wash., hasn't changed in decades. It's buttery,
cheesy, stick-to-your-ribs stuff, served up with pride by the "lunch
ladies."

But most everything else in the cafeteria is facing a profound
transition. The forces of marketing, consolidation and convenience are
transforming the school lunchroom. As part of his yearlong series on the
students, teachers and staff at Seattle's largest high school, NPR's
Robert Smith reports that the era of the lunch lady may quickly be
coming to an end.

The Roosevelt High School kitchen doesn't serve just its own students
any more. Since fewer schools have their own kitchens, the kitchen crew
cooks for 38 other lunchrooms. Doing the math, kitchen manager Maria
Larsen figures they will have to put out about 4,500 servings of turkey
tetrazzini by Thursday.

"With high school kids, they love it," she tells Smith. "The little
kids? Eh. But the teachers like it a lot. This is comfort food, so it
goes over pretty big."

The work starts on Monday, when the lunch ladies start thawing 874
pounds of turkey. The decision wasn't entirely up to Larsen and her crew
-- after Thanksgiving and Christmas, the U.S. government buys up tons of
surplus turkey, destined for the nation's prisons and school lunchrooms.
So springtime at Roosevelt means turkey sausage, turkey ham, turkey
wraps, turkey corn dogs... and this week, turkey and noodles.

On Tuesday, head chef Mira Segulja, a petite, 61-year-old native of
Croatia, hefts big boxes of turkey meat and shredded cheese with arms of
steel. She's nearly dwarfed by the industrial-sized cooking vats -- vats
the size of hot tubs, stirred by wooden spoons that could paddle a
canoe. She rarely needs to look at the recipe.

The turkey-and-pasta mix is cooled overnight, and on Wednesday
individual servings are portioned into small foil pans, to be sent to
other Seattle public schools. And then it's Thursday -- turkey
tetrazzini day. Early that morning a truck hauls away thousands of
packets to the other schools. At Roosevelt's cafeteria, students get one
big scoop apiece. Add a handful of veggies to the tray, some milk and a
big tater tot, and the meal is complete. The cost: $1.75.

At the end of lunch, Assistant Principal Mike Musselwhite walks around
the lunchroom with a big garbage can, assessing the reaction. "It
actually seems like a successful lunch period -- there's not much
tetrazzini in the trash," he announces to the women in the kitchen.

But there's no time for celebration. Tomorrow, they're serving soft
tacos. And the longer view is uncertain -- the Seattle School District
is planning on consolidating the food distribution in one central
kitchen.

By Nenad N. Bach | Published 04/5/2002 | Humor And Wisdom | Unrated

THE SENILITY PRAYER

God grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones that I do,
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Now that I'm older (but refuse to grow up)
here's what I've discovered....

ONE - I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

TWO - My wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran.

THREE - I finally got my head together, now my body is falling apart.

FOUR - Funny, I don't remember being absent minded.

FIVE - All reports are in, life is now officially unfair.

SIX - If all is not lost, where is it?

SEVEN - It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.

EIGHT - Some days you are the dog, some days you're the hydrant.

NINE - I wish the buck stopped here, I sure could use a few.

TEN - Kids in the back seat cause accidents.

ELEVEN - Accidents in the back seat cause kids.

TWELVE - It's hard to make a come back when
you haven't been anywhere.

THIRTEEN - The only time the world beats a path to your door
is when you're in the bathroom.

FOURTEEN - If God wanted me to touch my toes,
he would have put them on my knees.

FIFTEEN - When I'm finally holding all the cards,
why does everyone decide to play chess?

SIXTEEN - It's not hard to meet expenses...they're everywhere.

SEVENTEEN - The only difference between a rut and
a grave is the depth.

EIGHTEEN - These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter...
I go somewhere to get something and then wonder what I'm here after.

NINETEEN - I AM UNABLE TO REMEMBER IF I HAVE MAILED THIS TO YOU BEFORE OR NOT

All great things start from self-respect. If self-respect is not there,
nothing can help you. Having self-respect means respecting one's past, for
the past / memory is everything people are and have (been).
Future is not, and when it IS, it is the past, like the now which is
perceptible but as the past.

Best or brightest times to view the planets in 2002

MERCURY
As an evening star, it appears in the western sky, setting about an hour after the Sun. As a morning star, it appears in the eastern sky, rising about an hour before the Sun. There must be a clear, unobstructed horizon on these occasions. Mercury usually appears as a bright “star” with a yellowish or ochre hue. Evenings from January 1 to January 18; mornings from February 4 to March 20; evenings from April 21 to May 14; mornings from June 8 to July 6; evenings from August 5 to September 19; mornings from October 7 to October 19; evenings from December 12 to December 31. Mercury will be brightest and easiest to spot in the evening sky between April 21 and May 14, and brightest and easiest to spot in the morning sky between October 7 and October 19.

VENUS
Always brilliant and shining with a steady, silvery light. Evenings in the western sky at dusk from March 17 to October 20; mornings in the eastern sky at dawn from November 10 to December 31. Venus will attain its greatest brilliancy in the evening sky on September 25 and again in the morning sky on December 6.

MARS
hining like a “star” with a yellowish-orange hue, it can vary considerably in brightness. Evenings from January 1 to June 22; mornings from September 25 to December 31. This is an “off ” year for Mars, as it never becomes very bright or conspicuous. It will be at aphelion on September 20, when it will be 154.9 million miles from the Sun and an even more distant 244 million miles from the Earth. Despite this rather gloomy outlook, one should keep in mind that next year will bring us an exceptional apparition of Mars; in fact, in late August 2003, the planet will approach Earth closer than at any time since the beginning of the Christian Era.

JUPITER
Quite brilliant with a silver-white luster. Evenings from January 1 to June 29; mornings from August 9 to December 31. Brightest in 2002 during the first half of January. It is at opposition to the Sun on New Year’s Day.

SATURN
Shines like a yellowish-white “star” of moderate brightness. The famous rings are only visible with a telescope. Evenings from January 1 to May 21; mornings from June 27 to December 16; evenings again from December 17 to December 31. Brightest in 2002 during December, as it is at opposition on December 17. The Moon “crosses paths” with Saturn in February, resulting in the Moon passing in front of Saturn (called an “occultation”). This “Saturn eclipse” is scheduled for February 20, favors all of North America, and occurs during the early evening hours. Also during 2002, the south face of the rings are tilted to near their maximum angle of 28ş, making them a very striking spectacle, even in a low-power telescope.

URANUS
Evenings from January 1 to January 29; mornings from March 1 to August 19; evenings again from August 20 to December 31.

NEPTUNE
Evenings from January 1 to January 12; mornings from February 13 to August 1; evenings again from August 2 to December 31.

PLUTO
Will not be visible in 2002.

» (E) Naked Eye Planets to Align in Sky around April 20, 2002
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 04/5/2002 | Events | Unrated

Sight Might Not Be Seen Again for Century

By Deborah Zabarenko
Reuters

WASHINGTON (April 2) - The five so-called naked eye planets -- Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn -- will appear to clump together later this month in a sight that might not be seen again for a century.

But don't call this a planetary alignment. And even though this is fairly rare, there is nothing for earthlings to worry about, astronomer Geoff Chester of the U.S. Naval Observatory said on Tuesday.

The grouping of the five will begin to be visible with unaided eyes around April 20, with the planets clustered closest by around May 4, Chester said by telephone.

"It is an opportunity to see all five of the naked eye planets in the same part of the sky at the same time and that does not happen very often," Chester said.

It could be 50 or 100 years before this happens again, he said.

The display should be easy to see in most parts of the inhabited world, weather permitting, though those at extreme northern and southern latitudes may need binoculars or a small telescope, and Mercury could still be hard to spot, he said.

A similar grouping of the same five planets, plus the moon, occurred on May 5, 2000, accompanied by dire predictions of extraordinary tides and other cataclysms. Earth survived.

However, that cluster occurred on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth, and the Sun's light was so bright the planets could not be seen from Earth.

This time, most humans should have a good view, Chester said.

What they should be able to see will be Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn all grouped within the span of 10 degrees of the sky, or about the width of a fist held at arm's length.

Jupiter will be a bit higher in the sky, about three fist-widths away, but still quite close.

The cluster will start to dissipate around May 12, Chester said, when Mercury will dip closer to the horizon and become less visible.

This grouping is only the planets people can see without help, and does not count as an alignment, according to Chester, though others have used that term.

Chester considers a true alignment to be when all the planets are on the same side of the sun, and grouped within about 90 degrees -- nine fist-widths -- of each other, or closer. This occurs once in several hundred years.

The closest known planetary alignment in the last two millennia occurred on April 11, 1128, before most planets were identified as such, including Earth, according to Chester.

Two thousand fans greet Oscar-award winner Danis Tanovic in downtown Sarajevo
Fri Apr 5, 2002

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina - Some 2,000 people gathered Friday on Sarajevo's main downtown square to cheer Danis Tanovic, the writer-director who won Biosnia's first Academy Award.

"I'm happy and calm because I came back home. I simply came back home to my parents, my friends and my people," Tanovic said, taking his Oscar out of his backpack and holding it up for the crowd to see.

Tanovic, 33, whose film, "No Man's Land," won this year's Oscar for best foreign-language film, arrived in his hometown to accept on Saturday the city's annual "April 6" award — given to citizens who make distinguished contributions to society. The "April 6" award is in honor of the city's liberation from Nazi Germany on that day in 1945.

"No Man's Land," a satire of the 1992-95 Bosnian war that devastated the country, won a total of 42 film awards, including a Golden Palm award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites), before being nominated for the Academy of Motion Picture's Oscar.

The violent war satire is about enemy soldiers — one Bosnian and one Serb — trapped together in a battlefield trench. It captures the absurdity of the war, the cruelty of ethnic hatred and the ineffectiveness of United Nations (news - web sites) forces during the conflict.

The dlrs 1 million budget film was shot on location in neighboring Slovenia, as filming in postwar Bosnia proved too risky. The film's lead roles were played by Branko Djuric, a native Sarajevan, and Rene Bitorajac, who was born in Zagreb, Croatia.

Tanovic left Bosnia in 1994 and now lives in Paris.
