(E) Two Appeals
|
CHARITY In the April issue of the Matica magazine were two appeals to which the CROWN readers might wish to respond:
The first is from the Zagreb Rebro hospital, the oncology and radiotherapy clinic, which is in desperate need to have some repairs made to the building, as some ceilings are peeling and in danger of crumbling and the rest of the interior is also in poor shape. Sister Alberta is asking for our help for this 53-bed clinic that provides treatment annually for over 3000 hospitalized patients.
You can send a check to: Zagrebacka Banka d.d. SVIFT ZABA HR 2X, 7026-VAL-0941778 (za Onkologiju Rebro) or DOBROTVORNA UDRUGA "ADOR" 10000 Zagreb, Kanalski Put bb Croatia tel/fax 2404-864
The second appeal is from the society "PAKS" consisting mostly of marine biologists, geologists and divers/researchers, interested in pursuing the research and preservation of the Adriatic Sea, which has fallen mostly on deaf ears in the Ministries where such interest and initiative should be present.
This society has dedicated itself to document all the unusual aquatic flora and fauna as well as rock and cave formations indigenous to the Adriatic. They have filmed the last four years a documentary film "Secrets of the Adriatic" (Tajne Jadrana") which required much know-how for underwater filming as well as financial means. They have received some aid from UNESCO and the Ministry of Science and Technology as well as a few private companies, but it is not sufficient for the program they are trying to achieve. The purpose of the filming is to produce and distribute a permanent promotional, popular science documentary, such as are shown on Public TV and the Discovery Channel , which would acquaint the world with the beauties of the Croatian Adriatic Sea - the cleanest of the Mediterranean seas. The documentary would undoubtedly be the best promotion for Croatia as a Mediterranean country and move it away from the "Balkans"!

Croatian Eagles Soccer Club win Wisconsin State Major Division Championship
The long and colorful history of the Croatian Eagles soccer club finally culminated in achampionship as the Eagles defeated archrivals the United Serbians 4-2 in the final of the Wisconsin Soccer Association Major Division on Sunday, July 14, 2002 at Croatian Park in Franklin, Wisconsin. This is the first official championship since 1963 for the Eagles, a team founded in 1922 and theoldest soccer club in existence in North America. The Croats, who have reached the finals severaltimes in the interim, finally grabbed the championship trophy on their home field in front of 1500spectators.
American and Croatian flags flew side by side in a blue, cloudless sky as the teams took to the field at 4 p.m. The Eagles never trailed but went ahead for good breaking a 2-2 tie in the 50th minute. The Eagles dominated play the entire game, although the Serbs played a hard game and never gave up. With several good chances, the Croats could have scored another two or three goals.Hundreds of fans cheered after the final whistle while several hundred United Serbians fans left thepark almost immediately.
The team is comprised of over 1/2 second and third generation Croatian Americans and is coached by Pero Markovic, a Croatian immigrant. The Wisconsin Soccer Association has honored many CroatianEagles as inductees to the Wisconsin Soccer Hall of Fame. Some of the more recent inductees includethe late Toni Franjic, Ivica Jugovic, Viktor Zorc, Boris Kuzmanovic, Stjepan Bartolic and ZdravkoNovak. One of the more well known inductees is Bob Gansler, former U.S. National team coach.

History of the Croatian Eagles Soccer Club

1960 Wisconsin state runners-up Established on March 1, 1922, the Croatian Eagles Soccer Club was founded with the desire to give Croatian immigrants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a place to foster and perpetuate their Croatian heritage. The founding president of the club was Reverend Charles Jesih. He provided Croatian immigrants the opportunity to share the love of soccer and pride of their heritage. Also known as "Hrvatski Orlovi", Croatian for "Croatian Eagles", the Eagles are members of the Wisconsin Soccer Association, Croatian National Soccer Federation of the U.S. & Canada, Croatian American Congress and Croatian World Congress.
Over the years the Eagles have made significant contributions to soccer in the Milwaukee area as well as throughout the USA. In 1998 the Eagles were awarded the Mike Kabanica Award by the Wisconsin Soccer Association for the contributions made to soccer in Wisconsin over the years. The Eagles have provided opportunities for building soccer skills, sportsmanship and pride for players of all ethnic and racial backgrounds. As one of the oldest soccer clubs in the United States and the oldest Croatian soccer club in the world outside of Croatia, the Eagles have been a pioneer of youth and adult soccer. Teams have ranged from all age levels including "old timers" and girls' teams. The Eagles have seen much success over the years at all levels.
Until 1956, the Eagles played on various city fields that were administered by the Milwaukee Public Schools. In 1956 a new home was established called Croatian Park located in Franklin, Wisconsin, owned by the Federation of Croatian Societies. Croatian Park has a picnic area that hosts the annual "Croatian Days" festival held every July, which attracts people from all over the Midwest. The park has five regulation size soccer fields, two youth fields and a clubhouse that house the offices, locker room and meeting spaces of the Croatian Eagles.
Hard work and love for the game of soccer is what has kept the Eagles alive. With this determination the Eagles look forward to many more years of existence and success for future generations to enjoy.

(E) WorldPress Review - Letter to the editor
|
WorldPress Review article onCroatia I doubt Zagreb-based journalists provide reports about events inSerbia. The author of the rather disengenuous WorldPress Review article on Croatia, Ms. Katarina Subasic, is the Belgrade Correspondent for Agence Free Press. A fellow of the US-based Freedom Forum media support institute,Ms. Subasic unfortunately appears to be unable or unwilling to avoid ethnically opinionated writing. It is also not fair on the part of WPR to have a reporter from a formerly aggresive neighbor to treat this very sensitive ethnic relations issue in Croatia. I doubt Zagreb-based journalists provide reports about events in Serbia.
In a previous article Subasic tried to persuade the outside world that the fall of Milosevic saw a complete turnaround of the Serbian media from one of state mouthpiece to one of full independence. This is of course nonsensee nor does that kind of advocacy reporting contribute to genuine media democratic reform in Serbia. It does hoever evince that tiresome and recognizeable Serbian habit of trying to deny Serbian guilt for the horrors of the Balkan wars by falsely accusing others of doing the same. A pitty as this only retards the necessary process of reconciliation. But before reconciliation must come admission and contrition. Subasic had an opportunity to help us move towards that goal but prove unable to move beyond her own ethnic bias. Max Primorac

(E) Croatia:New Math - Letter to the Editor by Hilda
|
Lettersto theEditors Ms. Alice Chasan Editor Worldpress Review
Dear Editor:
Reading "Croatia: New Math" one has to wonder if the misinformation in Katarina Subasic's article is deliberate or lacking facts because of a poorly informed writer. The article describes the reaction of the Croatian government and different people regarding the recent population census report, which shows a reduction of the Serb population since the prewar census of 1990 from 11.5% to the current 4.5%. (the article incorrectly states the prewar number as 12.6%).
In a reference to the 1995 liberation of Croatia's so-called Krajina territory, that was occupied by rebel Serbs for four years - and which they plundered and ethnically cleansed of some 200,000 Croatians - the author uses the word "alleged" regarding the Serb documents seized by Croatia's forces, which clearly show orders by the Serb leadership for the evacuation of the whole Serb population from the territory, ahead of the arrival of the Croatian army. Some 150,000 did just that, thus it obviously did not constitute any ethnic cleansing on Croatia's part, which some like to imply. There was nothing "alleged" about these documents, they very much exist, besides, there was also an interview in August 1995 with the Croatian Serbs' leaders Martic and the Yugoslav general Mrksic in Belgrade's media, acknowledging these facts.
As for the quote from Croatia's newspaper Novi List, it is not surprising to still find elements in Croatia who mourn the demise of Yugoslavia and would write anything that could blame Croatia.
Finally, the diminished number of Serbs in Croatia is a natural result of Serbs who before the war served in Yugoslav military and administrative positions in Croatia and returned to Serbia after losing the war - and that was a substantial number, as previously Serbs deliberately spread themselves all across Croatia. These people left alive and well, in contrast to the 12,000 Croatians killed by the Serbs. Perhaps when Serbs finally apologize for all the death and destruction they caused in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, they might find Croatians more forgiving - but not forgetting very soon.
Sincerely,

Lettersto theEditors July 18, 2002
Ms. Alice Chasan Editor World Press Review
Dear Ms. Chasan:
Documentation that included evacuation orders by Serbian General Mrksic and Republika Srpska leader Martic regarding Serbians leaving the Krajina before the Croatian offensive is widely available and easily confirmed through the United Nations and other international organizations. A Serbian newspaper also warned of the coming Croatian offensive. Finally, there is well-documented videographic and photographic evidence of Serbians leaving the Krajina with their belongings in trucks and vans in a very orderly fashion. They were not forced out of their homes by gunpoint or taken to concentration camps.
If the Serbians were as innocent as they claim to be of ethnically cleansing anyone anywhere, then they would still be living comfortably and without any fear whatsoever in Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Kosovo. Of course, that would also mean that the entire world has been hallucinating from 1991 until the present. It seems that Katarina Subasic is either not a very literate reporter or she more likely is using her position and your organization as a venue for her own agenda. You figure it out.
Sincerely,

(H) Dr.Sc. Bozidar Jerkovic
dr. sc.Božidar JerkovićRAZGOVOR SA dr. sc. Božidarom JERKOVIĆEM, DOKTOROMMOLEKULARNE BIOFIZIKE NA ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY U NEW YORKU I DOBITNIKOM PRESTIŽNENAGRADE PETERSON FELLOWSHIP ZA NAJBOLJI DOKTORAT
Stvaramo antibiotik BUDUĆNOSTI!Riječ je o institutu u kojemu rade uistinu vrhunski stručnjaci spodručja biokemije i biofizike, među kojima je u ovom trenutku sedamnobelovaca. A ja bihrado napravio nešto, razmišlja mladi znanstvenik. Fotografije Dalmacije sumilovale dušu i oči punile ljepotom, a fotografije New Yorka postavljajubrojna pitanja pred promatrača. Marijana KASALO Snimio Duje KLARIĆhttp://www.slobodnadalmacija.hr/20020707/zdravlje01.asp Op-ed Moje osobno i kratko iskustvo. ENRON VENTURE CAPITALISM You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. The public buys your bull.

Loversand MadmenbyJulienne Eden Busic 60new pages! Aboutthe book: Loversand Madmen is dominated by two central themes: politics and love. JulienneBusic’s memoirs take the reader through the events which shaped her life withCroatian dissident husband, Zvonko – assassination attempts, threats from theYugoslav secret police, flights from country to country, enforced poverty anddeprivation – and characterize the love which led to the greatest sacrifice ofall: a sentence of life in prisonfor the political hijacking of a TWA jet. Lessthan twenty years after their desperate act, Yugoslavia broke apart in a spasmof war and Croatia is now an independent state. The message contained in the leaflets thrown during thehijacking served as a prophesy of this disintegration and the vicious Serbianaggression, first in Croatia and Bosnia, and most recently in Albanian poplatedKosovo. Julienne Busic served thirteen years inprison and was released on parole in 1989. Zvonko Busic is still incarcerated, almost 26 years later, in a maximum security federal prison in Leavenworth,Kansas. International Choral Festival and the Sixth World Symposium on Choral Music Never before held in the United States, the Symposium and International Choral Festival will bring together over 3,000 prominent choral specialists, composers, scholars and choirs from around the globe to study, perform and share in the latest industry developments. The International Choral Festival is a new component of the Symposium, brought to life through the 2002 organizing committee as they seek to expand the event's traditional role of serving delegates to also reach out to the public. "We knew that the Symposium presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring the voices of the world directly to the people of Minnesota," said Philip Brunelle, president of the Symposium's board of directors and director of VocalEssence (founded as the Plymouth Music Series). "The Twin Cities community has rallied to make the International Choral Festival a reality with spectacular results. The festival boasts a stellar line-up of choirs you won't find anywhere else in the world." The Sixth World Symposium on Choral Music is presented by Marshall Field's Project Imagine(SM) and Target, with support from the Target Foundation. Every time guests shop at Marshall Field's and Target, they're making a difference by supporting social service and arts organizations that enrich our lives. Five percent of every purchase made at Marshall Field's and Target contributes to the more than two million dollars a week that Target Corporation gives back to the communities in which it does business. Symposium sponsors include Minnesota Public Radio, 3M, Pepper of Minneapolis, Ecolab, City of Minneapolis, McKnight Foundation, Medtronic, Northwest Airlines, NEA, Star Tribune, Wenger and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The Symposium is a triennial global event of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) and is hosted by the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA of MN). IFCM, celebrating its 20th anniversary, was founded in 1982 by seven prominent international choral organizations representing five continents. Its mission is to facilitate communication and exchange between choral musicians throughout the world. Tickets for the Rilling, I Hear America Singing and Minnesota Sings Farewell concerts are available at Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, 612-371-5656 or 1-800-292-4141 or at www.minnesotaorchestra.org .
