How Do I Love Thee?

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breath and Height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the Ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints - I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!  And if God choose,
I shall love thee better after death.

Dirty Thousand and Two

http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/7699.html

How to win a war where the enemy refuses to play by the rules? Find a
soldier who does not give a damn about them either.

The US is training 1000 Serb elite paramilitary troops, who were last
time engaged in ethnic cleansing operations in Kosovo in 1999, for
anti-terrorist duties in Afghanistan.
While the use of ostensibly
anti-Muslim fighters in a Muslim country could be seen as a
provocation, Afghans are not behaving friendly to any foreign
soldiers.

Interestingly, to avoid compunctions about ICC, thousand Serbs are
not going to be under NATO command in Kabul, but directly under the
US command.

A 25 year old Swedish man of Serbian birth has admitted the murder of
Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lind in a Stockhom department store in
2003. ZDF Television, quoting Swedish media, reported in its Nacht
Magazin that Mihajl Mihajlovic held a grudge against the minister
following her outspoken support for NATO's actions against Serbia in
1999. Mihajlovic's lawyer claims his client is mentally disturbed.

This is an important reminder that terrorism and despair are not just
a province of Arab Muslim extremists. And that there always is some
socio-political background to any act of political violence.

Zivota Konstantinovic, former Serbian soldier who admittedly
participated in ethnic cleansing of Croatians, is arrested in Miami and
awaiting deportation. Not clear where is he going to be deported to,
though. Shouldn't he face charges for his alleged involvement in
torture and related offenses?

Reply from Neumann

Thank you for your message. I will look at the links and material you suggest.
However I note, for now, that Phillip Cohen's book has indeed been accused of
bias by non-Serb, non-ideological sources.

No one denies the existence of Serbian fascism; Tito fought it. And I both
recognize and welcome the considerable steps Croatia has taken to get beyond the
Ustashe past. My criticisms were of certain Croatian nationalists, not of
Croatians generally.

Michael Neumann

Judy Feldworth wrote:

Dear Mr. Neumann:

See http://mirror.veus.hr/myth/index.html  for general historical
information on WWII and Croatia. No, McAdams is not a Croatian
apologist. He is not Croatian or related to Croatians. He is an
Eastern European history professor who searches for the truth.

Tudjman was a Partisan general in WWII, not a fascist. Check your history.

For further enlightenment, you might read Dr. Philip Cohen's book
Serbia's Secret War. It is an unbiased, extremely well-documented
account of the fascist puppet government activities by General Nedic in
Serbia during WWII, documenting Serbia's long-existing anti-Semitism and

the concentration camps in Serbia during the war. No one ever hears
this history because it has been buried by Serbian propagandists.

My first cousin and aunt were killed in Croatia by the Ustashe. No
intelligent Croatian forgives the activities of the puppet government in

Croatia during WWII; however, they must also take it into perspective.
The atrocities that took place in Croatia were horrible and unjustified
but no different than those that took place in all of the Nazi-occupied
countries with Nazi puppet governments - a la Vichy France, the Benelux
countries, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and the others. Only a small
percentage of the population was involved with the Ustashe under Pavelic

and those poor people were duped because they were promised a FREE,
INDEPENDENT Croatia, finding themselves instead victims of an occupied
fascist state. The price they paid was great for this so-called
promise. The greater majority of the people were involved with the
Partisans who were actively antifascist. Check your knowledge of
history - yet again.

And stop absorbing that anti-Croatian crap written by Chris Hodges in
the NY Times. His bias was so palpable anyone with a brain would be
able to discern that.

I agree with Hilda - there are just some people who cannot be convinced.  Perhaps Cohen's book is biased - but it is factually based.  The lies propagated about Croatia during WWII by the Communists and Greater Serbians were not only biased but not factually based either.

As a good example, there is a constant mantra that I am sure all of you have seen where the NDH's stated policy was to covert 1/3, deport 1/3 and exterminate 1/3 of the Serbs in its territory.  This was supposedly stated by Mile Budak, an NDH official.  I have been told by professional historians that they have been unable to locate the source of this statement - it is completely made up!

This does not mean that the Ustashe did not do bad things - it just shows what steps people took to make their crimes appear even greater than they were.

Back to Neumann for a moment - it seems to me that people like that will find anything that contradicts their established viewpoint to be a "biased" opinion.  As an example, even if McAdams is a Croat, why is that relevant?  Does that mean if a Jewish historian/reporter writes about the Palestinians or the Holocaust that they are also automatically "biased?"  What about German historians writing about the same thing?

It' not easy to be a Doctor

During a patient's two week follow-up appointment with his cardiologist, he informed me, his doctor,
that he was having trouble with one of his medications. "Which one?" I asked. "The patch. The nurse told me to put on a new one every six hours and now I'm running out of places to put it!" I had him quickly undress and discovered what I hoped I wouldn't see. Yes, the man had over fifty patches on his body! Since this incident, the instructions now include removal of the old patch before applying a new one.

Dr. Rebecca St. Clair, Norfolk, VA

I was performing a complete physical, including the visual acuity test. I placed the patient twenty feet
from the chart and began, "Cover your right eye with your hand." He read the 20/20 line perfectly. "Left." Again, a flawless read. "Now both," I requested. There was silence. He couldn't even read the large letter on the top line. I turned and discovered that he had done exactly what I had asked; he was standing there with both his eyes covered. I was laughing too hard to finish the exam.

Dr. Matthew Theodropolous, Worcester, MA

A man comes into the ER and yells, "My wife's going to have her baby in the cab!" I grabbed my stuff,
rushed out to the cab, lifted the lady's dress, and began to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed
that there were several cabs, and I was in the wrong one.

Dr. Mark MacDonald, San Antonio, TX

At the beginning of my shift I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly deaf female patient's
anterior chest wall. "Big breaths," I instructed. "Yes, they used to be," remorsefully replied the
patient.

Dr. Richard Byrnes, Seattle, WA

One day I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her husband had died of a massive
myocardial infarct. Not more than five minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that
he had died of a "massive internal fart."

Revansizam ili pitanje pravednosti ?

GLAS KONCILA, 11.1.2004.
ZAPAZANJA

Djurdjica Lieb

Zasto sutnja o ponizenim i izbacenim novinarima?
A znate li mozda broj otpustenih radnika?
Jugoslavenski orijentirani novinari - dobro zbrinuti
A Hrvatska ponovno tone u hrvatsku sutnju.

Croatian Pages on Queens Library's WorldLinQ Website

The Queens Borough Public Library is the busiest library system in the USA, and the Croatian community is being recognized by them once again through this exciting opportunity.

I just accepted their invitation to transform the Croatian pages of their innovative multilingual Web-based information system, WorldLinQ, into a part of their new dynamic website. The project will start in January, and should be completed by March, 2004. This means so much to me, that I refused to be paid for my work, and asked them to channel that money into their New Americans Program instead, and fund additional Croatian events, or purchase new Croatian books and materials.

In the meantime, you can visit the Queens Library on the web atwww.queenslibrary.org , go to "WorldLinQ", and than choose "Croatian". Let me know what you think, and what would you like to find there in the future. Write to me atcrnkovic@netzero.net , or call me at 718-626-6805. Thanks!

Freedom from Despair, is coming along well.

Dear Friends,

My documentary film, Freedom from Despair, is coming along well. After a successful filming in California, Chicago and Croatia, the film is now in post-production. In December, a preview of the film was aired on PBS (KOCE) in Southern California to 3 million viewers. Look out for my interview in the January 19th issue of Arena Magazine. In the spring, the film will be screened in the Amnesty International Film Festival.

After competing with 800 students, I was recently awarded the Marion Knott Scholarship from the Chapman University School of Film. This means that I will get to spend the next few months working one on one with filmmaker David S. Ward during post-production on my film. His credits include “Sleepless in Seattle,” “The Sting” for which he received an academy award, “Jumanji 2,” all the “Major League” movies, “Canery Row,” and “The Best Man.” I believe that time with Mr. Ward will afford me the opportunity to make the film the best that it can be.

I would like to extend a very special thank you to Tom Rinear, for his recent monetary donation to the film! This project is something that will promote Croatia in a positive light and it is something that Croatians can benefit from. Below I have included the names of people who I wish to recognize for understanding importance of this. Since it is an independent student film, I am relying on the generous donations from my family and other Croatians who believe in the project. The budget is still growing and donations are still needed to complete the film. If you can afford to offer any help, please contact me atcrofilm2003@yahoo.com .

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year,
Brenda Brkusic
