The Croatian American Bar Association will be holding a law student essay competition open to all currently enrolled law students worldwide and  must be an original, unpublished work.  There is a cash prize, and winners will be announced in Novermber 2008. The submission deadline is October 31, 2008.

Andrija Štampar (1888-1958), Croatian scientist and professor at the University of Zagreb, is the father of the World Health Organization, founded 60 years ago. He introduced the public health service in China in 1930s, where he spent three years as a specialist and representative of the then League of Nations.

Korado Korlević is Croatian astronomer of international reputation, infatigable promoter and popularizer of astronomy, especially among the young. He founded the Višnjan Observatory in the town of Višnjan in Istria, where he discovered more than 1,100 asteroids and three comets.

Dr. Drago Štambuk, Croatian Ambassador to Japan, was warmly welcomed at the Kwansei Gakuin University during his official visit to Kobe. One of the best Japanese choirs sang in his honour U Boj, u boj in Croatian language. This Croatian tune is well known throughout Japan, sung in this country since 1919!

Zagreb University (left) is host to one of two programs to study the Croatian language this summer. Sponsored by the Croatian Heritage Foundation, these summer courses allow people born outside of Croatia to learn Croatian language and culture in two intensive courses.

Arithmetika Horvatszka, that is the Croatian Arithmetic, was published in Zagreb in 1758. We celebrate 250 years since the publication of this oldest known Croatian book on arithmetic. It was important also for the development of Croatian scientific terminology.

Msgr. Gerardo Žerdin, Croatian bishop and missionary in Peru in the region of the Amazon river, founded the Nopoki Center for Investigation and Intercultural Formation. The aim is to educate future school teachers for work within their native communities, in order to preserve their roots, language and customs, and ensure material and cultural prosperity.
