» The Croatian Textile Alumni Society and Friends - AMCA TTF

The abbreviation AMAC or AMCA comes from the Latin word Almae Matris Croaticae Alumni, indicating an Society of graduate students of Croatia. AMAC Society of Croatia constitute AMAC domus, and those outside Croatia AMAC mundus. The aims of these associations are to build and strengthen ties and cooperation among former students and home faculties, to preserve tradition and promote the reputation of faculties, to develop faculties and profession. Eleven associations were founded at the University of Zagreb. The idea of founding AMCA TTF was initiated by prof.dr. Ana Marija Grancarić in 2002, who responded to the recommendations of the University of Zagreb to found alumni associations.

Georgius de Sclavonia or Georges d'Esclavonie wrote his book Le chasteau de viriginte in 1411. With this article we mark 600 years since its appearance in France, at the Beaument Benedictine Abbey in the city of Tours. This Croatian scholar studied at the famous Sorbonne in Paris, where he became professor at the beginning of the 15 century. The Municiapl Library of Tours keeps his texts written in the Croatian Glagolitic Script (see on the left), which he expressly calls Alphabetum Chrawaticum. This texts constitute the earliest known Croatian handwritten manual for children, which he reproduced at Sorbonne in Paris, accompanied with his commentaries in Latin.

To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Croatian scientist Rudjer Boskovic, the Royal Society is mounting a small exhibition of rare books and archives relating to Boscovich, his work, and his influence on later British scientists including Joseph Priestley, Humphry Davy and J J Thomson. He visited the Royal Society while in London on a diplomatic mission in 1760, and was immediately elected a Fellow of the Society. The exhibition will open from 24 November 2011 until 15 February 2012.

Joza Vrljičak, indefatiguable director of Studia Croatica society in Buenos Aires, sent us a set of 39 videos describing rich cultural activities of Argentinean Croats. On the photo the logo of Jorgovan,  which is one of very active and successful Croatian cultural societies in Argentina. We also provide a few recepies of Croatian sweets that are popular in Argentina, hoping that they could be useful for your family for the celebration of the forthcoming Christmas and New Year.

Dinko Fio ostvario je i obiman skladateljski opus na temeljima tradicijske glazbe, a neke njegove pjesme toliko su povezane s tradicijom da ih se često smatra izvornim napjevima. Njegov autorski opus objavljen je u jedanaest zbirki i na tridesetak diskografskih izdanja. Kao melograf i obrađivač spasio je od zaborava neke od najljepših narodnih napjeva iz Dalmacije, zapisao ih te priredio za izvedbe dalmatinskih klapa i zborova.

Antun Lučić (Anthony F. Lucas born in Split 1855, died in Washington 1921) is the father of petroleum industry. He discovered the first major gusher in Texas, The Lucas gusher, flowing at the rate of 80-100,000 barrels per day. It blew in January 1901. About 50,000 people came to see it. This meant the earliest massive exploitation of oil and petroleum in the world. Eighteen m. high granite obelisk, built in honour to the Lucas gusher, Spindletop, contains the following lines: "On This Spot on the Tenth Day of the Twentieth Century a New Era in Civilization Began." In 1936 The American Institute for Geological and Metallurgical Investigations founded a prize named after him: Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal. With this article we mark 110 years from this event of worldwide importance.

Marin Soljačić, born in Zagreb in 1974, was promoted to Full Professor of Physics at the Massachusets Institute of Technology, Boston, USA, in July 2011. He is best known for his discovery of possibility of wireless energy transfer. He is also interested in various topics in nonlinear optical physics.   Kristian Kreković 1901-1985 portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in 1936, the Queen Mother in 1938 upon her request, the Swedish King Gustav V, Queen Sofia of Spain and Juan Carlos, and many other. Eighty of his oils have been donated by his wife Sina to Croatia in 1994, and in 2011 a smaller part of this important donation - eighteen oils - is exhibited by the Ethnographic Museum in Croatia's capital Zagreb. The oils refer to old Peruvian Inca and pre-Inca cultures. His 1956 exhibition under the auspices of Peruvian Government in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington has been visited by as many as 126,000 people!

Kristian Kreković 1901-1985 is a distinguished Croatian painter. His main works can be seen in Palma de Mallorca in Museum Krekovic, which has been solemnly opened by Queen Sofia of Spain in 1981. Kreković's 54 drawings have been exhibited on 4 October 2011 in the Modern Gallery in Zagreb in the presence of His Excellency prof.dr. Fedor Devide, plenipotentiary of the Republic of Peru in Croatia, and numerous visitors. The exhibition has been organized by Matrix Croatica, Passion Heritage, and Croatian-Hispanic Society, and is opened until the end of October 2011.
