(E) George Mikan the best basketball player in the USA
|
George Mikan the best basketball player in the USA
George Mikan (1924-2005), born in a Croatian family in Illinois (his both parents are from Vivodina near Karlovac), was the best basketball player in the USA in 1944. He was the first dominant "big man" in NBA, known as the "Gentle Giant". He was also one of the most effective scorers of his time, avareging 22.6 points per game over his nine years long professional career, with the then record of 11,764 points. The Associated Press voted Mikan the greatest basketball player of the first half of the 20th century. When Mikan's LA Lakers came to Madison Square Garden, the marquee simply advertized "Tonight George Mikan versus the Knicks!". How basketball was played at that time, is indicated by the following: he lost four teeth (in his first professional game), had two broken legs, three broken fingers, broken wrist, broken nose and dozens of stitches. Even some NBA rules have been changed because of his superiority. George Mikan was named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1996 (on the occasion of 50 years of NBA), played four NBA all-star games, and is in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Randy donkey was a real pain in the ass...
July 02 2005 at 01:18PM
Zagreb - A randy donkey has been banished to a deserted island after harassing female donkeys at a Croatian national park. Aga the donkey used to badger his favourite females for sex as much as 16 times a day. Park officials acted after tourists complained that whenever they visited the park all the donkey seemed to be doing was trying to have sex.
They also complained that the other donkeys were no longer so friendly and spent all their time hiding from Aga. The herd of wild donkeys had, until recently, been a major attraction for tourists in the popular Telascica National Park in southern Croatia. Park officials say the rest of the herd seems happier and healthier since Aga was caught and shipped off to the deserted island of Dugi Otok.
A spokesperson for the national park said Aga had plenty of food and water on the island, and would be kept there until he "calmed down". The spokesperson said: "The other donkeys in the park were hiding to avoid Aga and that meant they were not mixing with the tourists. But now that Aga has gone they have come out of hiding and are happily mixing with the visitors again." - Ananova.com Op-ed Now, if Croatian donkey can do that, you can just imagine what can Croatian man do?.. and if someone calls you donkey ...again, do not get offended. Take it as an compliment or just go to a deserted island, before they ship you there. Dugi is better than Goli. nb

Move ya sexy ass, donkey
A SEX-mad donkey has been banished to a deserted island after bonking females in a national park SIXTEEN times a day. Wardens said randy Aga’s antics had offended visitors and driven nervous members of his wild herd into hiding.
But they claim the donkeys have now recovered. A spokesman at Croatia’s Telascica National Park said: “With Aga gone, they’ve come out of hiding and are mixing with visitors again.”

(E) Pre-literature and oral traditions in Wales

Wales hosts the whole story
Croatia's Jasna Held, who will tell stories of her life in Croatia during the war
Karen Price, Western Mail Jul 2 2005
WHILE the Hay Literary Festival may be over for another year, Wales is now hosting its annual storytelling event.
Beyond the Border, which opened last night, features performances by writers such as children's favourite Cat Weatherill as well as a host of international names.
The event is dedicated to promoting understanding of the world's pre-literature and oral traditions.
Staged at St Donats Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, Beyond the Border was launched in 1993 and was the centrepiece of a Wales-wide month of storytelling as part of the UK Year of Literature in 1995.
Since then, it has regularly attracted several thousand visitors each year from all over Wales and the world.
The main festival is accompanied by a programme of community outreach work, taking storytellers into schools, hospitals and community centres across South Wales.
Among this year's highlights are the visit from Weatherill, who has written a new children's novel, Barkbelly.
Storytellers who will be travelling to Wales especially for the event include Turkey's Serap Guven and Croatia's Jasna Held, who will tell stories of her life in Croatia during the war. There are also stage shows, music and puppets.
Beyond the Border runs until tomorrow. For further details, ring 01446 799100 or visit the website at www.beyondtheborder.com

(E) Deceiving John Q. Public With a war of images and words
|
Deceiving John Q. Public With a war of images and words BY LOIS WADSWORTH Eugene Weekly Review
WMD: WEAPONS OF MASS DECEPTION: Documentary directed and produced by Danny Schechter. Producer, Anna Pizzaro. Editors, Kozo Okumura, David Chai.Music, Nenad Bach. Cinema Libre Studio, 2004. NR. 98 minutes.
News is big business, and media critic Danny Schechter makes it his business to analyze what gets covered in print and electronically. In choosing to document coverage of the war in Iraq, Schechter shows there are essentially three different wars: the war we see and read about in the US, a commercial war; the war as it appears in Europe; and the war the rest of the world sees. His latest book is Embedded: Weapons of Mass Deception: How the Media Failed to Cover the War on Iraq.
Schechter's conclusions don't come from the haphazard network crawling I did during the so-called war but rather from "embedding" himself in front of the television and watching wall-to-wall coverage. I did some of that during the first Gulf War, in part because a family member was in Saudi at the time, and I was worried about her. Although I was a graduate student in the journalism school at UO, I had trouble detaching emotionally from images and words spoken on the screen. Unlike my experience, Schechter's viewing of this war was methodological. He earned the authority to call the media's lopsided coverage of the war Weapons of Mass Deception.
"There were two wars going on in Iraq," he wrote. "One was fought with armies of soldiers, bombs and a fearsome military force. The other was fought alongside it with cameras, satellites, armies of journalists and propaganda techniques."
If you've been to Schechter's web site - Mediachannel.org - you may have read some of the gazillion words he's written to show a staggering similarity of coverage across media outlets. In WMD the film, reporters outside the mainstream media such as Peter Arnett add their voices to Schechter's. Once an MSNBC correspondent, Ashleigh Banfield was chastised by her bosses at NBC and dropped by the network the following year. Her crime: She told the audience during a speech at Kansas State University the war coverage was "sanitized."
Ooops!
Language control is a subtle but efficient way to limit an argument, a device by which to define the terms and claim the high ground. Using words calculated to put U.S. actions in the best light, the mainstream media knowingly or inadvertently helps the Bush administration get away with murder every day. Maybe Schechter can wake up people who take literally words written thousands of years ago, but I doubt it. It takes an open mind to see how the public is manipulated by what Schechter calls the "militainment" of the post-journalism era.
This film tracks the media war through the summer of 2004. It opens at the Bijou on Friday, Feb. 18 and deserves your support and attendance. Highly recommended.

(E) Celebrating Croatia in Iowa
|
Celebrating Croatia Top Stories
The Croatian Fest Committee is busy with preparations for the 19th annual fest. It will be Saturday, July 30 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 922 West State St., Centerville. The committee gets a jump-start each year when they prepare lunch on Father's Day for a tour group from Iowa Wesleyan College. Each year the group of 30 to 40 comes to Centerville on their tour of Iowa and the committee prepares ethnic food, dress in ethnic costume, present a program on Croatian history of Appanoose county and sing Croatian songs for the group. Croatian immigrants contributed much to the growth of the Appanoose county area. A few migrated from Yugoslavia (now Croatia), settling first in Pennsylvania where they worked in the steel yards. Eventually, some came farther west to work in the coal mines. When word reached relatives that jobs were plentiful in the United States, many more immigrants followed. The countries they left were very poor, but they had dreams of making a better life for their families in a new country. The immigrants came to wherever they had relatives living: Rathbun, Cincinnati, Mystic, Sunshine, Streepy and other towns near Centerville. Because of this, the area is rich in Croatian history. Each year in July, the heritage is celebrated with colorful ethnic costumes, music, dancing and entertainment, as well as home cooked ethnic dishes prepared by the Croatian Fest Committee. This year the celebration will be held Saturday, July 30 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 922 West State St., with opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:00 to 1:00. The menu includes steak and polenta, pigs-in-a-blanket and kraut and the very popular Croatian nut roll. The Jerry Beauchamp Band will entertain from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.. They will then provide the music for a polka mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 5:30 p.m. Organizers of the event say they would like to invite everyone to join them for the polka mass, and then come to the Knights of Columbus Hall for a dance from 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. The band plays all types of music. A sandwich plate special will be served at the dance. Croatian Fest is a wonderful time to share in the Croatian heritage, they say, and also a time to remember the community's heritage. They add that whatever nationality are residents are, it is important to talk to children and their children - "Once the information is lost, it is lost forever."

(E) Spain and Croatia sign tax deal
|
Spain and Croatia sign tax deal
Croatia and Spain recently signed a deal on avoiding double taxation, a move expected to strengthen the two countries’ bilateral cooperation.
The agreement was signed by the Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar- Kitarovic. Zagreb was Moratinos’ last stop on a Balkan tour which also took in Bosnia and Serbia. Moratinos said that the Spanish government wants close cooperation with Croatia, and moreover, wants to help Croatia on its path towards European Union membership.
In March the EU decided not to start accession talks with Croatia because of Zagreb’s failure to extradite former army general Ante Gotovina, whom the UN war crimes tribunal has charged with war crimes. “We are convinced that Croatia will be able to remove the last obstacles, Moratinos told reporters in Zagreb.
