Do Your Part For Croatia!
As Croatia is recognized as an independent country (and as a strong force in world sports and science), it is the duty of all Croatians worldwide to do their part to publicize Croatia, and educate those around us. Be it through stories, pictures, or via links on the internet, we must show the world that we are a civilized, peace-loving people, contrary to the way we are portrayed in some media.

As such, the task I have set for myself is to develop as large an index of Croatian links as possible. Links are broken down into self-explanatory categories. My goal is "unification" of Croatians worldwide through this project.

As you look at my site, please keep in mind that this is a labour of love for Croatia, a strong feeling within me.

Now that you see where I'm coming from, I hope you will help me in this endeavour. If you come across a URL you do not see on my pages, please send it to me, and I'll have it added within a day or two. At the very least, let me add you to our email or personal homepage list.

Ucini Svoje Za Hrvatsku!

Subject: Croatian and Serbian

Dear Sir:

As is correctly pointed out in your description of the Croatian and
Serbian, many words are entirely different in both languages. The reason
the people understand each other is that they lived together in
Yugoslavia for 72 years and the ruling Serbs deliberately put Serb words
into use in Croatian schools, in order to obliterate the difference, thus
coining the language "Serbo-Croatian".

Since Croatians first came to the Adriatic and the rest of today's
Croatia in the 7th century, they of course spoke Croatian, not
"Serbo-Croatian" which expression is still too often found in the media
and academia. Croats are proud of their language and would like to have
it recognized as such.

Sincerely,

» (E) NFCA Meets With State Department

OFFICIALS OF THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF CROATIAN AMERICANS MEET WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT

(Washington, D.C., April 15, 2002). On Wednesday, April 10, 2002, John Kraljic, President of the National Federation of Croatian Americans (NFCA), Steve Rukavina, a former President of the NFCA, and Joseph Foley of Foley Government & Public Relations, Inc. met with State Department officials to express their concerns regarding the low level of monies proposed to be allocated to Croatia for Fiscal Year 2003.

The budget proposal allocates only $30 million to Croatia and $50 million to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This compares with proposed allocations of $110 million for Serbia, $25 million for Montenegro and $85 million for Kosovo.State Department officials generally explained that foreign aid for European states is being decreased as a result of increased needs in Afghanistan. Within Europe, most aid is directed to Southeastern Europe, which includes aid for Albania and Bulgaria (each of which will receive $28 million under the proposal) and Romania (which will receive $29 million under the proposal). Essentially, a block of money is dedicated to the region, with the money then divided among those countries receiving aid.

Effectively, this means that every dollar Serbia and Monetenegro receive is a dollar less in the common pool for other countries, including Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Those present on behalf of the NFCA made a forceful case for increased funding for Croatia. Note was made of Croatia’s continuing need for economic assistance. Mr. Kraljic, for instance, noted that Croatia had housed more Bosnian Muslim refugees than any other country in the world. The housing of these and Croat refugees primarily in hotels and other tourist facilities along Croatia’s Adriatic coast caused tremendous damage to Croatia’s tourist infrastructure which to this day has not been fully repaired.

Moreover, Mr. Kraljic noted Croatia’s assistance in NATO’s war on Serbia, its continuing cooperation with the International War Crimes Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and other points which show that Croatia remains the only nation in the region on which the United States can rely. Those officials of the State Department present noted that the reasons for the disparity in amount of aid were based on a variety of factors including demographic considerations.
Mr. Kraljic believes that disparity reflects the continued importance which State Department officials to give to Serbia, viewing it as an important factor in the area. Indeed, as Mr. Kraljic noted, though the greatest war damage in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (i.e., Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo) was inflicted on Kosovo, the Republic of Serbia will receive $25 million in aid more than Kosovo!
State Department officials did point out that Serbia will not receive the aid unless it cooperates with the ICTY. But, as Mr. Kraljic noted after the meeting, current American policy merely calls for a suspension of aid. "All that means is that Serbia is really not being penalized; a real penalty would be for Serbia to forfeit its allocation and to give the money to those countries, such as Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are cooperating with the ICTY," said Mr. Kraljic.
Mr. Kraljic and Mr. Rukavina further complained to State Department officials concerning where the funding Croatia is receiving is being directed. Mr. Kraljic noted that one subcontractor which is receiving American tax-payer dollars includes the Serbian Democratic Forum (SDF). Led by Veljko Dzakula, a former official of the so-called Republika Srpska Krajina, a statelet established by pro-Milosevic Serbs which engaged in massive war crimes against Croat civilians, the SDF receives monies to work on minority returnee assistance.

During the meeting, Mr. Kraljic protested the hypocrisy of providing money to such a group and noted the NFCA’s belief that little money is provided to Croat-controlled NGO’s which provide assistance to returning Croat refugees, especially those seeking to return to Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina.Mr. Rukavina also noted during the meeting that the State Department has done little to promote ties between Croatian-American business leaders and Croatian businesses. "If you look at many other Eastern European nations, each have business councils which promote ties between the diaspora and the home country business communities," Mr. Rukavina said, pointing to an especially active Ukrainian group as an example which receives USAID funding. "This has not been the case with respect to Croatia and this needs to be addressed as well."

The NFCA has determined to ask Croatia’s friends in Congress to support an appropriations bill which would at least keep Croatia’s budget allocation for Fiscal Year 2003 at its current level of $44 million. The NFCA calls on all of Croatia’s supporters in the community to contact their Congressmen to protest the unjust allocations being given to Croatia.

The NFCA is a national umbrella organization whose members have approximately 130,000 members.

Andrónico Luksic: "A rich Croatian of the world"

What makes the Luksics different is that still they are proud of its origins, that in anything are looked like those of some families of santiagueñas. Grandfathers Policarpio Luksic arrived from Croatia to Antofagasta at the beginning of century. He was an emigrant like many others who arrived to America fleeing from hunger. One married a woman of good family of Bolivian origin, Elena Abaroa. Of that marriage two children were born: Vladimir and Andrónico.

They are completely different men: one Bohemian, the other an empreneur. Andrónico marched to France after II the World war and worked negotiating in the black market currency exchange. Upon his return, he shared his earnings with his brother and his mother, Juan Abaroa, the owner of a concessionaire of Ford automobiles. But it was not until he turned 50 when Andrónico found his calling. Lost in the desert of the north of Chile, he discovered what would be the fundamental business of the family: mining.

His skill to detect copper veins was allied, like no, to its good star. At the end of the decade of the 1950s, the Japanese company Nippon Mines did a supply to him by one of its deposits. Andrónico Luksic I answered immediately requesting 500,000 pesos by the deposit. Weeks later, the Japanese answered accepting the supply by 500,000 dollars. This confusion (the Nippon Mines always thought that Luksic spoke in dollars) suddenly made Luksic rich to which until, then they were only modest industralists of the province of Antofagasta.

From then, Andrónico Luksic I began to buy small participation in Stock market of diverse companies in the copper sector, banking, and fishing. Andrónico Luksic I, the creator of one of the most important empires of Latin America, did not wage the war to the Socialists. The sale decided with the Government some its main companies (mainly of the mining sector) in exchange for which it was allowed to maintain the property him of other companies in the agricultural sector and of feeding. When the coup d'etat of September of 1973 took place, Luksic I Beyond paid expensive its deal with the devil. During five years, Pinochet fixed them so that the Luksic did not gain nor only an aid of the privatizador process that started up. Nevertheless, that hostile act towards the Luksic became with the passage of time a great favor.

Most of the great families chose privatization when they became indebted in dollars. When the crisis from principles of the 80 arrived and the weight sank, many of which santo and the alms of the dictator had raised themselves with had to request aid. The Luksic, which they had stayed in discreet background, had liquidity and could buy much more to a price under the companies to which they could not decide on political reasons. Pinochet, without wanting it, had contributed to make more fort to the only private group that him had not rendered pleitesía. It was the good star of the Luksic. The office of Andrónico Luksic II, first-born son of Andrónico Luksic and president of the Bank of Santiago, is as small as the one of any medium executive of a great company. There are no pictures, neither carpets, nor movable expensive. A small statuette of Napoleón is the unique one I ornament in a full table of papers. "I like Napoleón because of him I learned an important thing: one cannot be believed invincible ". But the great jump did not take place until the first years of the decade of the 80, with the crisis and the devaluation of the weight. Luksic then bought Higgins Bank. The Luksic has grown of flashing form, always accompanied by their good star, until becoming the first group of the country. With its aggressive and agile style.

Vecernji List: 13. travnja 2002

Prof. dr. ZARKO DOLINAR, HRVATSKI ZNANSTVENIK I SPORTAS SVJETSKOGA GLASA
Glagol intelegere znaci nesto stalno razmisljati, kombinirati, analizirati, istrazivati, stalno duhovno prebirati... U nas to nije uobicajeno.
To mora ciniti i znanstvenik intelektualac.
Jednostavno sute. Vec 50 godina sanjamo o nekome tko bi trebao imati kraljeznicu, uspravnost, inteligenciju, sposobnost, znanje, karizmu, popularnost...
Nepojmljivo.
Tezimo tome da covjek u buducnosti iskazuje svoje najbolje genetske strane, a danas on cini ono najgore - kolje, proganja, mrzi, ubija, osvecuje...

Odredio bih
inventar znanja, odnosno duhovno i kulturno blago naseg naroda.
Zabranio bih i sluzbene
automobile.
Osobno bih svima njima darovao bicikle. Ionako je porazno malo
spontano aktivnih u sportu, svega sest do osam posto. To je moja dalja zalost. zalosno, ali
istinito.

Hvala i Zvonimiru i Zarku. Radi sebe.

Relativne brojke izgledaju ovako: Toronto 17-20 counts/min. Zagreb i vecina Hrvatske vrlo slicno: 15-20 counts/min. Lika oko Lovinca 25-35 counts/min (najvise u Hrvatskoj -od onoga sto sam sam izmjerio). Samobor i okolica :10-15 counts/min.
Dakle do sada izgleda nije bilo problema s Krskim.

206 Join Congressional Wine Caucus
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 4:01 p.m. ET
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Labels are everything when this group of lawmakers gets together. Not conservative and liberal, but cabernet, chardonnay and merlot.
The Congressional Wine Caucus, which numbers 206 representatives and senators, is among the largest in the Capitol. Well-known wine-producing states such as California, New York, Oregon and Washington are, of course, well represented. But so are Michigan, Vermont and Alaska. Alaska? Sure. The 49th state produces wines from berries, rhubarb and vegetables.
In fact, every state has at least one winery among the roughly 2,000 in the United States, says Bill Nelson, vice president of the American Vintners Association.
But the lure of the caucus is often simpler than that.

``How many people do you know that don't like wine?'' asked Rep. George Radanovich, R-Calif, a vineyard owner who is caucus co-chairman. Every special interest group on Capitol Hill has its receptions and many feature educational trips to warm-weather spots. But in the Wine Caucus, tasting the subject matter evidently is the best way to get to know it.
``Remember, anything in moderation,'' advised Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., the other co-chairman whose Northern California district includes many vineyards.
At a recent Wine Caucus event, the aphorisms and biblical quotes about wine were as plentiful as the product: Drink wine for what ails you. The waters of the world separate us, but the wines of the world bring us together.
Radanovich and Thompson reconstituted the Wine Caucus in 1999 to lobby colleagues on wine-related issues -- against limits on Internet and mail-order sales, for more money to fight diseases that attack vines and market U.S. wines abroad.
An earlier, smaller version of the caucus existed in the 1980s, when it was led by then-Sen. Pete Wilson, R-Calif. But it faded away in the 1990s.
Membership climbed quickly from 75 three years ago because of the proliferation of wineries across the country, Nelson said.
The wine itself may be a friendly way to get someone's attention, but the topic is serious business in California, where $33 billion a year and 145,000 jobs flow from wine production, according to the Wine Institute, the California wine industry's advocacy organization.
Radanovich and Thompson will travel next month to Brussels, Belgium, and London at taxpayer expense to meet with counterparts in the European Parliament and discuss the United States' new wine-based alliance with Australia, Canada, Chile and New Zealand.
But any reason will do to join the Wine Caucus, which receives no government money and also sponsors fund-raising dinners for the Children's Hospital in Washington.
Thompson is two states shy -- Idaho and Nebraska -- of his goal of having all 50 states in the caucus. He persuaded the most recent addition, Rep. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., by emphasizing that Vermont has wine lovers and good restaurants that serve fine wines, even if wine production is not important to the state.
Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, belongs to the caucus because of his long-standing opposition to taxes on alcohol and tobacco, press secretary Amy Inaba said.

Sampling a red wine from Croatia at a reception to mark U.S.-Croatian friendship, Rep. Howard Coble, R-N.C., described the rapid growth of winemaking in his state.
``I don't believe I have one in my district, but I have wineries in counties contiguous to my district and that's why I joined,'' Coble said.
The Californians who run the Wine Caucus disagree more often than not in Congress, but their partisan differences end at the vineyard's edge.

At the Croatian wine tasting, Radanovich, son of Croatian immigrants, proposed recognizing Thompson as an honorary Croat. Said Thompson, ``I'll drink to that.''
