(E) Croatians On The Stamps Of The World
|
Croatian Heritage Foundation The Croatian Heritage Foundation branch from Split ( or in Croatian - Hrvatska matica iseljenika ) celebrates the 50th anniversary and because of this fastive occasion, has organized the exhibition under the title ''CROATIANS ON THE STAMPS OF THE WORLD''. The exhibition has been created thanks to cooperation of this office with the Philatelic Club ''Split'' , so the authors were the president of the club Mr. Pjero Baranovic and the chief of the Matica's office in Split, Mrs Branka Bezic Filipovic. The opening of the exhibition will be on Tuesday, July 29th 2003. at Hrvatska matica iseljenika, Nodilova 1/ II ; 21000 Split, Croatia at 20 hours. It will be inaugurated by the deputy mayor Mr Zeljko Sikirica.
As Croatian people are not numerous, it is quite surprising that the world philatelic has given them so much space. The most numerous are the stamps with the image of president Tito, who was obviously popular at his time as well as the ones with the image of the scientist Nikola Tesla. The exhibition begins with a special occasional envelope, designed by Branka Bezic Filipovic, which shows a back side of a boat full of people, which symbolically shows how Croatians were leaving their homes in the past looking for the better lives. The exhibition is divided into sections. Some show art, literature, music, scientist, saints, sportsman and other interesting people. As for this office, the most interesting are the scientist Ivan Vucetic from Hvar who lived in Argentina where he has invented daktiloscopic method and another one Simon Martinic from Brac who was the founder of the philatelic in Bolivia.
We can mention a couple of them more : Franz von Supe- who was born in Split, Croatia in 1819. and studied medicine in Italy. But his love for music brought him in Wienna where he has studied music and later became a composer using Dalmatian folk music in his classical works.
Paola Preradovic, grand daughter of Croatian poet Petar Preradovic. She was born in Wienna in 1887 and she was a writer. It is interesting that she is the author of the lyrics of the hymn of the Republic of Austria.
Pope Sixtus V. who was born in Krusevica in 1520. and was a successful pope for 5 years. Nikola Tesla who was born in Smiljane, Lika in 1856. and has invented electricity. Faust Vrancic born in Sibenik in 1551, and has invented the parachute. The exhibition will be opened until September .
Branka Bezic Filipovic bbezicfi@inet.hr | | Nikola Tesla Nikola Tesla, one of greatest inventors of all times, gave his name to tesla unit of magnetic induction in the metre-kilogram-second system of physical units. Nikola Tesla was the recipient of many awards and he refused them; among others awards he rejected the Nobel Prize too. He left 112 different patents: electric motors, transformers, transmitters of electric energy, high frequency techniques, radio techniques, telemechanics, turbines, hydromechanics and a number of non-announced patent rights. His almost unexplored inheritance houses his papers and 70-100.000 his laboratory notes written by his own hand. Tesla was born on July 9/10, 1856, in Smiljan (Lika). He attended elementary school at Gospic, high school at Karlovac and the prestigious Technical University at Graz. He went to work in Budapest and Paris, in 1883 he constructed his first induction motor. Unable to continue with the electric motor development in Europe, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1884. In 1887 he sold the patent rights to his polyphase system of alternating-current dynamos, transformers and motors to George Westinghouse. Tesla had been called the genius who ushered in the power age. He died in New York City (1943). Source: Croatian Post and Telecommunications

Zao mi je sto to sad moramo prodavati, ali, takav je zivot, nek' samo ostanemo zdravi. (E) Bulgarian business in Croatia?
Bulgarian business in Croatia? Issue 30: July 25 to 31, 2003 Business MG restructures its portfolio Business Staff MG Corporation, one of Bulgaria's biggest business groups, is restructuring its portfolio after the murder of its founder and president Iliya Pavlov in March. Pavlov was the country's richest businessman, reportedly worth $1.8 billion. He was killed in front of his office in Sofia on March 7 this year by a sniper. The new management, headed by Boyana Popova, recently decided to sell all unnecessary real estate. Four big properties in Sofia have already been put up for sale, sources told 24 Chassa last week. According to the newspaper, the same is going to happen to a dozen stores and offices in the city. This follows the evaluation of these properties by a Sofia real estate agency. The PR manager of MG Corporation, Dimitar Nedkov, refused to comment these sales. He also said he did not know whether Pavlov's sister, Slavka, still worked for MG. According to 24 Chassa, she has left the corporation. In July, the corporation sold its stake in the Stara Zagora scrap metal factory. MG acquired the factory in 1996, paying 124 million non-denominated Bulgarian leva ($2 million). Seventy per cent of the price was paid to the state in long term bonds. Today, 17 per cent of the company is still owned by the state but this remaining stake has also been put up for sale against investment vouchers and compensatory no-tes on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange. According to 24 Chassa, MG is also conducting a reform of its tourism operations. The corporation will soon resume the building of two hotels in Dubrovnik, Croatia. MG also plans to register its subsidiary, which has changed its name from Inex Goritza Zagreb to MG Adriatic, in central and north Croatia. The Croatia News Digest reported that MG would invest 20-25 million euro in the Libertas hotel, which the corporation bought it in April 2002 for 4.5 million euro. Not everything in the region has gone as smoothly for MG. The corporation failed in a bid for the Serbian Putnik tourist agency. This was acquired by a US company, which offered $50 million for 70 per cent of the assets. MG was unable to offer more than 11.5 million. Balkantourist, which manages MG's tourist business is also undergoing structural change to turn it into a modern travel agency. The directors of Balkantourist have sent a questionnaire to the directors of hotels it owns, asking them: "Do you think that you will be more successful in the future, if your hotel is not in the MG business group?" On June 28, Pavlov's widow, Darina, was appointed to the supervisory board of the Grand Hotel Varna on the northern Black Sea coast, which is owned by MG Corporation. Popova will also enter the hotel's supervisory board, but Balkantourist was excluded from it. The hotel posted a 1.8 million leva accounting loss in 2002, but reported a one million leva revenue in the first quarter of 2003. MG has also come off worse in a bitter competition with TIM Corporation who got brought 72 per cent of shares in the St. Konstantin and Elena Complex. Despite the company's management repeatedly declaring an interest in the deal, MG was only able to acquire 11 per cent of the shares. After TIM Corporation's acquisition the Balkantourist CEO, Nedialka Sandalka, was excluded from the resort's board of directors. Things have also not been good for MG's football club, Chernomore from Varna. Radio Sport recently reported that MG wanted to declare it bankrupt. A businessman from Varna, Ivan Petrov, offered to buy the club for 1 lev to save it from closing down. Since then, another interested has appeared, the 47-year old Georgi Gergov, known in the business circles for his influence in the Slanchev Den seaside resort. He is also owner of one of the biggest hotels in Plovdiv. The investigation into Pav-lov's murder is continuing. Source: http://www.sofiaecho.com/art.php?id=7745&catid=23

(E) Parking meter payments in Zagreb, Croatia by M-commerce
Parking meter payments in Zagreb, Croatia by M-commerce M-commerce New ways to shop with your cellphone With improved technology, mobile commerce targets impulse purchases on the move such as buying event tickets IN THE heady, techie days of 2000, the hype around mobile commerce was so great that as many as 100 'm-commerce' start-ups were forming every month in Europe, with predictions that the market would be worth US$23.7 billion (S$41.6 billion) by this year. Today, most of the start-ups have died. M-commerce has been delayed because it did not pass the test for any new technology to take off. That is, being simple, useful and trusted, said Mr Tomi Dahlberg, a professor of mobile commerce at the Helsinki School of Economics. Mobile phones are unlikely to ever fully replace credit cards or cash. But now that improvements have been made, the technology could become a popular way of making impulse purchases on the move, such as public transportation or theatre tickets, said Mr Nick Jones, an analyst in the London office of the consulting firm Gartner Inc. Hindsight has not wiped all rosy glasses clean, however. Experts today have a wide range of projections for this niche market: from $500 million to as much as $225 billion in revenue by 2005. The anticipated business is enough to prompt operators to get their act together. More sophisticated m-commerce services are being introduced in Asia and Europe, with plans for a global system to tie it all together. In recent months, Asian operators like NTT DoCoMo in Japan, CSL in Hong Kong and Smart Communications in the Philippines have started m-commerce services that allow consumers to use their phones to make credit card purchases for everything from perfume to pizza. The approaches differ, but rather than making a voice call or punching in all of the credit card details for each purchase, the services offer secure shortcuts by storing the buyer's details and asking for simpler forms of authentication, such as a four-digit code. More than 50 per cent of parking meter payments in Zagreb, Croatia, are now made via cellphone data services. In Helsinki, as many as one-third of subway, tram and bus tickets are now sold via mobile phones. In Austria, people use cellphones to buy ski passes and ski-related injury insurance. They can also buy cigarettes from specially equipped vending machines, and pay for taxi and subway rides and event tickets. But most existing payment systems are limited by national borders and the lack of inter-operability among phone operators. Enter Simpay, a consortium just formed by Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and Telefsnica Msviles. Simpay aims to make it easier for consumers to buy MP3 music files, games, maps, video clips or filling a parking meter and having it charged to their phone bill, regardless of what technology their mobile operator is using. Mr Tim Jones, chief executive of Simpay, said that while shoppers would probably not use cellphones over credit cards in stores, he and the rest of the mobile services sector are betting they will use cellphones to buy on the fly. -- International Herald Tribune Source: http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/techscience/story/0,4386,202156,00.html

(E) These war crimes must be brought to the public
|
These war crimes must be brought to the public Pozdrav Nenade,
I would appreciate if you could let me have addresses of any of the Croatian Societies or Clubs or Unions in US and Canada.
I would like to write them a e-mail or letter (if they don't have a e-mail address) regarding my book "Outcast Without Guilt ..." to promote the truth and personal facts regarding the genocide of Croatian civilians and soldiers in the aftermath of WW2. These war crimes and the irrevocable loss of life of more than 100.000 Croatian potent males must be brought to the public and to be followed up by younger Croatian generations. I will pursue this tragic subject wholeheartedly as my time is inevitably going to run out sometime but before "my last two hours come" I must do what ever it is possible.
Take care and I remain with cordial regards through the authorized e-scribe-on-duty alias ESOD
Zvonko of Oak Hill alias Zvonimir as "Bell-ringer for Peace"
