Croatian American Family Hosts A Night Of A Thousand Dinners --
Benefit To Assist Global Humanitarian Mine Action

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(November 24, 2001 - North Potomac, MD) - On November 30th, 2001 Montgomery
County area residents in Maryland will join Sir Paul McCartney and fiancé
Heather Mills, Her Majesty Queen Noor, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell,
and the Canadian Governor General, H.E. Adrienne Clarkson in attending
dinners held around the world to raise awareness and resources for the
international landmine crisis.

The recent fighting in Afghanistan has brought renewed attention to this
pressing global health, environmental and developmental issue. Tens of
thousands of fleeing refugees and Allied troops face what many ordinary
Afghan people have faced for decades - the fear of encountering one of the
millions of landmines or unexploded ordnances in the ground. Every year
approximately 18,000 people are killed or maimed by landmines and, one-third
are children. More than 80 million landmines
are buried in more than 80 countries that were once ravaged by war.

The Rukavina family in North Potomac, Maryland, working with the National
Federation of Croatian Americans, decided to take action to support this
humanitarian effort. The Maryland dinner featuring Croatian foods will be one
of
some one thousand being hosted around the world on or around November 30th as
part of the Night of a Thousand Dinners. This international initiative
coordinated by the Canadian Landmine Foundation (CLF) and the United Nations
Association of the USA will raise funds for Adopt-A-Minefield and other
organizations that are all addressing different aspects of the global
landmine crisis. All funds raised at the North Potomac dinner will be
earmarked for the Adopt-A-Minefeld organization and de-mining operations in
Croatia and will qualify for U.S. government matching funds.

Heather Mills, honorary chairperson of Adopt-A-Minefield, who is to marry the
former Beatle next year, said: “I normally cook dinner at home and Paul makes
the breakfast, but on this occasion he’ll be helping me and we’ll share the
cooking.” McCartney has also donated signed lithographs of his painting
Amnesty to be given as prizes to three lucky hosts. The Rukavina dinner event
will feature several Croatian dinner entrees, supplied by the Embassy of the
Republic of Croatia.

“Night of a Thousand Dinners is a way for every person to contribute to the
global mine clearance effort while being among friends and family in their
own homes,” said Jason Rukavina, a senior at Wootton High School. “Every
person’s contribution makes an important difference to the people who live in
fear of the threat of landmines every day.”

“I am excited to play a part in creating a safer, mine-free world and to help
raise money for de-mining in Croatia,” said Jason Rukavina. “Night of a
Thousand Dinners enables everyone to make a meaningful difference with this
worldwide problem."

» (E) Don Wolf of Kansas City - A Croatian you should know!
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/25/2001 | Culture And Arts | Unrated
If you have never heard of Don Wolf of Kansas City, then you are missing a
great story. This man has been the guardian angel for the sisters and
orphans at St. Theresa's Orphanage in Zagreb for the past 10 years or more.
He has taken their cause to many people and tirelessly raised funds to keep
building from collapsing and to keep the sisters and their efforts from
bankruptcy. He visits there every year and has many of the photos from his
visits on the Internet. Unfortunately, the government does little to support
their efforts and they must rely on the generosity of the public.

If anyone is feeling generous this holiday season, donations can be sent to
the orphanage through Don at:

St. Theresa's Orphanage
c/o Don Wolf
3535 North 63 Terrace
Kansas City. Kansas 61104

Unlike other charities, ALL MONEY goes directly and immediately to the
orphanage.
The nuns at the orphanage can be reached via e-mail at: se000@globalnet.hr

» (E) John Babarovic, 69, Architect at Airports, Dies
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/25/2001 | Culture And Arts | Unrated
Do our London based friends or Rijecani know of John Babarovic? And is
this Susak (island) or Susak [ sushak] (part of Rijeka - across the River
Rjecina). In New York Times it says Susak, Yugo. (geography for 70 years
ago). All Babarovics that I know are Croatian. Seems like very accomplished
life.

John Babarovic, 69, Architect at Airports, Dies
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

John A. Babarovic, an architect who worked on major airport projects as well
as residential architecture, died on Nov. 2 in London, where he lived. He was
69.
The cause was complications after heart surgery, his family said.
Mr. Babarovic was director of long-range planning at American Airlines in the
late 1960's. He represented the airline in the design and engineering of the
Super Bay Hangars in Los Angeles and San Francisco. These were the largest in
the world at the time, designed to accommodate four of the new Boeing 747's
and two DC-10's under one roof. He also designed the American Airlines
terminal at San Francisco.
While with the firm of Harrison & Abramowitz in New York, he worked on the
Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center and the Citibank headquarters. At
the time of his death he was working on a double- decker docking system for
the Airbus A380, a superjumbo jet that is planned to have two seating levels.
Mr. Babarovic was born in Susak, Yugoslavia, and was a graduate of St.
George's College in Argentina and Syracuse University. He served in the
United States Army, in military intelligence, in the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Crawford Babarovic of London; a sister,
Frances Baglantzis of New Rochelle, N.Y.; two daughters from a previous
marriage, Juliana Babarovic Jaynes of Newport News, Va., and Christina Maria
Babarovic of London; and a grandson.

» (E) The Univ. Library of Rijeka invites you to Ex-Libris Exhibition
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/25/2001 | Culture And Arts | Unrated
Dear friends,

The University Library of Rijeka invites you to see the Third International
Ex-Libris Exhibition «Old Scripts» which will be opened on Tuesday 6th
November 2001. The invitation is enclosed hereto. Participating in this
Exhibition are 332 authors from 42 countries with 746 ex-libris. The text of
the invitation and list of awarded authors, as well as the catalog of this
Exhibition can be found on the E pages of the University Library of Rijeka (
http://www.svkr.hr)

On this occasion the original speeches of the distinguished Latinist, _imun
Ko_i_i_ Benja, that he gave at the Lateran Council in 1512 and 1516 will also
be exhibited, wherein he describes the horrible sufferings of Croatian and
its people under the Ottomans, and his appeals for aid which came from
nowhere. Besides, only on the opening evening, one will be able to see the
editions of the printing-office that this banished bishop set up in Rijeka
(1530-1531):
Psalter, 1530/1531 (reprint from 1976)
The Roman Office, Rijeka 1530 (the original is property of the National and
University Library)
Misal hruacki (Croatian Missal), 1531 (the original is property of the
National and University Library)
Book of the Cross, Rijeka, 1531 (reprint from 1984)
Book about the lives of Roman popes and emperors (Knji_ice od _itija rimskih
arhierjeov i cesarov), Rijeka, 1531 (original-fragments, property of HAZU)
Book on the Character of a Member of Monastic Order (Od bitija redovni_koga
knji_ice), Rijeka, 1531 (photocopy of first page)

This Exhibition is organized thanks to the good will and understanding of NSK
and HAZU, as well as CROATIA Osiguranje, Branch-office Rijeka.

This Ex-Libris Exhibition is planning to make guest appearances. Hence the
first guest appearance is to take place in Berlin as a sideshow of the main
exhibition of the heritage of Glagolitic script and Croatian literature:
"Three Languages and Three Scripts of One Nation" at the Staatsbibliothek in
the beginning of 2002. The exhibit is easy to transport and the catalog is
printed bilingually (Croatian and English). Thereafter the plan is to
organize guest appearances in Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik. We welcome all
possibilities for guest appearances abroad.
If any of our friends from the AMAC network wish to have the catalog they can
place an order
This is one of the ways of expressing our Croatian awareness and our place in
the world. As to how successful we have been in this sense, we leave that to
the decision of the numerous visitors to this Exhibition and to our E pages.

We also invite our dear friends of the AMAC network to visit us. Soon the E
pages of the University Library of Rijeka will come out with a virtual
exhibition of Glagolitic script as an electronic reflection of the actual
exhibition that has for 33 years now since it was first put up been a display
of this theme that is unique in the world.
Welcome.
