» (E) Wild Card Ivanisevic Upsets Kuerten at Masters Cup

Wild Card Ivanisevic Upsets Kuerten at Masters Cup
Kafelnikov Rallies to Beat Ferrero

By PAUL TAIT
.c Reuters

SYDNEY, Australia (Nov. 13) -- Goran Ivanisevic dented Gustavo Kuerten's
hopes of claiming the year-end top ranking when he outlasted the French Open
champion to win their Masters Cup round robin match 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 Tuesday.

Ivanisevic described the win as his best since his extraordinary Wimbledon
victory last June because he overcame Kuerten by playing his natural serve
and volley game instead of being lured into a baseline battle with the
Brazilian.

"Yeah, it was, especially because of the way I played, I know I don't have a
chance if I stay back and rally with him so every chance I had I tried to hit
a winner or come in, don't give him any rhythm," Ivanisevic said.

Ivanisevic's win came after Olympic champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov produced a
blistering seven-game blitz to beat Juan Carlos Ferrero 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 in a
much scrappier opening match of the Ken Rosewall Group.

Ivanisevic is only 13th in the Champions Race which Kuerten heads and made it
into the elite eight-man tournament by virtue of his Wimbledon victory, which
he achieved as a wild card.

But it was as if Ivanisevic was atop the Champions Race and not Kuerten as he
raced through the first set in only 25 minutes.

"Maybe it's the lucky wild card thing again," Ivanisevic said.

The eighth-seeded Croatian completely dominated the early stages of the
match, pounding Kuerten with heavy serves and unplayable forehands.

He stumbled as he closed in on an unlikely victory but regained his
composure, serving his 28th ace to set up match point and then punching a
backhand volley crosscourt on the next point to finish an intense match in
one hour and 51 minutes.

It was one of those days when the "good Goran" turned up to play -- the
Croatian's way of explaining the two sides of his volatile nature.

Ivanisevic's power game helped him to break Kuerten's serve in the second
game of the first set and he claimed another break six games later when he
rifled a backhand service return past a bewildered Kuerten.

Kuerten served solidly in the second set but was never able to settle into
his baseline routine against Ivanisevic, whose serve regularly topped 118.1
miles per hour.

The Brazilian kept plugging away and at least managed to keep his own serve
on track during the second set to force the tiebreak, which he won 7-2.

Ivanisevic later said he was suffering from a sore toe, which he stubbed in
the shower of his Sydney hotel last week, but he put the pain aside much as
he has with the shoulder injury that has dogged the latter stages of his
enigmatic career.

Despite being upset by a handful of line calls which threatened to bring out
"bad Goran," Ivanisevic held his nerve to close out the match in front of a
disappointingly small crowd of about 3,000 in the 17,800 capacity SuperDome.

Kuerten came into the tournament with indifferent form, losing six of his
eight matches since the U.S. Open. Kuerten said Ivanisevic's serve was the
difference but admitted that he is becoming frustrated with his slump.

"It just shows the way I've been playing. It's tough for me when I'm not
playing well," he said.

Kuerten's loss opens the way for challengers Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi.

The Brazilian leads the Champions Race by 48 points from Hewitt, with Agassi
another 39 points adrift in third.

Hewitt and Agassi meet in a crucial round-robin match Wednesday. Either
player can afford to drop one round-robin match and still have the chance to
beat Kuerten for the top spot.

Australia's Hewitt beat Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean in the John Newcombe
Group on Monday, while Agassi downed Hewitt's Davis Cup teammate Pat Rafter.

Kafelnikov appeared to be headed for a heavy defeat in an error-prone opening
to his first round robin match, gifting Spanish baseliner Ferrero a
succession of easy points.

Kafelnikov complained about the height of the net at the start of the second
set. Match officials found it to be five centimeters too high and the net was
adjusted during a short delay.

From that point on Kafelnikov's serve and forehand began finding their range
and he strung together a match-turning sequence of seven straight games
against fourth seed Ferrero, who is playing in the $3.7 million tournament
for the first time.

» (E) Armed SFOR soldiers raid the HTV Mostar and Croatian Radio Mostar premises
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/18/2001 | Politics | Unrated
HEADLINES, Thursday, November 15, 2001
Source: Dnevni List, November 14, 2001

Armed SFOR soldiers raid the HTV Mostar and Croat Radio Mostar premises

Yesterday at 10 o'clock, members of the SFOR unit of a mixed composition
raided into the premises of the Croat Radio Mostar and HTV Mostar. Allegedly,
according to them, it is about an inspection, which was announced earlier and
which is a part of the mandate of the SFOR Mission in BiH. French and Spanish
soldiers were armed with Heckler rifles, and they were communicating through
handsets.

Weapons talk

The appearance of armed SFOR members frightened the personel of two media
outlets and introduced considerable unrest among Croatian journalists. All
of this reminded of the earlier military actions taken against EROTEL,
Hercegovacka Banka, Mostar's Municipal Councli, and others. However, this
time SFOR's target was the Croatian media and journalists, whose rights were
trampled on in the most brutal was by the 'Peace Stabilization Forces'.
According to one of the officers, who were standing at the entrance of the
building and who wanted to remain anonymous, SFOR conducted the 'inspection'
in accordance with the order from the CRA from Sarajevo and in coordination
with their commanding officer in the Ortijes military base near Mostar.
According to Josef Macrey, the SFOR Spokesperson in Sarajevo, this is about
"a routine, announced control, whose purpose is to verify whether the
communication equipment of these media outlets is in accordance with the
Dayton Peace Agreement". To our question whether he is aware of the fact
that the Dayton Peace agreement was signed six years ago whether he is aware
of the fact that the DPA was signed 6 years ago, we did not get a
satisfactory answer, except that obligations from the Agreement are being
implemented.

The CRA is responsible?!

We contacted the CRA and received an answer from Amela Odobasic, who told us,
after checking, that the CRA did not issue any order for the raid of these
two media outlets. However, according to well-informed sources, close to the
CRA, it is claimed that the CRA, "after a series of gathered information from
viewers, and others, the CRA decided to suggest to SFOR to conduct an
inspection, which is part of the SFOR mandate for BiH, in which they can also
execute unannounced inspections

Fear and uneasiness

To our question whether the CRA will protect the Croat electronic media, Mrs.
Odobasic told us that the CRA can only suggest to SFOR not to be violent
towards the staff and journalists, but that SFOR inspections are a part of
their mandate.

We received a few statements, from journalists who requested to remain
anonymous, which stated that the SFOR soldiers were not violent, they were
polite, but their showing up fully armed scared and disturbed them, because
that isn't an appropriate manner for conducting any sort of inspection.

Successful "Inspection

According to Vlatko Menix, the Head of the HTV Mostar, the SFOR officers
behaved decently and the inspection was executed successfully. Tomislav
Mazal, the Head of the Croat Radio Mostar, stated that the inspection in his
media outlet was executed without any problems and the SFOR soldiers behaved
decently.

SFOR breached Dayton?

Many people believe that the DPA was severely violated by this raid of
military forces into premises of the media outlets, and that this case should
be examined exclusively because of such behavior of the SFOR. Also, a few
International Charters on Rights and Freedom of Media have been violated and
nothing, including the SFOR and its mandate, can justify this. One TV
technician told us: "'At the moment, when I was working on a TV report, an
armed solder showed up at the door and I was so scared that I did not know
how to behave. I was only thinking as to how to leave the premises, but I was
not allowed to, at first. Later on they allowed me to leave the room." A
journalist, who wanted to remain anonymous, stated: "I have never
experienced such violent act and if the price of freedom is my life, then I
will pay the price.'

» (E) Coalition Victory in Australia
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/18/2001 | Politics | Unrated
The victory of the Liberal/National Party Coalition in Australia has been
acknowledged, for a third term, in a victory speech tonight by the Hon. John
Howard. I am sure that I am not alone amongst most Croatian people in
congratulating him, and hope that the Croatian community in Australia can do
its utmost to develop good relations with members of the Coalition.

The victory of the Coalition in Australia will help to assure that the
Coalition Against Terror in the world remains on a steady, united foundation,
and in addition, it will assure that there is a balanced power sharing
coexistence amongst democratic nations.

In addition, the failure to win the seat of Calwell Victoria Australia by the
independent Dr. A. Theophanous (former ALP-Socialist-Left faction) should
come as a wake up call for the Croatian community leaders in Melbourne
Australia. For far too long Croatian lobbyists in Australia, at least in
Victoria, have been openly supporting only the opposition to the elected
government. How can this be in the best interests of Croatia, or HDZ?

regards to everyone,
Jean W. Marinovic.

» (E) Istria is in Croatia. Does our Croatian government think that
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/18/2001 | Politics | Unrated
Istria is in Croatia, yes. Most of us who are from Istria are Croatians.
Does our Croatian government think that? If it does, why than don't they hire
istrians to visible and important positions within Croatian government? Why
was there not one istrian here in the United States of America, in the past
10 years, who held the position of Croatian Ambassador or Croatian Consul? I
do not think that they have on their promises even cleaning ladies who are
istrians, maybe one or two secretaries in 10 years in the whole USA. Maybe.
Maybe is time for us Croatian Americans to do something about this?

» (E) Jasenovac in the NY Times
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/18/2001 | Politics | Unrated
This appeared in yesterday's NY Times. We should all congratulate Mr.

Maras of the Croatian embassy for speaking up at the press conference.

Also, note how this article desribes Jasenovac being set up by the

"Republic of Croatia." It is also "one of the . . . most brutal camps"

of WWII (one wonders how anyone can determine that).

I think this article again points to what I have been urging: that the

Croatian govt must obtain a PR firm to deal with these kinds of issues.

This story, for ex., should have been "spinned" as how the bad Serbs

stole items from Jasenovac and took them to Banja Luka. Moreover, I

have read some estimates concerning the large number of ethnic Croat

victims at the camp (among others, Vladko Macek was a prisoner there for

some period of time). This was recognized in the press release of the

US Holocaust Museum but not in this story. That is something that

should have been emphasized as well and, again, a PR firm would have

known how to have done that.

Further, the most authoritative numbers that I read, compiled by Ivo

Goldstein, show approx. 80,000 victims - here again, presumably for

dramatic effect, Museum officials upped the number by 20,000, or 25%.

Based on my past experience, we can argue till we're blue in the face

that the number was overstated without convincing the newspapers.

I also note the article states that 300,000 Serbs died throughout

Croatia. This is inaccurate as this number also includes, I beleive,

those who died in BH as well. Mr. Maras' points are well taken - this

number includes combatants (i.e., Chetniks and Partisans).

Moreover, as we all know, President Mesic was in Israel 2 weeks ago and

as far as I am aware a story about his visit appeared in only one

American paper, the LA Times, and in no Jewish-American publications (at

least not yet). Presumably, a PR firm would have handled the story in

such a manner to assure greater coverage of that event.

I will share one point which caused me some concern during my meeting

with President Mesic and Foreign Minister Picula. At least one member

of the delegation did not beleive me when I said that the Croatian flag

was consistently presented as a fascist/Ustashe flag in the US press.

The argument was that if that were the case neither Israel nor the US

would allow such a flag to be flown.

This was a major point made by American and UK reporters during the war

years. As we saw in the LA Times article, this continues to be a

problem. The answer to this issue is very simple - the "sahovnica" coat

of arms was also used by the Communists as part of the coat of arms of

the SR Croatia. There's no way the Communists would have allowed a

supposedly fascist symbol to be used.

Documenting a Death Camp in Nazi Croatia

By NEIL A. LEWIS

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 - Officials of the United States Holocaust Museum

said today that they had discovered and preserved a cache of decaying

documents and artifacts from one of the lesser-known but most brutal

concentration camps of World War II. The camp, known as Jasenovac, was

operated in Croatia by the Ustasha, the Nazi puppet government.

The artifacts were found deteriorating in a building in Banja Luka in

the Serbian part of Bosnia last year, officials said.

Peter Black, the museum's chief historian, told reporters today that

Jasenovac was crude in comparison to the industrialized Nazi

extermination camps like Auschwitz. Mr. Black said there were no gas

chambers or crematories, so prisoners were murdered one by one with

axes, guns, knives or prolonged torture. Bodies were buried or thrown

into the adjacent Sava River.

Jasenovac (pronounced ya-SEN- oh-vatz), actually a complex of five camps

about 60 miles from the Croatian capital, Zagreb, has been little

studied in the West, but the history has long resonated in the modern

Balkans, where analysts and historians have debated about how much of

the region's violence may be traced to historic ethnic enmities.

Mr. Black estimated that nearly 100,000 people had been killed in

Jasenovac, the largest number being Serbs, followed by Jews and Gypsies.

The camp was established by the Republic of Croatia to eliminate anyone

who was not an ethnic Croatian. Mr. Black said a combination of factors,

including the reluctance of officials to agree on what happened, had led

to its history's remaining largely hidden from scholars until now.

The collection includes 2,000 photographs, many of atrocities; tens of

thousands of papers; and thousands of artifacts, like inmate crafts.

Sara J. Bloomfield, director of the Holocaust Museum, said the project

to save the documents and artifacts was especially significant because

of the cooperation of the government of Croatia, whose history is cast

in a poor light, as well as the governments of Serbia and Bosnia. Ms.

Bloomfield said the governments had cooperated despite "the continuing

sensitivity of all sides to this collection."

That sensitivity was on display moments after the museum's presentation

today when a diplomat from Croatia, Mate Maras, objected to the

assertion by museum officials that more than 300,000 Serbs had died at

the hands of the Ustasha throughout Croatia in World War II.

Mr. Maras complained to Ms. Bloomfield and Mr. Black that the number was

misleading because it included what he said were combatants throughout

Croatia and thus was comparable to the hundreds of thousands of Croats

killed in the war.

Mr. Maras said that while he thought the assertions of the museum's

personnel about Serb casualties were misleading, he agreed it was "a

good day for Croatia to open up these sad pages of our history."

Copies of the collection have been made and will be maintained at the

Holocaust Museum and in Israel, officials said. The original collection

will be returned to a museum in Croatia, where it will be put on display

at the site of the Jasenovic complex, officials said.

» (E) VJEZBA AMERICKE I HRVATSKE RATNE MORNARICE
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/18/2001 | Politics | Unrated
ZAVRSENA VJEZBA AMERICKE I HRVATSKE RATNE MORNARICE

ROGOZNICA, 14. studenoga - Nakon sto je zbog nevremena odgodjena u utorak,
hrvatsko-americka pomorska vojna vjezba SURFEX 2001. odrzana je u srijedu u
vodama od otoka Zirja do Drvenika. Kapetan bojnog broda Marin Stosic,

americki ratni brod USS Ross. U drugom dijelu izveden je kombiniran
raketno-zrakoplovno-topnicki udar na krijumcarski brod. U trecem dijelu bilo
je predvidjeno zajednicko bojno gadjanje hrvatskih i americkih pomorskih
snaga. No, to nije uspjelo jer se u dva pokusaja ispuhala pokretna meta
"Tomatokiller" za koju su bili zaduzeni Amerikanci. Ipak, istaknuo je Stosic,
uspjesnosu provedene pripreme za bojno gadjanje, a rekao je da ne zna zasto
je zakazala pokretna meta. Vjezbom je zapovijedao americki casnik, kapetan
bojniog broda Kevin Quinn, dok mu je zamjenik bio kapetan Stosic. "Hrvatska
je zahvaljujuci i ovoj vjezbi korak dalje u ispunjavanju NATO-ovih
standarda", rekao je Allen Robert Joseph, kapetan korvete i americki vojni
izaslanik u Hrvatskoj.

» (E) From jail to presidency bid
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/18/2001 | Politics | Unrated
INTERVIEW-Brovina goes from jail to Kosovo presidency bid
By Fredrik Dahl

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Just over a year ago, Flora Brovina
was in a grim Serbian prison. Now she is campaigning to become president of
Kosovo.

And the ethnic Albanian human rights activist, doctor and poet is delivering
a message of tolerance and co-existence, of reconciliation rather than
revenge.

Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority hopes, and many minority Serbs fear, that a
general election on Saturday will move the U.N.-governed Yugoslav province
closer to independence.

Brovina, candidate of the Democratic Party of Kosovo of former guerrilla
leader Hashim Thaci, makes clear independence is also her aim but vows to try
and break down ethnic barriers if elected, saying Kosovo belongs to all its
people.

"I personally insist that all citizens must be equal and not divided into a
first and a second class," she told Reuters, using words which are in tune
with international officials hoping the vote will foster a more multi-ethnic
Kosovo.

Arrested during NATO's 1999 bombing to end Belgrade's repression of Kosovo's
Albanians, Brovina was convicted of associating with separatist guerrillas
and jailed for 12 years on terrorism charges in a trial widely condemned as a
sham.

She was released after the fall of Slobodan Milosevic as Yugoslav president
in a popular revolt last year.

APPEAL TO SERBS

Brovina has urged Kosovo's beleaguered Serbs to cast their ballots for the
new 120-seat assembly to be set up after the November 17 election, which in
turn will elect a president, arguing the vote is a great opportunity for them
too.

"Serbs are citizens of Kosovo and they have to be part of Kosovo," Brovina,
blonde, elegantly dressed in black and showing no trace of her difficult 19
months in jail, said in an interview late on Monday.

Popular among many Kosovo Albanians, she will still face an uphill struggle
in the race for the largely symbolic post of president against veteran
political leader Ibrahim Rugova.

Brovina insisted that despite her time in prison and atrocities committed agai
nst her people, she did not seek revenge. Serbs too were victims of
Milosevic, she said.

Many Serbs oppose the vote, arguing it will be a step to independence for
Kosovo and also that their living conditions are so miserable they should
boycott the poll in protest.

Brovina said independence was inevitable, a "life or death" issue for Kosovo,
but she said it would be positive for Serbs as well as it would lead to
better times for the impoverished economy.

Fearing Albanian reprisals, about 180,000 Serbs fled Kosovo after government
forces withdrew following 11 weeks of NATO bombing. Many of those remaining,
numbering about 100,000, live in enclaves protected by heavily armed NATO-led
peacekeepers.

Brovina, 51, vowed to fight such "ghettos."

"An independent Kosovo will guarantee the minorities equality," she said.

But Brovina accused Belgrade's new leadership of continuing to manipulate the
province's Serbs.

Milosevic may be awaiting trial at the U.N. war crimes court in The Hague for
atrocities in Kosovo, but "Milosevic's system is still in power in Belgrade,"
she said.
