Croatian-born writer Josip Novakovich will give a public 
reading at Pennsylvania State University. Arriving—most 
recently—from St. Petersburg and New York City, 
Novakovich is the new addition to the fiction side of 
Penn State’s Master's of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) program.

Public Radio's (NPR) program called "Selected Shorts" 
will broadcast Novakovich's short story "A Whale's 
Throat" read by Jerry Orbach from Novakovich's 
book "Salvation and Other Disasters" (Graywolf Press). 
 
Novakovich is the winner of the O.Henry prize, the most 
prestigious American award in short fiction, awarded to 
just 20 American short stories yearly. His list of 
credentials includes having been awarded a Guggenheim 
Fellowship. 
 
His books include Salvation and Other Disasters: Short 
Stories (Graywolf, May 1998), Apricots from Chernobyl: 
Narratives (Graywolf, April 1995), Yolk: Short Stories 
(Graywolf, September 1995), Writing Fiction Step by Step 
(Story, July 1998), Fiction Writer's Workshop (Writers 
Digest Books, April 1995 and February 1998). He also co- 
edited Stories in the Stepmother Tongue with Robert 
Shapard (White Pine, September 2000).
