» (E) Berkeley and Croatian Language - NEEDS your letter
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 03/28/2002 | Media Watch | Unrated

Dear All,

I will send few letters like this. Please send your letter to the email address or snail mail or call them. One doesn't exclude the other. Remember that if we do not do it, nobody will. So far, we are successful in almost every attempt. We need 30 letters and things will change. And if not we need another 50... As LONG AS IT TAKES. But do not wait for someone else to do it. YOU do it. Sample letter, you can find in the CROWN library under Letters to Editors. I'll publish more letters like this for you to have more choices. Few words count. Everything counts !

best,

Languages: We teach Russian at all levels (through eight semesters) and a number of other languages of Slavic peoples and their neighbors. On a regular basis, we offer four semesters of instruction in other languages of Central Europe: Polish, Serbian/Croatian, Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, along with courses in English translation on the literature of these peoples. On an occasional basis, we teach other non-Slavic languages of importance to East Europe and West Asia.

» (E) UCLA - Slavic Languages

Mr. Michael Heim
Slavic Languages and Literature Faculty
115 Kinsey Hall
UCLA,
Los Angeles, CA

Dear Mr. Heim:

We noticed with dismay that the UCLA Library still uses the definition
"Serbo-Croat" as a language at the Slavic Languages Faculty. Please note
that the Croatian language existed already when the Croats (not Serbs)
arrived in present day Croatia in the seventh century, long before
Yugoslavia, - comprising Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia, - was established
after WWI. The dominating Serbs imposed on Croatians the so-called
"Serbo-Croatian" which did not exist as a language before. The Croatian
and Serbian languages are similar, but not the same in many aspects.
There were Serb words that were forced into the Croatian language, but
these have been abandoned since the breakup .

We respectfully urge you to separate the two languages at the Slavic
Languages section in the Library and at the Faculty. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dear All,

This is another example where the letter for the right definition of our language should be sent. Also in this letter you can find this amazing possibility to translate Croatian into major languages and vice versa. Please check this out.

There should be a team of people in Croatian National Library, who should just go and search places where they write things that are incorrect and correct them.

1, Please right a polite letter to this company and ask them to change their definition of Croatian language.
2. Check one of the CDs. Do they do the job?

best,

Nenad

Introduction
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Croatian is that form of Serbo-Croatian spoken by Yugoslavia's Croatian population and written in the Roman alphabet. Except for their scripts, Croatian and Serbian are really the same language, though a slightly different intonation or the use of a certain word will sometimes indicate whether one is a Serb or a Croat. For the word "train" the Serbs generally say voz as against Croatian viak, while for "dance" the Serbs prefer igra and the Croatians pies. For "music" the Serbs say muzika as against Croatian glazba, while for "theater" there is Serbian pozoriste and Croatian kazaliste. In each casc, however, both alternatives are understood perfectly well by everyone.

In these utilities, the meaning or meanings of words or phrases are looked up automatically as the software moves through the text. Automatic or 'Machine' translation will go through the entire text or document, without stopping. Some applications will maintain the document formatting, some support OLE or clipboard translation. Goalless Croatian and Slovenian preparation for World Cup

ZAGREB, Croatia, March 27 (DSA) - Second consecutive goalless draw in friendly matches causes worry for the Croatian national team. Today Croats drew with Slovenia in a friendly.
''I could tell that this game was more solid than the one against Bulgaria in February'', commented Croatian national coach Mirko Jozic as both, Croatia and Slovenia realized Wednesday's match as serious test before World Cup in Korea and Japan.
Possession of ball goes 53% to 47% in favor of Croats, but very confident Slovenians did not give much of chances to their opponents confirming they want to be very fit before World Cup debut.
There were almost no chances for both sides as two teams played sure in defense. Hosts Croatia waited till 44th minute of the first half for a header of Bayer Leverkusen Boris Zivkovic. Robert Jarni of Panathinaikos assisted well, but Zivkovic's ball passed close to the bar. Similar situation was observed in the second half. Croats dominated the game, but did not succeed to score. Slovenians did it three times, but that was rather a good exercise for Croatian goalkeeper Tomislav Butina.
Croatian first division leading scorer Ivica Olic had a good chance in 76th minute. Davor Vugrinec of Lecce assisted with a ball in empty space, however, Olic did not manage to keep it in an open route to Slovenian goal.
Both teams took a friendly very seriously, so there was a lot of tension, too. That reduced chances for a play that would cheer up the crowd of some 9000. Therefore 6000 hosting fans and 3000 Slovenians were teasing each other for most of the match. Some slight incidents on a tribune were however prevented by the police.
"Hope we will finally score in our next friendly with Bosnia and Herzegovina'', revealed Croatian national team star Davor Suker. After a long period Munich 1860 striker Suker started a match from the beginning playing as a forward together with Middlesbrough's Alen Boksic.

» (E) TONIGHT on TV landmine awareness on WEST WING

Dear Roots of Peace Supporters,

Please watch this week's episode on THE WEST WING, as it features the dilemma of the landmine issue. This popular show is poised to raise national landmine awareness on this humanitarian issue.

The attached e-mail from our Advisory Board Member Jerry White depicts further details. Please forward this information to your constituents. Thank you.

From: Globalvision
FROM ROOTS OF PEACE: WATCH WEST WING TONIGHT

During my brief sabbatical from this log, I stopped in Northern
California to meet with an exceptional woman and an exiting new peace
initiative called ROOTS OF PEACE. This group was the brainchild of a
San Rafael mom and former journalist named Heidi Kuhn who has
mobilized her community behind a campaign to remove land mines that
menace millions world wide. Heidi has found support from 400
California vintners and Wine Companies under the slogan "MINES INTO
VINES." It is a impressive undertaking that is already working at
reclaiming land in the war torn areas of Croatia. It is a fabulous
organizing model linking private, public and community institutions.
Heidi writes this morning to urge Americans at least to watch the
popular prime time dramatic series on NBC, WEST WING. It is on
tonight:

"Tune in to The West Wing on Wednesday, March 27. President Bartlet
is confronted by a challenge to his leadership: will he step up to
ban landmines and save thousands of innocent lives? In the time it
takes to watch the show, somewhere in the world, 3 people

"will step on a landmine. Some will lose arms and legs and others will die.

"The Poet Laureate of America visits The West Wing and tries to
persuade Bartlet to join the ban. In real life our President needs to
hear from YOU.

"The Bush administration is currently reviewing the United States
policy on landmines, and a decision on this review is imminent. This
is a historic opportunity for President Bush to courageously lead our
country to a mine-safe world by banning landmines today.

"Send President Bush an email. Time is running out. Let President
Bush know that you believe landmines do more harm than good on the
modern battlefield."

Interesting isn't that an entertainment show is raising this issue
while news programs and documentary series ignore it! That's a
comment on media if there ever was one.
