Libertas Foundation Fundraiser

Dear Friends,

On January 31, 2004, another Gala Dinner/Fundraising and celebration of Sveti Vlaho - St. Blaise, Patron Saint of Dubrovnik is coming. Mark your calendar and reserve this evening for fabulous Croatian food, dances, music and friendship.
To commemorate our 13th anniversary at St. Anthony's Croatian Center in Los Angeles, Libertas Foundation will publish a program and souvenir book. We invite you and all Croatian-American businesses, organizations and their friends to help in our fundraising effort by placing an ad, greeting, letter, poem, recipe or anything that may be interesting for our Souvenir Book.
This event is a sell out every year -- we anticipate over 450 people from the Greater Los Angeles area to attend our "festa", which has become one of the premiere events in the Croatian- American community of Southern California. The souvenir book will be distributed to all attendees and advertisers, giving you and your business tremendous exposure and recognition.
We are pleased to report that our scholarship fund, which awards financially challenged students money to attend local trade schools, awarded five deserving students $1000 each in Dubrovnik this past August. The names of the students are: Stijepo Mage, Josip Kurelja, Ivan Zec, Miso Tepsic and Jozo Cupic.
Another project which we supported alongside the Rotary Club, Wheelchair Foundation and the Croatian community was the donation of 240 wheelchairs. These wheelchairs were delivered and distributed to needy people all over Croatia in August and September of this year.
Currently we continue to raise funds to help the needy people of Knin. Flour is one essential item that is greatly needed by these people. By buying flour from local Croatian farmers and donating it to the people, we help not only the less fortunate but also the Croatian farming community.
Though we have all accomplished and contributed generously, we are continuing with these programs as long as there is need for it and ask for your help and support in any way to make these programs most beneficial to the needy people of Croatia.
We thank all of you that have helped in the past and hope you will continue to support our humanitarian projects. Since we are all volunteers, we can assure you that every dollar you donate will reach the people and charity of your choice.
The holidays are around the corner. At this time of joy and celebration let's remember our less fortunate brothers and sisters and share the joy of Christmas with them.
Please send your tax deductible donation as soon as possible so that we can buy and send the food to Knin by Christmas.
Your generosity and continued support is greatly appreciated.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

SRETAN BOZIC I NOVA GODINA!

» (E) French Donated 25K E for the Children of Land-Mine Victims

French Government Donated 25,000 EUR for the Children

of Land-Mine Victims

Ivana Novakova

08 December 2003

Children and mines
The French Ambassador to Zagreb, Francois Bellanger and the De-mining Advisor to the Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dijana Plestina, signed the agreement for cooperation between the MINE AID NGO and the Republic of France. On the basis of that agreement, the French side donated 25,000 EUR to the Regional Centre for Psycho-Social Rehabilitation of the Victims of Land-Mines in Rovinj. The money will be used to finance the work of the Centre that should be opened in Spring 2004. Having in mind the fact that this is the first institution of its type in the world, the children of the victims of land-mines from Croatia, the region, but also the world, will receive treatment at the Centre.

This is not the first donation to the future Centre, and it is added to the total of over 700,000 EUR collected so far through grants and donations. The donors' list includes the Governments of Norway, Italy, Luxembourg and Japan, as well as numerous companies and institutions from Croatia and the world.

Countries like B&H, Albania, Nepal, Iraq and Colombia already expressed their interest for sending children to the Centre. The plans for the Centre are for it to be open throughout the year, and it will host about 40 participants per shift. The children in Rovinj will have a chance to use workshops, gatherings and relief techniques as means for their psychosocial rehabilitation. The French donation will be used to set-up a room adapted to children with special needs which will host 6 to 8 visitors of the Centre, said Ms. Plestina.

During the official signing, the French Ambassador expressed his pleasure at the fact that his country could participate in such a project. He emphasized that France has maintained good cooperation with the Croatian De-Mining Centre and it assisted the de-mining of the agricultural land in Slavonija.

Croatian TV for sale or partnership - Forbes Magazine

Murdoch, Lauder bid for private Croatian TV channel
Reuters, 12.04.03, 7:20 AM ET

ZAGREB, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Croatia's only private TV station with a national broadcasting concession is in strategic partnership talks with several world-wide media conglomerates, its chief executive, Ivan Blazicko, said on Thursday.

Nova TV's shareholders are in talks with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.<NCP.AX> (nyse: NWS - news - people), U.S. businessman Ronald Lauder's Central European Media Enterprises (nasdaq: NWS - news - people) and several other foreign media companies, Blazicko told Reuters.

"Nova TV is not for sale," he said. "All interested parties we've talked to are potential strategic partners, not buyers" he added, but declined to name potential investors other than the two singled out by the local media.

Both News Corp and CME had run unsuccesfully in the race for the state television's third channel, which was sold to Germany's RTL <AUDKt.BR> in September. RTL plans to launch its programming under the name HRTL early next year.

"This will significantly change the situation on the market and a lot will have to be invested into Nova TV," Damir Vujinovic, one of Nova TV's directors, recently said.

Nova TV's viewer rating has significantly increased in the last few months, after it launched a music contest for local wannabe singers, which has since developped a devout following in the country of 4.4 million people.

According to local media speculation, the starting price for the station was put at between 20 and 25 million euros ($30 and million), but Blazicko said that was far too low.

"We invest between 10 and 12 million euros per year in programming alone," he said.

RTL has pledged to invest some 30 million euros in marketing and programming in the first year, and market insiders say the new owner of Nova TV would have to do the same if it wished to remain competitive.

"The young brave entrepreneurs also have come. It is crucial for us to be close with our friends when they are undergoing hard times. We are here for this. I hope there will not be a time when we will not be able to give support to our friends," added Dunseath, and his remarks were applauded by the crowd in attendance.

Dunseath also said that those who organized this final had achieved something great. The fact that a global competition with representatives from 11 countries, including Turkey, was held in Istanbul was a sign of confidence in Turkey said Dunseath.

Bernard Wash from Ireland won the competition thanks to the beverage named 'Hot Jamaican Superior Calypso Coffee' he began marketing in 1999. Walsh received his award from deputy prime minister and state minister Mehmet Ali Sahin.

Nuray Karalar, who represented Turkey, was awarded the Business Planning Award. Milen Ivanov from Bulgaria won the Modernity Awardl; Lee Ching-Kang from Taiwan the Perfection in the Administration Award; Alexey P. Sitnikov from Russia the Perfection in Communication Award; and Geza Nagy from Hungary the Social Responsibility Award. The International Success Award was given to Professor Predrag Vujovic from Croatia.

The contest was realized with the help of Dunya Newspaper and Global Advertising.

Energy infrastructure set to deregulate

Balkan countries set to deregulate energy

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Balkan countries agreed Monday to deregulate their energy markets starting in mid-2004 and allow each other's utilities access to infrastructure.

In a deal signed in Athens, ministers from Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey, agreed to follow the European Union's model allowing competition into previously state-dominated, regulated markets.

EU Energy Commissioner Loyola de Palacio called the step "momentous" and said EU governments soon will begin discussing plans to link the Balkan energy grid with the main EU one, de Palacio added.

The EU's head office sees energy integration a way of lending stability to the region which is slowly recovering from a decade of ethnic strife.

"We should not forget the political basis for the European Union: It is to prevent war. I am not alone in thinking that something similar may be emerging here in Southeast Europe," de Palacio said.

EU governments decided last July to accelerate energy deregulation within the trade bloc. From July, businesses across the EU will be free to choose their supplier. Three years later, households will get the choice.

Southeast European countries want to adhere to the same timeframe, although officials concede technical barriers may cause delays.

The program will include an overhaul of charges for access to gas pipelines and electricity grids so that companies have equal access to infrastructure.

Allegany tips off season tonight
Trojans host Rockland, N.Y.; seek 31st straight victory in home opener

Steve Luse
Sports Writer

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany College of Maryland Trojans will be looking to win the school’s home opener for the 31st straight year when they host SUNY Rockland Community College of Suffern, N.Y. tonight. Tipoff is 7 o’clock.

The Trojans are opening their 33rd season under head coach Bob Kirk, who is second on the NJCAA all-time wins list with 896 victories and only 173 losses for a winning percentage of .838.

The last loss in a home opener was in Kirk’s second season when the Trojans lost to Catonsville, 79-71, to start the 1973-74 campaign.

Allegany won the Maryland JUCO Conference regular-season and playoff titles last year before being upset by Garrett College, 55-52 in overtime, in the Region XX championship game to finish with a 27-3 record. The Trojans were ranked No. 8 in the final NJCAA Division I poll.

Despite losing four starters, Allegany continues to draw pre-season recognition based on the reputation of the program. The Trojans are No. 16 in the NJCAA Coaches Poll, and 17th in Street and Smith Magazine.

The only returning starter from last year’s team is 6-foot-3 point guard Sterling Ledbetter of Laurel. The other returning sophomores are Dwayne Shackleford of Washington, D.C.; Winston Robinson of Knoxville, Tenn.; Mike Castro of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Matthew Dent of Monessen, Pa.

Among the seven freshmen is former Bishop Walsh High Schoolforeign exchange student Alex Krstic of Pazin, Croatia, who was a first-team Times-News All-Area selection last season.

The other newcomers are Tyrone Beale of Silver Spring; Jerome Petticolas of Washington, D.C.; Eric Bigby of Meade; Jeremy Eck of Stafford, Va.; James Russo of Baltimore and Joshua Thomas of Hampton, Va.

The Trojans rolled over Rockland, 83-39, in last season’s opener and has won both meetings with the Hawks. The other win was 99-41 two years ago.

Rockland had a 16-14 record last season under head coach Rob Kurzinsky and finished fifth in the Region XV Tournament.

The Hawks have already played two games, falling to Passaic County, N.J., 81-58; and Monroe College of the Bronx, N.Y., 93-54.

Kenny Amparo, a 6-foot-5 sophomore and the only returning starter, had 18 points and 14 rebounds against Monroe after scoring 13 points in the opener. John Yonaaco added 10 points against Monroe and Ty Della Monica had 12 against Passaic.

It will be Beall High School and AYSO and JCP Soccer Night. Autumn Smith will sing the National Anthem, and the Beall High Belles will perform at halftime.

Anyone affiliated with Beall High School and all youths from the AYSO and JCP league wearing a team shirt will be admitted free with their families.
