» Professor Mladen Vranić, outstanding Croatian scientist in Canada

Distinguished researcher and educator in medical sciences (endocrinology and metabolism) and former chair of physiology, where 85 years ago insulin was discovered. He earned the title of Honorary Medical Doctor from Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Mime Cuvalo, on the photo with small Stipo Adzaip, is a young Croatian web developer and proponent of open web standards. He is currently employed at three jobs: YouTube/Google, finishing up FireFTP, and creating the online music database The Rock Hard Times. His "charityware" FireFTP has been downloaded over 4.5 million times!

Zadar (pictured left) will be the host of a symposium from 28 to 30 January 2008, where participants will talk about barriers to accessing information, whether they are political, social, economic or technical, and then come up with ways to break through them. The keynote speaker will be Professor Ana Marušić MD, PhD, and Editor of the Croatian Medical Journal.

Zvonimir Janko, professor of mathematics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, is a well known expert in the theory of finite groups. His discovery in 1964 of the group now called the first Janko group in his honour, launched the modern theory of sporadic groups. We wish him a happy 75th birthday! And a happy 100th birthday to his father in Bjelovar, Croatia!

Professor Silvija Gradečak, with diploma in physics, University of Zagreb, Croatia, 1999, is employed at MIT, USA. Her research focuses on nano-photonics and electronics. She explores novel optoelectronic applications such as nanoscale light-emitting sources, single photon sources, or nanowire lasers.

The Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes for Health organized the public presentation of the largest coordinated publishing effort in medicine - Global Theme Issue on Poverty and Human Development.  At the NIH presentation, the lead speaker was Professor Ana Marusic, editor of the CMJ and current president of the Council of Science Editors.
