Professor Mladen Bestvina, on the photo with his wife Cynthia, is associate editor of the Annals of Mathematics since 2006, one of the most prestigious mathematical journals in the world. He completed his studies of mathematics at the University of Zagreb before he moved to the USA. Professor Bestvina is distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Utah.  Croatian Medieval Poetry, written by Amir Kapetanović, Dragica Malić and Kristina Štrkalj Despot, is the first complete chrestomathy and monograph of Croatian medieval texts written in verse during the period of 14th-16th centuries, in Old Latin, Croatian Glagolitic and Croatian Cyrillic scripts. Publishing this amazing book by the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics is a great event for Croatian culture. It has nearly 1000 pages.

The 2010 Wieland Prize went to Croatian scientist Professor Nenad Ban of the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biophysics of the ETH Zurich for his definition of the molecular structures of fatty acid synthases (FAS) in fungi and mammals, the molecular assembly lines for lipid production. His great achievement now allows a precise understanding of how these large, complex biological machines function.

  Dragica Martinis (January 19, 1922 - October 8, 2010), better kown as Carla Martinis, was born in  Croatia in a small village of Dančulovići in the region of Žumberak west of Zagreb, near the town of Sošice. An Austrian newpapers proclaimed her to be an "acoustic miracle". Herbert von Karajan chose her to have the role of Aida in 1951 for the solemn concert organized on the occasion of 50 years since the death of Giuseppe Verdi.

Australian-born Simone Young, of Croatian mother and Irish father, is a conductor who has succeeded in a highly competitive, male-dominated field. Her career as a conductor was launched at the Sydney Opera House in 1985. In 2001 she took up a position as musical director of the Australian Opera and in 2005 she was appointed general director of the Hamburg State Opera.
