» Luka Sulic Croatian cellist wins the first prize in Warszaw, Poland 2009

Croatian cellist Luka Šulić (1987) is the First Prize winner of the Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition held in February 2009 in Warsaw. This very prestigious biannual competition, whose Honorary President during his lifetime was legendary Mstislav Rostropovich, attracted some forty cellists from all over the world.  Luka also won special prize for the best performance of Lutoslawski's Sacher Variation

Dr. Charles Béné, a retired professor from the University of Grenoble, France, is a European authority on 16th century literature. He studied various aspects literary works of Marko Marulić, Croatian Renaissance writer, and his discourses were published in distinguished European magazines. He has also studied other Croatian writers of the Humanism and Renaissance movements.

Prof. Dr. Goran Šimić from the University of Zagreb won the award for his discovery of the spinal muscular - atrophy mechanism and, due to that, has been acclaimed as the world's best neuropathologist in 2008. The "Kurt Jellinger Prize" is awarded by one of the world's leading magazines specialising in neuropathology, "Acta Neuropathologica."  Šimić is also the first Croatian scientist whose picture has appeared on the cover of the journal.

"The Banker" magazine, which is one of the publications of a group of the most influential European newspaper, "The Financial Times", bestowed on the governor of the Croatian National Bank, Zeljko Rohatinski (left), two awards for the past year - the best governor of Europe and the best central bank governor of the world in 2008.

The principal role of the Croatian Cultural Club in Zagreb is the advancement of Croatian culture at home and internationally. The Club provides incentives and works on implementation of various programmes related to creation of works of arts, organises lectures, recitals, exhibitions and conferences. The Club has been founded by Šime Šimatović on the photo.
» Stjepan Hauser double winner at international music competition in Italy

On December 5th, 2008 Stjepan Hauser won two first prizes at the International Music Competition "Francesco Forgione" in Verbania, Italy near Milano. He won 100 points out of 100 and became absolute winner in two different categories (Solo and Solo with Orchestra). A part of the prize includes 70 concerts in Italy.

An injured eagle owl was brought to the Falconry centre near Šibenik, Croatia, with its wings badly damaged. Under carefully measured anaesthetic,  30 damaged feathers have been changed with new feathers. The operation was done by Emilio Menđušić, director of the centre (on the photo). The resulting film prepared by Hrvoje Gunjača was awarded by CNN.

Valentina Golubenko and Ivan Šarić are world youth chess champions for 2008, at the competition organized in Vietnam. With two gold medals and one bronze, Croatia is ranked third at the World Competition, after India and Vietnam, and before China, Russia, USA, Germany etc. Congratulations from the CROWN!
