Special prize for the best performance of Lutoslawski's Sacher Variations also goes to Luka

Croatian cellist Luka Šulić (1987) is the First Prize winner of the Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition held last week in Warsaw, Poland. This very prestigious biannual competition, whose Honorary Chairman  of the Jury during his lifetime was legendary Mstislav Rostropovich, attracted some forty cellists from all over the world. Luka shared the first prize with Philip Higham of the UK

Among the semifinalists was another Croatian, Kajana Pačko, making the Croatian presence even more noteworthy. Four finalists, chosen by the eminent international jury, performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by maestro Krzysztof Urbański.

Luka's brilliant interpretation of Schumann Cello Concerto impressed both the jury and the audience and brought him First Prize. In addition to that, Luka was awarded the Special Prize for the best performance of Lutoslawski's Sacher Variations.

This huge success came after a steady stream of top prizes that Luka won over the years participating in important international competitions. He has also presented many recitals all over Europe and Japan, and appeared as a soloist with renowned orchestras such as Zagreb Philharmonic, Slovenian Philharmonic, Slovak Philharmonic, Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and Russian Symphony Orchestra. Twice he represented Croatia at the Vladimir Spivakov Foundation Concerts in Moscow featuring the best young talents from all over the world.

His debut at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival in 2005 was yet another great success.  Luka presently studies with Reinhard Latzko at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, after having graduated from the Zagreb Academy of Music, where he studied with Valter Dešpalj.

Jedan od najvećih uspjeha hrvatskog violončelizma

LUKI ŠULIĆU I. NAGRADA U VARŠAVI
