» (E) City boy makes it big - Better Humor Than Tumor
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 07/11/2002 | Humor And Wisdom | Unrated

A city boy, Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day.

The next day the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the donkey died."

Kenny replied, "Well then, just give me my money back."

The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already."

Kenny said, "OK then, at least give me the donkey."

The farmer asked, "What ya gonna do with him?"

Kenny, "I'm going to raffle him off."

Farmer, " You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"

Kenny, "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he is dead."

A month later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "What happened with that dead donkey?"

Kenny, "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a profit of $998."

Farmer, "Didn't anyone complain?"

Kenny, "Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back."

Kenny grew up and eventually became the Chief Financial Officer of WorldCom and Sat on the board of Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies.

Dalai Lama, in Croatia, Scolds China
Sun Jul 7, 2:10 PM ET

SPLIT, Croatia (AP) - The Dalai Lama said Sunday that if China wants to play an important role globally, it should become a democracy and loosen its hold on Tibet.

"And that's where Tibet sees its chance," the exiled Tibetan leader told reporters in this southern Croatian city, on the second day of his visit to Croatia.

The Dalai Lama is on a four-day visit to Croatia, but the government does not want to see him, evidently trying to avoid problems with China.

While he said he could not foresee when it would be possible for him to return to Tibet, he said: "Time is on Tibet's side."

The Dalai Lama, considered by his supporters both head of state and spiritual leader of Tibet, fled the mountainous region in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese communist rule.

He lives in exile in India and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

The Dalai Lama came to the predominantly Roman Catholic Croatia to the delight of thousands of Croats, who respect him as one of the world's most prominent spiritual leaders.

Tickets for his lectures here have been sold out.

April - August
The Croatian Heritage Museum is pleased to announce the exhibit, "Croatians
in Sports". The exhibit pays tribute to Croatians around the world for their
sports achievements. There are such sports giants as the Kostelics, Sukor,
Ivanisevic, Kukoc, Cosic, Petrovic, as well as American-Croatian sports
heroes; Roger Maris, Mickey Lolich, George Mikan, Fritzie Zivic and many
more. The idea for the exhibit came from the research and record keeping of
Mr. Steve Nekich, of Cleveland. Steve has gathered sports statistics of
Croatians around the world and verified their Croatian roots. This is the
first time that we are aware of that any organization has created a Croatian
sports exhibit. The response has been fantastic with several people offering
info that they had in their procession about Croatian sports figures. We
welcome such donations and encourage others to do the same.

The Museum is located in the American-Croatian Lodge, Cardinal Stepinac,
34900 Lakeshore Blvd, near the intersection of Rte. 91 and Lakeshore Blvd,
Eastlake, Ohio. The Museum is open Friday evenings from 7 PM to 10 PM and
most Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Also special arrangements can be made
for group tours.

And while you are at the Lodge you can plan to enjoy a Croatian meal at
Dubrovnik Garden Restaurant located in the Lodge. For more information

» (E,S) Development Countries, Mini-plants in mobile containers
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 07/11/2002 | Business | Unrated

The Financial News, July 2002

Production Mini-plants in mobile containers. Co-investment Program

"...Science Network will supply to countries and developing regions the technology and the necessary support for the production in series of Mini-plants in mobile containers (40-foot). The Mini-plant system is designed in such a way that all the production machinery is fixed on the platform of the container, with all wiring, piping, and installation parts; that is to say, they are fully equipped... and the mini-plant is ready for production."

More than 700 portable production systems: Bakeries, Steel Nails, Welding Electrodes, Tire Retreading, Reinforcement Bar Bending for Construction Framework, Sheeting for Roofing, Ceilings and Façades, Plated Drums, Aluminum Buckets, Injected Polypropylene Housewares, Pressed Melamine Items (Glasses, Cups, Plates, Mugs, etc.), Mufflers, Construction Electrically Welded Mesh, Plastic Bags and Packaging, Mobile units of medical assistance, Sanitary Material, Hypodermic Syringes, Hemostatic Clamps, etc.

Science Network has started a process of Co-investment for the installation of small Assembly plants to manufacture in series the Mini-plants of portable production on the site, region or country where they may be required. One of the most relevant features is the fact that these plants will be connected to the World Trade System (WTS) with access to more than 50 million raw materials, products and services and automatic transactions for world trade.

Due to financial reasons, involving cost and social impact, the right thing to do is to set up assembly plants in the same countries and regions, using local resources (labor, some equipment, etc.)

Science Network participates with 50% in the investment of each Assembly plant.

MARIO ANCIC

Goran once, Goran twice: Fans sold on young Croatian

By Howard Fendrich
The Associated Press

Op-ed

I am putting this news again, because I want to emphasize howdeep and far goes one Wimbledon victory. How important is our presence in theworld. We are amazing as individuals. Now we have to connect horizontally. Knoweach other.

Nenad Bach

DAVE CAULKIN / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Mario Ancic of Croatia relishes the moment as he defeats Switzerland’s Roger Federer 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in their first-round match at Wimbledon. Federer was seeded seventh in the men’s draw.

WIMBLEDON, England — Even if defending champion Goran Ivanisevic isn't at Wimbledon, his considerable spirit is alive and well in the form of another lanky Croatian: Mario Ancic.

Think of the 18-year-old qualifier as Goran without the goatee — or the self-diagnosed multiple personalities.

Making his Grand Slam debut, the 154th-ranked Ancic produced the tournament's first major upset by dominating No. 7-seeded Roger Federer 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 yesterday on Centre Court.

In his Centre Court debut last year, Federer upset seven-time champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round.

Ancic looks like, talks like and sometimes plays like Ivanisevic, who is home in Croatia after shoulder surgery.

"Goran is Goran, not me. I just knew him for a long time," said Ancic, whose English syntax mirrors that of his mentor. "We are not too much difference, with our temperament."

Just 15 minutes later over on Court 18, another Wimbledon newcomer finished knocking off a top player: 71st-ranked Brazilian Flavio Saretta got by Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson 6-7 (7-2), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 12-10.

Johansson, seeded eighth, lost in the second round of the French Open, and it's increasingly looking as though his first Grand Slam title in 25 tries will be his last.

Other seeded losers were No. 13 Younes El Aynaoui, No. 20 Tommy Robredo, No. 15 Anna Smashnova and No. 28 Paola Suarez, who was beaten by Jill Craybas of the United States.

There were also impressive first-round showings by leading players, including No. 1-seeded Venus Williams and Lleyton Hewitt, along with Monica Seles and Tim Henman.

Williams, trying to be the first woman to win three consecutive Wimbledons since Steffi Graf in 1991-93, dismissed British wild-card entry Jane O'Donoghue 6-1, 6-1. Sister Serena, who plays her second-round match today, watched from a box alongside heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis.

"I just met him today," Venus said.

U.S. Open champion Hewitt constructed a 6-4, 7-5, 6-1 beating of Jonas Bjorkman, who complained Centre Court played too slowly.

Hewitt was quickly installed as the new betting favorite, overtaking Henman despite the Englishman's easy 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 win over Jean-Francois Bachelot.

Seles had the shortest work day of anyone, 37 minutes, dropping only 15 points while smothering Eva Bes of Spain 6-0, 6-0.

The Belgian Brigade of No. 6 Justine Henin, last year's runner-up, and No. 5 Kim Clijsters, a 2001 French Open finalist, also advanced, both beating Americans. Henin had more trouble, needing three sets to eliminate Brie Rippner, while Clijsters stopped Samantha Reeves 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Ancic, like Ivanisevic, is from the Adriatic coast town of Split. They began hitting together when Ancic was 10, were Davis Cup teammates and played doubles at the Sydney Olympics.

"He was always good to me," said Ancic, who got some tips from Ivanisevic in a phone call Monday. "Sometimes I felt like he was bigger brother in tournaments, and I know I can always rely on him. Like yesterday when I call him about tactics."

So, what was the scouting report?

"He told me just, 'He has great forehand, just stay away from him,' " Ancic said.

It certainly worked, before a supportive crowd that included Ivanisevic's father, Srdjan.

Ivanisevic, of course, is one of tennis' great characters, on and off the court.

The right-handed Ancic, 6 feet 4 and 180 pounds, bears a physical resemblance to a younger Ivanisevic, who's a lefty.

Still, Ancic is wary of such comparisons.

"Everybody know that I'm different person. It was all the time since I grew up, they were talking that I am 'Second Goran,' " he said. "No, he's unique."

» (E) Croatian president plans to visit Libya
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 07/5/2002 | Politics | Unrated

President Mesić

Croatian president says he plans to visit Libya

ZAGREB, Croatia - Croatia's president said Monday that he has accepted an invitation from Moammar Gadhafi to visit Libya sometime in the near future.

Stipe Mesic said the invitation was extended during a brief meeting Sunday with Gadhafi's son, Seif el-Islam, was was in Croatia on a private visit.

A date for the visit has not been set yet, Mesic told Croatia's state-run radio.

Mesic said that "good relations" with Libya — the first non-European nation to recognize Croatia as an independent state in early 1992 — should lead to greater economic cooperation.

Mesic refused to comment on the U.S. government's decision to keep Libya on a list of countries it says supports terrorism, stressing that Croatia must act in its own economic interest.

"Croatia's economic interest is to find markets for its goods," he said, adding that doing business with Libya would create thousands of jobs for Croatians.

Mesic, apparently suggesting that Libya is no longer an enemy of the West, emphasized that Gadafi eventually allowed two of its citizens to be tried for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am flight that killed 270 people.

Mesic also said that a recent decision to cancel a dlrs 12 million deal with Iran — also on Washington's list of countries supporting terror — at the request of the United States would have no bearing on future deals with Libya."These are not identical cases," Mesic said.
Mesic's connection to Libya apparently dates back to the 1980s, when he headed an architectural firm that built there. Several construction companies from the former Yugoslavia, which Croatia belonged to until 1991, did business in Libya.

Ivica Račan

Croatian Prime Minister Resigns

By Snjezana Vukic

ZAGREB, Croatia. Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan resigned Friday in a political maneuver apparently aimed at forcing a rival party out of his coalition government.Racan informed his Cabinet ministers that he resigned during a closed government session Friday morning, HINA reported. The resignation triggers the collapse of the 30-month-old governing coalition.
"The fate of the citizens of our country is more important than mine or anyone's political career, and that's why I resigned today," Racan said in a televised address to the nation.
His resignation was triggered by several political disputes with the Social Liberals, the second-largest party in his five-party coalition, he said.
"I admit that the citizens were right in thinking in the past few weeks we devoted too much time to our internal political discussions instead of solving their problems," he said. "Such a behavior endangered everything positive that we have achieved.
"At that moment, I had to say that we cannot work that way any longer."
Racan also said that he was ready to form a new government, in a new composition, "if I get support from the president."
The Liberals' leader, Drazen Budisa, said outside the government building that his party "has now again become a political opposition."
President Stipe Mesic will now nominate a prime minister designate – widely believed to beRacan, who then will have 30 days to form a new Cabinet and get it approved by parliament.
Racan has indicated he plans to form a new government without the Social Liberals by including several smaller parties. Analysts believe that strategy will garner enough votes in parliament to get the new Cabinet approved.
If parliament does not approve the new government, new elections would be called. The current Cabinet will continue its work until a new government is formed, Racan said.
The move is not expected to create a new crisis and could lead to a Cabinet that is more stable than the five-party coalition that in January 2000 replaced the nationalists of the late President FranjoTudjman.
Racan's government has launched political and economic reforms, moving Croatia closer to the European Union and NATO. But its internal fights, particularly between Racan's Social Democrats and Budisa's Liberals, have taken much of their time, slowing down or stymieing the government's work.
The pro-Western government's popularity has eroded with its failure to revive the economy, reduce the 23-percent unemployment rate and improve living standards.

By Nenad N. Bach | Published 07/5/2002 | Politics | Unrated

Ideološka alternativa neoliberalizmu postaje neki novi oblik totalitarizma: društvena i osobna sigurnost dobivaju, i to cak konsenzusom, prednost pred ljudskim pravima.
Uz gospodarske neuspjehe, i u toj cinjenici treba tražiti uzroke sloma lijeve politicke misli diljem Europe.
A kako to danas radimo?

Dear friends,

My name is Ms. Vanja Jurica and I am the president of "Eko Zone - Save
Lastovo", a non-profit environmental agency registered in Lastovo.

We are kindly asking you to help us stop our local authorities from
opening a Rock Quarry on our beautiful island. Please write a letter to
Croatian Ministry/authorities (names and e-mail addresses are detailed
below) to voice your opposition to this project. Time is of the essence
because the Croatian Ministry is expected to approve the "Lastovo Zoning
Plan" this week, and the Rock Quarry Project is "buried" in the fine
print of this plan which was submitted to the Ministry without first
going through the required public hearing and comments process at the
local level.

The Rock Quarry project would allow Microlastovo, a local company, in
cooperation with an Italian company, to purchase, excavate and transport
rocks to Italy, from the southern shore of Lastovo, called Nagojna, which
years ago Lastovo people proposed to be the Nature Park. This will have
a negative environmental/economic impact on the entire island which
measures only 5 by 7 kilometers. If allowed to proceed, the Rock
Quarry Project will:

- create dust and noise pollution which will negatively affect the health of people, and sea and land animals, including a large number of protected species,

- pollute drinking water which is so scarce on the island that water has to be taken from the ground through a desalinization process,

- negatively affect tourism, fishing and property values,

- leave a permanent ugly scar on the island, and

- pollute surrounding islands, including Korcula and Mljet due to constantly changing winds.

The planned Rock Quarry is only about 1 mile from several of the most
beautiful bays on Lastovo and the world, including for example, Skrivena
Luka, where, ironically, only a few years ago, local authorities parceled
the land around the bay, and invested money for a new road, electricity
and telephone service, so that existing and new residents would enjoy
their lives in paradise. Today these residents enjoy living just like
their ancestors have done for centuries, breathing clean air, fishing in
pristine waters, farming on unpolluted land, and making some income
renting their rooms to tourists who are willing to take a 5-hour ferry
ride to enjoy the unspoiled beauty of Lastovo. The peace, quiet,
cleanliness and beauty of Lastovo will all be ruined by opening a Rock
Quarry. This is at a time when other Croatian islands and mainland
locations are shutting down rock quarries.

The following is a short history of events regarding the Rock Quarry, as
the Lastovo people understand it:

- After representatives of an Italian quarry company were turned away by
Korcula and Mljet, they came to Lastovo to request permission to
purchase, excavate and transport rocks to Italy.

- Meanwhile, one of Lastovo's 7 supervisors, Mr. Jancic, registered a
private company, Microlastovo, in his name, in order to work on the Rock
Quarry Project. He also continued working as a City supervisor, and
voting at the City Council meetings which is against the law due to
conflict of interest. Microlastovo asked the City for permission to open
a rock quarry and the majority of the City supervisors rejected the idea.

- In June 2001, Microlastovo asked the City to allow them to do a
feasibility study to determine if the project would be suitable for
Lastovo; the City supervisors approved this request (4 yes, and 3 no
votes).

- At every subsequent monthly City Council meeting, the mayor would not
allow discussion or voting on the Rock Quarry Project, even though some
of the supervisors wanted to discuss it.

- Meanwhile, the mayor of Lastovo submitted the final "Lastovo Zoning
Plan" (which included the Rock Quarry project just recently voted down
by the city council, but somehow no longer includes the Nature Park which
people proposed to be at the same place years ago) to the Croatian
Ministry in Zagreb for approval, without the People of Lastovo's
knowledge and without the required public hearing and comments.

- In June 2002, Microlastovo presented the feasibility study to the City
Council , and City supervisors voted "no" on the "Rock Quarry" Project (5
no, and 2 yes votes, 1 of the yes votes by Mr. Jancic who has an economic
interest in the project).

- More recently, the People of Lastovo found out that the Zoning Plan
includes the Rock Quarry Project, they immediately circulated a Petition
and more than one- half of the Lastovo population signed against the project.

- Various Environmental Agencies and other organizations also are
supporting Lastovo people to stop the "Rock Quarry" project.

- Our organization, "Eko Zona - Save Lastovo" has been writing to the
Ministry asking them to throw out the Rock Quarry Project from the
Lastovo Zoning Plan for the reasons stated above.

Again, the Ministry is supposed to make a final decision and sign the
Lastovo Zoning Plan at the beginning of July 2002. Because time is
short, we kindly urge you to send your e-mail as soon as possible to the
