Croatia storm to World Team title

Saturday, May 27, 2006; Posted: 10:01 a.m. EDT (14:01 GMT)

Stand-in Karlovic's win in the first singles proved vital for Croatia.

DUSSELDORF, Germany -- Croatia dominated the hosts Germany 2-0 to win the 1.85 million euro (2.36 million dollar) ATP World Team Championship for the first time in their history on Saturday in Dusseldorf.

Croatia added the team trophy to the Davis Cup they won last year after crushing holders Germany in a one-sided final.

Singles victory for the giant Ivo Karlovic and tournament star Ivan Ljubicic sealed the victory.

Karlovic, coming in for the injured Mario Ancic, defeated Alexander Waske 7-6 6-4 in the opening singles rubber.

Nicolas Kiefer then had the task of keeping his country in the match but came up well short against Ljubicic.

The 26-year-old Croat, ranked fourth in the world, hardly broke a sweat winning 6-4 6-4 to clinch the crown. The win meant the ensuing doubles match was irrelevant.

The win will certainly boost Ljubicic ahead of his French Open bid at Roland Garros, which begins on Monday.

Croatia clinch World Team title

Karlovic won the opening singles rubber in straight sets
Croatia beat defending champions and hosts Germany 2-0 to seal the ATP World Team Championship for the first time in Duesseldorf on Saturday. Ivo Karlovic, deputising for the injured Mario Ancic, defeated Alexander Waske 7-6 6-4 in the first singles. And Ivan Ljubicic eased past Germany's Nicolas Kiefer 6-4 6-4 in the second rubber to ensure the win.
It was Croatia's first appearance in the final since 1985 when they reached that stage for the first time.

Waske, who was also a last-minute replacement for Michael Kohlschreiber, was always in contention but was unable to gain the upper hand against Karlovic. Waske led 3-0 after breaking in the second game of the second set before Karlovic broke back in the fifth game. A superb backhand return that landed just inside the line earned him a second and decisive break for 4-3. Kiefer looked a little flat against Ljubicic, who played a steady match but rarely had to lift himself above the ordinary.
A break for 2-1 in each set was enough to secure victory. Kiefer netted a backhand at 1-1 in the first set, and Ljubicic struck a cross-court winner on his fourth break point at 1-1 in the second. Kiefer earned just one break point in the match, and it came at a crucial stage with Ljubicic leading 4-3 in the second set. Ljubicic saved that with a forehand volley and went on to serve out the match.

Croatia beat U.S., Czechs upset Argentina

Eurosport - 22/05/2006
Croatia claimed a 2-1 win over the USA while Czech Republic surprised Argentina with an identical scoreline at the World Team Cup on Monday.

Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic overcame American James Blake 5-7 6-3 7-6 in a magnificent contest that hung in the balance until the final point.

Robby Ginepri then levelled the tie for the U.S. by beating Ivo Karlovic 6-4 7-6 before Ljubicic and Karlovic defeated the world's top-ranked doubles pair Bob and Mike Bryan 6-3 7-6.

Blake, who is finding his feet on clay after once struggling on the surface, made Ljubicic fight hard for his victory.

The Croat broke to lead the final set 5-4 but failed to serve out the match. After breaking again at 5-5 with a superb backhand winner, he was still unable to convert two match points as Blake took the contest to a tiebreak.

"I think it was a really, really high quality match," said Ljubicic.

"I played tough and he played very good. There were winners all over the place, not many unforced errors. Just really good tennis."

"I think I deserved the win... I had most of the chances. I just couldn't close it out earlier. I thought I played probably my best match on clay this season."

Even Blake could take something from the pulsating battle.

"I'll think about the positive things," the American told reporters. "I broke him twice when he was serving for the match, and he's not an easy guy to break at any time. So it's something I take from the match.

"I really feel good about my game on clay. It seems just so much better than it was last year at this time and in years past. Hopefully, my clay court game will continue improving."

The Czech Republic beat Argentina without Radek Stepanek, who withdrew with exhaustion after being beaten by Tommy Robredo in the Hamburg Masters final on Sunday.

Robin Vik defeated Gaston Gaudio 7-6 6-3. The Argentine had broken to lead 6-5 but was unable to serve out the set. Vik sped to a 5-0 lead in the second set before Gaudio offered late resistance.

Tomas Berdych then beat David Nalbandian 6-4 6-4, with Nalbandian later complaining of a sore shoulder.

The World Team Cup, which features six of the world's top 10 players, is played between eight teams split into two groups, with the winners of each group contesting Saturday's final.

Croatia versus Australia, in Group F, will be a history lesson

World Cup teams welcome adopted sons

The Sunday Times May 21, 2006

Croatia versus Australia, in Group F, will be a history lesson on one of the 20th century’s longer migration trails.

World Cup teams welcome adopted sons
Germany’s shock World Cup selection, David Odonkor, is one of many sons of immigrants who will play for their parents’ new nations next month. By Ian Hawkey

WORLD CUP hosts Germany have played their Theo Walcott card. When coach Jürgen Klinsmann revealed his 23-man squad there was more bafflement than surprise at the selection of David Odonkor, a 22-year-old Billy Whizz who reckons he might even outsprint Walcott — Odonkor runs 100m in under 11 seconds — and has been picked on potential rather than goalscoring pedigree. He has only two goals in a 73-match Bundesliga career for Borussia Dortmund, and he is a striker.
Odonkor had two routes to the World Cup. Being there with Germany would, until Monday, have been considered unlikely, but last year he was contacted by the Ghanaian Football Association, which was interested in seeing if he would like to commit to the country of his father’s birth. He thanked them but decided he would stick with his birthplace, Germany. That did not rule out Ghana, because since January 2004 it has been possible under Fifa regulations for players of dual nationality with junior honours with one country to win senior caps for another. The rule only stipulates that they must make the switch before they are 21.

Run through the 736 names going to Germany and political migration is reflected widely. Immigrant communities have always produced a disproportionate number of talented footballers.

The relaxed Fifa ruling meant that in the days leading up to last Monday’s deadline for squad announcements, there were frantic manoeuvring by various FAs to see if they could make players their own. Tunisia made a late plea to the exciting France youth player, Hatem Ben Arfa; he turned them down. Angola had been pushing for a pair of former Portugal youth players to represent them. Alas, the cases of Pedro Emanuel and Chainho, both over 21, would not meet Fifa’s guidelines.

Angola’s best footballer, Rafael Nando, was hoping to be in Odonkor’s position. Rafael was born in Angola, his parents fled the war there when he was eight, and by his teens he was making a career in Germany. He didn’t make Klinsmann’s squad, but Miroslav Klose and Lucas Podolski did. When they get together, they speak their fathers’ tongue, Polish. When the draw was made, Podolski apparently sent Klose a text message saying:

“Can you believe it?” Germany will play Poland in the first round.

The squads of France, Switzerland, England, Sweden and Holland are full of first- and second-generation immigrants, their countries having opened their borders in the 1970s and 1980s for political, humane or economic reasons. Holland’s Khalid Boulahrouz is one of several young Dutch-Moroccans making reputations for themselves. Sweden’s attack will be led by the son of a Bosnian, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Switzerland’s Balon Behrami has a Kosovan background, and Blerim Dzemaili is the child of Macedonian parents.

Croatia versus Australia, in Group F, will be a history lesson on one of the 20th century’s longer migration trails. Croatia goalkeeper Joey Didulica grew up in Australia but chose to follow the European branch of his family tree; Mark Viduka could have done the same, and played his first football in Europe for Croatia Zagreb. But next month Viduka will play against Croatia in Stuttgart as a dinkum Aussie.

See Croatia's Adriatic pearls from $20/night
Visit World Heritage sites, sleep in a lighthouse, take a kayak tour

Updated: 11:44 a.m. ET May 18, 2006
Book by: ASAP

Travel by: Through September 2006

The deal: Long gone is the time when Croatia was a no-go war-ridden zone. In fact, the country's comeback has been so glamorous that it currently ranks as one of Europe's hottest summer vacation spots. Since its economy doesn't rely on the euro, a visit here is definitely great value, but peak-season airfare can still be known to break the bank. You'll be able to discover this new "it" destination with the four deals we've found, ranging from an escorted eight-night air-and-hotel Adriatic combo from $2,199 to a historic lighthouse overnight from less than $20/night

Dalmatian sunshine for $2,499
The best-value summer fling to Croatia is currently on offer by Gate1Travel: the escorted 10-day Dalmatian Coast escapade for just $2,499. In addition to air from New York, known to run over $1,500 during summer months, this stellar special covers eight-night hotel stays; 14 meals; guided sightseeing with entrance fees; and all transfers. The itinerary includes sojourns in Dubrovnik, also known as "the pearl of the Adriatic"; the historic port city of Split; the breathtaking Plitvice National Park with its terraced lakes; Slovenia’s lake village of Bled; and Croatia’s picturesque capital of Zagreb. Other stops en route are the stunning Postojna Caves; the immaculately preserved historic town of Trogir; and the elegant Opatija sea resort.

Lodgings provided throughout are at properties like the four-star Sheraton in downtown Zagreb. At this price, you can pick between the following departures: June 23; July 7 and 21; August 18; and September 1.

Save $300 on fall tours
Summer may be the peak season for visiting Croatia but what most people don’t know is that early fall is just as beautiful and less crowded to boot. So if you want to save a serious chunk of change, we recommend an autumn jaunt to this European treasure.

Go-Today's deal is the best one going here, as $2,199 gets you exactly the same inclusions as above and it’s good for travel between September 15 and October 27. You’ll save $300 over summer departures plus you’ll have the Dalmatian gems practically to yourself. On top of destinations mentioned above, other highlights of the extensive itinerary include a visit to the Roman-era Diocletian’s Palace in Split, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site; a pit stop in Slovenia’s charming capital city of Ljubljana; and a stopover in Croatia’s Zadar, the oldest Slavic city on the Adriatic.

Kayak around the Adriatic for $2,390
How about a little adventure thrown into your Croatia stay? If the idea rocks your boat, we suggest Travel Time’s Dubrovnik and Dalmatian islands kayaking trip for $2,390. Valid for weekly Saturday departures through August, this 11-day odyssey covers air from New York, with transfers; three nights at midrange Hotel Lero in Dubrovnik; seven nights at privately owned guesthouses; daily breakfast, five lunches and three dinners; and all local taxes. But here’s the best part: This fun trip includes eight days of kayaking in small groups around Sipan and Lopud islands or Korcula Island. September is also a great time to go, with weather perfectly pleasant, sea temperatures still balmy and prices for the same package down to $1,990. Add-ons from other getaways are available at low prices: From Boston, it’s $50 more; from Chicago, it costs $110 extra; L.A. or San Francisco departures increase the price by $250.

Lighten up with a lighthouse stay in Croatia this June
We also have a unique travel suggestion if you can pack up and head to Croatia in short order. Why not lighten up with a stay at one of the historic lighthouses along the Adriatic and save 10 percent off rack rates for stays through June? You can pick between 11 lighthouses, located both on the mainland and on small islets out in the open sea. Each property features well-appointed apartments with fully-equipped kitchens and TVs. Most of the lighthouses have a resident keeper, so you won’t have to play Robinson Crusoe, but you will have to bring your own groceries and drinking water and be prepared to cook as there are no on-premise facilities.

Note that there’s a one-week minimum stay, from Saturday to Saturday only. Per person rates (before the discount) start at $17/night for a stay at Struga Lighthouse on the island of Lastovo and go up to $38/night at the hilltop Palagruza Lighthouse on a remote island of the same name.

The dollars: See details above. The packages exclude air taxes and fees, while the lighthouse stays exclude boat transfers (if you pick one of the island lighthouses).

The catch: Croatia’s so hyped that prices are rising by the minute.

Moore returns

» (H) Kardinal Puljic posvetio misiju u Astoriji, New Yorku, blazenim Ivanom Merzom
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 05/18/2006 | Religion | Unrated

Anton Zec i vlč. Anton Bozanić. SluĹľenju misnog slavlja pridruĹľili su se i ostali hrvatski svećenici sa područja New Yorka i New Jerseya – fra Ivica Majstorović, Ĺľupnik hrvatske Crkve s. Ćirila i Metoda na Manhattanu te vlč. Giordano Belanich, voditelj hrvatske katoličke misije u Fairview, New Jersey.

Oca Ivana Pavla II Splitu 1998. godine. Nastupili su Hrvatski Zbor u New Yorku (novi pjevački sastav od 50-tak članova kojeg je okupio zupnik don Robert Zubović), Klapa Astoria, Radoslav Kostan i don Robert Zubović kao solisti, a uz pratnju puhačkog orkestra "St. Raphael Cappella".

Ćrila i Metoda i sv. Prisutne su pozdravili i ugledni gosti; generalni konzul RH u New Yorku Petar Ljubičić, zatim vijećnik Grada New Yorka Tony Avella, demokrat 19. distrikta – Queens, kao i Mathew Cordon iz ureda gradonačelnika Bloomberga, te Wanda Radetti, kulturni atase grada Rijeke. Prisutne je pozdravio i don Giordano Belanich, voditelj HKM u New Jerseyu i poznati humanitarni djelatnik.

Nastojat ćemo slijediti njegov put. ivot nas uči mnoge lekcije i ja uvijek nastojim nesto novo naučiti. U zivotu svi nosimo svoj kriz i svoju vjeru'.

Tin Ujevic was a friend of Modigliani

Dear Sir or Madame,

I am currently researching a project on Jeanne Hébuterne, the companion of the Italian artist Modigliani; I would like to approach the subject from a different angle to that which is usual in studies of the period, as I feel that although Jeanne has been extensively written about in biographies of Modigliani there is more to say about her as a person and as an artist, and that there is information still to be uncovered which will change the perspective of that already available. To this end, my intention is to try and locate archival information for, and/or contact the relatives of, as many as possible of the artist’s community in Montparnasse from around 1913 up to circa 1930 in the hope that details, even word of mouth, might become available.

I have been informed that the writer Tin Ujevic was a friend of Modigliani and Jeanne; I would therefore be very grateful if you could please advise me how I might contact the person or institutions which hold his archive material. I am very interested in how Jeanne and Modigliani were perceived within the community and anecdotes involving them that were current both during their lifetime and after their deaths, and so I would also be very grateful for any advice you could give me regarding the possibility of locating relatives or close associates of Mr. Ujevic in the hope that they might have recollections of conversations with him about the subject of my research, and about his time in Paris. I would also very much appreciate any information you are able to give me regarding other Croatian writers, artists, musicians or composers who were resident in Paris during the relevant period (1910-1920)

Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to read this email, and I hope that you will be able to help me.

Yours sincerely,

Notre Dame High School in San Jose student needs help

Dear sir or madam:
