素晴らしい大自然 ザダルの郷土料理

クロアチアと日本の絆


 

素晴らしい自然がクロアチアにあるかご存じですか?その自然の素晴らしさが日本の観光客のみなさんに価値あるのもとしてほとんど提供されることはありません。クロアチアを宣伝するパンフレットに描かれているかもしれませんが、それだけで日本人観光客のみなさんが訪れてみようとするでしょうか?また、限られた時間で見てみたいと思うでしょうか?もちろん、クロアチアには国立公園であるプリトヴィチカ湖群国立公園があります。しかし、クロアチアにはあるのはそれだけでしょうか?クロアチアには永久要塞都市ドブロブニクもありますが、ドブロブニクよりもさらに大きな都市であり、同じくらい歴史的な都市のザダルがあります。ザダルには多くの素晴らしい城壁群、港および魅力的な家屋の並びが海岸沿いにあります。クロアチアの美味しい料理や新鮮な食材を観光客のみなさんが半分でもお気づきになっているでしょうか?私はクロアチアの伝統料理であるパシュティカダ、シニョリナ・スモクヴァ、ベンコヴァチュカ・ヴァラなどが様々な形で紹介されるのをまだ見たことがありません。これらすべての料理、果物、野菜、海産物は見落とされているように思えます。

 

21世紀の現在でも、ザダルは自然や歴史的な文化遺産および伝統料理と共存しています。ファストフード店はほとんどありませんし、大勢の観光客に押し寄せられることもありません。教会、博物館、古代ローマ史跡だけでなく、海岸やスローフードレストラン、あるいは木製の伝統玩具や島の祭り、美しく静かな景色、変わることのなく打ち寄せる波などがあります。

 

私はクロアチアで観光ガイドをしています。とくに、ザダル周辺においてです。英語の知識を活かして、独学で10年間日本語を勉強してきました。遠くから日本を見つめてきました。日本のラジオやテレビ、あるいは意見交換をやり取りするインターネット上のフォーラムを利用できるなら、インターネットを通して多くのことを学ぶことができます。私にもできたので、もし興味があるなら、同じことをやってみてはいかがでしょうか?



日本は素晴らしいと思います。テレビでは、視聴者が行ってみたいと思うような番組を放送しています。小川、入江、大きな河川、天然温泉、雪に覆われた山岳、動植物など絶景の景色になります。郷土料理には舌鼓を打つほどです。番組の終わりで、料理店の主人は感謝されたりもします。小さな料理店でも、注目の場所として全国から、あるいは海外からさえも観光客が訪れることがあります。心を和らげるという癒される場所が大事にしないと行けないのではありませんか。クロアチアはヨーロッパの国でありにしても、その行動様式は米国に基づいていますが、クロアチア人にとってはあまり合わないと思います。東洋に耳を傾けましょう。遠くない将来、私は料理をはじめ様々なクロアチアのものが観光客のみなさんに合うようになると思っています。

~The link between Croatia and Japan~

How many natural wonders does the country of Croatia possess, but those same wonders are rarely ever offered as something of value to Japanese tourists. One may argue that they are mentioned in pamphlets promoting Croatia, but does that make the tourist want to go out on an adventure and find it with the limited amount of time that they have visiting Croatia? Of course, we advertise our national park „Plitvička jezera“, but is that really all that Croatia has to offer? We also have the eternal fortress city of Dubrovnik, but how is it even possible that most of the tourists do not know that the city of Zadar, larger in scale and as rich in history, has equally as much to offer with some of the most fascinating city walls, bastions, ports and charming rows of houses along the Croatian coast? Is the tourist even half aware of the delicious dishes and the fresh cooking ingredients we have to offer? I have not seen our traditional dishes promoted in any manner; have tourists been introduced to „pašticada“, „šinjorina smokva“ or „benkovačka vara“? All those delicacies, all of our fruits and vegetables, all of the fruits of the sea have seemingly been ignored in order to let our cultural heritage shine... but that doesn't have to be the case.

The city of Zadar understands how to preserve its natural shape, historical heritage and the traditional food even in the twenty-first century. Zadar has not been flooded by the chains of fast food or the mass tourism in the scale that the other cities have succumbed to.  It's not only the churches, the museums and the ancient Roman relics, it's also the rocky coast, slow-food restaurants, traditional toys made out of wood, island festivals, beautiful quiet scenery and the unrelenting waves of the sea...

I am a tour guide here in Croatia, specifically, the Zadar County area. I have been hard at studying Japanese language, by myself, for the last 10 years through the use of my knowledge of English language, and all of this time I have been watching Japan from a distance. A few thousand miles of distance. Still, nowadays, you can learn a lot of things via internet, especially if you're in a position to be able to turn on the Japanese TV, radio or even the internet forum where people exchange their views and opinions. If you would have had a chance to dive into a world that is yet unknown to you, would you have done it? I have.

Japan has got it right. Their television programs often air long-length shows depicting the nature and the local food of Japan, which in turn invites the viewer to come and visit it. The brooks, the natural inlets, small rivers running wild, snow-covered mountains, their natural hot springs, wildlife and various other breathtaking sights. Local food is being offered as a delicacy that can feed the senses and the soul. That food is revered, photos of it are taken, comments are made, and at the very end, the host of the restaurant is being thanked for all of their effort and kindness. Some small and seemingly trivial places become a hot tourist spot where people from all over the country (and beyond) flock to. Those same places of unscathed nature sights heal our soul, rest our weary eyes and encourage us to return to nature. By this experience, we recover the sense of peace within ourselves that cannot be found in the midst of city lights. We certainly aspire to do the same here in Croatia, but this only works half of the time.

We cater to the west and we adopt their models of behaviour as our own. Often, those models of behaviour are „get-rich-quick“ schemes which are not quite natural to this part of the world and they can hardly fit the way in which we were brought up. This time, in order to make a change for the better, let's try straining our ears to the east and listen carefully, and I promise that in the end nobody is going to be left with a bad taste in their mouth.
