Dear Mr. Bach,

I found it helpful to watch the Croatian television programs online. It is not always easy to get it to have a good picture, but what I do is listen and use the subtitles. Croatian television has a lot of English languageprogramming such as police shows and movies. I look at the subtitles and it gets me used to word order, spelling etc. Then since the majority of theprogramming is in Croatian, I listen to the news, and they have educational programs. I use that as a way to be used to how words sound. I never have used tapes to learn a language. Tapes almost never sound like real people. Thewomen's voices are usually un-naturally high, and the men's voices un-naturally deep. I have either learned it by having to use it daily, or done it just the same way. Class work is good for things like spelling andgrammar. Since it is not widely available for Croatian, I use a text book. Celia Hawksworth did a good one forRutledge press, ISBN 0-415-16131-2, it's called 'Colloquial Croatian and Serbian' It does havecassettes available. Her book has another advantage, if you have any interest in going to Bosnia, both alphabets are used. It doesn't hurt to know them. It's taken me about four years to get myself to a point where most of the time I understand what is said to me, and can make myself understood most of the time. By the way there are some good websites on language, www.Yourdictionary.com is a good place to find information. One big problem I've had is finding specialized dictionaries, such as for legal terms and medical terms. Sometimes those things are available online. Keep checking because every few months something new comes up. Best of luck learning.

Spalding students on trip to Croatia

Five Archbishop Spalding High School students recently traveled halfway around the world to the war-torn European nation of Croatia.

It was a trip they initially thought would be merely a getaway from life in the United States, but quickly turned into an experience none would forget and all wanted to repeat.
"It was nothing like the United States at all," said 15-year-old sophomore Allie Henschel of Arnold. "I didn't want to leave."
The trip, which lasted from Nov. 15 to 23, was coordinated by the Maryland Center for Civic Education as a way to celebrate International Education Week.
The center has spent the past four years developing a partnership with Croatian officials to bring students and teachers from both countries together to learn from one another.
James Adomanis, executive director of the center, came up with the idea last summer as a way to allow students from the private school in Severn to grow personally, educationally, civically and culturally.
"The primary purpose of this trip was to exchange ideas and experiences to let the kids become more aware of the world around them," Mr. Adomanis said.
His 15-year-old daughter, Bethany, is a Spalding sophomore and was a member of the inaugural trip.
Miss Adomanis and four friends -- friends who could raise the $900 cost of the trip -- made the trip this year.
"It ended up being more of a cultural exchange than a civic one," said Nicole Tasker, 15, of Annapolis. "We went to a Croatian school, lived with a Croatian host family and hung out with Croatian students and guides."
The students agreed the trip was most memorable because they saw both good and bad aspects of the country.
In addition to seeing Zagraeb, the capital city, they were taken to a cemetery where thousands of victims of the Bosnian War of the early 1990s are buried.
Some of the students were surprised at how knowledgeable the Croatian teen-agers were.
"The students there know more about our government than many do here," said 16-year-old junior Eric Stachura of Glen Burnie. "They were always questioning us about Iraq and the president and Sept. 11."
The Spalding students admitted they were a bit stunned with the difference in lifestyles between the two countries.
Not only is there mandatory military service for all men older than 18 there, but it is not uncommon to see kids younger than 18 out in bars and clubs late into the night.
"They definitely have more freedom than we do over here," Miss Tasker said. "They might be bored over here."
The students will have the opportunity to test that theory next spring when Spalding welcomes five Croatian students for a week.
Along with attending classes and seeing the sights of the region, the Croatian students will live with the families of the five Spalding students who just returned.
Miss Adomanis said she hopes this trip will be the start of a lasting relationship.
"I can't wait to go back," she said.

                                               Lenten folk singing from the Island of Hvar


    The people of South Croatia, on the Island of Hvar, have aspecific way of singing that is over 600 years old and has its roots inthe distant past.

        Their singing of Puce moj, ("MyPeople") can be classified as the best example of the national musicaltradition along the Croatian Adriatic Coast. The songs are interpreted in aprocession held during the Holy Week, starting at midnight on Holy Thursday andcontinuing into Good Friday. This dates back to Gregorian chants, and MiddleEastern Spiritual Hymns.

        Most of the singers are from the townof Stari Grad ("Old Town") which was established on the location ofthe ancient city of Faros, in 386 B.C.

        The inhabitants of six villages fromthe island begin a traditional procession called "Follow the Cross". Aspecial honor belongs to the "Cross Carrier" who carries the cross barefoot through the night and is not allowed to put it down even for a moment.

        For the first time in history theirsongs have been recorded. Nenad Bach (producer) and John Holbrook(engineer) recorded their performance on the DVD universal format (88.2 khz / 24bit). They captured ancient with modern technology and have preserved it in amost pure way. Victor Zimet who is making a film about Nenad Bach, documentedthe whole experience.


LENTENFOLK SINGING FROM THE ISLAND OF HVAR

In its rich and diverse cultural history, the island of Hvar carries the best ofwhat is an integral part of Mediterranean cultural heritage and tradition. Thebeginning of its culture extended back to the times of the ancient Illyrians,Greeks, Romans and, to that of the Croatian era.
This invaluable wealth obtained its expression in many artistic forms, such asarchitecture, literature, painting, and music. Music, as a form of nationalexpression, has a special place. The following program is characteristic of aspecific type of music performed during the Easter Lenten Period. This type of"Lenten Folk Singing" from the island of Hvar is part of a unique formof religious musical expression.
This specific way of singing, which is over 600 years old, has its roots in thedistant past. It is traditionally tied to Lent and Holy Week, dating back toGregorian chants, and Middle Eastern Spiritual Hymns. The interpretation of thepeople from the Village of Vrbanj, gives us a unique musical phenomena. Thesongs are interpreted in a procession held during the Holy Week, starting atmidnight on Holy Thursday and continuing into Good Friday. The inhabitants of six villages from the island begin a traditional procession called "Followthe Cross", during which a famous song "Gospin pla|", knownin the musical world as "Stabat Mater Dolorosa", is performed.
The procession is a form of repentance due to the people's rebellion in 1510A.D. against the nobility of the city of Hvar. The local people instituted thisprocession of repentance before each Easter. That ritual, in its originalarchaic form, has continued unchanged to this day.
Most of the singers are from the town of Stari Grad, which was established onthe location of the ancient city of Faros, in 385 B.C. Their singing of "Pu|emoj", (My People) can be classified as the best example of the nationalmusical tradition along the Croatian Adriatic Coast. The performance is imaginedas an oratory performed in church with certain scenic movements according to thepure oratorical style of musical presentation.
The procession "Following the Cross", in its original form andauthentic environment in the towns and villages of the island of Hvar, wasexclusively organized by the local religious congregation called"Brotherhood". It is very interesting that the clergy does notparticipate, but only the common people. A special honor belongs to the"Cross Carrier" who carries the cross barefoot through the night andis not allowed to put it down even for a moment. The program also offersthe audience parts of "Muka" (The Passion), "Pla| JeremijeProroka" (The Lamentation of the Prophet Jeremiah), and traditionally endswith "Te Deum". By presenting this rich cultural religiousinheritance, only a small portion of the musical tradition from the island ofHvar will be shown. This heritage is one of the major contributions of theisland of Hvar and Croatia, and there are none like it in the world.

PUČKO KORIZMENO PJEVANJE OTOKA HVARA

U svojoj bogatoj i raznolikoj kulturnoj povijesti otok Hvar je nositelj ponajboljeg mediteranskog kulturnog naslijedja i tradicije. Počeci njegove kulture seu u davna vremena od starih Ilira, Grka i Rimljana do Hrvata.
To veliko bogastvo dobilo je svoj izraz u svim oblicima umjetnosti: glazbi, arhitekturi, knjievnosti, slikarstvu, medju kojima glazba kao jedan od oblika pučkog izričaja zauzima posebno mjesto. Program koji Vam predstavljamo upravo je jedan od svojstvenih i izvornih glazbenih izričaja, jer pučko korizmeno pjevanje na Hvaru ima jedinstvene posebnosti. Izvori na osnovu kojih moemo zaključivati postojanje tog specifičnog načina pjevanja imaju svoje duboke korijene u davnoj prolosti. To pjevanje je tradicioinalno vezano uz Korizmu i Veliki tjedan, a staro je preko est stotina godina. Ono potječe iz Gregorijanskog korala, Istočnih melizama (Judeja), a u interpretaciji pučkih pjevača iz sela Vrbanj izuzetan je glazbeni pučki fenomen. Napjevi pučkih pjevača izvode se u jedinstvenoj procesiji koja se odrava tijekom Velikog tjedna, točnije u noći od Velikog Četvrtka na Veliki petak. Stanovnitvo est otočkih mjesta tada kreće u cjelonoćnu procesiju, zvanu "Za kriem", tijekom koje se izvodi pjevanje "Gospin plač", koje je u svjetskoj glazbenoj kulturi poznato pod nazivom "Stabat Mater Dolorosa". Te procesije su pokajničkog karaktera, a nastale su u vezi s pučkom pobunom protiv plemstva 1510. godine u gradu Hvaru, nakon koje su ih pučani iz pokajničkih pobuda počeli odravati uoči svakog Uskrsa. Taj obredni kontinuitet u svom izvornome arhaičnom obliku odrao se nepromjenjen do danas.
Najveći dio pjevača je iz mjesta Stari Grad (koji je nastao na tlu antičkog grada Farosa 385-te godine prije Krista). Njihovo pjevanje "Puče moj" moe se reći da je jedan od najboljih uzoraka pučke glazbene tradicije na cijeloj hrvatskoj obali. Izvodjenje je zamiljeno na način kako se izvode oratoriji u crkvama ali sa specifičnim scenskim pokretom to ga izuzima iz Čistog oratorijskog načina prezentiranja glazbe. U svom izvornom obliku, naime, i autentičnoj sredini, mjestima i selima na otoku Hvaru, procesija "Za kriem" bila je isključivo organizirana od vjerskih kongregacija, tzv. bratovtina. Zanimljivo je i to to u njima ne sudjeluje svećenstvo, već isključivo puk. Posebna Čast pripada "krionoi", koji bosonog cijelu noć nosi kri, ne doputajući niti jedan tren da ga spusti na tlo. Ovaj program nudi publici i neke dijelove iz "Muka" (pasijon) i iz "Plač Jeremije Proroka", a zavrava tradicionalnim " Te Deum" - "Tebe Boga hvalimo". Predstavljajući ovu kulturnu crkvenu batinu nastojali smo Vam dočarati barem dio bogate hvarske pučke glazbene tradicije, koja je vjekovima bila jedna od najbitnijih kulturno-religioznih značajki Hvara i Hrvatske uopće.

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland (CP) - Olympic champion Janica Kostelic skied two excellent runs Sunday to easily win a World Cup slalom and combined. The Croatian, who leads the World Cup overall and slalom standings, had a total time of one minute 42.97 seconds. She was 1.23 seconds ahead of Tanja Poutiainen of Finland, with Claudia Riegler of New Zealand third.

Britt Janyk of Whistler, B.C., was the top Canadian, finishing 19th with a two-run time of 1:45.44.

Kostelic also won the combined, giving her a runaway lead in the overall World Cup standings after 14 events. She has a total of 15 World Cup victories.

Genevieve Simard of Val-Morin, Que., finished 13th in the combined with a total 3:38.87.

"I've given myself a great Christmas present," said Kostelic, the only skier along with Germany's Martina Ertl to race in all five disciplines. "I was lucky to win, I nearly skied out.

"My goggles were really wet and I had to wipe them clean a couple of times, which made me make a mistake in the upper part of the course."

Kostelic's wide margin of victory in the slalom assured her the win in the combined in which times from Saturday's downhill were added to those of the slalom, with the quickest winning.

Kostelic was sixth in Saturday's downhill with a full second to make up over winner Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria, the reigning overall World Cup champion.

But Kostelic easily made up the deficit in the slalom, with Dorfmeister finishing back in the pack in the slalom, to finish the combined in seventh place.

Kostelic leads the overall with 775 points, holding a comfortable lead of 337 points over Dorfmeister.

In the combined, Ertl was second and German compatriot Maria Riesch was third.

This was Kostelic's 13th World Cup slalom victory. At Salt Lake City, Kostelic became the first Alpine skier to capture four medals in a single Olympics.

She won the season-opening slalom in Park City, Utah, then finished runner-up in Aspen, Colo., and fourth in the new elimination slalom in Sestriere last weekend.

Kostelic has had a slower start to the season in the speed events. The Croatian underwent an appendectomy in August. She also had three knee operations last year.

Poutiainen, fourth after the opening leg, climbed two spots into second place at 1:44.20. Riegler surged from 18th after the opening leg into third with a time of 1:44.44.

The Kiwi watched from the finish area as 15 other skiers tried to better her time, each struggling with the wet snow and rutted course.

Germany's Annemarie Gerg was seeking her first career World Cup victory after eight years on the circuit. She was second after the opening leg but finished fifth. The result still topped her previous best performance, sixth place in a slalom in Zwiesel, Germany, in 1997.

Reigning giant slalom world and World Cup champion Sonja Nef of Switzerland was third heading into the final run but dropped into a seventh-place tie with Schleper at 1:44.73.

Croatia's prominent architect is dead

ZAGREB, Croatia - Andre Mohorovicic, Croatia's prominent architect whose work led to the discovery of the remnants of ancient cities across Croatia, has died, the Academy of Science and Arts announced Wednesday. He was 89.

Mohorovicic died on Tuesday of a heart disease.

Mohorovicic graduated at Zagreb's university and later specialized in architecture in the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy. He was the chief editor of Croatia's Encyclopedia of Arts.

He wrote more than 100 books on the theory of architecture and urbanism, but he also led field studies resulting in thediscovery and preservation of ancient cities here.

men decided to badger the nuns in an effort to get them to move.
     In a very loud voice, the first guy said, "I thinkI'm going to move to
Utah, there are only 100 Catholics living there..."
     The second guy spoke up and said, "I want to go toMontana, there are
only 50 Catholics living there...
     The third guy spoke up and said, "I want to go toIdaho, there are only
25 Catholics living there..."
     One of the nuns turned around, and looked at the men,and calmly said,
"Why don't you go to hell, there aren't any Catholics there."
