Croatiawill always have a special place in my heart and in my prayer

                                                                           - Pope John Paul II -

" Pope John Paul II's remarks in English at his weekly general audience June 11:

Today I would like to speak briefly about my recent pilgrimage to Croatia, the theme of which was "The Family: the Way of the Church and of People." This was my 100th apostolic visit, and i give heartfelt thanks to Almighty God for opening to me once more the roads of the world so that i could bear witness to Him among the nations.
During this pilgrimage, my third to Croatia, I had the joy of beatifying Sister Marija Propetoga Isusa Petkovic(Sister Maria Petkovic) in her noble homeland. I also encouraged women to make their unique spiritual and moral contribution to society, and reminded all the Lord's disciples that everyone is called to holiness. On Pentecost Sunday, I invoked a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon Christian families in Croatia and throughout the world.
May God continue to bless and protect Croatia; this country will always have a special place in my heart and in my prayer. "

Tyler Kraften, 14, shows how he tested water in the Rio Grande for the past two years. His research has won him a trip to the GLOBE Learning Expedition's international science conference in Sibenik, Croatia.

Link to the GLOBE program
Fourteen-year-old Tyler Kraften had never heard of Croatia before this year.

But the Northeast El Pasoan will learn about the country firsthand when hetravels there this month to present his original research on the chemistry ofthe Rio Grande at an international science conference.

"It's overwhelming," said Kraften, who will enter ninth grade atChapin High School this fall. "I don't know much about Croatia. I heardsomeone speaking Croatian once, and I didn't understand anything theysaid."

Tyler is one of 39 American students -- and the only Texan -- participatingin the 2003 GLOBE Learning Expedition in Sibenik, Croatia, part of the formerYugoslavia. Students and teachers from 23 countries will share research abouttopics such as rainfall patterns in Cameroon, water quality deterioration inArgentina and climate change in Norway.

During the past two years, Kraften has taken monthly samples from nine partsof the Rio Grande from Sunland Park to Las Cruces. He measured turbidity(clearness), temperature, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, nitrates, pHand alkalinity (ability to neutralize acid) to find seasonal changes in theriver's chemistry.

Like other GLOBE (Global Learning Observations to Benefit the Environment)students around the world, Tyler reported his data via the Internet for use byscientists. More than a million students in 103 countries have participated inGLOBE, and there are more than 100 GLOBE schools in El Paso County.

Tyler worked with Canyon Hills Middle School teacher Eloy Salamanca andUniversity of Texas at El Paso GLOBE coordinator Robin Hoffer. Hoffer saidTyler's research will teach him to become a responsible voter because heunderstands the science behind water policy issues.

"It makes a little scientist out of him," Hoffer said. "He'sour poster boy."

For Tyler's mother, Kathy Kraften, who trains science teachers in the El PasoIndependent School District about GLOBE and other programs, the strength ofGLOBE is its non-advocacy approach.

"It lets kids explore and ask their own questions," said KathyKraften, who will accompany her son to Croatia.

The pair will leave early Friday morning. Two days later -- after layovers inDenver; Frankfurt, Germany; and Prague, Czech Republic, and a drive from theairport in Split, Croatia -- the Kraftens will arrive in Sibenik for the six-dayconference. Tyler will give a talk and present a poster about his study at theevent, which will conclude July 4.

"I don't really have any doubts in myself," said Tyler Kraften, wholikes to play video games when he's not doing research. "I think I'm goingto do good."

Kathy Kraften said her only concern is finding meals in Croatia that her sonwill eat.

"We're worried about food," she said. "He likes pizza."

CroatianPioneers  by  Ken Beckie

I (Ken [Brkic] Beckie) am in the process of having a book printed about the 50 pioneer Croatian families who settled on homesteads in central Saskatchewan, mostly before WW 1. They all came from the vicinity of Lovinac, Lika, Croatia. The book has 250 pages about 118 photographs and 20 maps/diagrams. It has one page biographies and a photograph for each of the 50 families. It also includes a genealogical chart for each family and their descendants and a condensed 30 page history ofCroatia which focuses on the Lovinac area.
The author's father Nikola Brkic now Beckie was born near Lovinac and came to Canada at age 4 in 1906 and is still living. The author Ken Beckie was born in 1929 in Saskatchewan and is a retired petroleum geologist. He has researched the information for this book for 30 years.
Cost of the book has not yet been resolved, but should be approximately $30 US depending on the amount of financial contributions which the author might receive to offset some of the printing costs.

VISITA DEL PAPA A BANJA LUKA –BEATIFICACION DE IVAN MERZ

(HIC), 'Papa u Banja Luki: 70tisuca ljudi na misi u Petricevcu', 23/6/2003

Lamento quealgunos conciudadanos mios no hayan concurrido a Petricevac.

NFCA Hosts Successful Croatian Wine Tasting on Capitol Hill

(Washington, D.C. - June 23, 2003) The National Federation of Croatian
Americans (NFCA) held a successful Croatian wine tasting event on Capitol Hill on
Monday, June 16 at the home of NFCA member Lucie Gikovich! Tony Butala, founder
of " The Lettermen" and a Napa Valley vintner served as the master of
ceremonies. NFCA friend and Congressman George Radanovich, a vintner from
California, was the special guest of honor at this event which was also attended by
Congressmen Walter Jones, Dana Rohrabacher, and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey. There
were over 40 Croatian Americans and congressional guests that came out to
taste fine wines from Croatia, hear more about Croatian issues of interest and to
interact with Members of Congress.

This Capitol Hill event allowed NFCA members the opportunity to promote
Croatia and Croatian issues like membership in NATO to the many congressional
staffers in attendance. Deputy Ambassador Kresimir Pirsl, represented the Croatian
Embassy and thanked all the dignitaries and congressional guests for showing
their interest and support for Croatia. Congressman George Radanovich
welcomed everyone, shared his love for his ancestors's homeland and highlighted his
leadership and efforts on behalf of Croatia in the U.S. Congress. Steve
Rukavina, the past NFCA President said " I want to thank Congressmen Radanovich,
Jones, Rohrabacher, and Congresswoman Woolsey on behalf of the NFCA for their
strong support of Croatia and for attending this special wine tasting event. I am
very pleased that our dignitaries and guests were able to experience the fine
wines of Croatia and learn more about the many tourist attractions of Croatia
and it's long beautiful Adriatic coast line with over one thousand islands."

Tony Butala, was the featured speaker of the evening and entertained the
crowd with a few stories about his Croatian heritage, life as an entertainer and
vintner. The Croatian American originally from Sharon, PA, led the select
group through a wine tasting lecture and process that was enjoyable and
educational. "It is great to be in Washington, D.C. with old friends and meeting new
friends of Croatia in the process. It is always a pleasure to introduce more
Americans to the culture and history of Croatian winemaking that dates back to
the Roman times," said the Croatian American singer.

The Dingac wine from the Ivo Skaramuca Vineyards on Peljasac made from the
Plavac Mali grape was a real crowd pleaser as was the Nikola Bura Plavac brought
by Mike Babic of Vinum USA (Madison, NJ). Also, the fine Dingac and Postup
red wine sent down by Twice, Inc and also from Peljasac, was appreciated by all
in attendance. The Zlahtina wine from the Katunar winery on Krk and the
Grasevina wine from the Dakovacko winery were the favorite white wines on display.

This will be the first in a series of wine tastings that the NFCA will be
hold throughout the country to showcase Croatian wine and tourism. These events
will allow the NFCA to interact with local Croatian American communities
throughout the nation and increase awareness about the attractions of Croatian
tourism and the fine wines from Croatia.

If you have any questions about the NFCA or activities, please call our
national NFCA office at 202-331-2830 or e-mail us at nfcahdq@aol.com

"Resolution Marking the Significance of the United States - Adriatic Charter
Signing Passes U.S. House of Representatives with NFCA Support"

(Washington, D.C. June 30) The National Federation of Croatian Americans
(NFCA) heralds the passage of Engel Resolution (H. Con. Res. 209) commending the
signing of the United States-Adriatic Charter, a charter of partnership among
the United States, Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia, on June 23rd in the U.S.
House of Representatives. This legislation expresses the support of the U.S.
Congress for this Sense of Congress Resolution which was reported out the House
International Relations Committee on June 12 with the support of nearly
thirty co-sponsors.

U.S. Secretary of State Powell and the foreign ministers of Croatia,
Macedonia, and Albania signed the Charter on May 2, 2003, in the Albanian capitol of
Tirana. The Adriatic Charter and Engel Resolution were strongly supported by
the diplomatic community in Washington, including Dr. Ivan Grdesic the current
Ambassador to the U.S. and Mexico from the Republic of Croatia. NFCA President
John Kraljic's letter in full support of passage of the Resolution was
included in the debate in the Congressional Record by Rep. Elliot Engel (D-NY) as an
expression of Croatian-American support for the legislation. The Resolution
passed 381 - 1.

Under the Charter the nation-state signatories pledge to support the efforts
by Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia to join Euro-Atlantic institutions like
NATO and the European Union. The debate on the Floor of the U.S. House of
Representatives noted that the three aspiring nations commit themselves to accelerate
their democratic and defense reforms, protect human rights, implement
market-oriented economic policies, upgrade their border security so they can further
contribute to regional stability, and generally enhance their mutual
cooperation by signing this agreement. A copy of the Engel Resolution follows this
press release or can be obtained by contacting the NFCA Office in Washington,
D.C. The entire June 23, 2003, debate in the Congressional Record can be viewed
at www.gpo.gov/gpoaccess

In the debate record, NFCA's John Kraljic noted that the "NFCA has long
supported the Republic of Croatia's request for membership in the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization (NATO). We believe it is a natural and important extension
of Croatia's integration into important western security and related alliances
since the Republic's reestablishment as a viable nation-state over ten years
ago. Croatia is the most stable and economically developed country in the
southeastern Europe. Its democratic structure has been strongly established as
evidenced by three national elections since 1990. Croatia has a wide range of
political parties and a free and independent press. Economically, Croatia's Gross
Domestic Product is greater than that of most of its neighbors, some of whom
have already joined NATO. Furthermore, since the time Croatia claimed its
independence in the early 1990s, it has adopted American and NATO military
techniques. Croatia currently participates as full partner in the U.S. and NATO war on
international terrorism." Mr. Kraljic has vowed that the NFCA will continue
to strongly support Croatia's inclusion in NATO at the very first opportunity
that presents itself.

The NFCA is a Washington, D.C.-based national umbrella organization that
represents over 20 Croatian American groups and 130,000 members.

Sri Lanka pledges to strengthen economic ties with Croatia

Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando who visited Croatia last week pledged to strengthen bilateral trade relations with Croatia with the early conclusion of the Agreement on Investment Protection and Promotion. The Croatian Foreign Minister Tonino Picula accepted Minister Fernando's invitation to visit Sri Lanka in December this year with a business delegation in order to identify key areas of economic cooperation, a press release said.

The two delegations also agreed to work towards the early conclusion of the Agreements on Air Services, Maritime Cooperation, Avoidance of Double Taxation and Cultural and Sports Cooperation.

The Sri Lankan delegation expressed interest in promoting the sale of Ceylon tea, furniture and textile to Croatia while the Croatian side expressed interest in promoting their pharmaceutical products, shipbuilding and fisheries sectors. Minister Fernando also expressed interest in establishing linkages between the higher educational institutes and diplomatic academies of the two countries.

The two Foreign Ministers discussed regional, international and other issues of mutual interest, including Croatia's proposed accession to the European Union in the future.

During his meeting with the Croatian President, Minister Fernando referred to the similarities between Sri Lanka and Croatia both being small, democratic states strategically located to become the gateways to South Asia and the European Union respectively.

During his meeting with the Deputy President of the Croatian Parliament, the Foreign Minister discussed among other issues, the possibility of exchange of Parliamentary Groups from the two countries.

Sri Lanka and Croatia established diplomatic relations in 1997 and the Foreign Ministries of the two countries last year signed a Protocol on Consultations whereby the two sides agreed to maintain regular dialogue on matters of mutual interest.

The Croatian Foreign Minister and the President undertook official visits to Sri Lanka in May 2001 and in November 2002 respectively.
