SMILJAN, Croatia (AFP) - Croatia has marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Nikola Tesla, one of the pioneers of modern electrical engineering, who won fame in the United States as one of the world's greatest inventors.

"I am happy that we are here today to celebrate Tesla, a Croatian Serb, a son of Croatia and a citizen of the world," Croatian President Stipe Mesic said Monday.

He spoke at a ceremony held just near the house where the scientist, an ethnic Serb, was born in 1856 in the south-central village of Smiljan while Croatia was a part of the old Austro-Hungarian empire.

The event was attended along with several hundred people by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Mesic's Serbian counterpart Boris Tadic, other officials, foreign diplomats and representatives of Croatian Serbs.

The officials emphasized that Tesla symbolized Croatia's and Serbia's shared past before the bloody break-up of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

They said his anniversary could be an occasion for further boosting of trust between the two countries, citing notably the scientist's statement that he was equally proud of his Serb origin and Croatian homeland.

Ties between Croatia and Serbia have been gradually improving since Zagreb's 1991-1995 war of independence from the former Yugoslavia. During the war Belgrade politically and militarily backed Serb rebels who fought Zagreb forces. "I am happy that this ceremony is an opportunity to show that Croat-Serb relations are definitely entering a normal phase," Mesic emphasized.

In Smiljan, the officials opened a Tesla memorial complex, including his restored childhood house.

It has been turned into a museum with exhibits focusing on the early years and first inventions of the gifted child, who defied his father's wish that he follow in his footsteps and become a priest. The complex also includes a multimedia centre connected to the Niagara Falls power plant in the United States, which was designed by the inventor. Later in the day a monument to the scientist which was destroyed at the outbreak of the 1991-1995 war was to be unveiled in the nearby town of Gospic. The Croatian government late last year declared 2006 "The Year of Nikola Tesla."

The US ambassador to Croatia and US President George W. Bush's envoy for the occasion, Robert Bradtke, recalled a message sent by Bush to Mesic in May to mark Tesla's anniversary. "Nikola Tesla is a proof that real greatness surpasses national borders and differences," Bradtke said in the Croatian language, quoting comments made by Bush. At the age of 28, Tesla moved to the United States where his genius blossomed as he churned out a vast of array of inventions, the most famous of which was the alternating current (AC) motor, used the world over today.

A pioneer in the days when electricity was changing everyday life, Tesla was touted last year as one of the 100 greatest Americans by the Discovery Channel, the US cable television science and nature network. He patented more than 700 inventions over the years, including wireless communication, remote control and fluorescent lighting. Though he made the cover of Time magazine in 1931, Tesla, by then a naturalised American who saw himself as a citizen of the world, died alone in a New York hotel 12 years later at the age of 86.

Petar Miso Mihocevic

Petar Miso Mihocevic (1949), BA in Letters and Philosophy from the Zagreb University (Political Sciences never completed), from a family of musicians and professors. Scholarships to USA, Italy and Great Britain.
In theatre and music since early childhood, first 'position' of an errand boy at the Press Office of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival when only 14 ( after being forced to interrupt a promising career in swimming for skin infection on the eve of federal championships); subsequently spent each summer with the Festival,
progressing from an assistant to the General Secretary to the host and interpreter in charge of international artists. After his BA, he was scouted by chance and was invited to become a fashion model in Rome, where he was soon engaged by a famous family of designers as personal secretary to the company’s
owner. Followed an international 'career' in fashion and films (he never took seriously either of the two). After many years he was engaged by the Dubrovnik Summer Festival as its PR Manager, then as Principal Producer (1986-1991) in which period he re-established the Festival's fame by engagements of
world’s foremost artists and theatres of the time (Caballe', Ughi, Wiener Sängerknaben, Dresden Symphony, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Royal National Theatre with Daniel Day-Lewis as Hamlet, Moscow Philharmonic, etc). When in 1991 the Serbian-Montenegrin Army attacked the area of
Dubrovnik, he volunteered to the National Guards (later Croatian Army; was its Senior Liaison Officer with international missions – UN forces, EUMM, UNICEF, UNESCO, Red Cross - and the opposite army; in late 1999 demobilized upon personal request in the rank of colonel), was the first local negotiator with the aggressing forces on the occupied territories, has hosted all the most prominent personalities visiting Dubrovnik, including HRH Prince of Wales, Turkish President Demirel, HRH Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the members of the Royal family of Habsburg, all ambassadors to the new country, foreign ministers of defense ( USA, Germany, Great Britain). Thereupon he again joined the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, where he was appointed General Manager. He stepped down out of his own will in late 2001, whereupon he founded his own event and concert management agency AGEVENT. The agency soon came to fame internationally, both in events (catering to clients such as Microsoft, Estee’ Lauder, Falck, Medipharm, CEO, YPO, to Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Culture of Croatia etc.), and, especially as the organizer of the Festival of Chamber Music ‘Julian Rachlin & Friends’, considered by many expert critics the best festival of its kind ever. (More on all at: www.agevent.biz  ).During the same time, in summer 2004 he was asked by the Lady Mayor of Dubrovnik to take over the City Theatre which was undergoing a serious crisis
(wrong repertoire, no audience). In less than one complete season, all evenings of the totally new repertoire at the theatre have become a sell out.Interests include reading, music (an amateur singer, started as a small boy, later a leading vocal in a band, singer in several choirs, among which he was a co-founder of the Dubrovnik-based ‘Libertas’ Symphony Choir; has appeared in choruses in opera productions at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival; plays so much applauded role of a ‘Presenter’ in his own latest production of a musical in the Dubrovnik Theatre). On the list of essential needs is humor and goodwill.

Dear Friend Friden Hieu,

It is endearing to know that someone in Vietnam cares enough to find CROWN and write suggestions to our tennis players. Special? I call this special and I personally thank you for your kind thoughts and suggestions. Just a concept that you use music to encourage others is a higher consciousness in itself. I am sure that Mario will appreciate it as well as many tennis players and fans around the world. If anyone knows the height of the tennis net, please send an answer to Hieu  at friden_nvt@yahoo.com .

Giving Tennis suggestions to Mario Ancic

Hi everyone !
I'm one of the biggest fans of Mario Ancic ( I suppose you all know him, your country's tennis player ).
I will go straight into the subject. I'm writing this letter to you just to ask for Ancic's email, or address in order to contact him. You know, his most recent plays didn't make me feel good, because I think, he's got some trouble or things like that, and that made him to unable to play with his best. At this time, I just want to get his email and give him some suggestions about the ways to play better ( in my opinion, this may help !! ). That's about using geometry in playing. I'm looking forward to hearing from you !
Best health to all of you !
Yours sincerely.

Friden.
friden_nvt@yahoo.com

My real name's not Friden ( because I'm a Vietnamese ), it's Hieu. And I'm not so special, I'm just a student in a secondary school, next term will be high school.

I really love Mario Ancic !! Ancic forever !!

Dear,
How are you doing now ? - I just want to know
I'm writing this letter to you just to give my suggestions about ways to play tennis !
I don't know whether anyone had given this or not.
This is about hitting a net point. In my opinion, if your opponent approach the net to get a net point, you should also get nearer the net - about 2/3 of the length to the net - than just stand right at your place in the back of the court . I think this will help much because the angle will be made narrower, then you may hit the ball back, in order not to let the opponent to win. I'm wondering if this would help, but the possibility would be 60% ( I think )
I wish you all would have good health and so do your family !
Hope to hear any good from you !

Hieu.
friden_nvt@yahoo.com

P.S : I think all of your country's players should practice together with the serving ! Because they have the greatest, and strongest serve among others else. If practicing well, any No.1 won't bother them any more.

I really love Mario Ancic !! Ancic forever !!

Dear,
I send to you all, with the players, this song as an encouragement for the next tournament, and all the plays after then.
Your friend.

Hieu.

P.S : Can you tell me how tall the net is ? I tried to find out on the internet, but there's nothing !

I really love Mario Ancic !! Ancic forever !!

Men Are Just Happier People

Men Are Just Happier People-- What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can be President. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress $5000. Tux rental-$100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. The occasional well-rendered belch is practically expected. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. Your belly usually hides your big hips. One wallet and one pair of shoes one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can "do" your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes.

No wonder men are happier.
Send this to the women who can handle it and to the men who will enjoy reading it.

Philippine Community Herald Newspaper about Bevan & CROWN
http://www.croatianworld.net/Letters/Bevan_philcomnews.pdf

Hi Nenad,

I only got back a few days ago from a trip to Philippines. One of the mail awaiting me was a copy of the March 2006 issue of the Philippine Community Herald Newspaper which is distributed Australia wide on a monthly basis, with copies also provided to Philippine Consulate/Embassies worldwide as well as other to other organisations. This issue contains an article about the publication of the piece on Bevan on your website. Attached is a scanned copy of the article which appeared by itself on the back page of the newspaper.

Other little bit of news is that the first season of handball club competition concluded last weekend. Bevan's club came first and he also was top goal scorer. Bevan attributes this achievement to the the support of his team and appreciates being one of the players to take penalty shots for the team. Pasted below is the result of the competition.

Top 10 Scorers
Player Team Goals
Bevan Calvert HHC 73
Jerome Schultz Taysols HC 58
Rajan Pavlovic Sydney Uni 58
Russell Garnett Hills HC 47
Josh Parmenter HHC 45
Jason Hoppner HHC 44
Ivica Djuric Blue Star 42
Mirko Pavlovic Blue Star 41
Christoph Mecker Taysols HC 39
Herve Le Feure Sydney Uni 36

The next major handball event is the Oceania World Championships Qualifying Tournament which is being held during 22 - 27 May 2006, The winner of the tournament will compete in the Handball World Championships to be held in Germany in January 2007. (op-ed. Violi's letter was received before the tournament. Australia qualified and will play in Germany in January 2007)

Once again, thank you for publishing the article on Bevan and for fostering friendship through your website. Here's wishing you continued success in all your endeavors.

Cheers,
Violi

PS A cousin is visiting your beautiful country next week. We hope to do the same some time in the future.

op-ed:

Thank you Violi. Congratulations to Bevan on his great success and qualifications to play in Germany 2007. I am honored and humbled by your attention and actions. Thank you on my behalf and on the the behalf of all Croatians around the world who, I am sure, appreciate your kind comments. Only mother can do that. Our best to Philippine Community,
