» (E) Installing Love
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 12/15/2004 | Humor And Wisdom | Unrated

FEATURE: Installing Love

Tech Support: Yes?... How can I help you?

Customer: Well, after much consideration, I've decided to install Love.
Can you guide me through the process?

Tech Support: Yes. I can help you. Are you ready to proceed?

Customer: Well, I'm not very technical, but I think I'm ready. What do
I do first?

Tech Support: The first step is to open your Heart. Have you located
your Heart?

Customer: Yes, but there are several other programs running. Is it okay
to install Love while they are running?

Tech Support: What programs are running?

Customer: Let's see, I have Past Hurt, Low Self-Esteem, Grudge and
Resentment running also.

Tech Support: No problem, Love will gradually delete Past Hurt from
your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory,
but it will no longer disrupt other programs. Love will eventually
override Low Self-Esteem with a module of its own called High
Self-Esteem. However, you have to completely turn off Grudge and
Resentment. Those programs prevent Love from being properly installed.
Can you turn those off?

Customer: I don't know how to turn them off. Can you tell me how?

Tech Support: With pleasure. Go to your Start menu and invoke
Forgiveness. Do this as many times as necessary until Grudge and
Resentment have been completely deleted.

Customer: Okay, done! Love has started installing itself. Is that
normal?

Tech Support: Yes, but remember that you have only the base program.
You need to begin connecting to other Hearts in order to get the
upgrades.

Customer: Oops! I have an error message already. It says, "Code 37943
- Program not run on external components". What should I do?

Tech Support: Don't worry. It means that the Love program is set up to
run on Internal Hearts, but has not yet been run on your Heart. In
non-technical terms, it simply means you have to Love yourself before
you can Love others.

Customer: So, what should I do?

Tech Support: Pull down Self-Acceptance; then click on the following
files: Forgive-Self; Realize Your Worth; and Acknowledge Your
Limitations.

Customer: Okay, done.

Tech Support: OK, copy them to the "My Heart" directory. The system
will overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching faulty
programming. Also, you need to delete Verbose Self-Criticism from all
directories and empty your Recycle Bin to make sure it is completely
gone and won*t come back.

Customer: Got it. Hey! My Heart is filling up with new files Smile is
playing on my monitor and Peace and Contentment are copying themselves
all over my Heart. Is this normal?

Tech Support: Sometimes. For others, it takes awhile, but eventually
gets it at the proper time. So, Love is installed and running. One more
thing before we hang up. Love is Freeware. Be sure to give it and it's
components to everyone you meet. They will in turn, share it with
others and return some cool components back to you.

Customer: Thank you. Everything seems to be working much better!

» (E) Peter O'Toole and the BBC goes to Dubrovnik
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 12/15/2004 | Culture And Arts | Unrated

Peter O'Toole and the BBC goes to Dubrovnik

The BBC are currently filming a major drama, 'Casanova', in Dubrovnik. The legendary Peter O'Toole and new star David Tennant are the leads. O'Toole will be playing the older Casanova, reminiscing about his past, whilst Tennant will play the younger version. Other stars include Rose Byrne, Rupert Penry-Jones, Laura Fraser, Nina Sosanya and Matt Lucas. It will be screened on BBC THREE.

The production will also be filmed in Venice. It is a prestige production, written by renowned writer Russell T. Davies, currently also helming the high profile return of the BBC's 'Doctor Who' sci-fi series. Of 'Casanova', Davies said "I took this as a chance to reinvigorate period drama, and to tell a dazzling and very funny story. We're bringing back to life, for three hours, a truly remarkable man, and a genuine legend."

Stuart Murphy, Controller of BBC THREE, says: "Casanova is an extraordinarily inventive and inspired drama from one of British television's best screen-writers."

It is very good news that such a prestigious production is being made in Dubrovnik. Hopefully this will result in more film and TV producers choosing to film their productions in Croatia. Indeed, Vanessa Redgrave encouraged producers to do so at the Croatian Film Festival in October.

CIL hope to bring transmission times and more details soon. It will certainly be interesting to see how 18th Century Dubrovnik is realised.

World champion girls choir from Croatia to perform in Merrillville

This story ran on nwitimes.com on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 12:21 AM CST

Times Staff Report

The Little Stars, a two-time world champion girls choir from Zagreb, Croatia, will perform a holiday concert Dec. 15 at the Croatian Center in Merrillville.

This exceptional all-girl choir from Eastern Europe, where it is known as Zvjezdice, is often compared to the Vienna Boys Choir from Austria, and members are known as cultural ambassadors of the European Union.

They will present a program of Christmas classics from Croatia and around the world. These elementary school girls sing in a variety of languages and have brought a renaissance to the art of an all-girls choir. They have performed throughout Europe and have twice been crowned champions at the Liangollen International Music Festival.

Admission standards to the choir are stringent. Every choir member must maintain an A-plus academic average in school despite spending several hours every day in rehearsal for a minimum of two years. Only by demonstrating a mastery of harmony, tonal resonance and diction is a candidate then accepted by a review board and the concurrence of Maestro Zdravko Sljivac. A choir member is then permitted the honor of singing in public.

Tickets for the Dec. 15 evening concert are $15 for adults and $7 for students, and are available by calling (219) 759-1101 or (773) 646-1099.

» (H) Promocija klapske glazbe u Americi punim jedrima
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 12/15/2004 | Culture And Arts | Unrated

Zvuk Sredozemlja - Hrvatski Misticni Glasovi

Punim Jedrima Naprijed

GLAZBENIK NENAD BACH TVRDI DA NJEGOV PROJEKT NIJE DOVEDEN U PITANJE Promocija klapske glazbe u Americi nije zakazala

Relax, watch and listen. Mozete samo promatrati.

Croatians in London Newsletter No. 4 December 2004

Welcome to the fourth issue of Croatians in London. CIL appears in the first week of every month.

This month: CSYPN Superset Tennis Tournament

Also: The BBC films major drama Casanova in Dubrovnik.

Basketball, CSYPN dinner, Zanki art exhibition, Christmas Mass, Croatian-British cultural links talk.
Special Notice: Presidential election - voting in London.

The CSYPN Superset Tennis tournament

The Croatian Students and Young Professionals Network (CSYPN) ran a tennis tournament for Croats on November 14. CIL went along to see the event.

Croatia produces considerable tennis talent such as Goran Ivanisevic and Mario Ancic. Indeed, it was Ancic's victory over Greg Rusedski at the Supersets championship at Wembley Arena recently that provided the inspiration for this event.

It took place at the Westway Sports Centre in West London. There was a good turnout, making it a doubles competition, complete with spectators. Although it was a very cold day, this did not affect play as the courts are all indoors. Apart from the players, the spectators and CIL were also grateful to be in the warm!

The completion began at two o'clock. The doubles teams took over two courts and proceeded to eliminate each other to get to the final. It was hard fought, and it came to an exciting finish by between two teams: David Hudi Dinnage and Arndt Maier against Peter Crowley and Steve Banicevic. After a nail-biting finish, David and Arndt emerged victorious.

The winners: Arndt Maier and David Hudi Dinnage

The victor's comments on how they felt was simple: "Thirsty - feel like a beer. Losers should pay."

"We wuz robbed" was the comment from the other team.

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Indeed, things continued and everyone went to a nearby pub for much needed refreshment.

It's clear from the turnout that London Croats have a great interest in playing Tennis, and it would be no surprise if further tournaments are arranged.

CSYPN are also organising a basketball contest on 5 December, see below for further details.

Ice World 2004/2005 - World Championship in Luebeck

Tajana Raukar from Croatia and her team partner Steve Price won the title in Bokrijk/Belgien in 2003

LUEBECK, GERMANY.- A winter dream from glittering ice will enchant Lübeck until January 23rd 2005. The 2nd International Festival of Ice Sculptures “Ice World” is dedicated to a „Fantasy in Ice“. Both the Festival of Ice Sculptures and the ice-skating rink in front of the famous Holstentor will turn the place into a magical winter scenery amidst the medieval brick stone architecture. A special highlight of this year’s Ice World: the World Championship of Ice Carvers will take place in Lübeck from December 7th until 9th 2004.

In 2004 the ICEART World Championship team competition will take place in Germany for the first time and only for the third time in Europe since it was started more than 20 years ago.

The official title of the event is „ICEART World Championship 2004“. The World Championship is ruled by the regulations of the National Ice Carving Association (NICA) and will take place before the official opening of Ice World for the public. The organiser of the World Championship and the artistic director of Ice World is Mr. Gert J. Hödl, Ice Artist and threefold Champion from Austria. The results of the championship will be presented to the public during “Ice World” from December 10th on.

Teams from 15 nations consisting of two ice carvers each will compete in Lübeck. Participants are teams from Armenia, Australia, China, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, Croata, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the US. Each team creates one ice sculpture, which represents the respective home country, and a second sculpture for the competition which will be dedicated to a motto to be chosen by the artists. The participants must create and finish their “master piece” with a minimum height of 3 metres from 16 ice blocks (25x50x100cm) within a fixed period of time of only 30 hours. The drafts of the sculptors go from the fabulous „Balancing Dragon“ from Australia and „Hercules and the Hydra“ from Sweden to „The ride to Lübeck“ with a mermaid and dolphins from Austria to „Motocross“ from Canada and the bizarre „Medival Jet“ from the Czech Republic. With the help of chain saws, drills, cutters and special ice carving tools from Japan and even fire impressive works of ice emerge from the ice blocks.
Tajana Raukar from Croatia and her team partner Steve Price won the title in Bokrijk/Belgien in 2003. The jury consists of five world renowned ice carvers, representatives of NICA and also representatives from the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The official prize giving ceremony will take place on December 9th directly in front of the Holstentor. Afterwards all visitors of the festival in Lübeck have the chance to vote for the most beautiful work of art. The most popular ice sculpture or rather the team will be awarded with the public prize.

„With this year’s Ice World in Lübeck we will set new standards of ice carving and the presentation of ice sculptures“, comments Lübeck’s Director of Tourism Johann W. Wagner on the attractiveness of Ice World in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck for tourists, „Nowhere in the world ice sculptures of this outstanding quality, made from 400 kg of ice are presented indoor.“ Last year nearly 250 000 visitors came to see the premiere of Ice World.

The Festival of Ice Sculptures takes place on an area of 1.750 square metres in a special thermal tent with a constant temperature of -10° just in front of the Holstentorhalle. This temperature is required to keep the frosty works of art in shape. Some of them have a height of up to 6 metres. A combination of special lighting and the reflection from the ice will present the works of art in a stunning colourful splendour

Tip: When visiting ICE World do not forget to bring warm clothes. The unique ice bar inside the tent will offer cool drinks and cocktails. And after your visit to the amazing world of ice sculptures the cosy winter cafeteria awaits you inside the Holstentorhalle. For children ICE WORLD offers a particular amusement: An ice-slide on the winter playground in the thermal tent guarantees a cold enjoyment for the kids. And in the kids’ corner in the cosy and warm, tangerine-scented Holstentorhalle the little ice-friends can warm up again quickly. Equipped with playthings and toys the kids’ corner is real fun to visit.

Or would you like to leave your tracks in the ice after having enjoyed so much masterly ice art? Then you are welcome on the ice-skating rink in front of the historic Holstentor. The large ice-skating rink with a surface of approximately 700 square metres offers fun on ice, while a separate ice-skating rink for children guarantees a cheerful slide for the small ice-skaters.

Airport Dubrovnik expects over one million passengers in 2005

Dubrovnik Airport Sees 23% Increase in Passenger Traffic
December 14, 2004

DUBROVNIK (Croatia), December 14 (SeeNews) - Dubrovnik airport officials said on Tuesday they expected passenger traffic to rise 23%, to 880,000 travelers, this year as more tourists flock to Croatia's Adriatic resort.

Higher interest in Dubrovnik as a destination, coupled with improved infrastructure and more flights by low-cost and other carriers, led the increase, the airport's deputy chief executive officer Frano Luetic told SeeNews. Airport Dubrovnik expects the trend to continue next year, when passenger numbers should exceed one million.

Passenger numbers through the first eleven months of the year totaled 863,507, up 23% on the year. Of those, 703,671 flew internationally. The number of takeoffs and landings rose by 20% on the year for the January-November period, to 11,969.

Domestic carriers Croatia Airlines and Air Adriatic led the pack. The leading international carrier serving the airport was French Air Mediterranee, followed by British Airways, Austrian Airlines and Belgian Thomas Cook Airlines. The most popular destinations were Paris, London, Dublin, Brussels and Frankfurt.

Croatian Medical Journal - Class Acts for 2004

Money magazine (January 2005 issue) has named the ICMJE editors one of its handful of "Class Acts" for 2004

Dear Friends,
May I remind you the Croatian Medical Journal, represented by editor Ana Marusic, is the member of ICMJE? Please see what compliments ICMJE has received (below).
Yours sincerely, Matko

From: Hal Sox :HSox@mail.acponline.org
Sent: 10. prosinac 2004 16:11
Subject: Something nice for a change

Dear ICMJE friends,

First, let me append my apology to Cathy's. We should have done a better job of engaging everyone in the thinking that will hopefully lead an agreement that will respect pharma's legitimate needs and protect the public's need for access to trial information. Let's move on from here together as best we can (think of cooperating in this way without email!!). I think all of us treasure the spirit that has bound us together and led us to accomplish so much together. It has certainly been one of the most satisfying parts of my professional life.

Which is a nice segue to the good news that Money magazine (January 2005 issue) has named the ICMJE editors one of its handful of "Class Acts" for 2004 "a dozen unsung people (us and eleven others) who did right by you last year." It starts with "Twelve competing editors have never agreed on anything--until now. It describes how "the editors of the world's top medical journals decided to take their red pencils and draw a line in the sand" and goes on to finish with "....the practice is sure to give the public a better window into drug safety."

All best,

Hal
