Summary. Carmen Verlichak is the author of a new monograph entitled Edificios y monumentos de los Croatas de la Argentina, published in 2014 by her own company Krivodol Press (Krivodol is a village in Croatia, from where her parents originate). She provides short stories about numerous Croatian families in Argentina. Especially interesting is the story about Father Stjepan Gregov from the island of Pašman in Croatia, who emmigrated in dramatic circumstances to Argentina. She also mentions the need for the building at Marcelo T. de Alvear street in Buenos Aires to be directed to its original purpose, a donation to the Croatian people. It was donated by Nicolas Mihanovich, a founder of Argentine Merchent marine.

San Blas. Nuestra Senora de La Paz, votive church built by Father Stjepan (Estaban) Gregov, born in Croatia.

San Blas. Kompleks Kraljice Mira

Do San Blasa (Sv.

San Blas. Nuestra Senora de La Paz Complex

What is most significant about the place cannot be captured by images, because it is something spiritual, a presence which is felt together with the souls and voices of the people who passed by. To San Blas and the Nuestra Senora de La Paz Complex, came the older Croatians, the young and the children at different times and with different organizations, often on camping excursions. There they encountered something special. Ingrid Valenčić said: those were summers of adventure and friendships, the happiest of my youth. In that place I became aware of many things. I changed I grew up..., said Maria P.

The history of the place goes back to when a very young Stjepan Gregov, he was not yet seventeen, was running away from the communist militia and escaped in a small boat off the coast of Croatia.

There was a raging storm, and his pursuers returned to the coast assuming that the fugitives could not survive. The Italian coast that promised freedom was 200 miles away. It seemed impossible to get there on that terrible night. However, Stjepan Gregov, later known as fra Stjepan, begged the Virgin of the Sea, to save them and promised to build a church in her honor. I do not know where in the world, I do not know whether it will be big or small but I will do it.

It seems that as soon as he promised the storm abated. Many years passed in which fra Stjepan worked in the Catholic centres of José Ingenieros and San Justo in Argentina, dedicted to the surrounding settlements or villas and the poor in general.

Until one day he got to know a place, which reminded him because of the sea and stones of his native island Pasman. It was the Bahía of San Blas, which had a great significance for the Croatians, because the saintly martyr is the patron saint of Dubrovnik.

In 1987 fra. Stjepan started to build with his bare hands and wood packaging a chapel called as promised Stella Maris. Later on he organized a library dedicated to the Marian theme, a refrectory, bungalows and rooms for about 20 people. Meanwhile the trees grew and a small farm developed- He also built a monument in remembrance of those lost at sea, a via crucis that surrounds the complex and a monument to the Queen of Peace, who at the entrance recieves the guests.

N.B. Bahía San Blas is in the south of the province of Buenos Aires 1000 kms from the capital.

Palača u ulici Marcelo T. de Alvear

Nikola Mihanovic darovao je ovu zgradu u ulici Marcelo T. de Alvear i Rodriguez Pena hrvatskom narodu, dvadesetih godina prošlog stoljeća.

Building at Marcelo T. de Alvear

Nicolas Mihanovich donated the building at Marcelo T. de Alvear and Rodriguez Pena to the Croatian people in the 20s. It was used as Embassy of the Serbs, Croatians and Slovenes Kingdom, later Jugoslavia. The Serbian Embassy currently occupies this building, although there is still a will to retrieve it and direct it to its original purpose, a donation to the Croatian people.

In San Blas, Argentina.
