Film 'Freedom from Despair' A Living Document of the Truth about Croatia

In Croatia it is very seldom to be able to watch a documentary film substantiated by facts. Not in the case of the documentary film 'Freedom from Despair,' by Brenda Brkusic, an American director with Croatian roots. Her film was shown in Zagreb on Sunday November 12, in the Cinema Europa as a part of the Documentary film festival about Croatian emigrants, which that was organized by the Association of Croatian Emigrants.

Freedom from despair is a journalistic biography in which Brenda Brkusic shows the life of her father just after 2nd World War in the very beginning of communism and Tito's dictatorship in ex Yugoslavia. But through Kruno Brkusic's destiny, Freedom from Despair presents a film about the national destiny of Croats in ex Yugoslavia. Many families and individuals are able to identify with the destiny of the people in this film directed by Ms. Brkusic. I was sitting in the cinema and watching the film with a few political prisoners from ex Yugoslavia, and one of them was previously condemned to death numerous times but each time the verdict came up his death sentence was converted into a longer prison sentence instead. Those are the people who know best that Brenda Brkusic didn't make up anything in this film, as they are the witnesses of that time, the victims of this inhuman and godless dictatorship which the film 'The freedom from despair' represents so well.

And really, in her film, Brenda Brkusic talks without compromising, without fear, without desire or intention to appease anyone or to agree upon a middle-ground truth. She brings out the truth about Croatia that many journalists are silent about. Brenda's film certainly isn't politically in fashion right now, but the truth rarely is. Freedom from Despair is a document of the time that many young people in Croatia know almost nothing about, for them that kind of the truth about Croatia doesn't exist, that truth is constantly kept hidden by forces, under old dusty carpets in the political morgues of the past. Anyhow, the young American-Croatian director settles accounts with today's hypocrisy, and shakes off the dust to reveal the truth about the communist dictatorship in Croatia, with reference to ex Yugoslavia. Through the stories of the people who were victims in the communist regime, the film reminds us about the things we kept inside but things we hoped to express about events from just about ten years ago, which today are forbidden due to conformity: there is just one truth, there is just one truth about Croatia! The truth doesn't recognize any agreement or settlements. The truth doesn't recognize convenient and inconvenient moments to talk about the truth. The truth doesn't accept and doesn't admit reasons for silence. The truth must be loud, the truth must be said. Brenda Brkusic's movie, as a living document about Croatia, warns us about it. It is a document that is a living monument to the Croatian victims of communism and a warning to the generations to come, to those who didn't grow up during those unhappy times when many Croatians were looking for a way to achieve their own 'freedom from despair.'

'There are no good or bad times. There are just good and bad people in time...' said the assistant bishop Valentin Pozaic in his speech for the 10 year anniversary of the Church of the Holy Mother of the Freedom in Zagreb. At that moment, images from the film Freedom form despair dawned on me, images that clearly explained those bishop's words. Images from a time of temptation, suffering, sacrifice. Images of the exodus of Croats from their homeland to the Diaspora and testimonies from good and bad people during that time might be remembered to some as decades of hate, but we might also remember them as decades of love for those who suffered and endured and sacrificed themselves for the Homeland. 'Freedom from despair' in one way is a memory of those Croatian martyrs and it pays homage to their sacrifices for Croatia. Because of this they are revered and our future generations can take part in that reverence.


Film 'Izbavljenje iz ocaja" - Ĺživi dokument istine o Hrvatskoj

U Hrvatskoj rijetko moĹžemo vidjeti dokumentarni film toliko potkrijepljen cinjenicama, kao ĹĄto je to slucaj sa dokumentarnim filmom americke redateljice hrvatskoga porijekla Brende BrkuĹĄic: 'Izbavljenje iz ocaja" ('Freedom from Despair"), koji je prikazan u Zagrebu, u subotu 12. studenog u Kinu Europa, u sklopu festivala dokumentarnog filma o hrvatskim iseljenicima, kojega je organizirala udruga Hrvatska dijaspora".
'Izbavljenje iz ocaja" biografski je film u kojemu Brenda BrkuĹĄic dokumentarno prikazuje Ĺživot svojega oca u bivĹĄoj Jugoslaviji neposredno nakon II. Svjetskog rata, u prvim godinama komunizma i Titove diktature. Medutim, kroz sudbinu Krune BrkuĹĄica, 'Izbavljenje iz ocaja" predstavlja film o nacionalnoj sudbini Hrvata u bivĹĄoj Jugoslaviji. Mnoge se obitelji i pojedinci mogu poistovjetiti sa sudbinom ljudi o kojima govori film redateljice BrkuĹĄic. Sjedio sam u kinu i gledao film sa nekoliko dugogodiĹĄnjih politickih zatvorenika u bivĹĄoj Jugoslaviji, od kojih je jedan i nekoliko puta osudivan na smrt, ali je stjecajem okolnosti preĹživio, i njegova je presuda na smrt svaki put preinacena u dugogodiĹĄnju zatvorsku kaznu. Ti ljudi najbolje znaju da Brenda BrkuĹĄic nije izmislila niĹĄta u svojemu filmu, oni su svjedoci vremena, Ĺžrtve jedne neljudske i bezboĹžne diktature o kojoj govori i film 'Izbavljenje iz ocaja".
I doista, Brenda BrkuĹĄic u svojem filmu beskompromisno, bez straha, bez Ĺželje i namjere da bilo kome ugada ili se pogada oko istine, donosi istinu o Hrvatskoj o kojoj mnogi hrvatski novinari danas ĹĄute. Brendin film zasigurno danas i nije politicki najkorektniji, ali istina rijetko jest i moĹže biti politicki korektna. ,,Izbavljenje iz ocaja" dokument je vremena o kojemu mnogi mladi ljudi u Hrvatskoj ne znaju gotovo niĹĄta, za njih ta istina o Hrvatskoj ne postoji, tu se istinu stalno nastoji sakriti pod praĹĄnjave tepihe politickih hipoteka proĹĄlosti. Pa ipak, mlada americka redateljica hrvatskoga porijekla obracunava se s licemjerjem danaĹĄnjice i otresa praĹĄinu sa istine o komunistickoj diktaturi u Hrvatskoj, odnosno u bivĹĄoj Jugoslaviji. Kroz price o sudbinama ljudi koji su bili Ĺžrtve komunistickog reĹžima film nas ponovno podsjeca na ono ĹĄto smo prije samo desetak godina stalno govorili, a sada pomalo konformisticki zaboravljamo: postoji samo jedna istina, postoji samo jedna istina o Hrvatskoj! Istin ne poznaje dogovore, nagodbe, istina ne poznaje zgodne i nezgodne trenutke da se o njoj govori, istina ne poznaje i ne priznaje razloge za ĹĄutnju. Ona mora biti glasna, istinu se mora govoriti. Film Brende BrkuĹĄic nas na to opominje, kao Ĺživi dokument istine o Hrvatskoj. Dokument koji sada predstavlja Ĺživi spomenik hrvatskim Ĺžrtvama komunizma i opomenu generacijama koje dolaze, a koje nisu Ĺživjele i odrastale u to nesretno vrijeme kada su mnogi hrvatski ljudi traĹžili svoj put za 'izbavljenje iz ocaja".
'Ne postoje dobra ili loĹĄa vremena. Postoje samo dobri ili pak loĹĄi ljudi u vremenu ...", rekao je ovih dana u svojoj propovijedi na desetogodiĹĄnjicu Crkve Svete Mati Slobode u Zagrebu pomocni biskup zagrebacki Valentin Pozaic. Tada sam prede ocima imao slike iz filma 'Izbavljenje iz ocaja", slike koje jasno svjedoce te biskupove rijeci. Slike o jednom vremenu iskuĹĄenja, patnje, Ĺžrtve, slike egzodusa Hrvata iz Domovine u dijasporu, svjedocanstvo o dobrim i loĹĄim ljudima u tom vremenu koje cemo pamtiti kao desetljeca mrĹžnje, ali i desetljeca ljubavi onih koji su patili i trpili i Ĺžrtvovali se za Domovinu. 'Izbavljenje iz ocaja" na svoj je nacin spomen na te hrvatske mucenike i zahvala na njihovoj Ĺžrtvi za Hrvatsku koju su sanjali, a naĹĄe generacije ju dosanjale.

HGM JAZZ ORCHESTRA ZAGREB

 

Jeunesses Musicales Jazz Orchestra Zagreb is founded in Jeunesses Musicales International Cultural Centre (JMC ICC) in GroĹžnjan in March 2002 on the initiative of young jazz musicians the participants of the Jazz workshops. Summer Jazz School is held traditionally every summer in JMC ICC in GroĹžnjan under the leadership of BoĹĄko Petrović. The very good artistic results of the workshop have motivated JM Croatia to form the first young professional jazz big band in Croatia. The leader of the Big Band is Mr. Sigi Feigl and the members are the music school pupils, students and young musicians from all over Croatia.

The attractiveness and the quality of playing as well as the team of mentors it has already gathered can very soon lead JMC Jazz Orchestra Zagreb at the very top of jazz youth orchestra scene in Europe.

HGM JAZZ ORKESTAR ZAGREB
 

HGM Jazz Orkestar Zagreb osnovan je u oĹžujku 2002. godine u Međunarodnom kulturnom centru Hrvatske glazbene mladeĹži u GroĹžnjanu. Projekt je nastao na inicijative mladih jazz glazbenika, polaznika Ljetne jazz ĹĄkole koja se odrĹžava već tradicionalno svakog ljeta u MKC HGM GroĹžnjanu pod vodstvom BoĹĄka Petrovića..
UspjeĹĄnost te radionice potaknula je Hrvatsku glazbenu mladeĹž da pokrene taj projekt kao prvi mladi profesionalni Jazz Big band u Hrvatskoj.

Voditelj HGM Jazz Orkestra Zagreb je Sigi Feigl, a članovi su učenici muzičkih ĹĄkola i mladi glazbenici iz Zagreba i drugih hrvatskih gradova.
Orkestar bi se po atraktivnosti i kvaliteti izvedbe, timu mentora koji se već okupio i mladim glazbenicima, mogao dovesti vrlo brzo u sam vrh međunarodnih jazz omladinskih orkestara.

SIGI FEIGL već je neko vrijeme prisutan na hrvatskoj jazz sceni. Umjetnički je direktor i donedavno band lider Jazz Big Band Graza. Predavač na Akademiji za glazbu i primijenjene umjetnosti u Grazu, član orkestra zdruĹženih scena Beča, producent nekoliko opernih izvedbi Opere u Grazu, osnivač i voditelj Big Band Sued, voditelj Jazz radionica i producent brojnih svjetskih glazbenika kao Bill Holman, Toots Thielemans, Art Farmer, Mark Murphy, Bob Brookmeyer, Arturo Sandoval…Od 2002. godine dirigent i voditelj HGM jazz orkestra Zagreb.

Thanks to few individuals, we have a newspapers that are worth reading. I strongly support Croatian Chronicle and I think that 10-20.000 subscription should be achievable. Unfortunately we have to rely on ourselves, although I think that the government should support such effort,  but on the other hand, our independence is priceless. Croatian Businessman Sells 20.48% Stake in Slatinska Banka

Slatinska ranked 21st among the 37 banks operating in Croatia in 2005.

15:27 - 11 January 2006 - Croatian businessman Ante Simara sold 20.48% of the equity capital of the country's Slatinska Banka, announced the Varazdin Stock Exchange (VSE).


The president of the bank's supervisory board Ante Simara sold 2,951 ordinary shares of the issuer Slatinska Banka through transactions on the Varazdin bourse. Slatinska's ordinary shares traded in relatively high turnovers on the VSE, in the last few days without any important price changes. The bank's ordinary share closed at 970 kuna (131.2 euro) on Tuesday, down 1.55% on a turnover of 710,900 kuna on the VSE.
Furthermore, three companies owned by Simara - Lustrin, Centar Prom and Sloper - had sold a combined of 28,428 shares in Slatinska Banka. The 20.48% stake of the bank's equity capital sold in the separate transactions on the VSE equals to 27.36% of the voting rights.

Slatinska ranked 21st among the 37 banks operating in Croatia in 2005.

Wizz Air First low-cost route to Croatia

Polish low-cost airline Wizz Air has launched the first no-frills flights between the UK and Croatia.
The four times a week service will begin on March 27 and link-up Luton Airport with Zagreb, the Croatian capital. A promotional fare until the end of January will see tickets start from ÂŁ26.46, including taxes and charges, after this time one-way tickets will start at ÂŁ32.46. At the launch of the new route in Zagreb head of Wizz Air JĂłzsef VĂĄradi said he had high hopes for the new link to Croatia. 'We are determined to further expand and develop our Croatian network for the benefit of more Croatian people and those who wish to visit this beautiful country,' he said. 'We plan to carry well over 100,000 passengers from and to Croatia in 2006.'

Zagreb is centred on the Trg Jelacica square with cobblestone streets and pedestrianised areas making it an easy place to walk around and visit the many cafes, bars and restaurants.

LJUBICIC WINS IN CHENNAI

Ivan Ljubicic claimed victory in Sunday's final at the Chennai Open.
 

Ljubicic, the top seed from Croatia, proved too strong for Carlos Moya, the former world number one from Spain.Ljubicic was made to work for the first set, edging the third seed 8-6 in a tie-break.
However, the second set was somewhat easier with Ljubicic taking it 6-2 to wrap up victory.
Ljubicic comes into 2006 off his best ever year when he helped Croatia win the Davis Cup.
 

'Bili smo u pravu sa hrvatskom samoupravom'

(Petak, 11 Ozujak 2005) -
Celni ljudi "hrvatske samouprave" Ivo Andric Luzanski i Zdravko Batinic izjavili su u cetvrtak za Oslobodjenje da su apsolutno bili u pravu kada su 2001. godine usli u front za zastitu hrvatskih interesa u Bosni i Hercegovini. "Istu stvar ucinio bi i danas u borbi za hrvatsku jednakopravnost", kaze Andric Luzanski, bivsi dopredsjednik Federacije BiH, potpredsjednik Hrvatskog narodnog sabora, te zakonodavnog vijeca "samouprave". Njegov kolega - zamjenik predsjednika "samouprave" Batinic tvrdi kako se i danas nesto mora mijenjati u tom pravcu. Sa Batinicem i Andricem Luzanskim razgovarali smo dan nakon sto je tuzilac Dzon Mekner povukao optuznicu protiv njih i ostale petorice bivsih hrvatskih zvanicnika zbog ugrozavanje teritorijalnog integriteta FBiH iz 2001. godine, cime je
fakticki obustavljen sudski proces protiv, kako su svojevremeno nazivani, "podrivaca ustavnog poretka FBiH i BiH i planera otcjepljenja hrvatskih podrucja iz FBiH". Iako je ustvrdio da je djelovanje Ante Jelavica, Miroslava Prce, Dragana Curcica, Marka Tokica, Petra Milica, te
spomenutih Batinica, Andrica Luzanskog, bilo jasno usmjereno ka izmjeni ustavnog uredjenja u dijelovima FBiH sa hrvatskom vecinom, Mekner nije mogao dokazati da su glavni akteri "samouprave" u ostvarenju svog cilja bili spremni upotrijebiti silu. Mekner je ostao pri optuznicama protiv Jelavica, Prce i Curcica za zloupotrebu sluzbenih ovlastenja i podrivanje vojne i odbrambene moci FBiH kao rezultat izlaska jedinica HVO iz sastava zajednicke Vojske Federacije BiH. "To je bila politicka borba, a ne krivicno djelo, sto smo i dokazali u istrazi", podsjecaju Andric Luzanski i Batinic, koji zajedno sa predsjednikom "samouprave" Markom Tokicem danas tvrde da je uspostava treceg entiteta najbolje rjesenje
za uredjenje novih odnosa u BiH. "Izgubili smo cetiri godine da bi se vratili istoj prici iz 2001., tj. nasem prijedlogu za sazivanje konferencije na kojoj bi se tri naroda, u normalnoj atmosferi i uz ucesce medjunarodne zajednice, dogovorila o novom ustavnom uredjenju, kaze Tokic. Prema njegovom misljenju, najbolje rjesenje za buducnost zemlje je uspostava tri federalne jedinice koje bi imale
manje ovlasti nego postojeca dva entiteta. Mekner i trideset svjedoka Advokat Ante Jelavica u slucaju Hrvatska samouprava Josip Muselimovic kaze da je tuzilac Mekner povukao optuznicu
za ugrozavanje teritorijalnog integriteta posto je naknadno saslusao tridesetak svjedoka, te i zbog cinjenice da je, prema novom tekstu krivicnog zakona, potrebno dokazati namjeru za upotrebu sile ili prijetnju silom.
Muselimovic smatra da ce i dio optuznice za podrivanje vojne moci FBiH protiv Jelavica, Prce i Curcica biti na slican nacin osporen. (Oslobodjenje)
