I must commend your article on Dubrovnik, Croatia in your most recent

September issue. I have been fortunate enough to travel to many beautiful,

exotic places. The pristine beauty of the Croatian coastline completely out

does The Cote D'Azur and most other well known and over saturated tourist

mecca's. I have yet to see a place more rich with history, breath taking

architecture, and more beautiful people. Croatia is truly a "hidden gem"

that is now only being visited by those "in the know." To all W readers:

Get there before the rest of the world does...and you will truly feel like

you have discovered one of the most priceless destinations in the world.

» (E) Gratitude changes our lives
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 01/6/2002 | Humor And Wisdom | Unrated

Philosopher Josef Pieper defines the essence of bourgeois

living as "taking for granted." It is true that those who live in

homes where the water always runs through spigots take water

for granted. And when people always have money they take their

next meal for granted. Our lives are filled with assumptions

about the universe serving us all the time. This is false thinking.

Will it take catastrophes to awaken us to the truth that all is gift?

An earthquake reminds us that not even the stability of the

ground underneath our feet should be taken for granted. Death

reminds us that not even breathing itself can be taken for granted.

As the forests disappear and the soil and waters become increasingly

poisoned, we learn that we cannot take air or water or soil for granted.

One way to learn not to take for granted is to voluntarily do without.

This is best done in a ritualized context where the community does

without together and supports one another through the difficult process

of letting go.

For example, go without water for three days. Go without food for five
days.

Go without meat for two weeks. These are ways to learn to cease taking

for granted. Every overdeveloped person and culture should undertake these

periods of fasting. In doing so we learn the basics of gratitude, for not one
of us

created the waters or the air or the soil or the foods that we take for
granted.

Fasting also allows us to identify, at least partially, with those millions
of the

world's poor who can never take eating a meal or drinking good water for

granted.

Gratitude changes our lives. It fills us with energy and vitality. When

I was twelve years old, I had polio and could not walk for six months. The

doctors could not reassure me that I would ever walk again. As it turned out,

I did get my legs back. But I learned a lesson in the process that I have
never

forgotten: don't take for granted.

I had taken my legs for granted, legs that work , legs that run and play
ball,

legs that take me exactly where I want to go. When my legs returnd to me I
was

filled with gratitude-not gratitude for the "miracle" of my legs being
healed, but

rather gratitude for having legs at all, legs that work. I was filled with
energy and

promised myself that I would not waste my legs for as long as I lived.

                        FROM WASTE TO RECYCLING

One of the overwhelming sins of the "First World" is that of waste. WE are a

civilization whose major product is waste, and we appear to be the only

species that wastes more than it recycles. What we give back to the universe

is often not blessing-it is poisonous and nonrecyclable goods. The
petrochemical

industry-that industry that was the very first to support a young politician
named

Adolf Hitler in German politics sixty yearg ago-has developed plastics and

Styrofoam that appear simple and cheap but in fact cannot be disposed of even

in five hundred years.

Our cities are being inundated by our own refuse. We have no way of
dealing

with the nuclear waste that has proliferated from military and

civilian power plants. This lethal plutonium will "live" for at least another
100,000

years: Joanna Macy suggests that instead of burying this radioactive waste in

order to deny it, thus making life intolerable for generations to come, we
ought

to keep it visible above ground, and build monasteries around it to remind us
all

of its lethalness and our mortality. These "guardian sites' would become holy

places of pilgrimage for persons who regard the planet as a sacred trust.

We also waste our youth and their talents and gifts. When hope dies,
waste

takes over. Whether that waste is expressedin the form of crime or drugs,
alcohol

or prison, despair or sexual addiction, it is living proof of the depth of
waste that

haunts our consumer society.

How does a consumer society stop wasting? By restoring relationship to
the

center of our lives and life-styles. If we considered our relation to generat
ions to

come, for example, we would cease giving out plastic bags in grocery stores.

Recently I accompanied a friend (who is an extrovert) to a supermarket late

at night. "Plastic bag or paper?"

She replied in full voice, "Plastic? Plastic won't disappear for 500
years!"

The cashier sheepishly responded, "Our manager tells us to push the
plastic

because it is cheaper." ...............

The greatest waste of all is the waste of our human gifts for ingenuity, good
work, healing and joy. If "joy is the human's noblest act," then to waste our
gift for creating joy it is to squander the noblest

potential of our species.

(book Creation Spirituality Matthew Fox)

... All diseases come into our bodies through the foods that we eat the only
way to

get rid of them is through fasting....

» (E) ANNIVERSARY OF THE RECOGNITION OF THE CROATIAN STATE
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 01/6/2002 | Events | Unrated
Dear Croatian American Friends,

In January 1992, following a heroic war for freedom and democracy, the world
recognized the independence of the Republic of Croatia. On JANUARY 19th,
2002, the Croatian American community will hold a HOLY MASS at the Croatian
Catholic Church in Los Angeles in honor of this historic event. Following
Mass, we will celebrate the 10th ANNIVERSARY OF THE RECOGNITION OF THE
CROATIAN STATE with a GALA BANQUET in the Parish Hall.

The guns in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are now silent, and Croatia is
an independent nation. But when you join us on January 19th, you will hear
firsthand from our honored guests GENERAL KRESIMIR COSIC, HDZ VP MAJA
FREUNDIC and DR. JOSIP MUSELIMOVIC that the Croatian people's hard fought
independence is not secure. They will tell you that the Croatian people's
existence as one of the constituent nations of BiH is endangered. On
January 19th, our guests will speak frankly about recent events in BiH. They
will tell you how your assistance can ensure that the independence and the
existence of the Catholic Croatian nation in BiH will not be lost.

On January 19th, you will hear that there is hope. In large part, the future
of Croatia and the fate of Croatian nation in BiH will depend upon the
actions of the United States of America. If we stand together, we can insure
that that our government in Washington is fair to Croatia and the Croats of
BiH.

In our advocacy of the Croatian cause, we must not allow the liberation of
Croatian territory to be cast as a criminal act. We must do all in our power
to help those who defended Croatia in her time of need. We must oppose those
in the international community who wish to rewrite history. Together, we
must look to the future for a better life for the Croatian people. But that
better life for the Croatian people will remain in jeopardy if Croatia's
independence is compromised and if Croats no longer exist as one of the
constituent nations of BiH.

This new year, please join the CAA and our honored guests to defend the
course that the Croats of the world set upon over a decade ago: An
independent and prosperous Croatia, along with constituent national people's
status for the Croats of BiH.

Does anybody from the CROWN knows more about Fuel Cells? Does Croatia have
any research on the issue? Please let me know.

Trend number nine: Energy
Fuel cells will reduce our reliance on oil and allow businesses and
homeowners to produce electricity independently.

By Lee Bruno
From the December 04, 2000 issue

Consequences:
Fuel cells are likely to find their way into several thousand medium-sized
businesses and homes over the course of the next year. This will lead to
greater consumer and business awareness about fuel cell potential and an
increase in fuel cell production for 2002.

Winners:
Fuel cell companies like Ballard Power Systems (Nasdaq: BLDP), H Power
(Nasdaq: HPOW), Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG), Mechanical Technology (Nasdaq:
MKTY) (owns 30 percent of Plug Power and Avista), International Fuel Cells
(formerly ONSI), and automobile makers committed to fuel cell investments and
technology like Ford Motor (NYSE: F) and DaimlerChrysler (NYSE: DCX).

Losers:
Local power utility companies, oil-burning power plants, and manufacturers of
gasoline-driven power generators.

 Talking Points
Think our trends are off base?
Video: Watch Herring editors defend the top ten against George Gilder.

Go to our discussion forum to debate energy issues It's been decades since
fuel cells first were pegged as a savior technology for the energy industry.
But during those years the technology -- which promises to replace
nonrenewable energy sources like oil and also help reduce pollution -- seemed
to be stuck in slow-lane development. Over the past nine months investors
have glimpsed signs that fuel cells might soon have their day, and have begun
plowing money into this promising technology, which Goldman Sachs estimates
could represent a $95 billion market in ten years.
Here's how they work. Fuel cells convert chemical energy into electricity by
breaking apart hydrogen bonds in the water molecule and using that energy to
generate a flow of electrons. The same process can be used to power
everything from cell phones (see "Dead Ringers") and laptops to cars and
buses. Some supporters of the technology have gone so far as to predict that
fuel cells have the potential to transform the energy industry in the same
way the microprocessor transformed the logic industry.
Although the fuel cell concept dates back to the 1830s, it has only recently
developed practical applications as an environmentally friendly and efficient
energy technology (see chart Fuel's Paradise).
One big motivation: costs associated with producing fuel cells have fallen
dramatically, now approaching the 1 to 2 cents per kilowatt hour that it
costs to produce electricity from oil or gas. Fuel cell projects are getting
off the ground just as rising fuel and electricity prices are hitting
consumers and businesses in the United States and Europe -- a situation that
led to President Bill Clinton's September release of strategic oil reserves.
Other factors are contributing to the sudden interest in fuel cells. Around
the globe, governments have been adopting more stringent air pollution
regulations. At the same time, states and nations are in the process of
deregulating their power industries. Meanwhile, utilities are facing
increased demands for reliable power.

Buses powered by fuel cells were tested in California this year. By 2003,
California emission standards will require 10 percent of cars sold in the
state to have zero emissions. Other states have emission standards that will
force large auto companies to produce these fuel cell-powered vehicles.
DaimlerChrysler (NYSE: DCX), Ford Motor (NYSE: F), General Motors (NYSE: GM),
Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM), and American Honda Motor are investing in fuel
cells, either by developing or licensing fuel cell technology. Mercedes-Benz
has announced that in Europe it plans to build 20 to 30 buses powered by fuel
cells, which will go on sale in 2002.
Several states are now in the process of deregulating their utility markets.
Among them, Connecticut, Maine, Texas, Illinois, and California have passed
regulations that require a specific percentage of renewable-energy sources.
The market for fuel cells breaks into three distinct categories: residential,
commercial, and transportation. Among the players in the residential market:
H Power (Nasdaq: HPOW), Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG), and Avista (NYSE: AVA),
all of which are now testing fuel cells in the field. Plug Power, in
partnership with General Electric (NYSE: GE), is looking to produce fuel
cells capable of delivering 250 to 300 kW, which is sufficient to supply
power for a small hospital. The two leading companies developing both
transportation and stationary residential and commercial uses are
International Fuel Cells (formerly ONSI), which has been producing fuel cells
for 20 years for the U.S. space program, and Ballard Power Systems (Nasdaq:
BLDP).
Fuel cell technology will give consumers the option of producing electricity
for their own homes using a variety of small, 1 to 3 kW fuel cell generators
being developed by Plug Power, which specializes in fuel cells for powering
individual homes. An added benefit: consumers will be able to resell unused
kilowatts back to the local utilities managing the power grid.
What's both compelling and problematic about fuel cells is that several
different types of fuels, primarily hydrogen, methanol, propane, and
gasoline, can be used to run a fuel cell, thus opening up choices for
consumers. However, there's a downside to this freedom of choice. Without a
single, standardized fuel, it's hard to scale up the distribution network
that would be capable of profitably delivering fuel to the automobiles and
power generators. Not only that, but any new fuel choice will require
conversion of existing gas stations and a host of additional conversion
costs.
In addition, critics of the alternative energy technology point out that it
faces a classic supply-and-demand conundrum: will fuel cell manufacturers be
able to increase production capabilities quickly enough to meet the expected
demand?
