| Fellowship Programme 2002/2003 Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society The Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS) offers five grants (EUR 1,000.- per month) for fellowships at the IAS-STS in Graz starting 1 October 2002, ending 30 June 2003. The IAS-STS promotes the interdisciplinary investigation of the links and interactions between science, technology and society as well as research on the development and implementation of socially and environmentally sound technologies. The grants of the fellowship programme 2002/2003 are dedicated for projects investigating the following issues: Technology - Gender - Education The particular emphasis lies on the analysis of the possibility of involving women in developing, designing and utilising technology and the promotion of girls and women in technology education programmes. Shaping of Modern Biotechnology A further emphasis of the grant scheme comprises issues of the social shaping of modern biotechnology. Researchers dealing with relevant topics e.g. in the fields of public understanding and participation, technology assessment and risk communication are especially encouraged to apply for these grants. Philosophy of Technology The improved understanding of fundamental aspects of technology, its origins and interaction with man and nature is the main focus of this part of the grant programme. We are particularly interested in research projects dealing with the agency of technology. Ecological Product Policy Promoting environmentally friendly design, manufacturing, consumption and use of products represents a further focus of the grant programme. Research projects that contribute to a better understanding of the social and cultural context of products as well as analysis and strategies of an ecological product policy are of particular interest. The grant application must be submitted together with an application for a fellowship to the IAS-STS. | Kevin Hallinan Assistant Director Institute for the Study of Europe Columbia University The Institute for the Study of Europe at Columbia University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship for the 2002/3 academic year. We are looking for a social scientist with an expertise in the Balkans and/or Cyprus. He/she will be involved in developing a research project that focuses on ethnically divided communities in comparative perspective and the role of the EU in southeastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. He/she will also be expected to teach a graduate-level course in this field in the spring of 2003. VINKOM GRUBISICEM, REDOVNIM PROFESOROM NA WATERLOO SVEUCILISTU U KANADI Pise: Marica Risek Dom i svijet - 18. veljace 2002. HMI je danas, rekli bismo, tek izraziti primjer nesuradnje izmedu dvaju dijelova hrvatskoga naroda. Velika je tragedija danasnje Hrvatske sto njene institucije ovise o hirovima pojedinaca, od ministara "za razvoj" koji savjetuju mlade strucnjake da napustaju Hrvatsku, od predsjednika drzave koji jubilarnu proslavu dana nezavisnosti naziva komemoracijom (?)... Kad gledate danasnje hrvatske vrhovnike, pa cujete besmislice koje pricaju i koje zvuce komicno, ali kad te besmislice pocnu i ostvarivati, onda se cijela stvar pretvara u tragediju". Katedra hrvatskog jezika u Sjevernoj Americi postoji samo na Sveucilistu Waterloo. Kako je doslo do uspostave te katedre i kakav je interes i odaziv studenata? Prije kojih petnaestak godina pocelo se u Juznom Ontariju govoriti o potrebi uspostave Katedre za hrvatski jezik i kulturu i uskoro su, poduzetnoscu nekih poslovnih ljudi, grupa, organizacija i pojedinaca prikupljena potrebna sredstva. Katedra je otpocela s radom na Sveucilistu Waterloo (nedaleko od Toronta), koje je vec godinama, prema ispitivanjima casopisa McLeans, na prvom mjestu po studijskim i inovacijskim programima. To dinamicno sveuciliste pruza takoder mogucnost studiranja hrvatskoga jezika dopisnim putom, tako da ljudi mogu bez problema zavrsiti studij, ma gdje zivjeli. Oni dobivaju sve potrebne materijale kojima se sluze redoviti studenti, pisu testove, a zavrsni ispit pisu na sveucilistu koje im je najblize. Taj se nacin studiranja pokazao veoma uspjesnim u zemljama ogromnih razdaljina. Danas je u pripravi i studiranje hrvatskoga jezika putom Interneta, jer na Sveucilistu Waterloo nekoliko se predmeta predaje internetski, "e-predavanjem" ucilisnih materijala. Moj udzbenik "Elementary Croatian I" vec se prireduje za internetski nacin predavanja, a vjerujemo da ce to uskoro biti slucaj i s "Elementary Croatian II". Redoviti studenti imaju mogucnost uzimati tecajeve hrvatskog jezika, knjizevnosti i kulture i cak uzeti hrvatski kao "minor", sto bi u nasim okvirima odgovaralo "b predmetu". Neki su tecajevi samo na engleskom tako da su pristupacni i onim studentima koji ne govore hrvatski, ali koje zanima hrvatska kultura. Hrvatski na Waterloou je u sklopu germanistike i slavistike, a studenti su vecinom djeca hrvatskog porijekla. Uz Katedru djeluje i "Center for Croatian Studies" (Centar za hrvatske studije) koji posjeduje nekoliko mikrofilmova starih rukopisa koji se cuvaju u americkim knjiznicama (ponesto ce od toga uskoro biti i objavljeno). Centar je otvoren studentima do- i postdiplomskog studija na svim razinama koji pisu radnje o Hrvatima, Hrvatskoj, Sredozemlju ili srednjoeuropskim problemima. Trenutno na Sjevernoamerickom kontinentu Katedra hrvatskoga jezika i kulture postoji samo na Sveucilistu Waterloo, ali se hrvatski jezik malo pomalo uvodi i na druga sveucilista. Stvar je sa "srpskohrvatskim" sigurno propala. Danas vise takvog jezika jednostavno nema ni u jednoj drzavi, ni u jednoj ustavnoj formulaciji, izuzev jos na nekim sveucilistima. Reklo bi se - pukla lopta, raspalo se drustvo! Medutim, proucavanju hrvatskoga jezika i kulture izvan Hrvatske, valjalo bi pristupiti mnogo ozbiljnije negoli to cini danasnja vlada i negoli je to cinila i jucerasnja vlada, a da o prekjucerasnjoj i ne govorimo. Trebalo bi u tu svrhu organizirati temeljit simpozij, jer druga pa i treca hrvatska generacija dolazi - ali i prolazi! Motivi su za ucenje hrvatskoga jezika, kao i bilo kojeg drugog predmeta, veoma raznovrsni. Mnogi zele upoznati jezik i kulturu svojih roditelja, odnosno svojih predaka, neki opet uz ruski zele uzeti jos jedan slavenski jezik... Jednom mi je jedan student matematike rekao da je uzeo hrvatski jer mu je netko rekao da je hrvatska slovnica izuzetno teska, pa da izbjegne stalne susrete s brojevima i znamenkama, htio se pozabaviti "teskim gramatickim" pravilima. Na koncu mi je povjerio da dobro i logicno objasnjena gramatika i nije tako nesavladiva... U Australiji na Sveucilistu Macquarie postoji takoder Katedra hrvatskog jezika koju vodi prof. Luka Budak. Kakva je suradnja izmedu Vase katedre i one u Sydneyu? Prije uspostave Katedre hrvatskoga jezika i kulture na Sveucilistu Waterloo djelovala je Katedra za hrvatske studije na Macquarie sveucilistu u Sydneyu. Tamo sam proveo jednu cijelu skolsku godinu, pomalo se upoznao s njihovim sustavom studiranja (i oni imaju veoma razvijene dopisne tecajeve, jer su i u Australiji, kao i u Kanadi, ogromne razdaljine izmedu pojedinih mjesta), sprijateljio se s tamosnjim predavacima, profesorima Lukom Budakom i Gracijanom Birsicem, a kasnije 'dopisno' upoznao i dr. Borisa Skvorca. Ostali smo u trajnom prijateljstvu i suradnji. Ta mi je "australska godina" ostala u najljepsim uspomenama, jer sam mnogo toga naucio. Asimilacija je neumoljiva perspektiva Hrvata u iseljenistvu. Sto Hrvatska moze uciniti da uspori proces asimilacije? Ima li smisla odgadati neminovno? Odgadati? To bi nam bilo nemoguce. Medutim, sto mozemo i trebamo ciniti je usmjeravati asimilaciju hrvatskih potomaka u novim sredinama tako da bude na korist Hrvatskoj. I Hrvati u Hrvatskoj se "asimiliraju" u neki buduci cudan svijet "globalnog sela", sa svim "seoskim navikama". I u srednjem vijeku stvarna je drustvena jedinica obuhvacala ono podrucje koje je culo isto zvono ("kampanelizam", pa i danas opet dolazimo na isto: danasnje se "zvono" (Internet) cuje po citavom nasem selu... No vratimo se "asimilaciji", koja bi se mogla prevesti kao "poslicnjavanje". Danas su u Americi podjednako ucestala americka imena koja zavrsavaju na -ic (ili na -ich) i ona na -son. Uz to amerikanstvo svatko ima, ili bar mnogi imaju - rekli bismo - i tradicijsku pripadnost, duhovne temelje ("background". "Usmjeravati asimilaciju" znaci obogacivati Amerikance, Australce, Kanadane, Novozelandane i druge hrvatskom kulturnom bastinom i bogatom hrvatskom tradicijom. Bit ce uvijek onih koji ce biti zainteresirani za jezik, povijest, kazaliste, folklor... Hrvatske institucije im to ne bi smjele uskracivati, jer - na dulji rok - to je na obostranu korist. Kad su prije vise od godinu i pol Boris Maruna i Jaksa Kusan preuzeli vodstvo Hrvatske matice iseljenika, uputili su proglas 'urbi et orbi' kako ce se Matica transformirati u svojevrsni hrvatski Goethe institut. Kako Vi ocjenjujete rad danasnje Matice? Hrvatska matica iseljenika nas Hrvate izvan Hrvatske zanima kao nasa institucija, bez obzira na imena ljudi u njenom vodstvu. Uz sve duzno postovanje prema Goethe institutu, HMI ima sasvim drugu misiju, koja je u vrijeme dok je Ante Beljo bio ravnatelj bila ne samo jasno zacrtana nego i izuzetnim dinamizmom ostvarivana. Poznajem u Matici mnoge vrijedne i radine osobe i uvjeren sam da ce, uz pomoc tih snaga, HMI opet ozivjeti i da ce je Hrvati izvan Hrvatske opet prihvatiti kao "svoju Maticu". HMI je danas, rekli bismo, tek izraziti primjer nesuradnje izmedu dvaju dijelova hrvatskoga naroda. A uvjeren sam da nitko nije tako dobar da bi smio reci - "Institucija, to sam ja!" Tajnik ste Hrvatsko-kanadskog kongresa, kanadske inacice Hrvatskog svjetskog kongresa. Sto Kongres radi i moze li motivirati Hrvate, koji su nakon euforije s pocetka devedesetih zapali u letargiju, razocarani postupcima HDZ-ove vlasti, vracanjem komunista na vlast u Hrvatsku, umorni od davanja i pomaganja, frustrirani napisima o malverzacijama...? Da, i moram odmah dodati da je moj kongresni predsjednik gospodin Ivan Curman veoma djelotvoran pa tako "pokriva" i mnoge tajnicke poslove, koje ja ne dospijevam obaviti. Hrvatsko-kanadski kongres bi sigurno mogao vise toga uciniti za Hrvatsku kad bi ta suradnja bila obostrana i kad ne bi bilo nastojanja da se iseljenistvo i "privremeni radnici" u europskim zemljama ponovno otjeraju "u emigraciju". No, kako narod kaze, "svaka sila za vremena", a u demokratskim pluralistickim sustavima vlast je kratkotrajna i brzo se trosi, a institucije i organizacije su trajne, jer ne zavise toliko od pojedinaca koliko od programa. Ljudi izvan Hrvatske - a Hrvatski svjetski kongres u tome prednjaci - zele samo pomoci Hrvatima u Hrvatskoj. Od Hrvatske ocekuju da sto bolje i sto uspjesnije razvije svoje gospodarske mogucnosti i da suradnjom pomogne Hrvatima izvan Hrvatske ne ublaziti, nego kulturnim i pedagoskim suradnjama, "usmjeravati" neotklonjivu asimilaciju, tako da Hrvatska nastavi suradivati s onima koji trajno ostaju zivjeti izvan Hrvatske. Jednostrano donosenje zakona o tomu kako "iseljeni Hrvati" imaju ili nemaju ovo ili ono pravo, ne sluzi nicemu. Takvi bi se zakoni trebali pripremati u suradnji s Hrvatima izvan Hrvatske (odnosno s organizacijama i institucijama koje ih zastupaju). Tu bi mogao i Kongres biti od velike koristi. Ukidanje prava glasa Hrvatima, koji zive izvan Hrvatske, ukidanje je jednog od osnovnih prava covjeka. Nije bitno koliko ce se Hrvata izvan Hrvatske tim pravom i posluziti i za koju stranku Hrvati izvan Hrvatske masovno glasuju. Bitno je da se nicije pravo ne povrjeduje. Usto, Hrvati izvan Hrvatske bili bi sigurno najbolji i najsigurniji ulagaci u Hrvatsku, kad bi se prilike u Hrvatskoj "normalizirale", kad bi birokracija bila bar donekle po ljudskoj mjeri. To bi, dabome, motiviralo i one "asimilirane" na suradnju sa zemljom njihovih oceva, djedova, ili predaka. Trebaju li Hrvatima u iseljenistvu krovne udruge, jer ocito smo narod koji ne voli i ne postuje autoritete, osim onih zadanih i tudih? Hrvatima, kao i svim normalnim ljudskim bicima, potrebne su udruge, organizacije, institucije... Pa i krovne udruge su potrebne, jer one mogu zastupati interese najveceg broja Hrvata u svijetu.... Uz "zadane i tude autoritete", koje valja i treba postivati (a cesto se to i mora), koje su povezane s poslom, sa svakidasnjim zivljenjem... hrvatski su autoriteti i organizacije gotovo iskljucivo na dobrovoljnoj bazi. Tu ljude spaja samo osjecaj duznosti prema narodu iz kojega potekosmo. Kako motivirati mlade da se vise ukljuce u rad hrvatskih drustava - celni ljudi mnogih hrvatskih organizacija su pedesetogodisnjaci, sezdesetogodisnjaci - sudjeluju li mladi u dovoljnoj mjeri u radu hrvatskih drustava da bi ih jednog dana bili spremni preuzeti? Jedno od najvaznijih, rekao bih i najhitnijih pitanja jest upravo to: kako motivirati mlade?... Sigurno je jedno: mnogo je lakse hrvatske organizacije, udruge, institucije prilagoditi potrebama mladih (jer to je najcesce prilagodavanje vremenu) negoli mlade prilagodavati organizacijama, udrugama, institucijama... Dabome, tu ne bi trebalo zadirati u temeljne vrijednosti organizacija i institucija. I mladi postaju vremenom sve manje mladi, a sezdesetogodisnjaci naginju zna se kamo, a upravo o tomu se vodi premalo brige. Kako vidite hrvatsko iseljenistvo za pedeset godina? Svijet se strahovito brzo razvija i mijenja. Cini se da samo siromastvo i problemi ostaju uvijek isti. Svjetski mocnici, oni koji odlucuju o globalizaciji, nastoje se sto bolje sakriti pri donosenju svojih odluka, jer se boje krvavih demonstracija onih o kojima odlucuju. Na jednom mjestu je Albert Camus zapisao da je najveci zlocin osudivati covjeka danasnjice u ime bilo kakve buducnosti... Sigurno je da ni danas ne vidim hrvatsko iseljenistvo kako treba, to jest kakvo zaista jest. "Presadivanje" ljudi veoma je kompleksan, tezak proces. Kroz iducih pedeset godina izdogadat ce se mnogo toga, a sve uglavnom nepredvidivo. Zemljama, koje su danas na vrhu blagostanja sitost, pretilost i oholost, moze se poceti vracati kao bumerang... Odnos prema Hrvatskoj, sviju njenih nezitelja, a posebno onih koji ce i za pedeset godina biti ponosni na svoje hrvatsko porijeklo, zavisit ce uvelike od toga koliko ce sami Hrvati uvidjeti svoje potrebe, prednosti, mogucnosti... A te mogucnosti nisu male. Nazalost, danas se mnogi pitaju kako je Hrvatska mogla - uz sva svoja bogatstva, geopoliticki polozaj, razmjerno visoku skolovanost svojih ljudi - spasti na tako niske grane na kojima je danas. Nedavno je putem AMAC-ove i CroWorld mreze upuceno nekoliko zahtjeva Vladi RH koje Hrvati u iseljenistvu (mahom mlade generacije) smatraju neophodnim za poboljsanje imagea i prezentacije Hrvatske. Tu se, izmedu ostalog, spominje potreba za uvodenjem direktnih avionskih linija iz Toronta i New Yorka, otvaranje hrvatskih kulturnih centara u Parizu i New Yorku, angaziranje profesionalne lobisticke tvrtke koja bi promovirala hrvatske interese... Mislim da su sve to zahtjevi, koji bi samoj Hrvatskoj bili od ogromne koristi. Ti bi se poslovi mogli rasporediti na nekoliko ministarstava. Medu Hrvatima izvan Hrvatske, uz AMAC, tu bi od velike koristi mogle bile hrvatske organizacije, drustva, ustanove, zupe te Hrvatski svjetski kongres kao krovna organizacija. Iz osobnog iskustva, sto biste preporucili mladima u Hrvatskoj koji kane napustiti domovinu i okusati srecu na Zapadu? Za danasnje stanje u Hrvatskoj mnogo toga je krivo. Krive su tu dabome mnoge iluzije, onaj seretsko-sicardzijski predsjednicki osmijeh o nekakvim bajoslovnim stranim ulaganjima, ako se sama Hrvatska bude povinovala svim zahtjevima zapadnih politickih mocnika, krive su zamisli da ce netko odnekud doci i pokusati stvoreni nered u Hrvatskoj pretvarati u blagostanje. Hrvatima nakon komunistickog raja valja, kao i Adamu, nakon svih "surovanja sa zmijom": ustati, obuci se i obradivati svoj vrt. Krive su mnoge iluzije glede zivota na "bogatom Zapadu". Mi koji smo "okusavali srecu" u mnogim zemljama i dalekim kontinentima, mogli bismo mnogo toga reci, ali naglasimo samo jedno: nigdje se mlad strucnjak nece osjecati korisnim, a samim time i sretnim, kao u svojoj zemlji, u kojoj se dogodio, ostvarivao, skolovao, prijateljevao... Vrijeme carobnih dvoraca i bljedolikih Snjeguljica, koje uspavljuje i najmanji ubod bezazlena trna je odavno proslo. Valja u Hrvatskoj mijenjati sve odreda: od "prodaje hotela za jednu kunu", do izbornih lista, koje na vlasti drze nekakve samozvane spomenike, koji provode daleko vise vremena u saborskom restoranu nego u sabornici. Treba Hrvatsku vratiti Hrvatima. Onima koji je vole, koji je poznaju, koji su ginuli za nju i koji je nikomu nece dati. Distributed by www.CroatianWorld.net. | Catherine Kapphahn (Columbia University - Non-Fiction) and Courtney Angela Brkic (New York University - Fiction) will read from their work at the event “Love: Readings by Croatian-American Voices” (sponsored by Napredak). Writers' biographies are below. The event will take place in New York on Thursday, February 28, in the auditorium below the Church of St. Cyril and Methodius, 502 West 41st street, between 10th and 11th Avenue. The bar will open at 6:30, and the reading will begin at 7:00. There will be music between and after the readings. BIOGRAPHIES: CATHERINE VICTORIA KAPPHAHN spent most of her growing up years along the Front Range mountains in Colorado, however due to her parents' nomadic lifestyle she also lived in Peru, Singapore, Indonesia, and England. At twenty she moved to New York City, where she imagined she would do many exciting things with her dancing and acting, instead she spent much of her time waitressing. When she was twenty-two her Croatian-born mother died of cancer. Afterward Catherine got her BA from Hunter College, where she began writing about her mother. She is currently a graduate student at the Writing Division at Columbia University where she continues to work on a memoir about her mother's death and rediscovering her mother's Croatian history. She lives in New York City in a fifth-floor walk up apartment with her husband René Georg Vasicek, also a writer, and their dog, Sonja. COURTNEY ANGELA BRKIC grew up in Washington, DC, and received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology/Archeology from the College of William and Mary. She received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1995 to collect data on women in the war-affected population living in Croatia. In 1996 she joined a Physicians for Human Rights team as a forensic archeologist, and worked on sites around Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina. She returned to Croatia where she lived for several more years, working alternately with missing persons’ and other grassroots groups, and as a free-lance translator. She has additionally worked for the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal and for the United States Agency for International Development. She returned to the US in 1999 to pursue an MFA in Fiction from New York University. Her first book "Stillness", a collection of short stories about the wars in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, will be published in late 2002 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. "LADO" PREDSTAVIO GRADISCANSKU KOMPAKTNU PLOCU ZAGREB - Na pocetku treceg milenija hrvatske narodne pjesme, tj. jacke iz Gradisca, konacno su dobile profesionalni nosac zvuka. Rijec je o CD-u "Na zelenom travniki" ansambla "Lado" na kojem je sesnaest pjesama izabrao, obradio i dirigirao Bozo Potocnik, skladatelj i dirigent koji ove godine slavi sedamdeseti rodjendan i pola stoljeca umjetnickog rada. I dok su ovog vikenda uz puno emocija i suza predstavljene u Velikom Boristofu u austrijskom Gradiscu, nova snimka hrvatskih narodnih jacki iz Gradisca jucer je dozivjela i zagrebacku promociju u svecanom foajeu Hrvatskoga narodnog kazalista. Predstavljanje cetrnaeste kompaktne ploce "Lada" pretvoreno je u mali koncert orkestra, zbora i solista koji je jos jednom dokazao nesporni talent Boze Potocnika, ali i velike pjevacke i sviracke potencijale jedinog profesionalnog folklornog ansambla u Hrvatskoj. Na ploci "Na zelenom travniki" prikupljene su ponajljepse gradiscanske pjesme koje su gradiscanski Hrvati Austrije, Slovacke i Madzarske uporno cuvali i sacuvali pet dugih stoljeca. This article is writen before Janica won gold America loses if Olympics are all about USA Tue Feb 5, 6:19 AM ET Bruce Kluger Two years ago, I turned on the TV for the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympics, broadcast from Sydney, Australia, specifically to watch the parade of athletes strutting into the stadium. I wasn't as interested in seeing the American team (though I wished them well) as I was in the Olympians from the tiny Caribbean country of Grenada. Since my daughters' births, both of their baby sitters have been Grenadan women; consequently, our household had adopted the ''Island of Spice'' as our most favorite nation. I leaned forward as the alphabetical procession reached G -- Germany, Ghana -- and when Great Britain's team entered, I knew Grenada was coming up. And then . . . and then . . . Then a commercial for McDonald's. Or Ford. Or some product manufactured and sold in the Land of the Free. Needless to say, I was disappointed, especially when the broadcast returned after the commercial in time to catch the Hungarian team's entrance (we even missed Haiti). Was Team USA's entrance similarly interrupted by commercials? Are you kidding? That would be heresy. What followed for the next two weeks was the usual format for an American TV Olympic broadcast: dozens of hours of programming devoted primarily to Americans winning (and losing) medals, while the other nations of the world played Ed McMahon to Uncle Sam's Johnny. What a waste. Resist showing off As the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City approach, it's more important than ever for the broadcast industry -- and particularly NBC, which is televising the Games -- to resist using Salt Lake solely as a showcase for the prowess of our snow-blown superstars. Instead, the coverage both in the United States and abroad should embrace the international spirit of the Olympics. Especially in this calamitous year, viewers around the world need to see the Games as a celebration of the global community, in which Nords and Koreans and, yes, Iranians, stand shoulder to shoulder, wielding ski poles and hockey sticks, not M-16s. Granted, the terrorist attacks on America have put NBC in a bind, as the network searches for middle ground between feel-good globalism and coast-to-coast jingoism (''We're going to cover the Games as if they were a great coming together,'' says NBC Television Network president Randy Falco). But three days before the Games begin, it's apparent which sentiment will out-nudge the other at the wire. Promos for the Games swarm with images of Old Glory, as one of the network's theme songs -- Neil Diamond's Plymouth-rock-and-roll anthem, America -- pumps in the background. So much for the great coming together. I don't mean to sound like a wet winter blanket. Every sports fan knows that the Olympics is the prime time to don team logos, commandeer the La-Z-Boy and root the home team on to victory. But this year more than ever, the home team is Planet Earth. If the fallout from Sept. 11 has taught us anything, it's that America tends to look at the world through red-white-and-blue-colored glasses, touting the glories of her own culture at the expense of understanding the complexities -- and richness -- of others. It's not all location, location In the case of the Winter Games, NBC should depict the proceedings not as a star-spangled sports bash, but as an intercontinental backyard jamboree that this time just happens to be in our backyard. Judging from past Olympic broadcasts, three areas could use a rethink: * Athlete profiles. You know the drill: It's 10 minutes until the race, and rather than fill airtime with equal coverage of the competitors, the network cuts to a pre-packaged, gooey segment about the American entry. Let's change that. With nearly 100 countries participating, surely NBC can plumb the lineup for a more representative batch of bios. If the coverage in Salt Lake is anything like that of previous Olympics, we can bank on round-the-clock Utah overload, with slick vignettes on everything from Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival to celebrity profiles on all 600 Osmonds. Big mistake. We're hosting this affair, remember -- and as anyone who has thrown a dinner party can tell you, it's not polite to dominate the table talk with stories about how fabulously you've decorated your house. I'd rather sit through travelogues that transport me to a snowless African village, where Kenyan Richard Rono somehow found the inspiration to become an Olympic cross-country skier; or the paddy fields of Dalian in the People's Republic of China, home to biathlete (and farm girl) Yu Shumei. Don't kid yourself -- there's a lot we could learn from a little televised globetrotting. * Words from sponsors. No one knows how to pull patriotic heartstrings like the advertising industry, as it proved in the weeks after Sept. 11, when it ramped up the rampart-storming with flag-waving commercials by everyone from General Motors (''Keep America Rolling'') to the New York Sports Club (''Keep America Strong''). Worldview Don't get me wrong: The ads were terrific, the country was truly hurting (still is), and the spots were just the shot in the arm we needed. But if the creative minds behind these ads could incite such a heady sense of national pride in a time of desperation, can't they call on the same magic to promote a new kind internationalism? Madison Avenue knows how to do this; after all, wasn't it Coke that taught the world to sing? In the end, economics will decide what we see in the Olympic broadcast and when we see it. TV programming is a knotty bit of business whose content and context are dictated by the generation of dollars, not krona or pesos or yen. But one can still hope that the Winter Games telecast will begin to reflect today's changing world, which has suddenly and inexplicably become both a larger and smaller place to live. Me, I'll be tuning in once again, rooting as always for the Caribbeans. Unfortunately, Grenada won't be participating in the Games this year. But there's always the Jamaican bobsledders. | Hi Nenad, In response to some of the comments generated by NBC's biased broadcast of the most watched opening of the Winter Olympic ceremonies in history, I have to agree that NBC needs to re think their portrayal of American ideals. America is the ONLY place in the world where ethnicities, religions, nationalities from all around the world can come together and live in decent harmony. Why NBC has decided to ignore some of the other nationalities in the world (Croatia being one of them) is quite mystifying. Was not Croatia the country that placed itself on the media map by winning third place in the previous World Cup? Was not Croatia (in the hands of Goran Ivanesevic) the holder of the Wimbledon title this past summer? Was not Croatia a country that found itself in a dreadful struggle for independence during the last decade? Is not Croatia the home country to some of the most successful business men in the United States and world? What does it take to get a country like Croatia to be "news worthy?" The success stories that come out of such a small country that has struggled through years of war and economic difficulties should in fact be incredibly inspiring to people across all borders. The odds that these people were up against would seem insurmountable to the average American who has been fortunate enough to live in what many foreigners describe as "the land of opportunity". NBC, as a representation and example of American media, should rethink it's choices to "ignore" smaller countries that in their eyes seem insignificant. It is an embarrassing portrayal of ignorance that unfairly associates itself with American culture as a whole.
