Sachets of Lavender from the Island of Hvar
Our lavender from the island of Hvar comes packaged in the most elegant sachet imaginable. This classic white, cut-work lace heart is infused with the intoxicating fragrance of lavender which we import directly from the Croatian island of Hvar. One of the most beautiful landscapes in the Adriatic Sea, Hvar lies to the south of the island of Brac, and is the longest and sunniest of the Adriatic islands. The profusion of lavender fields on Hvar contrast vividly against stark white stones and azure blue seas. Visit “Heart of Croatia” Gifts at www.croatiagifts.com and look under either “Featured Items,” or go directly to the category of “Aromatherapy.”

Here Are Some Aromatherapy Benefits from Lavender:
The clean, fresh scent of lavender is considered to be an excellent relaxant and a mood elevator. Lavender has been used since Roman times to help soothe emotional extremes, and today is often used to relieve moods of depression. Hanging in your closet, lavender also repels moths from sweaters. Use it as a sachet in your drawers, or under your pillow at night to encourage a restful night’s sleep. Our heart-shaped sachets, filled with the delicate aroma of lavender from Hvar, make truly elegant gifts. Available exclusively through “Heart of Croatia” Gifts at www.croatiagifts.com.
“Kao Sto je ruza miris srca “Roses are the scent of the heart,
Tako je lavanda miris du5e” Lavender is the scent of the soul”

Goran Visnjic graces the cover of the March 2002 issue of Esquire (US

Unfortunately, the story is still not on the internet.

Harpers Magazine Issues Correction

On page 86 of the February 2002 issue of Harpers Magazine, the following
correction was issued:

"Correction
The introduction to "Planning Croatia's Final Solution" [Readings,
December 2001] incorrectly stated the number of Serbs driven from the
Krajina region in 1995. Between 150,000 and 200,000 Serbs, not almost
600,000, were driven away. We regret the error."

Attached is a record of an e-mail correspondence with Roger D. Hodge,
editor of the "Readings" section of Harpers, which led to the printing
of the correction.

Hi. I didn't realize you expected a response to your email since we had just spoken on the phone. We're researching the question, but it seems clear that we made an error, and we will print a correction. The correction will appear in the February issue (January went to press weeks ago).

Many thanks,

Roger D. Hodge

THEATRICAL OPENING

GLOBALVISION'S FILM "WE ARE FAMILY" OPENS MARCH 8 AT THE SCREENING ROOM
THEATRE IN TRIBECA

The Globalvision production WE ARE FAMILY, which received a standing
ovation at this year's Sundance Film Festival, is having a theatrical premiere at the
Screening Room, the only open movie theater near Ground Zero in New York at 54
Varick Street (at Canal) on March 8 for a week run. The Tommy Boy film
chronicles the efforts of 200 well known artists, celebs and many others in
responding to the events of Sepetember ll with a rousing celebration of
the values of tolerance and the need to promote global understanding.

WE ARE FAMILY was conceived as a dynamic way to affirm our culture and the
victims. Many artists raised money, We Are Family raised awareness and
symbolized a commitment to encourage unity, tolerance and global
understanding. Veteran filmmaker Spike Lee donated his services to direct
the music video. And Globalvision's Emmy-award winning documentary film
producer Danny Schechter documented the sessions-exploring how and why the
bonds of family stir people the world over. Some of the greatest divas,
rockers, rappers, Broadway stars, actors and athletes not only sang their
hearts out, but talked about their own pain and hope at a time when hope
was in short supply. For more about WE ARE FAMILY visit

» (H) "ZA KRIZEM" Francusko izdanje za Svijet

na Vecernji list, Slobodna Dalmacija, Vjesnik, Hrvatski tjednik, Glas
Amerike, Hina, Radio ZGB, HRT, kao i Ambasadi Hrvatske u Parizu i zamolio ih
da publiciraju na svojoj web stranici, i svima dodao skanirane slike prednje

ploca CD " ZA KRIZEM ", hrvatskih glagoljaskih korizmenih napjevi otoka
Hvara izasla u Francuskoj.

U Francuskoj je izasla, u izdanju " ARCANA ", CD ploca Starigradskih i
Vrbanjskih pjevaca i zborova, pod hrvatskim naslovom " ZA KRIZEM ".
Vlasnici muzicke izdavacke kuce " ARCANA ", Charlotte i Michel Bernstein,

crkvi Sv. Elizabete u Parizu, u prosincu 2000. godine taj koncert pred
odusevljenom publikom.
Petra u dominikanskom
Muzicka izdavacka kuca " ARCANA ", premda male strukture i malog broja
preciznom izabiru najkvalitetnijih izvadjaca klasicne i stare muzike starog
kontinenta i svaka nova edicija njihovih CD ploca se prati s velikim
zanimanjem.

PUCKO KORIZMENO PJEVANJE
OTOKA HVARA

U svoioi bogatoj i raznolikoj kultumoj . povijesti otok Hvarje nosite1j
ponajboljeg mediteranskog kultumog naslijedja i tradicije. Poceci njegove

oblika puckog izricaja zauzima posebno mjesto.
posebnosti. * lzvori na osnovu kojih moiemo zakljucivati postojanje tog
specificnog nacina pjevanja imaju svoje duboke korijene u davnoj proslosti.

To pjevanje je tradicioinalno vezano uz Korizmu i Veliki tjedan, a staro je
preko sest stotina godina.
28 HRVATSKI

Stanovnistvo sest otockih mjesta tada krece u çjelonocnu procesiju, zvanu
"Za krizem", tijekom koje se izvodi pjevanje "Gospin plac", koje je u
svjetskoj glazbenoj kulturi poznato pod nazivom Stabat Mater Dolorosa.

pokajnickih pobuda poceli odrzavati uoci svakog Uskrsa. Tâj obredni
kontinuitet u svom izvornome arhaicnom obliku odrzao se nepromjenjen, do
danas.

oratorijskog nacina prezentiranja glazbe.

kongregacija, tzv. bratovstina. Zanim1jivo je i to sto u njima ne sudjeluje
svecenstvo, vec iskljucivo puk.
Jeremije Proroka ", a zavrsava tradicionalnim, Te Deum - "Tebe Boga
hvalimo". PredstavIjajuci ovu kulturnu crkvenu bstinu nastojali smo Vam
Hrvatske uopce.

» (E) Croatian surgeons need help

Dear All,
Here's a problem I would like some insight on from my fellow Croatians . . .
I work with an internationally recognized surgeon who is now collaborating (or trying to) with prominent Croatian surgeons in Zagreb. The Croatian surgeons want him to work on a number of projects with them, attend meetings on the Adriatic coast, and speak. When he diplomatically writes to them inquiring about funding for the trips, he receives no answer. (Well, that's typical.) The surgeons talk about everything else but NEVER address the issue of funding, if it is available, where it will come from, etc. Frankly, I am sure that the people in Croatia are waiting for him to pay his own way and that is not going to happen. Anyway, he finds this extremely frustrating and doesn't know what to do, say, or how to handle this situation.
Personally, I find this extremely rude and very unprofessional behavior on the part of the Croatian surgeons. Educated Croatians are not stupid. They know the USA is not paved with gold and that we, too, have to pay our bills. And, when you invite someone to your country to offer his professional services for your benefit, you don't duck around the issue of how they are going to get there.
Any suggestions?

IBM To Build World's Most Powerful Weather Supercomputer
``Blue Storm'' Computing And Storage Infrastructure To Significantly Improve
Forecasts

ARMONK, NY--(INTERNET WIRE)--Dec 21, 2001-- IBM announced today that it has been
selected by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) to
build the world's most powerful supercomputer and storage network for weather
prediction, enabling meteorologists to offer new and much improved forecasts.
Dubbed "Blue Storm," the IBM eServer p690-based system will provide the European
National Weather Services with advanced weather information that will enhance
activities ranging from the early warning of severe storms and floods to the
optimal routing of ships at sea to the planning of family picnics.
IBM will supply ECMWF with a computing infrastructure including a supercomputer
that is projected to be about five times more powerful than ECMWF's current
systems, together with a data storage network of IBM storage servers and tape
systems as well as software that speeds the flow of data to and from the
supercomputer's thousands of microprocessors.
ECMWF's researchers will access Blue Storm via IBM IntelliStation workstations
running Linux, while researchers throughout Europe will access the system over a
wide-area network.
"Today's highly sophisticated numerical models of the world's atmosphere and
oceans require the most powerful supercomputing resources," says Dr. David
Burridge, director of ECMWF. "In addition to supplying unmatched technology, we
are confident that IBM will be a trusted partner with the skills and experience
to help us overcome many of the challenges we face in predicting the global
weather."
According to Dr. Burridge, Blue Storm will provide ECMWF with the unprecedented
level of computational power needed to make major advances in three strategic
areas:
- Exploitation of the wealth of information that will be provided
by an enhanced network of satellite observation systems. Blue
Storm will help scientists more accurately determine the
initial state of the atmosphere and oceans, thus significantly
      improving the Centre's forecasts.

    - Representation of heating and cooling, cloud formation and
dissipation, rain, snow and other processes in the Centre's
model of the global atmosphere; the model has 21 million grid
points distributed throughout the atmosphere between the
surface and a height of 65 km.

    - Improvements of the techniques developed by the Centre, and
based on chaos theory, to estimate the uncertainty in the
forecasts and the probabilities of alternative developments
over the coming week, month and season. Improved advance
warning of severe weather events anywhere on the globe is a
      specific aim of ECMWF's strategy.

"ECMWF is renowned for developing new techniques that advance the science of
meteorology," said Val Rahmani, general manager, IBM eServer pSeries, IBM Server
Group. "By pushing the boundaries of supercomputing power, IBM supplies the
organization's scientists with the tools to realize some of their most ambitious
goals."
IBM will provide ECMWF with:
- An IBM eServer [1] Cluster 1600 supercomputer built with
multiple IBM eServer p690 enterprise UNIX [2] servers. In 2002,
IBM will deliver a system capable of achieving seven teraflops,
or seven trillions of calculations per second. The
supercomputer will be expanded in stages and, when fully
installed in 2004, will achieve over 20 teraflops.

    - IBM TotalStorage products, including: FAStT500 storage servers,
SAN fabric and IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590
systems to store observational meteorological and oceanographic
      data and forecast results.

    - The High Performance Storage System (HPSS), advanced software
for data management in technical computing environments. HPSS
was developed in association with the world's most advanced
supercomputing sites, including Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory, home of IBM's ASCI White, to provide a data stream
fast enough to match the processing speed of very large
supercomputers. HPSS is designed to move large data objects
across networks at high speed between supercomputers, disks,
      and tape libraries.

ECMWF's weather forecasts are essential to many business activities, such as
routing oil tankers and cargo ships at sea, as well as demand planning for
electric utilities and manufacturers. The organization supplies meteorological
information to national weather services, which issue warnings, present daily
television weather forecasts throughout Europe, and provide specialized services
to their many commercial and governmental users.
Today's announcement highlights a powerful trend towards the use of IBM
supercomputers and storage systems to predict weather and climate changes. IBM
technology has recently been selected by the National Centers for Environmental
Prediction, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the Naval
Oceanographic Office, the National Climactic Data Center, Germany's Deutscher
Wetterdienst and other premier weather forecasting and climate modelling
organizations worldwide.

» (E) Sandra Bezic
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 02/22/2002 | Trivia | Unrated

For those not aware, one of the commentators on NBC during the Olympic
Games is Sandra Bezic, a Croatian-Canadian. Here's a short bio from the
nbc web site. John Kraljic

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sandra Bezic, a 1972 Olympian and former Canadian pairs champion, is as
an NBC figure skating analyst for the 2002 Salt Lake Games. Bezic joined
NBC Sports in 1990 as an analyst for its figure skating coverage.

NOW A SKATING CHOREOGRAPHER, she has designed programs for many top
skaters, including Brian Boitano, Katarina Witt, Kristi Yamaguchi and
Kurt Browning.
Bezic has served as the analyst on numerous NBC Sports' figure
skating events, including four World Figure Skating Championships
(1991-1993 and 1995) and the World Professional Figure Skating
Championships from 1990-1995.

Bezic skated competitively with her brother, Val, from 1967
through the mid-1970s. She and her brother won the Canadian pairs novice
title in 1967 and the Canadian senior competition four straight times
from 1970-1973.
Bezic has choreographed and/or produced more than 25 television
specials in Canada and the United States, including the Emmy
Award-wining "Carmen on Ice."
She won Gemini awards for producing Browning's "You Must Remember
This" and Brian Orser's "Night Moves." Bezic also produced the North
American Tour of "Stars on Ice" and is the author of "Passion to Skate:
An Intimate View of Figure Skating."

------------------------------------

I found a Canadian Government web site that lists that Sandra and her brother Val as Croatians. Actually they have a section entitled Croatians, check it out:
 http://collections.ic.gc.ca/heirloom_series/volume7/countries/croatia.html
Interestingly, our neighbors on the east side of Drina had one of their own write the information which included mention of chetnik war veterans. Maybe we can get a Croatian Canadian to do a more extensive and thorough write-up on the Croatian Canadian information.
Svako dobro,

Marko Mijat
