(E) Israeli investors buy (a 99-year lease) Croatian peninsula
Milin set pace for UMES' record volleyball season "Yediot Ahronot": Israeli investors buy Croatian peninsula for NIS 500mThe 502-dunam (125.5-acre) site is zoned for a hospital, a rehabilitation center, and a marina. Globes’ correspondent 25 Nov 02 11:36 The "Yediot Ahronot" Hebrew daily reports that a consortium of Israeli and foreign investors, including Adv. Amos Maimon, has purchased a 502-dunam (125.5-acre) peninsula in Croatia for NIS 500 million. The peninsula is zoned for a hospital, rehabilitation center, and a marina. Maimon was director general of President Moshe Katsav’s office for a short period. He recently initiated the construction of 1,600 housing units in Britain and Miami. Maimon said the peninsula project would be completed within five years, and hundred of employees would be recruited for the task. The luxury hospital will be for private neurological, ophthalmic, and gynecological surgery. A 100-house post surgical rehabilitation center will provide medical supervision, and will also include a renovated yacht anchorage. The hospital will include 42 operating theaters. The land was rented from the Croatian government under a 99-year lease. The investment consortium plans to bring top-flight medical personnel from all over the world to visit the center to perform surgery, in order to attract wealthy European patients. Croatia beats Romania 1-0 in friendly match
Associated Press Nov. 20, 2002 9:54 a.m. TIMISOARA, Romania (AP)— Tomislav Maric scored the only goal of the match as Croatia beat Romania 1-0 in a friendly Wednesday in the western city of Timisoara.
Romania dominated the game and pushed to pry open a crowded Croatian defense with attacks on the flanks. But Romanian strikers failed to create scoring chances in the Croatian box.
The hosts' most dangerous efforts came from powerful long distance shots by Ionel Ganea, Adrian Ilie and Dorinel Munteanu but Croatia's goalkeeper, Stipe Pletikosa, was in top form and denied their efforts.
Ganea, who plays for Stuttgart in Germany, came close to scoring in the 18th minute, but failed to lift the ball over the Croatian 'keeper.
Cosmin Contra also threatened in the 36th minute, dribbling past three Croatian defenders but then kicked weakly from 12 meters (yards) for an easy save by Pletikosa.
Croatia, which responded with dangerous counterattacks, scored in the 46th minute, when an unmarked Tomislav Maric headed home from eight meters (yards) after a free kick from the right.
Romania pressed hard for an equalizer, but it was unable to unlock the tight Croatian defense. Instead, Mario Maric could have made it 2-0 in the 84th minute on a rapid counterattack when his header from seven meters (yards) went just over the bar.
Romanian coach Anghel Iordanescu made a flurry of changes in the second half, as he tested new talent for European qualifiers next spring.
Otto Baric won his first match as coach of the Croatian team.

(E) Croatian language holds its own - NEEDS YOUR RESPONS
|
Dear Fellow Croatian-Americans:
I work in the film business and recently was doing research on a very popular internet website IMDb, Internet Movie Database. To my horror, all Croatian language films were listed as Serbo-Croatian. IMDb is a very widely used research tool for professionals and film buffs alike, the world over. Everyone uses it. Naturally, I wrote to the language department to bring their attention to the misconception. I have also written to the Embassy of Croatia to make them aware of the error and I sent IMDb evidence from the CIA website to prove they were incorrect. Obviously, they're not so much at fault as the website they use that disseminates the erroneous information. Please help me in convincing both websites that they need to make corrections. IMDb have not responded to my emails since I sent them the CIA website information. This was almost a month ago. Please be polite when responding, as I know you will be. We need to show we are civilized people and would just prefer that they correct their mistake. Unless we tell them, no one else will stand up and tell them for us.
This is a copy of the email in response to the one I sent to IMDb:
email #1:
Hello
Thank you for your message.
I'm sorry, but this is not possible at the moment.
There is no scientific evidence that these are two languages. Web sites such as
http://www.rosettaproject.org:8080/live/search/detailedlanguagerecord?ethnocode=SRC
clearly list Serbo-Croatian as one language spoken in Croatia, Federal Republic of Yougoslavia and some other countries.
Just because there are now two countries does not change anything regarding the language. Either it is one language and always was or there are two languages, in which case they were two languages even when the country was Yugoslavia. We let the ethnologists and linguists decide here. This is not a political case.
Unless there is some widely accepted scientific evidence that these are two languages, we will stick to Serbo-Croatian.
Regards,
Peter W. Simeon simeon@imdb.com
email #2:
Thank you for your feedback about the language section of the Internet Movie Database.
Language definitions used in the IMDb are based on standard linguistical conventions. According to most reputable sources, Serbian and Croatian are not two different languages. Web sites such as
http://www.rosettaproject.org:8080/live/search/detailedlanguagerecord?ethnocodeŞC
clearly list Serbo-Croatian as one language spoken in Croatia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and other countries. Serbian and Croatian may be sometimes listed as dialects but they're not considered to be distinct/separate languages.
Our aim is simply to provide generic information about the language spoken in films and our choices are solely based on linguistical, not historical or geographical, data. Based on the current scientific consensus on this topic, we'll stick to listing Serbo-Croatian as a single language.

(E) PARCELS OF LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS - from England & UK

PARCELS OF LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS Op-ed Dear All, Please respond with a kind words to this charity, as well as to one forlandmines. We need your respond to IMDb too. Croatian language is our languageand there is NO alternative. My comment is this. we cannot only complain. We have to be gratefultoo, for every word or deed that sends a message of love to Croatia andCroatians around the world. Fighting for our right should never cease. Onedoesn't exclude the other. Nenad Bach Editor -in-chief, CROWN PARCELS OF LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS MARY O'LEARY, HEATH REPORTER 12:00 - 20 November 2002
A plymouth nurse is preparing to deliver Christmas gifts to hundreds of children in Bosnia and Croatia, after her latest charity appeal produced record results. Jill Baird, who works as a theatre sister at Derriford Hospital, has managed to collect a staggering 1,370 boxes, each packed with toys and treats for youngsters in schools, hospitals and orphanages. The boxes are sent to Eastbourne, base of the Mustard Seed Relief Missions; and on December 16, Mrs Baird is flying out with a team from the appeal organisers to distribute each one personally. Mrs Baird collected the boxes after appealing to hospital colleagues and large businesses in Plymouth for help. The 41-year-old mother of two, from Eggbuckland, wrote letters to everyone at Derriford Hospital and in local NHS organisations, as well as to her neighbours, friends and to eight large companies in the city. She asked people to fill a box with toys, toiletries, pens, paper and gifts suitable for children within an age bracket of two to five, six to 11 or 12 to 15. Hospital staff responded immediately, along with city residents. Generous staff at B &Q Warehouse filled 50 boxes after Mrs Baird gave a presentation at the store. The total number of boxes collected is more than ever before. Mrs Baird said: "The response has been terrific. Three years ago we got about 65 boxes, then last year I went around the hospital and collected 1,015. This year I emailed everyone at the hospital and wrote to my neighbours and businesses in the city, and people have been brilliant, especially B &Q," she said. The campaign, known as Love in a Box, is organised by the Mustard Seed Relief Missions, based inEastbourne. The aim is to share seasonal support with children living in in Bosnia and Croatia. Mrs Baird said the campaign was vital to the youngsters who benefited. She said: "Every single box makes a difference, and that is our motto - living to make a difference. "I am going out with the team in December and we will fly to Zagreb, then travel 900 miles to distribute all the boxes directly to children. There is no halfway house: we do it all ourselves. "I have also had to raise money to pay for my flight and accommodation, and I have had fantastic support to do this."My family are behind me as well and the support and help from everyone has been immense," Mrs Baird said. "I'm really looking forward to taking the boxes out." http://www.thisisnorthdevon.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=103351&command=displayContent&sourceNode=103340&contentPK=3081458

(H) Povijesno-gurmanska putovanja
| WANDA S. RADETTI, VLASNICA NJUJOR`KE TURISTIČKE AGENCIJE SPECIJALIZIRANE ZA ISTRU I PRIMORJE | Povijesno-gurmanska putovanja Istrom i Kvarnerom | |
| © Copyright 2002NOVI LIST d.d.
