Love is what's in the room if you stop opening presents and listen

What does love mean? A group of professional people posed this question to
a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, What does love mean? The answers they got
were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you

think:

When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her
toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even
when his hands got arthritis too. That's love. Rebecca - age 8

Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and
they go out and smell each other. Karl - age 5

Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries
without making them give you any of theirs. Chrissy - age 6

Love is what makes you smile when you're tired. Terri - age 4

Love is when my Mommy makes coffee for my Daddy and she takes a sip before

giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK. Danny - age 7

Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing,
you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are
like that. They look gross when they kiss. Emily - age 8

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening
presents and listen. Bobby - age 7

If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who
you hate. Nikka - age 6

Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it
everyday. Noelle - age 7

Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends
even after they know each other so well. Tommy - age 6

During my piano recital, I was on a stage and scared. I looked at all the
people watching me and saw my Daddy waving and smiling. He was the only
one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore. Cindy - age 8

My Mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me
to sleep at night. Clare - Age 6

Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken. Elaine - age 6

Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is
handsomer than Robert Redford. Chris - age 7

Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all
day. Mary Ann - age 4

I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes
and has to go out and buy new ones. Lauren - age 4

I let my big sister pick on me because my Mom says she only picks on me
because she loves me. So I pick on my baby sister because I love her.
Bethany - age 4

When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars
come out of you. Karen - age 7

Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's
gross. Mark - age 6

You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean
it, you should say it a lot. People forget. Jessica - age 8

A four year old child's next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who
had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went
into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.
When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy
said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."

We spend more, but have less

Message by George Carlin:
The paradox of our time in history is that we have
taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways,
but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less,
we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and
smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We
have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but
less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more
medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too
recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too
angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too
little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We
have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our
values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate
too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life.
We've added years to life not life to years. We've
been all the way to the moon and back, but have
trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.
We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've
done larger things, but not better things.
We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We
write more, but learn less. We plan more, but
accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to
wait. We build more computers to hold more
information, to produce more copies than ever, but we
communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion,
big men and small character, steep profits and shallow
relationships. These are the days of two incomes but
more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These
are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway
morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and
pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to
kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom
window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when
technology can bring this letter to you, and a time
when you can choose either to share this insight, or
to just hit delete.

Remember, spend some time with your loved ones,
because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to
you in awe, because that little person soon will grow
up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug
to the one next to you, because that is the only
treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't
cost a cent.
Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and
your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and
an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep
inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the
moment for someday that person will not be there
again. Give time to love, give time to speak, and give
time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breath away.

By Nenad N. Bach | Published 09/21/2003 | Humor And Wisdom | Unrated
Dear Hilda,The point and the reason I brought up the story about "YU" has been lost. I have no hallucinations, many of us get caught up in our emotions and remain there. The fact is that most of us are not ready to see it. Many of us refuse to see it. Manyof us are attached to the stories about the dramas and to the information with which we have been fed.The truth is always that, the truth, unchangeable. Truth simply is.Our interepretation vary - in these ways:rgds, mirnaWHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? GEORGE W. BUSH We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or it is against us. There is no middle ground here. AL GORE I invented the chicken. I invented the road. Therefore, the chicken crossing the road represented the application of these two different functions of government in a new, reinvented way designed to bring greater services to the American people. RALPH NADER The chicken's habitat on the original side of the road had been polluted by unchecked industrialist greed. The chicken did not reach the unspoiled habitat on the other side of the road because it was crushed by the wheels of a gas-guzzling SUV. PAT BUCHANAN To steal a job from a decent, hard-working American. RUSH LIMBAUGH I don't know why the chicken crossed the road, but I'll bet it was getting a government grant to cross the road, and I'll bet someone out there is already forming a support group to help chickens with crossing-the-road syndrome. Can you believe this? How much more of this can real Americans take? Chickens crossing the road paid for by their tax dollars, and when I say tax dollars, I'm talking about your money, money the government took from you to build roads for chickens to cross. DR. SEUSS Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, But why it crossed, I've not been told! ERNEST HEMINGWAY To die. In the rain. Alone. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question. GRANDPA In my day, we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Someone told us that the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us. BARBARA WALTERS Isn't that interesting? In a few moments we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart-warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting and went on to accomplish its life-long dream of crossing the road. JOHN LENNON Imagine all the chickens crossing roads in peace. ARISTOTLE It is the nature of chickens to cross the road. KARL MARX It was a historical inevitability. SADDAM HUSSEIN This was an unprovoked act of rebellion and we were quite justified in dropping 50 tons of nerve gas on it. VOLTAIRE I may not agree with what the chicken did, but I will defend to the death its right to do it. RONALD REAGAN What chicken? SIGMUND FREUD The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity. BILL GATES I have just released eChicken 2003, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook and Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of eChicken. ALBERT EINSTEIN Did the chicken really cross the road or did the road move beneath the chicken? BILL CLINTON I did not cross the road with that chicken. What do you mean by chicken? Could you define chicken, please? THE BIBLE And God came down from the heavens, and He said unto the chicken, "Thou shalt cross the road." And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much rejoicing. ***************************************************** The information contained in this email and in any attachments is confidential and is designated solely for the attention and use of the intended recipient(s). Watsonville's ties run deep inside Croatia

"There was a large number of Croatians who emigrated to the Watsonville area in those days, and there's probably well over 2,000 people of Croatian descent who are still living in Santa Cruz County today," he added.

According to Ninkovich, an archivist and historian based out of Fresno, between 1900 and the start of World War I, several hundred Croatians made the arduous journey from the Konavle region, which is just south of Dubrovnik, Croatia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire), to Watsonville. "Quite a few of the early immigrants in 1870 up until 1890 settled in Jackson where they worked in the mines," Ninkovich said. "But later, groups started moving to Watsonville where they bought up many of the apple orchards. The Croatians were always better farmers than they were anything else." Ninkovich said that, for the immigrants, farming was something that was in their blood - especially having come from a land that had revolved around agriculture for roughly 2,000 years - and Watsonville seemed an ideal place to settle.

"Some of them started out packing apples and worked hard for a long time until they could save up enough money to buy their own land," he said. "The important thing is that, as a result of this migration, today there are more diaspora of Konavle in Watsonville than in any other place in the world. Every person in Konavle knows where Watsonville is - although they pronounce the name 'Vatsonville' - and many have family still living there."

Ninkovich is calling on the people of Watsonville who are of Croatian descent to assist him in his quest to collect information and photos for the Croatian Immigration History Project, which he has been volunteering his time to work on for the last couple years.

"You still see the common Croatian surnames in Watsonville like Scurich, Resetar, Lucich, Matiasevich, Secondo, Alaga, Kralj, Marinovich, Pista, Bachan, Fiorovich, Lettunich, Skocko, Bokarica and others," Ninkovich said.

All the information gathered will be donated to the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Croatian State Archives - both located in Dubrovnik - as well as to the Pajaro Valley Historical Association.

"There are really several reasons that we are doing this," Ninkovich said. "For one, we want to provide a foundation for future genealogists' research. We also want to provide a safe repository for people's photos and family histories, which often get lost or destroyed over the years. However, we'll only take copies of photos and written materials. The families and owners will keep the originals." Other reasons for the project, according to Ninkovich, include the fact that the information will help the Croatian Academy with its ongoing historical and demographical work, and could possibly be made into some sort of book in the future.

"To me, one of the most important reasons for doing this is really for the people back in Croatia, who lost most of the photos when their homes were burned and destroyed during the war in the early '90s," Ninkovich said. "Some of the most incredibly moving experiences I've had in my life have been when I've been given some of these old photos by people in the U.S. and taken them back to these families in Croatia. Many times the people cry when they are able to see a photo of their grandmother or great-grandfather or other relatives when they thought they'd lost the photos forever."

For the next few months, Ninkovich will be living in Watsonville to work on his project and is hoping people will come forward to share their stories and photos.

"Right now, we're only looking for photos and information on those who were first-generation immigrants - likely those who came here prior to 1920," Ninkovich said. "We're also focusing only on those who came from the southern-most part of Croatia - from the Peljesac Peninsula south to Montenegro - and are centering around the town of Dubrovnik."

Ninkovich added that he is more than willing to chat with others who may have questions about the project or about Croatian history in the area, or who want information about a surname.

"The connection that Watsonville has with this one region of Croatia in particular is really amazing," Ninkovich said. "I visit the region about once a year and the people all know about 'Vatsonville.' It's really unique and special."

For more information or to set up an appointment, contact Tom Ninkovich by leaving a voicemail at (559) 855-2120 or calling his local cellular phone at 818-5082. Also, information is available on the project Web site at www.croatia-in-english.com.

Our new sister-city is Vela Luka

Anacortes Croatian Club representative Sonja Rupp seals the deal with Vela Luka's Mayor Tonko Gugich
Our new sister-city is Vela Luka
Before Anacortes had an official sister city organization, it had several sister cities along the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. Families from Vis, Brac and, more than any other town, Vela Luka settled in Anacortes beginning over a century ago.
Cultural exchanges between the old country and the new have been almost routine, which might explain the delay in formalizing the relationship. Not to say that Anacortes' Croatian heritage has been taken for granted; the always active community formed the American Croatian Club of Anacortes (ACCA) and the Vela Luka dance troupe in the early 1970's.
Meanwhile, the Anacortes Sister City Organization has established official ties with Sidney, B.C.; Lomonosov, Russia and Kisakata, Japan.
Two years ago ACCA Boardmember Vlatko Kolega pointed out that it was past time for Anacortes to have an official Croatian sister-city. Since then, a committee has been researching likely towns. Naturally, attention focused on the island of Korcula, both its namesake city and Vela Luka. Croatian Club Treasurer, Sonja Rupp, made two trips to Korcula and found officials in Vela Luka much more responsive to the sister city idea; it was only last month that her meetings with Vela Luka's Mayor Tonko Gugic led to the formalization of this long-standing connection.
Back in Anacortes, Nikki Lau Lovric and her husband John Lovric, were busy getting papers signed and gifts collected, including an Anacortes flag and centennial coin and a photo of several of the descendents of Vela Luka's emigrants. Plans are already being made for a Sister City trip to Vela Luka next summer. For more information contact the Lovric's at 293-8530.

Adopt-A-Minefield E-Newsletter

This is the first edition of the Adopt-A-Minefield® E-Newsletter. This
communication will serve to provide updates on one of the world’s
leading mine action programs as well as alert you to opportunities for
you to get involved.

About Adopt-A-Minefield (AAM)

Adopt-A-Minefield is a public-private partnership between the United
Nations Association of the USA, the United Nations, Ted Turner’s Better
World Fund, and the U.S. State Department to clear minefields, provide
assistance to landmine survivors, and raise awareness of the global
landmine crisis. Since its launch in 1999, the Campaign has raised
nearly $10 million for mine clearance and survivor assistance and
cleared over 16 million square meters of land with about another 3
million currently under clearance. Adopt-A-Minefield is the only
nongovernmental funder in the top donor list in six of the most heavily
mined countries in the world, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Cambodia, Croatia, Mozambique, and Vietnam.

Third Annual Adopt-A-Minefield Los Angeles Benefit Gala

Tuesday, September 23, 2003

Goodwill Ambassadors and Patrons Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
McCartney will host the third annual Adopt-A-Minefield® Benefit Gala in
Los Angeles on Tuesday, September 23, 2003. Once again, the evening
promises to be outstanding, with exciting entertainment and inspiring
information on AAM’s important work to clear minefields, assist
survivors of landmine accidents, and raise awareness of the global
landmine crisis.

This year during the gala dinner, UNA-USA will present awards specially
designed by Paul McCartney to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones,
Bobby Muller, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation,
and the International Baccalaureate Students.

In addition, this year’s gala will mark the official rollout of the
Campaign’s annual Night of a Thousand Dinners™ initiative, which will be
held on Thursday, November 6, 2003.

For further information on the benefit gala please contact Levy,
Pazanti, and Associates at 310-201-5033.

Night of a Thousand Dinners: A Great Way to Get Involved

Night of a Thousand Dinners (N1KD) was developed so that people all over
the world could come together on a single night, enjoy a meal and take
action toward eradicating the landmine crisis. This initial idea has
since evolved and expanded to include any sort of gathering, cocktail
party, barbeque, wine tasting, tea party, luncheon, clambake, etc.
anywhere in the world on or around the first Thursday in November. A
simple concept – gathering with friends and family and building a global
community to support a common cause – N1KD has energized tens of
thousand of caring citizens and has grown into an international
phenomenon! Since its inception in 2001, nearly 2000 dinners (or
gatherings) held in over 50 countries has raised over $2.3 million.

N1KD gives people everywhere an opportunity to make a difference and its
fun! Be a part of this global community and take a step to clearing a
path to a safer world – Host a dinner!

Become an N1KD Affiliate

All UNA chapters or organizations interested in participating in the
third annual Night of a Thousand Dinners can do so by becoming an

Affiliate. The Affiliate Program enables organizations to partner with
AAM on N1KD and use the event as a marketing tool to raise awareness and
funds for their own organization. Affiliates will gain special access
to the registration database and be able to track dinners registered on
behalf of their organization.

Become an N1KD Media Ambassador

As part of this year’s promotional efforts, we are looking to identify
people willing to work with our Public Relations firm as N1KD Media
Ambassadors to promote the event through their local media. The PR firm
will identify media opportunities – television, radio, publications – in
the participating areas. As an N1KD Media Ambassador you would make
yourself available to speak on behalf of Adopt-A-Minefield. Prior to
your interview or appearance, the PR firm and AAM would provide you with
instruction on how to deal with the media and information about AAM. In
addition to raising awareness about N1KD, this is a tremendous
opportunity for you to promote your own dinner (or gathering) or local
AAM campaign, as well as your affiliate organization.

Thousand Dinners visit the website www.1000dinners.com

Minesweepers: We're Looking For a Few Good Runners!

Minesweepers® is the world's first and only running charity dedicated to
raising funds for Adopt-a-Minefield®. This group was started in the fall
of 2001 as a project of the United Nations Association-San Francisco
Chapter’s Young Professional Group. In June of 2002, 16 runners
participated in the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. Half of the team
had never run a marathon and all proudly wore finisher medals. The funds
they raised will be pooled with the funds raised from the 2003 London
Marathon to benefit a mine affected community in Vietnam.

There is currently a team of 12 runners from all over the United States
training for the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC on October 26.
We have a training program for all types or runners and will support you
both in your fundraising and training efforts. Our goal is for each
team to raise over $30,000 to clear at least one minefield. And if you
cannot participate in this event, we are looking for runners for our
next team for the Napa Valley Marathon on March 7, 2004.

Whether you want to run, sponsor a runner, or simply donate to our
program, your contribution will go a long way to making the world a
safer place to live. For further information and to make a donation,
visit www.runningtoclear.org.
Help the United States Campaign to Ban Landmines Reshape US Landmine

Policy

UNA Chapters have historically participated in political events,
especially those with an international and global agenda. Accordingly,
The US Campaign to Ban Landmines (USCBL) would like the participation of
California, Missouri, South Carolina, and Arizona chapter members in
making sure that the next administration takes responsibility for the
reality of landmine use.

Since the summer of 2001 the Bush Administration has been conducting a
formal review of US landmine policy. This is an opportunity for landmine
activists and American voters to take action and inform Presidential
candidates about the dangerous reality of landmines and impressing upon
potential candidates the urgency of prohibiting a weapon that leaves up
to 20,000 civilian dead annually.

If you are interested in participating or would like further
information, please contact Ms. Gina Coplon-Newfield, Coordinator for
USCBL, at 617-695-0041x228 or banmines@phrusa.org.

For further information on AAM or to start a campaign visit
