Marko Puljić

Marko's story is similar to those of many other Croats of his time. He was born and immediately thereafter, joined the struggle to attain Croatian independence. 

Once Croatian independence had been achieved he asked himself "now what?" and discovered life and something called the Internet. He began to experiment with websites and started to see the power and the reach of the information age. He began to see it as a tool for linking together and communicating with fellow Croats around the world.  As the potential of the Internet continued to grow he began to try and promote Croatia and Croatians using this new medium. 

Somewhere along the way he met Nenad, the future creator of Croatian World Net and was asked to participate with articles and help in general tasks. With the launch of the revised Croatian World Net website that now stands before you, he was again asked to play a role in it.  

The digital world is not exclusively Marko's medium of choice. He is an author and has had articles published in a wide array of publications from student papers to popular media like the Croatian Chronicle. Marko also has had translations published in both electronic media and in traditional print. The only thing Marko has to do is, publish a book, and he doesn't rule it out - except he doesn't know what he would write about!

Aside from the media Marko tries to keep his mind active and tries to get out as often as he can. His hobbies, or at least what he calls his hobbies, are too numerous and would potentially brand him a geek if he mentioned them.

Since his arrival in the USA in 2009, Javor Bračić (left) has performed at various venues in New York City including the Metropolitan Museum, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall and New York Historical Society. He has been heard on WQXR classical music station (the McGraw Hill Companies Young Artists Showcase) and has recently released a CD album “Tribute to Haydn” with works written by and dedicated to Joseph Haydn.

Croatians Borna Coric and Ana Konjuh (left) swept the U.S. Open juniors titles Sunday.The 15-year-old Konjuh defeated Tornado Alicia Black of the United States 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the girls’ final, adding to her Australian Open junior title this year. Coric, 16, beat Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the boys’ final.

Okay, folks, close your laptop and pick up the phone. You need to book a meal at Dubrovnik Restaurant in New Rochelle, New York, right now, this instant. Here’s the deal: this month-old Croatian restaurant has an intimate stony outdoor terrace on which its owner has built a serious, bang-up, wood-burning oven. Imagine tiny, tender, smoke scented octopus and squid, the tips of their tentacles curled lightly charred. Or a generous whole branzino, its belly stuffed with herbs, sparkling with Croatian sea salt, and still cracking from the fire. Heaven.

Thursday, August 15, 2013 the day of the Feast of the Assumption (Velika Gospa) WTTW Prime in Chicago will be rebroadcasting the documentary film called "They Never Walked Alone" that celebrates 100 years of St. Jerome Croatian parish located in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood. The film will air starting at 2:00 pm CST.

The National Federation of Croatian Americans Cultural Foundation (NFCACF) has elected a new President, Mr. Paul Tonšetić-Kunder, to succeed Mr. Bill Vergot who is retiring after serving two terms as President since 2011. Mr. Tonšetić-Kunder of Coral Springs, Florida is a third generation Croatian American originally born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Both maternal and fraternal grandparents came from Croatia in the early 1900’s (Samobor and Grubišno Polje), and they settled in the Western Pennsylvania area.

The theme for this year was protecting the environment. This year, 500 entries from 10 countries were submitted. The organizer is Ankica Karačić living in Germany, on the photo with her husband Ante.

The conference to be held from 5-7 February, 2014, honours 30 years of Croatian Studies at Macquarie University in Sydney Australia. The focus of the conference is on the development of the identity and political consciousness of Croatians in Croatia or abroad through the exploration of the construction and expression of personal and group identities of Croatians of all social classes, in all periods from the Middle Ages to the modern day. Themes include but are not limited to: identity, history, language, art, trans-national communities, literature and politics of Croatians in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and all the other places where Croatians live as a minority group or diaspora community.
