» (E) Flat Tax - The Case for Tax Reform in Croatia
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 10/31/2005 | Business | Unrated

Flat Tax - The Case for Tax Reform in Croatia

Dear friends and partners of the Adriatic Institute for Public Policy,

A new book titled, "Flat Tax - The Case for Tax Reform in Croatia"co-authored by Natasha Srdoc, MBA and Joel Anand Samy will be released by Zagreb based publisher IBS on November 9, 2005, and followed by a book tour covering key cities in Croatia. The custom designed book for Croatia includes a "Flat Tax Simulation" based on the Adriatic Institute's proposed 15% flat tax. The easy-to-read and user-friendly guide on the flat tax is intended for Croatia's taxpayers, business, media and political leaders.

The book's preface was written by Dr. Alvin Rabushka, senior fellow, Hoover Institution and Dr. Daniel Mitchell, senior fellow, Heritage Foundation. Ivan Miklos, Slovakia's deputy prime minister and finance minister made a tremendous contribution by providing a detailed report on Slovakia's tax reform, a review of the flat tax adoption (2004) and accurate and dependable results. Leaders contributing to the book project included John Willman, Chief Leader Writer and Assistant Editor of the Financial Times (UK), Peter Jungen, Venture Capitalist and President of the European Enterprise Institute (Germany), Stan Jakubek, Tax Partner of Ernst and Young (Croatia), Gunther Fehlinger, Chairman of Europeans for Tax Reform (Austria), Dr. Paul Ruebig, MEP, Austria and President of SME Global and Viktor Vresnik, Economic Reporter of Croatia's leading daily, Jutarnji list.

Croatia's Minister of Justice, Vesna Skare Ozbolt's contribution to the book project includes a special report on judicial reform initiatives combating corruption. The Minister of Justice states an encouraging message to consider the flat tax in curbing corruption and reducing the black market.

A "Flat Tax Simulation for Croatia" provides clear evidence that an immediate adoption of a 15% flat tax on personal and corporate income in Croatia will boost economic growth and increase government revenues in just one year's time. Through this simplified and fair tax system, the authors recommend a tax reduction initiative on the high VAT taxation of 22% to 15% over a three-year period of time.

Please find enclosed a PDF copy of the front cover of the "Flat Tax" book written in the Croatian language and custom designed for Croatia's taxpayers.

In this week's edition of business weekly, Lider Press, its chief editor, Miodrag Sajatovic, in a front page editorial began with the following headline: "The flat tax is knocking on PM Sanader's Door." This article is a prelude to a 2 page article that will be published in the business weekly prior to the book launch on the urgency for tax reform in Croatia with a brief overview of how the flat tax will boost the nation's economic growth.

A major grassroots flat tax campaign will continue during the month of November. A PDF format - English version will be made available by mid-November 2005.

Newly Established Croatia Credit Bureau

to Use TransUnion CRIF Technology

October 31, 2005 09:05 AM US Eastern Timezone

CHICAGO & ZAGREB, Croatia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2005--TransUnion CRIF Decision Solutions,
announced today that HROK, Croatia's first bank-established credit bureau will use its International Credit Reporting
System (iCRS) to manage its operations. iCRS is TransUnion's proprietary, state-of-the-art technology designed for
emerging credit markets and bureaus. TransUnion CRIF is a joint venture company by TransUnion and CRIF, continental
Europe's leading market player in the credit reporting and decision support systems segment. Together, TransUnion and
CRIF are the largest owners or operators of credit bureaus worldwide.

Based on a common web framework, iCRS is extremely scalable and flexible, allowing developers to modify and adjust
components of the system to meet needs of the bureau and the country in which it operates. The system was built using
some of the best technology and processes from around the globe in countries where TransUnion and CRIF operate,
including the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, Italy and throughout continental Europe.

"The beauty of iCRS for international bureaus is that it removes redundancies in processing of credit information and
eliminates the need to support disparate technologies," said Larry Howell, president of Europe and Asia, TransUnion.
"Additionally, enhancements made to the iCRS in one country can easily be shared across borders, allowing developers
throughout the world to take advantage of new technology and processes for their respective bureau."

HROK in Croatia marks the third deployment of iCRS in this year, with the first two being Thailand and Russia. "We look
at the deployment of iCRS for HROK as the first of many steps we can take together to bring additional services and
technology offerings to this market," said CRIF's Fabrizio Fraboni, director, international division. "Moreover, we are
very proud to contribute to the development of retail banking market in Croatia, making possible a future growth of credit
risk management culture, which will be a benefit for both lenders and consumers."

Founded by 20 Croatian banks under the auspices of the country's banking association, HROK represents more than 90
percent of the retail banking market.

Fifth year success for Croatia's Mljet Triathlon

by Jeff Henderson
IT Interactive Editor
This report filed October 25, 2005

Mljet Island, Croatia - The lovely island of Mljet played host to the fifth annual Mljet Half Iron Triathlon just over two weeks ago. Although Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, a half-decade of bitter fighting left the country war-weary and eager to achieve peace. In 1998, integration of separatist territories was finally completed under UN supervision, and two years later the Mljet Triathlon was born - a celebration of sport and human spirit in the wake of turmoil.

Mljet is a lovely island in the Adriatic Sea, the body of clear, turquoise water which separates Croatia from Italy. Croatia is home to dozens of national parks, many of them perched on the hundreds of islands fanning out from the coastline. The Mljet Triathlon has made its home in the National Park Mljet, on the northwestern end of skinny Mljet Island. The island, only reachable from mainland Croatia by ferry from the capital city of Dubrovnik and tourist charter boats from KorÄ?ula, Hvar, and Split, is known for inland salt lakes, rich, unspoiled forests, and collapsed caves facing the south sea.

On Oct. 2 Mljet welcomed 64 individuals and seven relay teams from eight countries for one of the most demanding races in the Balkan region. With the water temperature 22°C and the air 24°C, ideal conditions awaited the participants. For a small race, the total prize purse of €14,000 signified the dedication of the organizers to supporting its athletes.

The race owes its difficulty to the rugged terrain of the island. The bike course features two loops and 1,890 meters of ascent, and the run course subjects athletes to 400 meters of stairs at the beginning and end of each of the two loops. The elevation has its merits, though, affording views of the island and sea beyond to those who make the climb.

The women's defending champion, Svetlana Brkic from Serbia, handily claimed another title, defeating Ireland's Elena Maslova and Hungary's Fatima Kovacs. The men's winner from 2004 was not so blessed, however. Dejan Patrcevik, defending champ, took the lead in the early stages of the bike but could not hold onto it during the run, Hungarian Gyula Kis finagled the upset on the second loop of the run to take first by 14 seconds. Six minutes later, Tomas Korinek from the Czech Republic claimed third.

The relay division was won by the team led by Ana Srsen, a well-known Croatian disabled athlete who took fourth in the 400m freestyle at the 2004 Summer Para-Olympic Games, in Athens, and is a world championship bronze medalist in the 5k run and marathon. In the wake of her dominating swim skills, her team has won Mljet in each of the last two years. According to organizers, participating in local triathlons and other races is one way Srsen supports her fellow physically challenged athletes.

The next edition will be held October 8, 2006.

» (E) Mario Preskar Wins by a TKO
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 10/28/2005 | Sports | Unrated

DON KING: 'MARIO PRESKAR IS A WHITE MIKE TYSON !'

After almost 1 year, (50 weeks to be exact) 21 year-old Croatian heavyweight boxer undefeated Mario Preskar 7-0-1 (218 lbs.) won in Dusseldorf, Germany on Saturday, October 15, 2005. Working very fast, Preskar exposed much heavier opponent Vlado Szabo (242 lbs) in 2 quick rounds scoring a TKO win. Szabo could not answer the bell at the start of third round after being knocked down by a vicious uppercut at the end of the round two. 'I started working my jab, and was breaking down his guard. Then I went head, body, head and I was really opening him up. It was just a matter of time,' said jubilant Preskar. 'I waited a really long time for this match, but after a tremendous training camp I’m much stronger, as fast and more explosive. I want to fight anybody that my manager schedules.' Leonard Pijetraj who is a former world-class competitor and Preskar’s manager/trainer urged Preskar’s promoter Don King to visit Croatia at the invitation of President Stjepan Mesic and Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic. King promoted over 500 world championship fights so far. Nearly 100 boxers have earned $1 million or more in Don King Productions promoted fights so far.

'Croatians are beautiful people, who have alone won their independence," said King. American promoter is convinced that Mario Preskar has tremendous potential and that one day he will be a World Heavyweight Champion. The real reason for King’s visit to Croatia is to promote Preskar’s matches and to negotiate a TV contract. Don King set all kinds of viewing records with TV, pay-per-view TV and close circuit TV. Public wants raw puncher, aggressive fighting style and that is just what Preskar has. During his 15 months over 2 years in the United States Preskar sparred with some of the biggest names in Heavyweight division and according to his trainer Pijetraj won over 90% of rounds. Don King people closely watched many of those sparring sessions. They know what they have in Preskar. With the right TV contract that is already agreed to in principle we are going to see a lot more of Mario Preskar. His next fight is scheduled for November 26, 2005 in Leverkusen, Germany.
