EUROPEAN THROWING COMPETITION - CROATIA
Second European Athletic Winter Throwing Competitions Pula, Croatia, 9-10 March

Recently married Shelley Newman gave a new meaning to the cliche "something borrowed" before winning the supporting discus competition in the European Throwing Competition in Croatia.

Newman's kit - and the rest of her luggage - failed to materialise so the former Shelley Drew, who last month wed fellow international thrower Lee Newman, quickly borrowed the necessary accoutrement from team officials and fellow athletes.

Team leader John Trower said: “She borrowed bits from pretty well everybody. She had my sweat-top, Zoe Derham's throwing shoes, and a few items from Ian Cole, our physio."

It proved a winning combination as Newman of Belgrave Harriers won her 'B' competition with a throw of 56.80 metres after fouling her first two efforts. Overall when taking into consideration the 'A' group results she was placed seventh overall.

Philippa Roles finished fourth and 15th overall with a best effort of 53.90 metres.

British record holder Lorraine Shaw placed third in the hammer competition. The Sale Harrier threw 64.81 metres - 28 centimetres better than she achieved in her first competition of the year in South Africa nine days earlier.

Derham swept dramatically from ninth in Group B to third with a final effort of 59.20 metres - a metre-and-a-half of short the personal best the Birchfield Harrier set last summer.

Joanne Duncan of Woodford Green finished fourth in the 'B' shot with a best effort of 15.62 metres. In the men's discus her clubmate Emeka Udechuku placed third throwing 58.64 metres.

Former world junior javelin champion David Parker placed 10th in the 'A' javelin competition. The Shaftesbury Harrier threw 67.48 metres in the first round.

» (E) European 'Spirit of Cricket' Weekend in Croatia

EDO visits Croatia & Slovenia8 March 2002
http://www-uk.cricket.org/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/CURRENT/110076_ECC_08MAR2002.html

The EDO travelled to Zagreb on 23/24 February to conduct Croatia's first coaching course. The course was pitched at introductory level and eight people attended over the weekend. The course ran smoothly and all the participants showed some reasonable knowledge and worked hard over the two-day period.

The course itself was staged at the University in one of the many adequate sports halls. Croatia have been given their own ground on the same campus. The EDO inspected the area and recommendations were made and support granted in preparation for the start of the season and for the MCC Tour due to take place this summer.

The EDO then travelled on to Slovenia to meet with Ljubljana CC's Alasdair Green. On the Monday morning a meeting was held with the local schools' programme manager to discuss exciting plans to introduce cricket into twelve local schools.

This would be a tremendous breakthrough. The EDO also inspected the ground and pitch and, once again, support will be provided to improve the various facilities in preparation for the MCC tour. The trip was extremely worthwhile and it was extremely encouraging to see the good work that is taking place in this part of Europe.

» (E) Croatia and government bask in Janica's victory

Croatia’s citizens as well as the government bask in Janica Kostelic’s triumph at Winter Olympics.

by Lovorka Kozole

ZAGREB, Croatia--Croatia has few top international athletes and even fewer Olympic medals. In particular, the country has had almost no success in winter sports. But all that changed dramatically with the feats of one 20-year-old woman from Croatia’s capital of Zagreb. Janica Kostelic--winner of four Olympic medals in the Salt Lake City Games and last year’s overall and slalom World Cup titles--is now taking Croatia and the sporting world by storm.

Last year’s triumph had already elevated her to the status of a national sporting hero, but Kostelic always maintained that she had considered winning an Olympic medal the ultimate challenge. It’s possible that she got that particular affinity from her father, Ante, who is a former international handball player and a coach. He turned to skiing later in life and has been coaching Janica and her brother Ivica since their childhood.

But even her father probably never expected that Janica would make her Salt Lake experience one for the record books. Kostelic won three gold and one silver medal--golds in the slalom, combined event, and giant slalom and a silver medal in super giant slalom.

Her wins are all the more surprising in light of her March 2001 skiing accident. Kostelic was seriously injured when she tore four ligaments in her right knee in a world alpine skiing championships crash. The injuries kept her off the World Cup tour until late December. To compound matters, Kostelic required emergency treatment for back pain just before going to Salt Lake City. The condition forced Kostelic to withdraw from training in Austria to undergo physical therapy. Going off to Salt Lake City, she said: “I’ll be ready for anything. If I don’t win this time, I have another chance in four years in Turin.”

But the strong-willed and rather modest woman made headlines in Salt Lake City anyway, becoming the “Croatian Sensation”--as the media often described her--making history as the first alpine skier to win four Olympic medals in a single Winter Olympic Games. "I'm happy, but records are made to be broken. Someone else will break my record soon," Kostelic said.

The four medals put Kostelic in very elite company. The only other skiers ever to win three gold medals at a single Olympics are Austria's Toni Sailer, in 1956, and France's Jean-Claude Killy, in 1968.

Kostelic’s win in the giant slalom race was particularly impressive. She was not considered a front-runner, ranking only 30th in giant slalom on the World Cup circuit. She had never finished higher than fourth in a World Cup giant slalom race.

“She proved that mentally she's the strongest--she's incredible. She can really ski with the pressure on her," Swedish skier Anja Paerson said about Kostelic.

» (E) CROATIA'S BUSTED ENRON DEALS

Enron's Busted Croatian Deal Feb. 5, 2002

By Dr. Tomislav Sunic

ZAGREB, Feb. 5 - Further to our report about Enron's busted deal with
Croatia's late president, Franjo Tudjman (see Item 2 of this TiM Bulletin),
here is a piece by Dr. Tomislav (Thomas) Sunic, who contributed this
comment to TiM from Zagreb, Croatia. Dr. Sunic holds a PhD in political
science. He is a former US professor and author of several books.

"The former Croatian government under the late president Franjo Tudjman was
eager to cut the deal with the US energy giant Enron. The reason behind it
was its eagerness to obtain favor of the Clinton's administration.
Accordingly, Enron was supposed to build a huge power plant in tiny Croatia
and supply the country with cheap energy. A Croat-American lady and
self-proclaimed "lobbyist," Ms. Zdenka Gast, quite vocal in the Croat media
during Tudjman's reign, played a role as a mediator between Enron and the
Croatian government.

Later on, with the arrival to power in January 2000 of the new
neo-communist liberal government in Croatia, the deal was unilaterally
scrapped. The new Croatian government allegedly viewed it as detrimental to
Croatian economy. But this was, apparently just a minor move in a larger
effort to distance itself from Tudjman's legacy - both the good and the bad
one. Zdenka Gast, disappeared from the public view and one has not heard from
her ever since. Today, there is a great deal of media silence in Croatia
about the role of Croat politicians in the Enron scandal. One can speculate
with good reason that other local movers and shakers in the former and
current Croat government were involved, or better, yet may have received
hefty kick-backs from the giant? At the time of the signing of the Enron deal,
a prominent go-between-man was Mr. Goran Granic, who survived the
government purges upon the arrival of the new leftist-liberal government
in 2000. Granic even made it to the top as the Vice Prime Minister in the new
government. As an old Balkan proverb goes, "one hand washes the other."
It is worth noting that Goran Granic is a brother of the former Tudjman
minister of foreign affairs, Mate Granic, a largely incompetent stuttering,
greasy-palmed politician, displaying an extraordinary penchant for
enriching himself, his extended family and his cronies.
At the time of the signing of the Enron deal, William Montgomery was the US
Ambassador to Croatia. After the unilateral scrapping by the deal in 2000
by the new Croat government, Montgomery did not hide his fumed anger. But
since the subsequent surfacing of the Enron wheeling and dealing in the
USA, Montgomery, now a US Ambassador to Yugoslavia, remains pretty tacit.
For its unilateral breach of contract, the Croat government has had to pay
fines to Enron, although nobody in Croatia knows how big was the penalty
tab. One thing remains certain, though. Since January of this year, Croat
citizens' electricity bills have doubled."

Date: February 12, 2002

Dear Editor

I was quite appalled by Andrea Feldman's article "Croatia indifferent to Milosevic Trial".

It is hardly surprising that the ICTY is not overly reported in Croatia. After all, the ICTY has spectacularly failed to convict a single person for the mass slaughter of over 15, 000 Croats by Serbs during the 1991-5 Serbian invasion and one third occupation of Croatia . The ICTY seems more occupied with promoting the discredited "all sides equally guilty" theory.

She also seems concerned that the Croatian media is not uncritically putting out material provided by the Tribunal and international organisations.

As a Liberal, Ms Feldman should surely know that the media's job is not to act as an uncritical conduit for any organisation's PR guff, be it from the Tribunal's "outreach" programme or the SENSE agency which claims that its main objective "is to provide to media and public in South East Europe objective, timely and comprehensive information about policies and objectives concerning the region, by main bodies of the international community, such as the European union and its institutions...." . The same international community that once supported Slobodan Milosevic?

It seems to me that - in this regard at least - the Croatian media is doing its public a service by taking something of an independent line. Very much similar with what we enjoy in Western Europe, where the public do not expect its media to parrot any International Community line.

Ms Feldman should grasp that in a democracy, the media can put out what it likes. As a senior member of a party of the ruling coalition it is most unseemly for her to demand what the media should or should not be reporting. Most illiberal.

Indeed, I find it considerably disconcerting that you carry such views. Especially, as given that you are funded by the British government and the European Union, I pay for the IWPR via my taxes.

However, I note that the editor in chief of SENSE is one Mirko Klarin. Could this Mirko Klarin be related in any way to the IWPR's senior editor at the ICTY, also called Mirko Klarin? If so, why was this not mentioned when Ms Feldman criticised Croatian television for not carrying SENSE coverage?

Yours sincerely,

Brian Gallagher

Dear ...

Croatians abroad are furious when reading articles and editorials in
well-known newspapers and magazines that not only criticize Croatia, but
also spread complete lies that are obvious products of Serbian propaganda.
We are appalled that the Croatian government, its ambassadors and
representatives are not responding to these lies, and in that way allowing
Croatia to receive a bad image abroad.

I am sending you a copy of an article:...... I hope and, indeed, expect that
you will publicly respond and denounce this slandering of Croatia.

Respectfully

njegov hedonizam i kontemplacija ponajbolje su se pronasli u
poznatim Peicevim >Skitnjama<.

Pozega je desetljecima bila puna Matka Peica, no i on je bio
pun Pozege, a sve sto je napisao bila je oda zivotu, ali i
covjeku. U opusu Matka Peica sveucilisnog profesora i
akademika ostalo je 35 knjiga, vise od 1000 putopisa i eseja,
te brojne, jos nedovoljno poznate slike. Za Pozegu, grad
njegove mladosti i ljubavi njegova zivota Matko Peic je
zapisao: >Za mene Pozega predstavlja najdublji inspirativni
cinilac u mom radu i to kao slikara i kao knjizevnika. U
Pozegi sam stekao svoju metodu osnovanu na karakteristikama
pozeskog pejzaza<.

» (E) About IAESTE and IAESTE Croatia

WHAT IS IAESTE?

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experiences the biggest international organization for the exchange of students according to the number of trainings exchanged. It’s non-political, independent non-governmental organization which maintains a consultative relationship with different agencies of the UN and also contacts ECA, FAO, OAS, EU as well as many educational non-governmental organizations.

WHEN WAS IAESTE FOUNDED?

The Association was founded in January 1948 in London by the National organizations of ten European countries which were also the first members. During years, number of members increased not only in Europe but throughout the world.

WHERE IS IAESTE PRESENT TODAY?

IAESTE organization is present in more than 60 countries round the world where IAESTE organizations are either full members of the international IAESTE (51 countries including IAESTE Croatia) or associate members (5 countries). There are also co-operating institutions.

WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF IAESTE?

The basic aim is to provide students at institutions of higher education with technical experience abroad relative to their studies (to widen and improve their knowledge), to promote international understanding and goodwill amongst the students of all nations, irrespective of race, color, sex or creed, to operate the exchange program for the benefits of students, academic institutions and other organizations offering traineeship.

HOW DOES IAESTE OPERATE?

It’s the confederation of National Committees which represent academic, industrial, student spheres of interest. Each national Committee is responsible for the administration of the exchange in its own country. The representatives participate on the annual General Conference where issues related to the management of the organization are discussed and the exchange of the training offers is conducted. The annual number of the exchanged trainings is higher than 6000. Before the General Conference all the members are obliged to collect the offers from the employers willing to receive foreign students fro a temporary training period. The offers have to be closely connected to the fields of study as a supplement to their university or college education. The offering companies or institutions are expected to pay students a wage sufficient to cover the costs of living during training period. The exchange is done on reciprocal basis and National Secretariats select qualified students according to specifications of the employer stated on the training offers. Details of candidates selected are sent to the employers for approval and then they decide if they accept the student nominated or not.

WHEN WAS IAESTE CROATIA FOUNDED?

IAESTE is present in Croatia since 1952. During the process of Croatia becoming an independent state, IAESTE Croatia was formed under the sponsorship of the University of Zagreb. Today IAESTE Croatia is a full member of the international IAESTE organization (since 1993).

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TILL NOW?

During past four years, training offers were given to 200 students from Croatia who traveled to Austria, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Malta, Norway, Sweden and other countries. The periods were from 4 weeks to 12 months. Students were able to gain new experience related to their future profession improve foreign languages, meet people and different cultures.

WHO IS IAESTE CROATIA?

The existence of the IAESTE Croatia is insured by volunteer work of students who are collecting training offers and sponsorships, organizing summer reception for foreign students coming to Croatia and doing administration or any other kind of work. Today IAESTE Croatia is present on all four Croatian Universities (Osijek, Rijeka, Split and Zagreb) through Local Committees.

ORGANIZATION OF IAESTE CROATIA

With the aim of improving our work, volunteers in the IAESTE Croatia are devided into 4 groups of which each has its own field of work. They co-operate if necessary. Each group in every Local Committee has its own coordinator - one of them is also a coordinator for the whole IAESTE Croatia.

The most important work in the IAESTE, for which it exists, is to collect and then to exchange as many training offers as possible. Of course, it all takes lots of time and effort and work which includes hundreds of phone calls, faxes, letters etc. This work is done by the Administration Group.
Our work is partly sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Croatian Universities, but it’s still not enough for financing our work so we have to search for sponsors and organize presentations named "Career Day". This important work is done by the Finance Group.
The Marketing Group is dealing with publishing IAESTE Newsletter and other publications, as well as contacting media with the aim of presenting the organization and work that has been done.
To foreign students who come to Croatia, certain food and accommodation level has to be offered. They are supposed to be waited for at the Station or Airport, taken to work on a first day and entertained which means that meetings and excursions and one day trips are organized so that their stay in Croatia remains memorable. This is the task of the Summer Reception Team.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE PLANS OF IAESTE CROATIA?

No matter what has been done till now, the aim of the organization’s work is still going to be higher and more qualifying level of the training offers exchanged, better promotion of IAESTE Croatia and Croatia as a country worldwide, organizing meetings for both students and employers. This is the one way for students, future employers, to realize present problems in Croatia today and determine possibilities which can improve conditions in Croatian Economy by their knowledge and experience.
