» (E) Croatians in London No.3
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/5/2004 | Community | Unrated

Croatians in London Newsletter No. 3 November 2004

Welcome to the third issue of Croatians in London. CIL appears in the first week of every month.

This month: Vanessa Redgrave opens the Croatian Film Festival, and 'Tu' is screened at the London Film Festival. And: Exclusively for CIL - an interview with Cardinal Bozanic, Archbishop of Zagreb during his visit to the UK.

Vanessa Redgrave opens the Croatian Film Festival.

The 'Closer Croatia' Croatian Film Festival, held over 7-10 October at the Riverside studios turned into the most important Croatian cultural event in UK this year, and indeed the world - outside of Croatia itself.

Indeed, the Riverside staff were delighted by the high attendance at the festival. The opening night was sold out as was the last night of the festival.

The festival generated much media coverage, being covered in London's Metro and Time Out. It was featured in Croatia as well, including Croatian Television's main bulletin, Voice of Croatia, Nacional and Hina. There was even some controversy in the Croatian media when invited guest director Antun Vrdoljak did not gain a visa from the British embassy in Zagreb to attend the festival.

Director Dalibor Matanic attended the screening of 'Fine Mrtve Djevojke' (Fine Dead Girls) and answered questions from the audience with the help of Croatian film critic Jurica Heidl.

The last night was highly memorable. The double bill of 'Rondo'/'He Who Sings Means No Harm' was sold out, with many not able to get a ticket. He Who Sings Means No Harm was the undoubted hit of the weekend. Stars Relja Basic and Mirjana Bohanec were in attendance and gave a Q and A at the end. To huge applause, Bohanec broke into song!

The festival was organised by the Croatian Students and Young Professionals Network, with help from the Croatian Embassy. Will there be another one? CIL understands its already being considered.

Tu

Croatian cinema was also represented at the London Film Festival on October 27/8. Two screenings of the film 'Tu' (Here) were screened at the ICA and the National Film Theatre. Director Zrinko Ogresta answered questions at the screening CIL attended on the 27th.

Exclusive: Interview with Cardinal Josip Bozanic

His Eminence Cardinal Josip Bozanic, Archbishop of Zagreb visited the United Kingdom to attend the assembly of the presidents of the Council of European Episcopal Conferences (CCEE), in Leeds at the beginning of the month. He also gave a very well attended Croatian mass in London, organised by the Croatian Catholic mission. CIL caught up with him for a few words.

CIL: Tell us something about the conference in Leeds, and Croatia's place in the EU?
Cardinal Bozanic: Croatia has been part of the conference for a long time, since the beginning. It encompasses all the councils in Europe. I testified that Croatia is open to the European Union, especially the youth. Croatia sees in Europe its own future and rejoices in being an EU candidate.

What does his Eminence think of the proposed EU constitution, in relation to the debate over its representation of Christianity?
The document itself has a few elements that refer to Christianity in it. There are many values in it promoted by the gospel such as human dignity. The church is explicitly mentioned and recognises the church as an institution. The church and other religious communities can make agreements with secular authorities. Sections 151 and 152 are especially important, referring to what I just said. However, christian roots are not specifically mentioned. The document has good sides but certain things could be embellished. But the document is done.

How do you find England and London?
This is not my first time in this country. The people are cultured, friendly and open. I respect the culture and history of England.

Do you have a message for Croats in England?
For young people, I wish all the best in their studies and education. Those who are specialists and return to Croatia will be an asset for the country.

CIL thanks Father Berisic at the Croatian Catholic Mission for making the interview possible.

Croatian owned horse Diva's double makes Cup history

Croatian Owned horse becomes the first mare to win the Melbourne Cup twice in its 143-year history in the race that stops a nation.

Diva's double makes Cup history
November 2, 2004 - 3:16PM
Makybe Diva has made history, winning her second consecutive Melbourne Cup.
The mare ridden again by Glen Boss and trained by Lee Freedman, stormed home on the inside in the final straight to snatch the race from Vinnie Roe. In wet, squally conditions, the two giants of the race battled it out to the end, with Zazzman coming in third in the $4.5 million race. Makybe Diva, originally trained by David Hall before being taken over by Lee Freedman, also won the race last year.
Speaking after the race, Boss said he wasn't a legend - the legend was Makybe Diva.
"I'm just the lucky bastard who's sitting on her back."
Clearly emotional, the star jockey is normally one to joke and shrug off the pressure but he said he was feeling it this time. "That was just amazing. I've never felt anything like that before.
"...When I got within 600m she just moved inside them and I was in a little world of my own; it was a walk in the park."
The mare gets her name from the first two letters of the women who work in the owners' office: Marie, Kylie, Belinda, Diane and Vanessa.

More on Croatian Diva coming soon. Thank you Robert Brizar.

Laughter is best defense against bungling robber

ZAGREB,Croatia (AP) -- A bank clerk didn't need a weapon to ward off a would-be robber. When the masked man pulled out a gun, she just laughed in his face.

The suspect was so humiliated he ran away.

The bungled holdup occurred Thursday at a small bank on Zagreb's main square, police said.

The 31-year-old clerk, identified only as Martina S., "laughed aloud" at the threat from the bandit because she knew she was protected by a bulletproof glass, said Gordana Vulama, a police spokeswoman.

Zagreb Guitar Quartet mesmerizes audience in India

Croatian troupe regales audience in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Oct 18: Music not only transcends languages and borders but also helps in unifying people belonging to different race and culture.

A classic example to this may be the rendition by a guitar troupe from Croatia at the temple town of Orissa.

The performances by the Zagreb Guitar Quartet mesmerized the audiences. Apart from the traditional Croatian folk numbers, compositions by 17th century German maestro Johann Sebastian Bach and Spanish Gypsy music were widely appreciated by the assembled spectators.

Though the music was incomprehensible to almost everybody in the audience, yet it strummed many a strings several hearts

The artists themselves were very much touched by the warmth and receptiveness of the audience.

" I liked very much the audience. I think they liked our music and we felt their energy," said Milita, one of the artists.

Officials are also very pleased at the increasing cultural exchange taking place and are of the opinion that such exchanges will encourage local tourists to perform abroad as well.

" This is cultural exchange. Orissa is very rich in art and culture. The Indian council of cultural relation and the department of culture Orissa government jointly organised this. The troupe is from abroad and the people of Orissa should enjoy the benefits. It will encourage our artists," said Damodar Rout, Culture Minister. (ANI)

Croatia to step up cooperation with China: PM

ZAGREB, Oct. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Croatia's Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said here Wednesday his country is willing to step up all-around cooperation with China.

At a meeting with Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Sanader said that he welcomed the exchange of visits by top leaders of the two countries and that he wishes to strengthen and further develop friendship with the CPC.

His government will always stick to the one-China policy, Sanader said.

On his part, Liu said China and Croatia have witnessed sound development in political and economic ties.

Liu noted that the two countries share a common view on many important international issues and China will further expand trade with Croatia and push forward bilateral cooperation in various fields.

Liu is currently on a three-nation tour which started in Azerbaijan and will also take him to Romania

» (E) We swore we'd always remember...no retreat and no surrender
By Nenad N. Bach | Published 11/1/2004 | Politics | Unrated

We have produced this special video -- only available online -- highlighting the important themes of our campaign.

Please forward this email to 10 friends.

Dear Nenad,

During this campaign I have asked you for so much -- your time, your energy, and your financial support. Today, I ask you for one final thing -- your vote.

Tomorrow, Americans will face a choice.

How will we find our way forward? How will we keep America safe, and keep the American dream alive?

I believe we begin by giving this country we love a fresh start. This morning, I would like to give you as a plainly as I can the summary of my case on how -- together -- we can change America.

I believe we begin by moving our economy, our government, and our society back in line with our best values.

I believe we do whatever it takes to lead our troops to success and bring them home safe. And when they do come home, I believe we begin by rebuilding an America with a strong middle class where everyone has the chance to work and the opportunity to get ahead.

Tomorrow, you can choose a fresh start. You can choose a president who will defend America and fight for the middle-class.

You can choose between four more years of George Bush's policy to ship jobs overseas and give tax breaks to the companies that do it -- or a president who will reward the companies that create and keep good jobs here in the United States of America.

Tomorrow you will face a choice between four more years of George Bush's giveaways to the big drug companies and the big HMOs -- or a president who will finally make health care a right, and not a privilege, for every American.

This election is a choice between four more years of tax giveaways for millionaires along with a higher tax burden for you -- or a president who will cut middle-class taxes, raise the minimum wage, and make sure we guarantee women an equal day's pay for an equal day's work.

Tomorrow, America faces a choice between four more years of an energy policy for big oil, of big oil, and by big oil -- or a president who finally makes America independent of Mideast oil in ten years. A choice between George Bush's policy that just yesterday showed record profits for oil companies and record gas prices for American consumers. I believe that America should rely on our own ingenuity and innovation, not the Saudi Royal family.

Tomorrow this campaign will end. The election will be in your hands. If you believe we need a fresh start in Iraq; if you believe we can create and keep good jobs here in America; if you believe we need to get health care costs under control; if you believe in the promise of stem cell research; if you believe our deficits are too high and we're too dependent on Mideast oil then I ask you to join me and together we'll change America.

I ask for your vote and I ask for your help. When you go to the polls bring your friends, your family, your neighbors. No one can afford to stand on the sidelines or sit this one out.

And in return for your hard work, you have my commitment to always fight for you, to always be on your side. In the words of Bruce Springsteen that have become the theme of this campaign. "We've made a promise we swore we'd always remember...no retreat and no surrender."

Tomorrow we will change America and with your help I will always keep that promise to you.

Thank you,

John Kerry

Croatian's Fine Form Continues

Tamara BOROS, currently the highest ranked European female player

XIAOSHAN, Zhejiang Province, Oct. 27 --
Croatia’s Tamara BOROS, currently the highest ranked European female player on the ITTF Women’s World Ranking list, started the first day of play in the Bosideng Multiglory Women’s World Cup in Xiaoshen, by beating the reigning European champion, Otilia BADESCU of Romania.

The result undoubtedly gave her confidence for in the evening session of play she beat the player ranked five places higher in than her in the World Rankings, the World number three, NIU Jianfeng of China.

Tamara BOROS ended the opening day's play unbeaten
The result undoubtedly gave her confidence for in the evening session of play she beat the player ranked five places higher in than her in the World Rankings, the World number three, NIU Jianfeng of China.

Winner of the Volkswagen Grand Finals last year and the reigning Asian champion, NIU Jianfeng was beaten in four straight games 11-9, 12-10, 11-4, 11-8; the Croatian’s powerful topspin play proving the dominant factor.

`I wasn't in my best form but I felt NIU Jianfeng was in an even worse form; it was important that I won the first two games’, said BOROS. `I became more confident and started play in a more relaxed way.’

`I‘m in a tough group together with NIU Jianfeng, LAU Sui Fei and Otilia BADESCU’, she added. `What I expect in the World Cup is to play step by step and to win point by point.’ The victory almost guarantees BOROS a place I the quarter-finals whilst for NIU Jianfeng, the runner up last year, the chances of repeat appearance in the second stage have all but evaporated.

NIU Jianfeng lost her first match of the day to Hong Kong’s LAU Sui Fei, who in the evening session of play was beaten by Otilia BADESCU, and even if the Chinese star beats Otilia BADESCU her fate relies on the result of the Tamara BOROS versus LAU Sui Fei encounter.

Meanwhile, the Olympic champion recorded her second win of the day beating Singapore’s LI Jia Wei as did GAO Jun of the USA and Viktoria PAVLOVICH of Belarus; the former beat the Dominican Republic’s WU Xue whilst the latter’s defensive skills proved too consistent for Nigeria’s Funke OSHONAIKE.

Beacuse blood is thinner than oil - don't vote for our cousin!

"Bush Relatives for Kerry" grew out of a series of conversations that took place between a group of people that have two things in common: they are all related to George Walker Bush, and they are all voting for John Kerry. As the election approaches, we feel it is our responsibility to speak out about why we are voting for John Kerry, and to do our small part to help America heal from the sickness it has suffered since George Bush was appointed President in 2000. We invite you to read our stories, and please, don't vote for our cousin!

http://www.bushrelativesforkerry.com/pages/1/index.htm

BushRelativesForKerry.com urges visitors: "Please, don't vote for our cousin."
The Bush relatives said they've never met the president but disagree with his policies ranging from the war in Iraq to the environment. Bush second cousin and co-creator Sheila House said she doesn't believe the effort is a betrayal. The people behind the Web site are all grandchildren of Mary Bush House, the sister of Prescott Bush, who was the father and grandfather of the two Bush presidents. That makes them second cousins of the president. The Bush campaign hasn't commented.
