THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL 'ZADAR TEEN FESTIVAL'
Mediamix is a record label company in Zadar that also has a marketing agency department that does various marketing and PR services as well as events.
We have recognized the need of organizing the first teen festival for young people from 12 to 19 since there was no such happening in this region. There are only a few smaller festivals for children of up to 12 years of age and once those children turn 12 they have no where to continue performing and developing in music sense.
The festival had two semifinal evenings, and the finals were held on 26th of April in Croatian national theatre in Zadar.
Our first idea was to have only one festival evening with 24 contestants. But when we started auditioning in January there were over 60 applicants and there were so many of them that were above average that we decided to admit 40 contestants and make two semifinals with 20 contestants each evening, and out of those 40 select 20 that will enter the finals.
We wanted to make a real festival for young people, something where they can have a chance to really learn and gain experience and confidence. Therefore we decided to also make a competition for authors as well, to write new and original songs that will suit the ages of our contestants. So, our young singers had to go through an entire process just like the grown up singers do. They had to listen to the raw song info (usually sang by an author only with a bare melody of a guitar or a piano), make a decision on which song to pick for themselves and then start learning the song and coming to studio and watch gradually an entire process of creating a song that they would later present live in front of the large audience and TV cameras. It was a long process and a lot of work but in the end it was worth it because the children’s happy faces and pride were our biggest reward.
Initially, we thought to make a regional festival but very soon the word got around and we started to get applications from all over Croatia, and finally an application from one contestant from Hamburg, Germany, and one from Vancouver, Canada. Unfortunately, the contestant from Hamburg could not make it to the festival due to the festival dates and the school obligations but announced her participation in the next years Zadar teen festival. The contestant from Canada, Tatiana Banden, came to Croatia and entered the festival and this way, the festival became an International event. Tatiana's trip all the way to Croatia proved to be worth it since she became our very first ZADAR TEEN FEST 2008 GRAND PRIX WINNER.
Zadar is known after its long and rich music and famous singer tradition. The famous Zadar performers known around the world are Tomislav Ivcic, Emilija Kokic i grupa Riva, Mladen Grdovic, Bepo Matesic, klapa Intrade and many others. With organizing this festival we want to continue this tradition and help create the new generation of music talents. We also wish to make this festival a widely known event that will each year gather people from all over the world in a 3000 year old historical town of Zadar and in this way also be a promotion of our city and Croatia as a whole.
The final evening was hosted by a national singer and the only Croatian Euro song Winner in 1989. Emilija Kokic and her small helper Valentina Plesa (8) who also participated in one children’s festival a year earlier. After all contestants sang their songs there was a 10 min. break after which the Zadar dance ensemble performed a Broadway sketch from musical ' Cats'.
After that Emilija Kokic did a block of her songs as well as the winner song from 1989 Euro song contests 'Rock me'. At the end of this entertainment block the little co-host Valentina Plesa sang a song 'Bube su u glavi' (originally sang by Tatiana Matejas – 1990) that Valentina sang on the Zemunik festival in summer of 2007.
After that the jury handed over the votes and the results were presented.
The qualified jury consisted of:
1. Tatjana Zoric (music professor) – jury president
2. Marko Barancic (music professor) – art director of the festival
3. Zoran Jelenkovic (famous Zadar singer and song writer)
4. Dario Terzin (Front man of the Rockatansky band and a radio host for the Novi radio)
5. Sanja Petrovski (music professor and a choreographer)
