AMBER ALERT issued for missing girl in Missoula

Oct 18, 2007 11:30 AM EDT

Reporting from KPAX in Missoula

Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for a missing girl who police in Missoula say may be endangered. Annie Plenkovich, 17, went missing from the Missoula Public Library on Wednesday afternoon and authorities tell us she has the mental capacity of a 12 or 13 year old. She's described as being 5'3" tall, weighing 124 pounds and was last seen wearing blue jeans with the legs rolled up, blue sneakers, a purple or pink reversible jacket and a green striped shirt. She also has facial acne and hazel colored eyes.

Plenkovich was last seen doing her homework at the Missoula Public Library around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday and officials say a librarian saw her with the possible suspect who had been helping her at the library before she left. Police describe the suspect as a white male in his 30's or 40's with thinning hair with glasses. He was last seen wearing blue jeans with an unzipped jacket, and a light colored T-shirt.

Annie was born in Croatia, but speaks English softly. If you have any information on her whereabouts call the Missoula Police Department in Montana or 911 immediately.

    Amber Alert girl found safe
By TRISTAN SCOTT, Missoulian - 10/19/07

A developmentally delayed teenage girl who went missing on Wednesday is safe after police tracked her to the Missoula home of a 38-year-old man she met over the Internet.

The disappearance of 17-year-old Annie Plenkovich triggered an Amber Alert late Wednesday, but police developed their pivotal lead after speaking with friends and family members from Oklahoma, where Plenkovich resides and developed an online relationship with the Missoula man.

According to Missoula Police Lt. Mike Brady, authorities obtained the man’s telephone number and traced it to his home on River Road, where they located the girl.

Brady said it does not appear that a crime has occurred, although authorities are still trying to determine the extent of the girl’s mental capacity before closing the investigation. Family members told authorities the girl functions at the level of a 12-year-old.

“On the surface, there does not appear to have been a crime,” Brady said during a press conference Thursday at City Hall.

The age of sexual consent in Montana is 16 years old, but if sexual intercourse did occur, and police determine that Plenkovich’s capacity to consent was diminished, criminal charges might still be a factor, Brady said.

The man, whose name has not been released, cooperated with investigators during an interview later in the day. He has been sent home and investigators are still reviewing the contents of the Internet and telephone correspondence.

“There have been no arrests and nothing so far indicates there will be,” Brady said.

Plenkovich, who was born in Croatia, was visiting her father in Missoula, and plans to move here next summer.

The girl’s father called police on Wednesday after dropping her off at the Missoula Public Library to do homework. According to witnesses, Plenkovich left with the 38-year-old man less than an hour after arriving.

Brady said nothing so far indicates she was forced into leaving with the man, who has a minor criminal record in Missoula but no history of sexual offenses.
