Kazakhstan interested in purchasing oil, gas facilities in Croatia

05.07.2007, 17.13

ASTANA, July 5 (Itar-Tass) - Kazakhstan is interested in purchasing oil and gas facilities in Croatia, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev told a news conference on Thursday after talks with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic who arrived in Astana on a working visit on Wednesday.

Nazarbayev noted that he "expressed a request at the talks that the Croatian side should help (Eds: Kazakh investors) in privatising oil refineries and purchasing stocks of the gas and oil pipeline system". He stated that "Kazakhstan possesses large deposits of oil and gas and is interested in diversifying oil and gas pipelines in order to come to international markets".

He meant participation of the Kazakh side in the project of integrating the Druzhba and Adria oil pipelines with an exit to the Croatian port of Omisal.

According to Nazarbayev, "Croatia displays great interest in developing business cooperation with Kazakhstan, but for this purpose, it is necessary to expand the legal framework, without which cooperation cannot be boosted".

The Kazakh president stated that the two sides gave an instruction to appropriate bodies of the two countries to draft in the near future a package of bilateral agreements on mutual protection of investments, on precluding double taxation as well as on the development of tourism and sport.

In turn, Mesic stressed that "relations between the two countries have not reached a level which can be regarded as satisfactory". "We can and must achieve more, which will be good both for Croatia and Kazakhstan," he added.

According to the Kazakh Statistics Agency, trade between the two countries totalled 7.4 million US dollars in 2006, while in January-March of the current year it hit 27.8 million dollars.
