Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec, seen here in May 2005, said officials from Croatia and China held talks on boosting economic ties between the two countries and signed a deal on agricultural cooperation.

Officials from Croatia and China held talks on boosting economic ties between the two countries and signed a deal on agricultural cooperation.

"We have discussed the level of commercial exchanges and concluded that we have to intensify our economic cooperation," Croatia's Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec told journalists after meeting visiting Chinese State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan.

The Croatian side proposed that its companies take part in infrastructure projects in China, such as road building, he said.

The possibility of making better use of the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka port was also discussed.

The two sides signed the agreement on boosting cooperation in agricultural science and technology.

Tang, who also met President Stipe Mesic and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, echoed Polancec's words stressing that Croatia was China's main commercial partner in the region.

During the first seven months of this year Croatian exports to China totaled 3.7 million euros (4.7 million dollars) while imports amounted to 473 million euros.

In November, Polancec is to head a delegation of some 30 businessmen from leading Croatian companies on a visit to China. AFP
