The Ashiya International Haiku Festa winners included Darko Plazanin fromCroatia, to whom the Japanese Minister of Education, Science and Culture gavean Inspirational Award for his English haiku with a 3-syllable first line,intriguing contrasts and similarities:
each snowflake
flies in its own way into
the same whiteness
Also from Croatia, Stefanija Bezjak won the Haiku Grand Prize in honor ofhaiku mentor Kyoshi Takahama (1874-1959) for a similarly pithy starting line:
spring morning
mountain pastures reach
up to the skies
