First academic conference to study the works of Ivo Brešan

Letter of Invitation

The First May of Brešan
An International Scientific Conference Dedicated to the Work of Ivo Brešan:

Text and Context:
Zadar, May 18 - May 20, 2018

Dear colleagues!

Although the title of Ivo Brešan's last book, The Dead Need Nothing (Mrtvima ništa ne treba), has a certain finality to it, we cannot accept the departure of this great artist as the end of the potential of his creative opus.

Ivo Brešan has mostly been perceived by the general public as a dramatist, although he contributed significant work for film and television (in collaboration with Krsto Papić, Veljko Bulajić, Danijel Marušić and Vinko Brešan), and from the mid-nineties directed most of his efforts to the writing of prose. Recent criticism (theatre, film and literary) has long noted Brešan'€™s continuing interest in the political, ideological and personal problems involved in what it means to be human. Scholars such as Marijan Bobinac, Lada Čale Feldman, Dalibor Foretić, Darko Gašparović, Branko Hećimović, Zvonimir Mrkonjić, Boris Senker, and also Velimir Visković, who have written on Brešan, agree that the sense of the grotesque that this author used in order to dissect dogmatic, bureaucratic, careerist and collective manifestations of the spiritual malaise of society, as well as party and clerical ideologies and mythologies, possesses recognizable element of caricature in both his theatrical and prose texts. The creation of a symbolic language, as well as specific idiolects, opens a path for research in the (de)construction of a linguistic stereotype.

The conflict between barbarism and culture, often presented in a dystopian fashion, which does not avoid either "Arcadian" micro collectives or highly hierarchical ones, is constructed with a provocative use of genre and with postmodern approaches and procedures.

The primary aim of this conference is to explore the various dimensions of Brešan'€™s literary and artistic work from a variety of perspectives (theatre and drama studies, literary theory, history, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, culture studies et al.), which will contribute to a greater understanding of this unique and valuable opus. All topics are welcomed, whether individually or co-authored, which examine the different aspects of Brešan's work. This includes the reception of his work, in Croatia and abroad, in the Academy and in (higher) education, as well as in various types of artistic and cultural media.

We invite you to participate in a scientific conference which will take place at the University of Zadar from May18 - 20, 2018.

Pozivno pismo

Prvi Brešanov svibanj
Međunarodni znanstveni skup o djelu Ive Brešana:

tekst i kontekst
Zadar, 18. svibnja -€“ 20. svibnja 2018.

Plenarna izlaganja održat će: akademik Boris Senker, akademik Krešimir Nemec i izv. prof. dr. sc.

Obavijest o prihvaćanju teme izlaganja sudionici će dobiti najkasnije do 20. prosinca 2017.

Predviđeno trajanje izlaganja sudionika skupa je 15 minuta.

Jezici skupa su hrvatski i engleski.
