“Incorporating the Diaspora in Contemporary Croatian Studies” Participants: H.E. Marijan Gubic, Consul-General of the Republic of Croatia, NYC Dr. Predrag Sustar, University of Rijeka Dr. Silvana Vranic, University of Rijeka Dr. Sanja Zubcic, University of Rijeka Dr. Vjeran Pavlakovic, University of Rijeka This series of short presentations will introduce the exciting and dynamic developments at the University of Rijeka’s new campus, as well as outline the university’s goals for expanding international cooperation, exchange, and Croatian language education. The delegation from the University of Rijeka will present both the successes of educational reform and the current challenges present in Croatian higher education, along with the strategies of the university to excel in research and provide its graduates the skills they need as Croatia prepares to enter the European Union. There will also be a focus on how to strengthen cooperation and exchange between the University of Rijeka and Croatian émigré communities in the United States, including knowledge transfer, student exchanges, contributions of returning scholars, and development opportunities. The representatives from the Croatian Studies Department at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will familiarize the participants about the programs and prospects for studying the Croatian language in Rijeka, as well as the activities and research conducted by the department. There will also be a presentation about current international research projects and partnerships at the university, students’ perspectives on studying at the University of Rijeka, and future goals for developing a vibrant campus community.
